Car Talk / Re: Automatic Transmission: Do Their Benefits Outweigh Their Issues? by elektra80: 11:03pm On Nov 05, 2013
Ikenna351:

Is your life so bitter that all you can think whenever you wake up is "Car Talk, Ikenna351 and how to tarnish Ikenna's reputation in Car Talk"?

For months now, all you have been doing in Car Talk is "any post or thread Ikenna351 is mentioned so that you paint him black, discredit him, etc"? Any Thread Ikenna starts, you jump in, look for a fault to discredit or show the world how Ikenna is not what he claims he is. Even topics or posts Ikenna didn't contribute anything, you still point out there negatives about Ikenna. What kind of person are you? Are you really such a bitter person? A man for that matter?

Take a look at most of your recent posts. A day you didn't post negative comments about Ikenna, you will not sleep. I have beginning wonder why would a fellow man be so bitter about another fellow man that he goes around posting negatives or trying to tell the world how wrong his fellow man has been. Are you doing all these to seek some kind of attention from me or Car Talk members? Attention? Have I ever said I find my fellow men attractive here? If not, what's your purpose? Because its becoming disgusting to me, not just shameful, for a fellow man be tailing his fellow man behind. Or you call Car Talk competition, where you have to tarnish my name so that you become popular or what? Am still trying to understand your end game. Because it has been going on for months and it's no longer funny.

A member, gist4real, about an hour ago, posted his opinion on manual vs auto transmission. But you couldn't hold your bitterness if you didn't reply his post without condemning Ikenna first. What does gist4real opinion got to do with Ikenna that you couldn't hold yourself but remember how wrong was? Honestly, you don't need only help, but prayers. Because I wonder what people around you go through, if you can be this bitter about someone online you haven't even met. Honestly, it wont be difficult for you to give me poison if you have the chance. You must be hating yourself that I still breath.

Those who are observant must have known what has been going on. Some, probably are enjoying electra80 negative comments about me. Of course, some may have been waiting for me to react so that I would be attacked of been too harsh, arrogant, name them. This is not the first time. But I will say this, I don't find it funny to be personally attacked for months from an individual. I cant keep ignoring such attack because am a moderator. Yes, I could ignore some slights or insults, but not when an individual has made it a duty for months. So electra80, whatever your mission, with regards to me is, am not interested in my fellow men sexually, am not competing with anyone in case you think you need to bring me down to rise or whatever that have made you so bitter about me. Make no mistake, my patience may run one day if you continue your mission. The day that happens, I will remind you that as a moderator, even if I do not see insults on other members, I see mine each time I log in here. It has gone on for a long time and has become too personal for me to ignore again, even if that what will take me off this section as a moderator and a member.

Ikenna

Abeg make I hear word mr moderator. Can u mention somewhere in my post where I mentioned ur name? Everybody was giving their opinion, am I not entitled to mine? Abeg free me, I'm not interested and I have not broken any rules here. If u have something pinching u then don't bring it to me. Why do u always think I'm referring to u everytime I make a comment here, don't u have better things to do? So whenever there is an issue of automatic vs manual then I should not comment. Or whenever Peugeot is mentioned I should not make my opinion. OMG u make me laugh, seriously u won't stop making me laugh, u are one really funny guy and I see u are easily wound up. Keep it up dude.
Car Talk / Re: Automatic Transmission: Do Their Benefits Outweigh Their Issues? by elektra80: 8:43pm On Nov 05, 2013
gist4real: I am not an auto guru, when people like Siena, Ikenna et al talk about cars, I read and humbly learn and believe me I've learnt a lot from these guys, but when it comes to the "battle" between auto and manual I think I can talk not as a Guru but based on my personal experience. I live lagos and I used to have a business in Benin. For 7years I was driving from lagos to Benin @ least thrice a week in my small nissan sunny 1.6 with a manual gear (lil Sunnie I still miss u) later changed it to a 96 honda accord still manual. Apart from this I used an aunt's Honda Pilot and Crv for a while. When in comes to responsiveness you cant compare a manual transmission with auto. Manual automobiles are responsive. My God they are! They are best for long journeys you are part of the action every second of the journey. They are engaging to drive, they are sweet to drive. The driver is in control. Personally I cant drive a vehicle with auto tyranny longer than 2hrs for fear I'll dose off no matter how modern or luxurious. If I want to ‎be driven, then I'll get a driver. But if I really want to drive, then I'll get a manual.
In terms of maintenance you cant even begin to compare the two I bought my wife a 99 honda accord auto, nice interior, but what I spent on the transmission was enough to buy @ least one other car.

And for those saying it causes leg pain I don't know how because in all my years of driving manual never for once have I had an unusual leg pain.

Manual all the way.

Based on my personal experience.

Talk about responsiveness, well I don't think it'd still the same. Newer automatics are as responsive as their manual counterparts. Some people on this site are very quick to condemn automatic cars and think its dummies that drive automatics just because they drive a manual car from abuja to Enugu. Let's take for an example the movie fast and furious 6, most of he stunts were made by real time drivers and 80% of the cars used in that movie are automatics. Do u also wanna tell me those drivers are dummies or u are better than them? Even sports car makers like Ferrari and Lamborghini are switching from manuals to automatics. Automatic cars are faster these days and response just as well.. As for fuel economy, it has greatly improved.

The only problem I see with automatics is that they are prone to failure than manuals. But then it is the same with newer technology and needs much attention. I mean would anybody choose a Nokia 3310 over an iPhone? A Nokia 3310 can serve u 5 days without u charging it, try that with an iPhone, I doubt an iPhone can last a whole day without charging. But its obvious iPhone is a better phone, but needs more care. Try dropping an iPhone from 10ft , then try dropping a Nokia 3310 from the same height and see which one shatters. Same thing goes with video player. Back in the days we had video players with video cassette. They are so durable, but now we have DVDs and blu ray players. U any treat a DVD the same way u treat a video cassette. U can drop a video cassete, even when some part of the tape gets damaged, u can still cut it off and glue the remaining part and voila, its playing again, u will only lose the part that was cut off. Try that with a DVD. One huge scratch and the whole DVD is rendered useless. But then with DVD and blu rays we have high definition pictures and audios that we can't get from a video cassette.

My point is, with newer technologies come fragility and special care. U cannot treat an automatic the same way u treat a manual, but the usage comes to special preference. For me, I will take the pleasure I derive from automatic over a manual. I will sacrifice the special care and the little mpg I lose over a manual.

Dadaa: Nlanders pls help o

I just got an 02 camry which happened to be my 6th car but 1st Toyota. I drove it for d 1st time and heard lots of noise like bad absorbers noise. On taking it to d mech he checked and said its d linkage both front and rear. He totally yanked of a thin rod stretching from left to right rear wheel wit som moveable joints and told me there was no need to replace it.
He claimed its not my absorbers and its a common camry prob starting from 97 tiny light up and replacing it wud just amt to a waste of money cos in a few mths d noise wud continue.
But in all honestly I drove it and d noise from d rear reduced drastically.
Pls whats d implication of d absense of d rod
Also I may need recommendation of a good toyota mech and a spare part shop for original Toyota parts.

You need to change ur mechanic. The way u described it then its probably the stabilizer bar that was removed, otherwise known as Sway bar. I really don't know why Nigerian mechanics are quick to delete a component from a car (e.g thermostat) as if they know more than the engineers that put it there.

The stabilizer bar is part of the suspension and it helps in keeping the car from rolling in a sharp turn. It gives the car a better balance, so I don't see why the mechanic would have to remove it. He should rather replace the bushings and linkages attached to the stabilizer bar instead of deleting everything.

johnny2013: @ ba-aliyah. I appreciate you alot but does the road noise affect the performance of the car? Also do you have the idea of the cost in Cotonou? The agent am going through said it cost 700k including custom duty but one other person said I need up to 800k. Help pls, thanks

one thing people fail to realize is that a used car has no fixed price. Mr A might buy his own for 700k and mr B might buy his for 900k. It depends on the condition of the car, the mileage, whether its clean title or salvage, trims etc. Difference in price from a base level to the highest trim of the same car can be as high as 300k.
Car Talk / Re: Hondas , Front Wheels That Have Minds Of Their Own And Other Stories by elektra80: 6:46pm On Nov 03, 2013
People over emphasize on this issue. As if other cars front wheels don't come off too. I saw a mercedez Benz c class with the same problem on the highway today. I have been driving my accord for a year plus now and no such issues, very good car. If u are scared ur front wheel is gonna come off, then don't even buy it because u can't enjoy it with that fear in ur mind. If u check ur wheels periodically and use genuine parts, there are lots of fake Honda ball joints out there. OK fine there might be a design flaw but it's not as bad as people make it look if u take care of ur car and use genuine parts

universalbets: Thanks Electra. Scanned the car this evening and have the following new codes after installing my neighbors MAF in mine:

1. P1130

2. P1150

3. P0171

4. P1130

It is still emitting black smoke. Drove around for 5mins and the black smoke did not clear out. So its probably more than the Mass Air Flow or is 5mins test too small to get results?

Thanks for helping!

like i said earlier, if u are getting p1150 then u need to check ur o2 sensor just by the exhaust manifold and that is probably what is causing the system too lean code. Also u need clear the codes when parts are replaced
Car Talk / Re: Black Exhaust Smoke From Toyota Sienna Le 1999 by elektra80: 7:08pm On Nov 02, 2013
p0100 and p0110 have to do with ur maf or air flow meter. Clean or change it. Air fuel circuit sensor malfunction has to do with ur oxygen sensor just by the exhaust manifold. You didn't state the code though, if its p1150 then u probably need to change the o2 sensor and it should take care of p0171. If after changing p0171 doesn't clear then check ur injector nuzzle .
Car Talk / Re: A Diesel Engine 2002 Volkswagen Passat? Is it adivsable to buy? by elektra80: 12:38pm On Nov 02, 2013
lanre_front: Siena, thanks a lot for the info.

I asked a mechanic for my area this morning. This is what he said: I should forget it, that even the Petrol one is problematic, talkless of the diesel.

I said I was also considering a 1998 Volvo v40. He said that one too no be reliable car.

But what I'm looking at really now is the fuel efficiency compared to a Petrol car given the fact that diesel for Naija is N130-N140 while petrol is N70. Also, you can hardly get diesel that has not been mixed with kerosine for over here.

So I wonder is there really an advantage a diesel car has over petrol. I am tempted by the low price of this one (500k). But I also saw a clean petrol 1998 manual transmission Volvo v40. Thinking maybe that one is a better choice than venturing into the unknown; or should I say, an experiment. I'm going to be on the move a lot, within Lagos and out of Lagos with the car. I want a car that will not give me any problem whatsoever: that is, it just starts and drive whenever I turn the key in the ignition. in fact, that is why I'm going for a manual.

Abeg u fit show me where u dey buy petrol for N70. I need am
Car Talk / Re: Auto Golf3 by elektra80: 2:24am On Nov 02, 2013
I am going to be very blunt here, I don't care what anyone says. The manual version of EVERY car will always have less transmission problem than the auto version. Yes, EVERY car. It doesn't matter if its Honda, or Toyota, or VW, or Peugeot, or mercedez Benz, etc. Now since that is a fact, couple it with the fact that most people in Nigeria don't use recommended atf, so if the failure chance of a particular auto tranny is 20%, when the wrong atf is used the failure chance will increase to like 40%.

So I really laugh when I read posts of some guys here saying they are afraid to travel with their car because of fear of auto tranny failure. Cmon, if u can't maintain it, better stick with the manual. At least the manual can take more abuse and its not all that electrical like the auto. U gain more mpg while driving a manual, and some people see it as fun shifting sticks. With auto, u save urself the stress of having to shift or using 2 legs at the expense of reduced mpg.. Oh and higher chance tranny failure. U can't eat ur cake and still have it.

Same happens to me, you're not alone, when i ask someone about pharoahe or krs people would give a stare like i just asked them a mathematical equation to launch a rockett to space. Wonderful addition, Nas and Methodman are great, a few people appreciate these rappers as talented as they are (criminally neglected) though, they rather listen to a song with a title like 'h.oes in the club' and they will regard it as gangsta. It's a shame lyrics don't play a significant role this days in rap with beats being the primary focus and they want to call that rap. Why do they call it rap when they don't rap to begin with? They can do their ''h.oes in the club'' party-like, candy-shop beats but atleast they shouldn't call it rap.

true things bro. People are quick to mention 2pac whenever they mention rap, as if 2pac is the creator of rap. Yes 2pac was good, but he became famous after he died, and the controversies surrounding his death is one of the things that really made him famous, not really his music. If we are talking modern rappers, i will still pick Kendrick Lamar and big Sean ahead of lil Wayne, drake, 50 cent etc. And why the hell is nobody mentioning rick ross?

What a load of boll@cks. Abeg gerrout. Is fuel in the combustion chamber counted by drops? Why would you support the road side mechanic idea of removing 4 of the 8 plugs that the car is supposed to be running on and drive the car for a while like that? And the logic that the car has too many plugs. This is an intellectual forum for petrol heads and car enthusiasts not a roadside mechanic under the tree argument corner.

If u were patient enough to read u should have seen I posted earlier that OP should never remove any of the plugs.

The 'D' light blinks, I am suspecting an error in the gearbox as the culprit. Sir, did you at any time in the past work on your gearbox or even changed the Automatic Transmission Fluid?

As for the '8 Plugs' I'm not sure Honda city have 8 plugs, I think the recommended numbers of spark plugs used in Honda City is 4 spark plugs.

@lomomike
some Honda city have Intelligence-dual and sequential Ignition (I-DSI).Which means 2 spark plugs are employed in each cylinder making a total of 8 spark plugs instead of 4. This ensures utilizing every drop of fuel thrown into the cylinders leading to better mpg. So op, check the plugs again, make sure they are OEM recommended and don't remove any of the plugs like someone suggested. Also for the D light flashing, scan the car and post the codes. Might be a solenoid on the gearbox or probably u need to change the ATF.

as for the jerking, a lot of things can cause this, not just plugs. Might be fuel pump, maf sensor, rocker arm actuator, etc. So u need to scan ur car.

What a load of boll@cks. Abeg gerrout. Is fuel in the combustion chamber counted by drops?

Mr Car doctor or should I say quack doctor, I have always respected u on this forum but u just fall my hand. SO which one is a load of boll@cks? That a honda city cannot have 8 plugs or that the 8 plugs don't help improve the mpg. You are the one asking someone if he learnt mechanic under a tree, I think u must have learnt urs under a bridge.

Honda have different engine types, the V-TEC, I-DSI, etc. V-TEC is very common because its found in accords and civics. I-DSI is found in some Honda city, Honda Jazz, etc. It uses 2 spark plugs that are opposite diagonally at the top of each cylinder, that makes it total of 8 spark plugs. The first spark ignites the air and fuel mixture, the same way as with a conventional ignition, while the second spark fires slightly later and ignites any excess fuel in the cylinder. So if I say its utilizing every drop of fuel does that mean I am actually measuring in drops? I made my point that it maximizes fuel economy and achieve complete combustion and achieve a lower level of exhaust emission.

Now what the heck are u talking about bullock, abi because u dey call urself car (quack) doctor that makes u know everything? Anbef waka pass.

will really like to know where you got your mechanic experience from. Under a tree I suppose. Please stop giving advices that could lead to more problems to members on this forum.

I can't get your logic that the car engine has too many plugs. That's how the engine was designed and built and I believe that the car has always ran on 8 plugs prior to the op having the issues presented.

Your advice to the op to remove 4 of the 8 plugs and drive the car around for a while could lead to other issues coming up. Where would the sparks meant for the removed plugs go? How do you disable the ignition circuit for the removed plugs? You could end up frying up the ecu in the process.

@op. Please ignore this guys advice.

Car-Doctor.

If u don't know about something, its better not to say anything than make a false statement. Well i will categorically tell u that some Honda city have 8 plugs, and no they are not v8 but i4 . Ever heard of Intelligence-dual and sequential Ignition (I-DSI).Which means 2 spark plugs are employed in each cylinder making a total of 8 spark plugs instead of 4. I do not need any forgiveness for stating my choice, must u force me to like a particular car? 301 vs yaris i will still pick the yaris. 408 vs corolla or civic i will pick civic without blinking. And that 508 is no match for an accord of the same year so yes i will choose the accord. The 508 is a large family car and it doesn't even have a v6 option. Even the 407 that it replaced had a v6 option. Don't even tell me about the peugeot 508 GT because i already know about it. 2.2L diesel engine with only automatic, no manual option. The 508 GT is a great car, but the pricing brings it down for me. Starting at $55,000 and with no navigation? I thought navigation are becoming standard in newer cars. With navigation and other options u are looking at about $60,000 . That is enough money to get u a new mercedez benz e350 or a bmw 528i
