I'm sure more details will become available soon. It is noteworthy that "a link between Al Qaeda and the Henry Okah's flank of MEND is currently giving investigators and prosecutors in South Africa a serious concern as to the strength, dynamics and connection of the Nigerian militant group. Okah is said to have arms deal with Al Qaeda network."  http://www.pointblanknews.com/News/os4086.html

There is no doubt that Al Quaeda will use religious extremists, MEND, or any other group to achieve their goals. Let's pray that this story is not true.
Err, this is starting to sound more and more bizarre. When has Al Queda ever used secular freedom fighter types before to accomplish its goals? That doesn't sound like how they operate.

I could see a connection between AlQ and Boko Haram, or some other sort of northern fundamentalist group. But Christian Ijaw oil militants? Not saying it is impossible, but hard for me to believe w/o some sort of evidence.

I understand why they do it though.

You'd think this would get coverage in the US media or something, if true. Not saying I don't believe, but just seems a bit odd. . .

Eh, he was the ambassador. If he doesn't know Nigeria more than your average Nigerian, then he didn't do his job.

Anyway, it is quite interesting. Hopefully this CPC/ACN alliance comes through.

PoliticsRe: Why Does Nigeria Lack Creative Entrepreneurs by ekubear1: 5:12pm On Jan 06, 2011
If your grandpa lives in the bush somewhere and you are the first person in your family to go to an elite college in the US, then obviously you'll have a different risk tolerance than someone who's grandpa went to Harvard Law, father runs a hedge fund.

If the latter guy wastes age 21-28 on high-risk, high-reward ventures that have a 5% chance of exceeding the earnings he'd get if worked a 9-5. . . well, not so big a deal.

But for the former guy, the penalties for failure are quite a bit larger.
PoliticsRe: Why Does Nigeria Lack Creative Entrepreneurs by ekubear1: 4:38pm On Jan 06, 2011
I guess another thing to keep in mind is that while entrepreneurship is certainly one path towards wealth, the "variance" is quite high; most entrepreneurs and their businesses fail (even in the West, a more conducive environment.) Facebook is fine to mention, but you must also discuss Friendster, Orkut, and countless other attempts which were not as successful.

If we average out over successes and failures in entrepreneurship, it certainly seems reasonable to guess that the average earnings after including the failures is higher than your typical white-collar job.

But just because your average entrepreneur's salary is higher than a 9-5 doesn't mean that you should abandon the 9-5. What is relevant is instead the probability of increasing your earnings above that of your current one.

So if you have a phenomenal white collar job, there is less incentive to move to entrepreneurship.

Anyway, long story short, entrepreneurship is only a means to an end.
PoliticsRe: Why Does Nigeria Lack Creative Entrepreneurs by ekubear1: 7:00am On Jan 06, 2011
Hrm, not sure that the gen #s are too far off.

Let's work out gasoline electricity generation. 1 liter of gasoline, 32 MJ of energy. 1 kWh = 3.6 MJ.

So roughly 8.89 kWh per liter. Efficiency of a an internal combustion engine is 20%ish. Generator efficiency, 80-90%ish? So roughly 16%-18% overall efficiency. End result is 1.42-1.6 kWh per liter.

Liter of gasoline in Nigeria is N65, so $0.433 per liter. So $0.27 - $0.31 per kWh (and for comparison's sake, quite a bit more than the prices one pays for electricity in the US: http://www.eia.doe.gov/electricity/epm/table5_6_a.html).

My calc for solar might be off though, I'll check again some other time.
PoliticsRe: Why Does Nigeria Lack Creative Entrepreneurs by ekubear1: 4:31am On Jan 06, 2011
By "guess", I mean that I did some rough investigations/hand calculations some time back. Those were the estimates I came up with. So I should say "estimate"/"educated guess" rather than just "guess."
PoliticsRe: Why Does Nigeria Lack Creative Entrepreneurs by ekubear1: 4:21am On Jan 06, 2011
Kobojunkie:
You cannot compare the economics of solar out in the west to the same in Nigeria. Nigeria does not already have steady cheap supply of energy. Solar and Wind electricity make very good sense for Africa considering the higher year round insolation when compared to much of the west, and the very low maintenance necessary.
I'm saying that my guess is that $ per kWh for solar > $ per kWh even for gen (at least at the subsidized prices fuel for gen costs in Nigeria.)

I could easily be wrong, but this is my guess. Solar is like $0.40 per kWh or so, gen in Nigeria is like $0.25 or so. Numbers might be off, but you get the idea.

Dis Guy:
Install Solar panels/Wind turbines from the beginning and recycle rainwater for the toilets
The economics of solar electricity are pretty terrible, iirc, even in the West where there are various subsidies. I'd be surprised if beats out running a gen (though I've not looked at the issue very closely.)
PoliticsRe: Why Does Nigeria Lack Creative Entrepreneurs by ekubear1: 2:30am On Jan 06, 2011
^-- How does this save in power costs?

I guess you save a bit in transportation costs, since it is only 4 trips to school in the week rather than 5. But I don't see how spending 10 hours @ school, 4 days a week is cheaper than 8 hrs, 5 days.

If 70% of the time the students are at school power goes out, you are still running the gen for the same 0.7*40 hours.

So I don't see the gain.

Or are you just saying drop the 5th day entirely, and the 8 hours of lecture given? You could do that, but it decreases the value of your product too (substantially, in my opinion.)
