Carolyn B. Maloney, a New York lawmaker has introduced a bill to forgive student loan debt for health care workers treating patients on the coronavirus front line, many of whom still owe hundreds of thousands of dollars from medical school.

The legislation comes in response to doctors and nurses speaking out against hazard pay, a 50% bonus Gov. Andrew Cuomo proposed the federal government give front-line workers for risking their lives during the pandemic.

“Essential public workers are the ones on the front lines every day carrying us through this crisis,” Cuomo said in April. “We must ensure their efforts and sacrifice are appropriately recognized.”

But a 50% bonus won’t go far for many young doctors, who on average leave medical school with $200,000 in debt, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges.

“I’m looking at a student loan debt of $318,000,” Dr. Manuel Penton III, age 32, previously told ABC News. “That few extra thousand dollars, while it may make a big difference to some people, for me, most of that money is going to go back into paying off my student loan debt.”

The idea is catching on. Last month, more than 500,000 people signed a MoveOn petition asking Congress to include student loan debt forgiveness for doctors in the next stimulus bill.

At the same time, dozens of health care organizations, including the American Medical Association, the country’s largest association of physicians, wrote a letter to Congress last month asking for student loan forgiveness of at least $20,000 for residents and early graduated medical students whose debt averages over $200,000.

The AMA has also endorsed The Student Loan Forgiveness for Frontline Health Workers Act.

The Student Loan Forgiveness for Frontline Health Workers Act, which Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., introduced Tuesday, goes even further.

If passed, the bill would forgive all federal and private student loans for medial professionals who are directly interacting with COVID-19 patients, including front-line doctors, nurses, aids, medical residents, interns and technicians. It would also apply to researchers working on COVID-19 treatments and cures.

“We own more than thanks and cheers at 7 p.m.,” Maloney said during a Tuesday press briefing. “We have an obligation to ensure men and women are relieved of the debt they incurred to train for this critical work.”

A House bill proposed in March included more widespread student loan forgiveness, but capped it at $30,000 and was applied only to public loans. A targeted approach aimed at doctors and nurses would be more likely to pass, Maloney said.

The new bill would have no cap on debt relief granted, and any final determinations on individuals’ eligibility would be determined by a commission.

In addition to supporting front-line doctors and nurses, Maloney said that offering loan forgiveness could help address medical worker shortages in hard-hit COVID-19 hotspots like New York City. Debt forgiveness would also alleviate the fear doctors and nurses have about dying from COVID-19 and leaving their families to pay off six-figure debts.

A number of Penton’s colleagues in Brooklyn have been infected with COVID-19. Two have died.

“There are so many emotions that go along with that,” Penton said. “We can’t go to the funerals. I can’t even find where the gravesite is. There is no sense of closure.”

Maloney also spoke about the tragic deaths of an emergency room doctor and an EMT, both of whom died by suicide last month after treating an overwhelming number of COVID-19 patients.

“We need to do more to support them,” she said.

Debt forgiveness, Penton said, was a tangible way to help.

“Finally, people are coming together and cheering for us and care about the position we’re being put in,” he said.

“There’s no argument about what would support us the most.”

Mr. Celestine Umeh, a Chief Superintendent of Police in Akwa Ibom State, has allegedly arrested, detained and framed-up a businessman, Clement Asuquo Etim, who caught him in bed with his wife.

According to Sahara Reporters, CSP Umeh had been having an amorous affair with Mrs Lawrentia Asuquo, for a long time before he was caught red handed in Etim’s matrimonial bed at about 7:00pm on April 27, 2020, at Aba Ukpo Estate, Uyo.

Etim said he was provoked on seeing CSP Umeh in bed with his wife and decided to confront him along with his cousin that came with him to Calabar as a witness.

Following the confrontation, the policeman ran out with the wife and abandoned his SUV.

About two hours later, heavily armed officers from the Special Anti-Robbery Squad stormed the house and arrested Mr. Etim, his cousin, Mr Patrick Okon Edet, and his home help, Christopher Bassey.

On getting to the police command, Etim said that the police tortured them and falsely accused them of “assaulting” CSP Umeh and “stealing his mobile phones".

Etim was detained illegally from April 27 to 30th when he was temporarily released to go and search for the keys of the SUV belonging to CSP Umeh which was abandoned at his house.

However, the cousin and home help were detained in police custody from April 27 April to May 4 when they were arraigned before a Chief Magistrate Court in Uyo on trumped-up charges of assault and stealing.

Etim said that when he was released, he decided to go to the hospital for medical checks as blood kept coming out from one side of his ear as a result of torture by the Officer-in-Charge of General Investigation, Ekene Nwosu, who used a plank to hit his ear.

The Senate has said that it will investigate the status of the 5G Communication network in Nigeria and how the technological impact will affect Nigerians.

Senator Uche Ekwunife sponsored the motion during plenary on Tuesday.

She raised concerns about the uncertainty of whether or not 5G has been launched in Nigeria.

She further raised concerns by some scientists and medical experts that the emissions from the 5G towers could adversely affect the health of citizens by causing symptoms like damage to eyes, antibiotics resistance, and other physiological effects on the nervous and immune system.

“Mindful of the recurrent health hazards which are usually associated with technological advancements such as the 5G network and the need to conduct a thorough test prior to the deployment of new technology”.

The announcement of lockdown procedures by the Federal Government on April 27, in a bid to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus led to a lot of unrest, increase in poverty rate and invariably, heightened increase in crime rates in the nation and especially in highly populated areas such as Lagos.

Residents in one of the most glamorous estates in Lagos state; Lekki also bore the consequences of the unrest in the state as their estates were invaded by miscreants, armed robbers, okada riders, squatters, hoodlums etc.

The stakeholders of the Lekki Residents Association (LERA), Chief Wole Akala, Mr. Paul Kogolo, and Mr. Kanny Awe reported that the invasion was as a result of the non-challant attitude of the Chairman of LERA, Mr. Kayode Otitoju, under whose leadership ,the estate security apparatus was disbanded and LERA office at the pavilion was closed which led to an influx of miscreants into the estate.

According to Accendolaw, the stakeholders' solicitors, the stakeholders who could not fold their arms and watch their lives endangered, quickly formed a group to tackle the security situation, eradicate okada riders who posed security threats in the estate.

Accendolaw further mentioned that the timely intervention of the stakeholders in collaboration with the police in Maroko division, Lekki Phase 1, led to proper monitoring and ultimately resisting the miscreants within the estate.
