BusinessNigerian Banks To Minimize Debit Card Spending Abroad As FX Crisis Intensifies by ElectroLyte(op): 10:50am On Jul 20, 2020
Due to the ongoing foreign exchange crisis in the country, Nigerian Banks are set to limit debit card spending abroad.
From this morning, Nigerian banks will suspend or reduce the amount their customers can spend abroad using debit cards, two of the banks have said, as the lenders try to limit foreign currency settlement risk.

It is yet another worrying sign of the country’s worsening dollar shortages made more severe by the sharp fall in the price of oil, Nigeria’s main export.

Simply put, Nigerian banks are trying to avoid transactions with hard currency reports Reuters.

Stanbic IBTC Bank, the local unit of South Africa’s Standard Bank, said it will halve the spending limit for offshore card transactions to $500 per month from Monday and will limit cash withdrawals to $100.

Another top tier lender Zenith Bank said it will temporarily suspend the use of debit cards abroad for cash withdrawals and cut the monthly spending limit abroad by more than half to $200.

CrimeN34bn Fraud: Court Dismisses Suit Filed By FG Against Tompolo by ElectroLyte(op): 10:59am On Jul 16, 2020
A suit filed by the Federal Government against Global West Vessel Specialist Limited, a company linked to a former Niger Delta militant leader, Government Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo has been dismissed by the Federal High Court in Lagos.

The entire 40 counts charge bordering on alleged N34bn fraud filed by the Federal Government was dismissed on Wednesday, June 15.

The other defendants in the case were a former Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, Patrick Akpolokemi, Kime Engozu, Rex Elem, Gregory Mbonu and Warredi Enisuoh.

Three other firms – Odimiri Electrical Limited; Boloboere Property and Estate Limited; and Destre Consult Limited – were also defendants in the criminal case filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in 2015.

Tompolo was initially joined as the first defendant in the case, but following his refusal to answer repeated court summonses, Mr Festus Keyamo (SAN), who handled the case for the EFCC, had to apply to the court that Tompolo’s name be removed from the charge sheet.

In a ruling on Wednesday on the defendants’ no-case submission, Justice Ibrahim Buba pronounced that the prosecution “failed to establish a prima facie case” against the defendants.

He, therefore, dismissed the entire 40 counts filed against the defendants by the EFCC, through Keyamo, and set them free.

In the charges, the EFCC had accused the defendants of conspiring among themselves to divert various sums running into over N34bn, belonging to NIMASA to their personal use.

The EFCC said they acted contrary to Section 18 (a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) (Amendment) Act, 2012 and were liable to punishment under Section 15 (3) of the same Act.

SportsShock! As Southampton Stuns Manchester United In A 2:2 Draw by ElectroLyte(op): 11:15am On Jul 14, 2020
Shock as Southampton stuns Manchester united in a 2:2 draw. Manchester United missed the chance to go third in the Premier League table as Southampton secured a late 2-2 draw at Old Trafford.

With his side on a 17-match unbeaten run, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer saw no reason to switch things around by naming an unchanged XI for the five consecutive matches – the first time this has happened in 27 years at Manchester United.

Ralph Hasenhuttl also decided against rotating his side, having seen his side pick up four points against Man City and Newcastle. And for good reason too. The Saints were fast out of the blocks, pressing with purpose and trying to unsettle the United backline and looked every bit a side improving with every game.

But the hosts should have taken the lead when Anthony Martial seized upon James Ward-Prowse’s poor touch, only to see his effort blocked by Alex McCarthy.

That miss proved costly just two minutes later when Southampton opened the scoring. Paul Pogba was caught in possession by Danny Ings and Nathan Redmond crossed to Armstrong, who hammered past David De Gea to give the visitors a shock lead.
