Immune#1:The issue of road signs is what this government have been overlooking. This is a very important thing they should tackle, rather they are writing Toyota claiming their buses are involved in most accident. Lets say for example someone is driving from Benin to Lagos for the first time. When he gets to sagamu interchange, there is no sign indicating the exit to Lagos, or the exit to Ibadan. Also if manage to get ur way to Lagos Ibadan expressway and u are going into Berger, there's no sign. You will just be driving like a headless chicken not knowing where u are going unless u ask people. Is it not enough that our roads are bad, no street lights on the highways and yet big trucks plying in the night are allowed to have 20 halogen headlights on their trucks. Yes 20.. i counted it. I was was driving along Lokoja expressway around 10pm and I came face to face with this long truck and it had 20 halogen headlamps. about 8 at the top, another 8 at the front grille and 4 below. I almost swerved into the bush because i couldn't see anything. Yet members of the FRSC see these trucks and they can't do anything about it. |
A lot of things can cause this. You need to take ur car to a good A/C technician to look at it. if u live in mainland Lagos I can recommend u to my a/c mechanic. When was the last time u serviced the a/c? like have u ever changed the dryer and check the compressor oil? The following can be the cause of ur problem Low freeon clogged/blocked condenser faulty compressor faulty thermostat etc |
KA24DETT: You are right . The German guys build amazing sedans but the reliability is horrible .Some will say luxury things lose their values faster.. I agree to some extent. But what would u say about a 2004 Mercedez benz ML350 bought brand new for $38,000 and now worth just $9,000. A Toyota Highlander Limited bought same year for $31,000 is still worth $12,500. |
JaaizTech: If your Transmission fluid was already Black or dark brown before changing to the conoil ATF, you may need to get a good mechanic to flush the transmission before replacing it with another ATF. But if it wasn't very dark in color, it may be safe to assume that your transmission doesn't have a lot of sludge in it, so go ahead and replace it with OANDO DEXTRON III, but remember just as a temporary replacement. (This is what Honda suggests; it is inside the manual).Honda stopped making ATF Z-1 and replaced it with ATF DW-1. The poster might find it difficult to get Z-1 but DW-1 is available in Nigeria and it works well for 2005 Honda accord. |
KA24DETT: Bro, I said Hyundai Sonata and Mercedez S class. I brought it in as a comparism for how R"N"Someone finally acknowledge what I posted here https://www.nairaland.com/1437097/why-german-american-cars-low. KA24DETT did not compare Hyundai with Mercedez, he only compared a Hyundai Sonata with Mercedez Benz S class. Most of these German cars become unreliable after a couple of years and mileage and lose their values. |
fili24: Check Mobile.de if you're in doubtI don't need to go to a German site to compare prices, afterall I did my research based on the American market which is neither Japan or Germany. But just to prove u wrong.. in the Uk, a 10 year old Lexus RX300 still has a better value for money than a 10 year old Mercedez Benz ML350 with 150k plus mileage. Go to autotrader.co.uk and confirm for urself. At brand new the Benz is more expensive but after 10 years the Lexus becomes more value for money. |
Ikenna351: Can you please show us the proof where Peugeot stated that the ES9J4S, V6 engine in 406 V6 D9, gives 29 mpg on highway ? Because am staring at my owners manual that came with the car right now.Mr Ikenna.. I don't know ur car more than u do, so apologies if I was wrong. Its just unbelievable for a v6 petrol car to give 40mpg especially in Nigeria that we use adulterated fuels. You might be right though.. but my point is don't always believe the reading on the computer as its always off the real mpg. What do u say about my friend's benz that displays 81mpg while u are driving on the highway. I got my facts from http://www.autoevolution.com/engine/peugeot-406-coupe-1997-30-v6-24v.html Now what I do not know is if its the same engine type as urs , but its the same model 406 with v6 engine. |
Ikenna351: Hmm!
|
fili24: The poster is really confused, those camry you listed are American specs, meaning they were produced either in USA or Canada. You are on point. Toyota and Honda are not in the same league with Benz and BMW. You said for urself that a used Mercedez Benz or BMW with low mileage will buy 2 camrys with low mileage.. ACCEPTED. But what happens to those German cars at high mileage? Their values drop at a faster rate at high mileage than their Japanese counterparts. That is my point. You will get a better resale value from a 10 year old Lexus RX330 with 150k plus mileage than u would from a 10 year old BMW x5 with same mileage (And don't tell me they are not in the same class). Likewise u will get a better resale value from a 10 year old Toyota Highlander Limited with 150k plus than u would from a Mercedez Benz ML350 with similar mileage. |
ihimami: I have looked at used car prices online and there is no way a 2003 Toyota Camry prices can be compared with 2003 E class or C class Mercedes. It is still cheaper to buy used 2003 Toyota Camry than to buy Audi A6 or Mercedes E class of the same year, and don't forget that even in US majority are not of the rich class, so it is expected that those car meant for average citizen such as Toyota and Honda brands will attract more patronage than the luxury brands.Again.. I did not compare a 2003 toyota camry with mercedez benz E class. The benz beats the camry hands down. My point is on resale value. The Benz loses its value by up to 75% vs the camry's 63% over 10 years and 100k plus mileage |
[quote author=elektra80]u made some good points, but then some are off. Its true most Nigerian mechanics find it difficult to fix German sophisticated cars... But what about in the USA? The research was not based in Nigeria but in the USA, and the prices of those cars are in USD. So are u saying those mechanics too don't know what they are doing? I don't argue that jap cars might visit the mechanic more frequently than European cars... But once those European cars start giving problem, u are gonna spend a whole lot to fix just one problem. About the oldest cars u mentioned like Benz 190 etc. Those are the years when japs have not really matured. Japanese cars became popular worldwide in the 90's and have never looked back since then |
ihimami: I could not have put it better, the fact is that most Nigerian mechanics are responsible for the sentiments attached to Japanese cars in Nigeria. This is because of the fact that German technology is way too advance for them to handle, as compare to Japanese cars. Even among the Japanese brands in Nigeria, you will equally noticed that most Nigerians shy away from buying the high end luxury brands such as Acura, Infiniti and Lexus. One is bound to ask those who believe the Japanese cars are more reliable, to take time to observe the oldest cars on our roads, you will be shocked to discovered that they are mostly German cars such as Mercedes 200 flat boot, Golf 1, VW beetle, Audi 80, and 1980 VW Passat which are still being used for commercial taxis. Most of these German cars have put in 30 years plus. In terms of cost of maintenance, the number of times you see a Toyota or Honda owners going to see a mechanics is more frequents than those with German cars except in some rare cases where mechanics may have done a wrong diagnosis on those German cars thereby making the owner to frequents workshops and end up spending so much to fix.u made some good points, but then some are off. Its true most Nigerian mechanics find it difficult to fix German sophisticated cars... But what about in the USA? The research was not based in Nigeria but in the USA, and the prices of those cars are in USD. So are u saying those mechanics too don't know what they are doing? fckyourman: When did Toyota and Honda Become American? My friend park well jor there are Japanese owned companies, simple do a google research. If u read very well then u would have seen there's no place anyone mentioned Toyota and Honda being American cars |
icemann: From my research (My personal opinion shouldn't be taken seriously), Replacement parts for most German cars cos more because they are made in Germany with high labor cost. Second had owners would rather pay less for replacement parts on a 130k mile carGerman cars are ahead in technology, I agree... But for for a 14 year old car? I don't think the issue of being ahead should be considered for a 14 year old car. Lets take a example. A 1999 Toyota Camry xle vs 1999 Mercedes Benz e320. Both are 14 years old and in the same class. The Camry at production is priced at $25,000 while the Benz is priced at $49,000. That is twice the price of the Camry. Now fast forward 14 years and say like 200k mileage. The Camry still sells for approximately $4,500 while the Benz sells for about the same price. Even some 1999 Benz e320 of 200k + miles sell at a cheaper price than the Camry which sells for half the price of the Benz at production. |
lomomike: Sir, I disagree with u on the age related problem associated with Euro and American cars especially German cars. There are many Volkswagen Golf MK1, volkswagen transporters, Volkswagen Passat, ford motors, Mercedes 190 series, Mercedes Benz W123, Mercedes Benz W124, Peugeot J5, Peugeot 404, Peugeot 405, peugeot 505, Volvo 470, Volvo 200, Landrover series, Mercedes Benz Gelandewagen (G Class). ETC which are at least 20 years and some even 30 years and they are still doing very great. While some new models of Japanese cars such as Camrys, Accords, Corollas, Civics etc I've come across are either total failures in some mechanic garages or In some junk yard. I know some other vehicles may not be reliable due to design process or other underlying factors (which also affects JAP mobiles as well as Euro and American car makers) hence necessitating class action law suits and/or recalls or extension of insurance; But to a great extent the issue of longevity of a car lies in the maintenance attitude of the owner/user.I agree with u the longevity of a car depends on the owner. But then when I spend a lot of money to buy say a gold Rolex watch, at least I expect to sell for close to half its original price (or something reasonable ) after 10 years since its top of the line. The case is different with Mercedes and BMW. You buy them at very expensive price when they are new, but after 10 years or after like 150k miles the price becomes on par with Toyotas and hondas of the same class. I made my comparison based on the most common cars... I know some American and Europe cars still have high resale value. For example ford focus is the highest selling car in the world and it holds high resale value. You might want to check this. http://www.cars.com/go/advice/Story.jsp?section=buy&subject=best_resale&story=loResidual |
One word that is above all.. RELIABILITY. |
I did a little research and found out that German and American cars have very low resale values compared to their Japanese counterparts. I don't blame Americans though because Americans can't make a reliable car.. but Germans ![]() Ok first of all.. this is intended for fun only and does not represent exact values, but there just might be some element of truth in it. I know German cars to be 'machines' but I just wonder why they have a very bad resale value, especially when the mileage is above 100k. My research was based on 2004 model of different cars (cars are 9 years old). I compared prices of the cars when new, then prices of used with mileage between 100-130k Note: The prices quoted are just estimates. 2004 toyota camry xle MSRP (Manufacturer's Price) $23,000 I think it would be even more unfair to the Germans if it were to be salvaged. Its funny how these cars lose their value drastically within 9 years. So can someone tell me why those German cars lose their resale value so much , I thought they are supposed to be stronger, more beautiful, handles better and more rugged than the Japs. Also If I compare older cars, say 1996 model, then the German cars would have an even worse resale value. This leaves me with one conclusion.. the older those German cars get, the more problematic they become, hence reason they lose their values drastically. Just my opinion.. other opinions are welcome. |
Corolla or Camry? |
A lot of things can make a car consume more fuel. From wrong tire pressure to bad 02 sensors, MAF, bad or absence of CAT, faulty injectors. etc. If ur check engine light is on then its better u scan the car . Just my opinion. |
Does ur fans come on when u turn on the AC |
icemann: First of all you need to learn and apply the term called humility |
The problem Nigerians have is trying to treat a modern car the same way they treat the older ones. I used a mazda 626 for 3 years without issue, then used a Ford Mondeo 1993 model for 5 years, no issues before giving it to my brother. Used a 2001 Honda accord (babyboy) for 3 years, no issues whatsoever, just normal oil and brakepad change. Tranny and engine are still top notch. I have been using a 2005 Accord for 3 years now and I haven't had any issue with it. It still drives like new. The problem we have is having a bad maintenance culture. I will give u an example. I have a personal scanner I use in scanning my own car myself to pull the codes and tell my mechanic what to fix. I see a lot of cars on our roads with CHECK ENGINE LIGHT and ABS light on.. but because we are ignorant and probably the whack mechanics tell us it doesn't matter, we keep driving. Whenever I have a check engine light on my car I don't take it lightly like most Nigerians do, I make sure I fix the problem and make the light go away, that is the only time I can feel safe driving the car. A 2005 Honda accord was brought to my mechanic shop last week, because the mechanic doesn't have a scanner he called me and I helped him scan the car. Lots of things were wrong with the car, the thermostat has been removed, the fans were connected directly, the TPS (throttle position sensor) is bad and the ECS (Engine coolant sensor) was disconnected. The owner still drives the car like that until it stopped moving and was towed to the workshop. I also noticed the gear has been worked on which the owner confirmed. I then asked him what ATF was used after working on the gear and he said the mechanic that worked on it used ABRO. Imagine Abro ATF on a honda accord 2005 model. Now the car needs a new transmission and lots of sensors to be replaced to get the car running normal. Now ask this owner and he will tell u he will never buy a Honda again, but its his lack of maintenance that cost him the car. The car has been parked there for a week now because no money to fix it. I have seen someone driving a car with flashing D light and he told me nothing is wrong with the car as it is still moving. My point is, there is no perfect car, all car have their problems, but our maintenance culture determines how a car would last. And please nairalanders, don't ignore a check engine light on ur cars, it is there for a reason. If u can't take care of ur cars then its better to be driving a 1990 camry, at least they have less sensors and can be subjected to lots of abuse ![]() |
Wow, clean ride. Wish I have money I won't hesitate to pick her. Happy sales, I'm sure someone will pick her really soon. Also op, ABS is not Automatic brake System, the correct meaning is Anti-lock Braking System. |
KA24DETT: Altima is cheaper, no timing belt to replace. So the maintenance of a car now relies on timing belt or chain? If u don't know something its better not to say anything. The 2005 Honda accord I4 uses timing chain while the V6 uses timing belt. The timing belt is only changed around 100k miles. Timing chains need to be changed too but not at a particular mileage as it lasts longer, it costs a lot more to change than timing chain and u have to change the tensioners too. |
Digriz: frm my own experience,d cost diff might nt be much bt U wl get a more clean car and lots of option to choose frm. From my own experience, the best time u can get a good deal on Cotonou cars is when u are buying older model cars with full options, e.g golf 3, 1997 Honda Accrod (Bulldog), 1995 accord (bullet), Camry Orobo, Nissan Sunny, Almera, Primera (older models) etc. Or when u want to buy trucks like 2000 and below model of Toyota Hilux, buses and vans. These are vehicles that u can't easily get in Nigeria . even if u get them it might not have the options u need, so Cotonou is ur best bet. You can't expect me to want to buy a 2010 toyota Camry and go to Cotonou to look for it when its evrywhere in Nigeria, be it LE or XLE (XLE is what people call full option). Or you expect me to go to Cotonou to buy a 2005 Honda Accord EX when I can get it easily in Nigeria and drive it same day. Why do I have to travel to Cotonou, then waka the whole market, and then start waiting for one week to get my car, sleepless nights. Then fears of something missing from the car, or fear of agent getting me fake papers. At the end of everything the price difference might not even be more than 30-50k from the one bought in Naija. Cotonou dealers have one trick they use, this has happened to me in the past. After u have agreed on the price of a particular car, u followed them to cotonou to see the car, negotiate and agreed on a price, after making payment in cotonou, u come back to Nigeria and wait. The dealers have an habit of milking u, asking u to pay for one thing or the other , they know u have committed urself and u want ur car to arrive fast, so anything they tell u u must agree. In my case the dealer said he needed money to settle customs on the road after I waited 5 days for my car, I had to send it. Then when he finally brought the car after 7 days, the starter was already bad . In total I spent extra 80k on the car before I even got it. So my advice, if u are buying a newer model car, Naija is ur best bet. |
Numero uuuno: ^^^^^^^^^^Yea, but the good thing is this ain't the movies. |
saintjoel: Sir,that's the reason you've to make research before you purchase from Cotonou, you mistake on some issues which are open to both buyer and agent. So give me a very good reason why I have to go to Cotonou to buy a 1999 Camry for 850k when I can get it in Lagos for 900k. At least I get to drive it the same day if I buy in Lagos and I will also have rest of mind. Trust me 50k is not worth the stress of Cotonou. Been there done that. Sometimes u even have to wait for like a week before u get ur car, only to find out some parts are missing, fears of fake custom papers etc. And if u take out transport and hotel (if u wanna stay there to monitor the processing), then u would have exhausted the 50k. For me its waste of time and energy. Unless one is buying a very old car say like 97 models and below, cars u can't easily find in Lagos that is the only time it is advisable to go to Cotonou. |
I wonder why u want to buy a right handed vehicle. 90% if not more of this model are right handed. |
Lord_Reed: The guy no wan speed. Trust me if it were me you for no see my brake light again. No mind all those people claiming to race past cars on the road. Question is are u actually racing with the car or u saw the car cruising and u decided to throttle ur own car to its limits just to overtake. The guy u are over taking might just be cruising and not minding u, and for ur mind u think say ur car run pass him own . mcheewwww |
So what happens if the incompetent mechanic removes the thermostat and installs the double cell radiator, connects the fans directly so that it runs all the time and then car runs cold all the time and the mechanic thinks the car is running normal. My advice, run from the mechanic, don't ever let him remove ur thermostat or change the radiator. Infact don't let him touch the cooling system of ur car. By the way, what is the temperature of ur car like while running, is it overheating? |
yungboss: 200km/h, 1993 bmw 320i 6cyl. Out-ran a 2009 toyota Camry in a race...Were u racing with the driver of the 2009 toyota camry, or u saw him ahead of u and u decided to pedal hard so u can overtake him and then for ur mind u outran him? |
