Nine-month-old Buhari Muhammad, whose genital was cut off by his step-mother, has undergone first corrective surgery at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Bida, Niger. Mrs Mariam Kolo, the Director-General of the state Child Rights Protection Agency, made this known in an interview with newsmen in Minna on Friday. Kolo told journalists that the surgery was part of the series of operations that the boy would undergo. “He was operated upon by four neurologists and he is responding to treatment. “Several other tests will still be conducted to prepare him for the next operation,’’ Kolo said. Newsmen recall that Muhammad’s genital was cut off by his 17-year-old step mother, Bara’atu Muhammad, when he was barely a month old. The incident occurred in Dafe community in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger in June 2016. The step-mother had confessed that she took the action because she was jealous and that she also wanted to get back at the victim’s mother, whom, she claimed was always insulting her. Muhammad was subsequently remanded in Minna prison. The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bala Elkana, told journalists that the suspect was still in Minna Prison, pending the conclusion of investigations. “Under the Police Criminal Law, the suspect is an adult, she is above seven years; therefore, she can be convicted and hanged for the offence,” Elkana said. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/02/buhari-undergoes-penis-surgery/ |

I did not see where the issue of Chibok girls and visit to USA was mentioned in Trump's version. |
American President, Donald Trump, has provided details of his telephone conversation with his Nigerian counterpart, Muhammadu Buhari. Mr. Trump had on Monday spoken to Mr. Buhari , who is vacationing in London. It was the first time both leaders would communicate directly since Mr. Trump assumed office as his country’s 45th president on January 20. After the conversation, the Nigerian presidency immediately released details of the call but the American version of the exchanges was not immediately available on the White House website where readouts of U.S. President’s engagements are usually posted. That fuelled speculations that the conversation did not happen, with some commentators accusing the Nigerian presidency of lying. But responding to PREMIUM TIMES inquiry, the U.S. Department of State has provided details of the discussions between the two leaders. Tiffany Jackson-Zunker, Deputy Director, Africa Regional Media Hub at the State Department, sent this newspaper an email containing a readout of the telephone call. The readout reads, “President, Donald J. Trump spoke this week with President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria to discuss the strong cooperation between the United States and Nigeria, including on shared security, economic, and governance priorities. “President Trump underscored the importance the United States places on its relationship with Nigeria, and he expressed interest in working with President Buhari to expand the strong partnership. “The leaders agreed to continue close coordination and cooperation in the fight against terrorism in Nigeria and worldwide. “President Trump expressed support for the sale of aircraft from the United States to support Nigeria’s fight against Boko Haram. “President Trump thanked President Buhari for the leadership he has exercised in the region and emphasized the importance of a strong, secure, and prosperous Nigeria that continues to lead in the region and in international forums.” Ms. Jackson-Zunker also said a text of the readout had now been posted to the White House website. Femi Adesina, the Special Adviser to President Buhari on Media and Publicity had in a series of tweets on Monday gave the Nigerian version of the discussions by the two leaders. Mr. Adesina said the conversation was cordial and that Mr. Buhari congratulated Mr. Trump on his election as the President of the United States. He said the two leaders discussed ways to improve cooperation in the fight against terrorism through the provision of necessary equipment. Mr. Trump assured the Nigerian leader of U.S. readiness to cut a new deal in helping Nigeria in terms of military weapons to combat terrorism, Mr. Adesina said. He commended Mr. Buhari for the efforts he made in rescuing 24 of the Chibok girls and the strides being taken by the Nigerian Army in combating Boko Haram. Mr. Trump also invited the Nigerian President to Washington at a mutually convenient date, the special adviser said. Mr. Adesina added that, “President Trump encouraged President Buhari to keep up the good work he is doing, and also commended him for the efforts made in rescuing 24 of the Chibok Girls and the strides being taken by the Nigerian military.” http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/223656-i-discussed-president-buhari-donald-trump.html |
I’m aware that some Nigerians still consider Mr. Buhari essential, if not indispensable, to our country’s prospect of rebirth. To these, a suggestion that the man ought to quit office must sound heretical—indeed seem like a prescription with a dollop of ghastly mischief. But such people are grandly deluded. Concrete ideas, not the cult of any particular personality, are best for a polity in need of ethical rejuvenation. And two years of Mr. Buhari’s tenure as president are adequate to demonstrate his paucity of ideas. In place of robust and organic ideas for transforming Nigeria, he has merely offered us the pabulum that his reputation and goodwill are enough. http://saharareporters.com/2017/02/15/humane-proposal-buhari-resign-okey-ndibe |
"You have your right to vote against us (APC) during 2019 election if you want but I remain in the party because we will re-tool this party, we will re-tool this government." "A damage of over 60 years and 16 years of mis-governance by PDP cannot be turned around overnight. Let’s be patient, let’s have the understanding, let’s hang on to hope." ~ ASIWAJU BOLA TINUBU Below is one of the response from Chukwuma Ibiwuru to this post by APC Publicity Secretary, Lagos State, Mr. Joe Igbokwe: In 1999, PDP met nothing except a pariah nation. The Party met monumental corruption including the money that the Abacha family is still returning today. They met an economy without the likes of MTN, Airtel, Glo, Etislat, Dangote Cement, NIPP, Shoprite, privatized NEPA and many more. There were no agencies like ICPC, EFCC, to fight corruption. No regulatory agencies like NERC, NCC, PPPRA etc,. No due process or procurement Act, no UBE Act and many other laws. No Communication satellites, and many other creations of the PDP. An eldorado Nigeria was not handed over to PDP. In fact, there were no card readers to conduct elections until the PDP brought them into our electoral system. Can APC do better? I therefore charge APC to bring up at least a single innovation of this kind to bring about a better Nigeria. |
I extend to President Muhammadu Buhari, my warmest sympathies on his sick bed. It is a measure of the fragility of our democracy that an elected president insists on hiding his frailty from the people who are compelled to pay for his treatment abroad. There is no hiding place in the constitution. Nonetheless, President Buhari is scheduled to return to Nigeria tomorrow. He will be welcomed with at least one Lagos street protest that the police are trying to muzzle. That would be another self-inflicted injury, and I urge Acting President Yemi Osinbajo to tell them to back off and go pursue Lagos’ many criminals. I reiterate that it is a shame and an embarrassment that despite Mr. Buhari’s promises and posturing for many years, he sees no irony in running off to the United Kingdom for his medical needs, leaving behind the nation’s most expensive (and presumably best-equipped) publicly-funded clinic in the presidential palace. This fact underlines a broader reality. Which is that Buhari’s much-heralded leadership has become a farce, and his ability to make a positive impact on Nigeria, a hoax. I was one of those who pushed for his presidency. At one level was the mistaken confidence that his age-old claim to being the man best-prepared to stop Nigeria’s slide into oblivion was true. There was no way to tell for certain he could deliver, but it was a strong and persuasive message: give me control and I will take Nigeria back from her army of leeches, shake them vigorously until there is none left of the blood they sucked. His catchy slogan, just 24 months ago, was: “If we don’t kill corruption, corruption will kill Nigeria.” http://saharareporters.com/2017/02/05/fall-buhari-and-apc-sonala-olumhense |
brainpulse:Somebody did a very tidy analysis and you are here with your gutter rumour induced reply! The question the analyst wanted an answer to is why does recession find Buhari attractive? Why in the history of economic recessions in Nigeria, Buhari is always in power? Inspite of all the mind boggling corruption the previous government have been accused of, none had dragged us into reception. What is Buhari's uncanny attraction to economic negativity? Is he the one destined by the gods to superintend the brake up of this country? |

BENIN—FRESH tension is brewing between the Yoruba and the Benin Traditional Council, as the Esogban of Benin Kingdom, Chief David Edebiri, described as absolute falsehood and provocative, the claim by the Oore of Mobaland, Oba James Adedapo Popoola, that until 1914, Benin Obas were buried in IIe-Ife. He also described as untenable, the claim by Oba Popoola that the Oba of Benin is number four in the cadre of Yoruba kings. The Esogban was reacting to an interview granted by Oba Popoola to a national newspaper (not Vanguard). Speaking to Vanguard in Benin City, Chief Edebiri, who is also the Odionwere of Benin Kingdom, said the position of Oba Popoola was misleading and must not be taken seriously. According to him: “It is absolute falsehood to say that Benin Obas were taken to Ile- Ife for burial. It never happened in our history. The precursor of this present dynasty, Oranmiyan, who came from Ife as requested by the Benin people, went back alive when he felt that he could not cope with the politics of Benin. He went back to Ife. Maybe, he was the one who died there and was buried and they now claim that Benin Obas were buried in Ife. I think that is where the notion came from. The Oba that came after Oraminyan, Eweka I, died and was buried here according to Benin traditional rites, within the palace environment. No Bini man can claim to know where the kings are buried. The two successive obas, the children of Eweka 1, both of them ruled within a space of two years, they died and they were buried here. “So, I pity the Kabiyesi because in the first place, according to him, he is now 17 years on the throne. Maybe, he wants relevance and to be able to do that, he made his wild claims. But what surprises me is, why drag Benin into their problems? If he wanted relevance in his area he should not bring Benin into it. These two Obas in quick succession ruled in Benin and were not taken to Ife. “One can only imagine what it entailed at that time to carry a corpse from Benin to Ife for burial. What was the method of preservation, what was the method of transportation of the remains being carried to Ife and that was done each time an Oba here joined his ancestors? It is not true at all, absolutely untrue. What I want to advise these people is, in the history of a people, you have history and you have fable and you have folklore. It is possible this is one of their fables which has no sanctity of historical facts. “So, to bring what I am saying vividly, the most prominent Benin king that everybody knows about is Ewuare I. I will tell you what the doyen of Benin history, Late Dr Jacob Egharevba, recorded about his death and burial that was in 1440. In the short history of Benin by Dr J.U Egharevba, page 17 says: “Ewuare died after a long reign and was buried at Esi, near Udo” Udo is in Ovia West Local Government Area, “as commanded before his death.” “This was the oba who commanded that if he died because he was sick, they should not bury him in Benin City, they should take him to Esi, his own mother’s village, to bury. Up-till this time, we are talking, the burial place is preserved, and every Oba who wants to ascend the throne in Benin must go there to perform certain ceremonies. The ascension of Oba Ewuare II was not exempted from this. So, that tells you that there is no iota of truth in the issue. It is a mere figment of their imagination. It is not true. Many of the Yoruba kings today are products of the royal family of Benin. Their lines were begun by Benin people from here but we have never said they should bring their corpses to us. “In Benin, it is a taboo to bring the corpse of your son to you. If it is true, as claimed by the Ooni of Ife who is the father of Oranmiyan which we do not dispute, and Oranmiyan did not stay here in Benin till his death, he went back to Ife, why should he wait for his grand children’s corpse to be brought to him each time any of them passesd on here? “There is no sense in it that you just sit down somewhere in Ife waiting for the corpses of your grandchildren to be brought to you. What do you do with it? So you can see that there is no sense in that” he stated. On the claim that the Oba of Benin was the fourth in the cadre of Yoruba kings, Chief Edebiri said: “This is an oba I am hearing of for the first time and I am sure many people who read that story, would have come across that news for the first time. All the cock and bull stories that he told in that interview that he is the announcer of the passage of Ooni of Ife, well that suits him, if his duty is to announce the passage of another king. “He cannot claim to be number four in Yoruba land because that is in direct conflict with what the Alake of Egbaland was saying a few months ago. The political connection we had with them, we successfully severed the connection in 1963 when we had the plebiscite that created Midwest Region. So, we have nothing to do with their classification, they can go on with whatever they think they are. The Oba of Benin cannot be classified with any of them. Maybe it is not generally known that some of the most progressive kingdoms in the Yorubaland have kings who have direct connection with the royal family of Benin. Maybe they do not even know.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/02/no-benin-oba-buried-lle-ife-esogban-benin-edebiri/ |
Members of the Presidential Inaugural Prayer Breakfast Committee, Government Members and Representatives, Ambassadors and Delegates from other nations, ministers and people of God, and to all who will hear these words. We are gathered here in Washington, D.C., on January 20, 2017, on the day of the changing of powers, leader, and governments. And we are gathered here in the name of Him whose kingdom changes not. As we came here to this city four years ago, we come now with one agenda and one purpose, to seek His face and to pray for His will for this government and for this nation. It is fitting that we do so on this day which more than any other day represents the future of our nation. And on the day of the inauguration, we are here to inaugurate the purposes of God. We've come from every part of this land to stand before the Almighty, before whom kings and kingdoms rise and fall, and nation's ascend and descend, Who alone remains the same yesterday, today, and forever. We must pray according to God's will and truth. So this message will not be politically correct, but it will be true. The Message of the Arbella Three Hundred and Eighty Six Seven Ago, the ship called the Arbella journeyed across the Atlantic Ocean to the New World. Aboard that ship was John Winthrop who would pen the founding vision of the civilization that would be called 'America.' If America followed the ways of God, he wrote, then, 'The Lord ... will command a blessing upon us in all our ways ... He shall make us a praise and glory ... For we must consider that we shall be as a city upon a hill.' America was to be as a city on a hill, to which the eyes of all people would look. Winthrop's vision was based on the nation of Israel. In the history of this planet only two civilizations came into existence on the solitary foundation stone of God's calling and purposes. The first was Israel. And the second... was America. The Fall of Ancient Israel Israel was consecrated to the will and purposes of God. But in the midst of its blessings, the nation made a fatal mistake, it turned away from God. The people began removing Him from their lives. They removed Him from their culture, they legislated Him out of their government, they silenced Him from their public squares, they ruled Him out of their kingdom. In His place they brought in foreign gods and idols, gods of sensuality and materialism, and idols of wealth, carnality, and sexual licentiousness. They replaced the standards of righteousness on which the nation was founded for a new morality a new immorality. What they once knew as sin, they now called good, and what they once knew as good, they now called evil, and what they once knew as right, they now called intolerant and dangerous. It was now a civilization inverted, at war against the foundation upon which it had been established, and at war against the God of its foundation. They blasphemed the name of God and descended into the darkest of sins. They now killed their own children on the altars of Baal and Molech. And those who remained true to God, were now vilified, marginalized, mocked, and persecuted. And God called them back, and sent prophets to awaken them. But they hardened their hearts and warred against the prophets. And they stood at the brink of judgment. The Fall of America What about America? Those who came to these shores four centuries ago dedicated the new civilization to God and consecrated it to His will and purposes. America was to be a city on a hill, a holy commonwealth. Its first governments were established in the name of Jesus and for the glory of God. It public school system was founded for the purpose of teaching the Word of God. And as Winthrop had prophesied, God had commanded a blessing. America would become the most blessed, the most powerful, and the most prosperous, nation the world had ever seen, a praise and glory in the earth. But something happened to the city on the hill. As the people of ancient Israel, in the midst of their blessings, committed a fatal error, so too have we. We have turned away from God. We've ruled Him out of our culture, out of our government, out of our lives, and banned Him from our public squares. In His place we have brought in idols of carnality and gain, and gods of materialism and licentiousness. We have replaced the eternal standards of righteousness for a new morality of immorality. The nation that was brought forth to fill the world with the light of God, now fills the earth with pornography. And what we once knew to be sin, we now call good, and what we once knew to be right, we now call intolerant and dangerous. And those who held true to God and His Word, were now marginalized, mocked, and vilified. We have become a civilization inverted, at war against the foundation upon which it had been established, and against the God of its foundation. We have descended to the darkest of sins. Israel killed thousands of its children on the altars of Baal. But we have killed millions. We've offered up our unborn children on the altars of self-obsession. It was here in this city that their murder was legalized forty four years ago. And their blood cries out to Heaven against us. If John Winthrop could now return, he would find his city on the hill darkened and progressing to judgment. For no nation can wage war against the God of its blessings and expect those blessings to remain. The Last Eight Years A nation's apostasy cannot be blamed on any one leader. It is the nation that is ultimately accountable. But an ungodly leader, a Jeroboam or an Ahab, can help turn a nation away from God, and deep and accelerate its departure. And a godly leader, a Hezekiah or a Josiah, can slow a nation's fall, or help lead it back to God. In the past years eight years, America's spiritual fall and moral descent has both deepened and accelerated. The present administration has led this nation to champion the killing of the unborn, and not only within its own borders, but in that of other nations across the world. The present administration has labored to strike down the standards and order ordained by God concerning man and woman and marriage, not only within these borders, but around the world. Under the present administration, relations between the United States and Israel have been brought to their lowest point in the history of the two nations. And the administration's parting gift to the Jewish nation was to abandon it at the United Nations, to allow and even foster a resolution declaring that Israel's ancient holy city Jerusalem, belonged not to Israel, but was, quote, "Palestinian territory." In this way too, the present administration was waging war against the Word of God. From the days of pagan Babylon and Rome, to the Soviet Union and Communist China, governments at war with God have not only persecuted His people, but have used the powers of state to coerce them to desecrate their faith and commit acts against the commands of God. And now in the United States of America, under the present administration, the government has used the powers of state to force believers to commit acts against the commandments of God, to take part in the overturning and destruction of God's sacred order of marriage, to pay for and become accomplices in the murder of the unborn. And for the first time in American history, those who refused to violate the Word of God, faced being put in prison by the state. And of their imprisonment, the present administration issued its blessing. But in a very short time, the present administration will cease to be the present administration. America at the Threshold The stakes of this election could not have been any higher. The Democratic campaign for the presidency was a battle to seal the changes enacted in the past eight years into permanency. At stake was the appointing of the Supreme Court justices who would determine America's future as touching life and death, morality, and religious freedom. For the first time in history, the Democratic platform called for the striking down of the Hyde Amendment, so that all Americans, could now through their taxes, directly fund the murder of unborn children. And for the first time in American history, a major presidential candidate uttered these words: "Deep seated religious beliefs... must be changed..." The war against God had now reached the stage that a mainstream candidate for the presidency could call for the overruling of God's word, and for the eradicating of faith. And why was that faith to be altered? So that abortion could be expanded still further. America stood at the threshold in the face of an election that threatened to establish for ages the edicts of apostasy and the ways godlessness, and an open war against the people and gospel of God. The Surprise And then there was Donald Trump. There had never been a candidate like him. Whatever it was that one was never supposed to do when running for president, he did them all. Poll after poll after poll foretold a sure Democratic victory if not a landslide. The only question was how much of a landslide and how much destruction the Republican Party would incur. The Democrats prepared for victory. The Republicans prepared for defeat. And the media, the pollsters, and the president prepared to be vindicated. But then something happened. And nobody was sure exactly what. The election took a strange turn. And what everyone was sure could never happen... happened. The media was in shock. Democrats were in shock. Obama was in shock. The Republicans were in shock. And it appears that Donald Trump couldn't believe it happened either. But as it was written in ancient times, it is no less true to this day: "As high as the heavens are above the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways. And My thoughts than your thoughts." And as we can bear witness today in the city of Washington, on January 20, 2017 ... "With God, nothing... shall be... impossible." Donald Trump had not lived the life a believer, and there was much concern among God's people. Can God use those who have not known or walked with God to accomplish the purposes of God? Can He choose them and anoint them to lead nations? In Isaiah 45, God speaks to Cyrus, King of Persia: "Thus says the Lord to Cyrus His anointed, whom I have taken by the right hand... to open doors so that gates will not be shut... The Lord God of Israel who calls you by your name for the sake of Jacob My servant, and Israel My chosen one, Though you have not known Me, I have called you by name." The Lord called the prophet Elisha to anoint the warrior Jehu, to be king over Israel. Jehu didn't know God and was a man of fiery passion. But God chose him and used him as a vessel, a vessel to cause the shaking of a nation and the ending of the dynasty of Ahab and Jezebel, and the rule of the priests of Baal, along with their evil. God can and has used such men as His vessels - for the sake of His kingdom and His people. And now we must pray for Donald Trump, that he will fully yield his life to be used as a vessel for the purposes of God. In the days of Israel's apostasy, when the people were warring against His ways, God extended His mercy. He gave the people time to repent. So too, in the days of our apostasy, God is giving us a time to repent. |

Our attention has been drawn to misrepresentations and innuendoes as it concerns the immediate past Governor of Rivers State and current minister of Transportation Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi in the purchase and importation of two helicopters into Nigeria that were supposedly abandoned at the Murtala Mohammed International airport, Lagos. To set the records straight, we wish to state the following facts: 1. Recall that when Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi took over as Governor of Rivers State, criminals masquerading as militants, kidnappers and all other criminal elements were on the prowl in Rivers State. With a strong political will to tackle these menace and make the State a safe place, Amaechi initiated a lot of measures to deal with the menace. Purchasing these helicopters was one of the measures the Amaechi administration took to curb the clandestine and criminal activities in the state. And the decision to go for these helicopters was based on the advice and recommendation of security experts and specialists that were working closely with our Nigerian security agents to rid the state of these criminals- kidnappers, pipeline vandals, vicious political cultists etc. 2. Sequel to the recommendation of security experts, the Rivers State Government bought the two Bell 412 security surveillance helicopters during the administration of Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, in collaboration with the federal government through the office of the National Security Adviser(NSA). The federal government then was very impressed with the Amaechi administration security plan to curb criminality in the State and supported the plan all the way. To show their support, the Federal government through the office of the NSA contributed $15M (Fifteen Million Dollars), about half of the total sum, towards the purchase of the helicopters. Also, the then former President Goodluck Jonathan administration granted waivers to the Rivers State government to purchase and import the helicopters. 3. However, trouble started many months later when the helicopters became ready for the Rivers State Government to take possession of them and use to fight crime and the criminals in the land and creeks of the State. The President Goodluck Jonathan administration frustrated and rebuffed all attempts by Amaechi and the Rivers State government to take possession of the helicopters. Note that the said helicopters were partly funded by the federal government and that would be operated and managed by federal security agencies in collaboration with the Rivers State government. 4. This strange twist was most baffling to the Rivers State government. Many would recall that, Amaechi as Governor of Rivers State at different times cried out, spoke loudly about the refusal of the President Goodluck Jonathan administration to allow the Rivers State government takes possession of the security surveillance helicopters. It was about security, the safety of lives and properties, but the Jonathan administration refused and bluntly blocked the Rivers State government from taking possession of the helicopters. The same helicopters the federal government had months back, partly funded and had granted approvals and waivers for the purchase and importation into the country. 5. It was obvious why the President Goodluck Jonathan administration acted the way it did and Nyesom Wike, the present Governor of Rivers State was an integral part, a major player in the whole conspiracy to block and prevent Rivers State government from taking possession of the helicopters. Then, as a minister in President Jonathan’s cabinet, Wike inundated President Jonathan with lies and fake stories of how then Governor Amaechi wanted to use the helicopters for Presidential campaigns against Jonathan, how Amaechi will use the helicopters to support President Jonathan’s opponents before and during the presidential elections and all sorts of concocted tales that created a false impression that the Amaechi government in Rivers State would use the helicopters against and to fight President Jonathan, and not to secure lives and property. 6. Wike then, was already nursing the ambition to run for the office of Governor of Rivers State, he didn’t care about the security of lives and property, his grand plot was to use the criminals, political cultists and criminal militants to harass, intimidate terrorize, maim and even kill his political opponents and those that refuse to support or vote for him, before and during the elections. Wike knew early that he needed these criminal elements to rig his way to Rivers State government House, so he did everything to ensure that these criminals will always be available for him to use. 7. It is worrisome and indeed pathetic that Governor Nyesom Wike as usual, is again playing politics with the safety and security of Rivers people. The helicopters were procured by the Amaechi administration to curb the wanton menace of criminals in the State(which has since worsened under Wike’s watch), but in his usual habit, Governor Wike has decided to abandon and dump the helicopters, because he does not care about the safety and security of lives and property in the State. Sad, very sad. RT. HON. CHIBUIKE ROTIMI AMAECHI MEDIA |

As it is now, The Gambia is under emergency rule as declared by its president of 22 years, Yahya Jammeh. The emergency rule has become necessary in the estimation of Jammeh, following his decision to challenge the outcome of the country’s December 1, 2016 election in which Adama Barrow was declared winner. The impasse has been largely fuelled by the haste with which the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has not only intervened but also interfered in what should, at this stage, be a purely internal matter of a sovereign nation. Jammeh’s decision to challenge the outcome of the election result is very well within his constitutional rights. By this, the man who is said to have ruled his country with an iron fist, is still within his constitutional rights to test the validity of the election result in the law court. Obviously, it is this right that the ECOWAS nations and indeed a good part of the world has misinterpreted to mean that Jammeh has refused to step down, and this is part of what has heightened the impasse. Just like in Nigeria, the declaration of results by the electoral body does not mark the end of an electoral process in The Gambia. The political actors are still constitutionally permitted to challenge such results in the law court. Such electoral matters can only be said to have been fully dispensed with after the highest court constitutionally empowered to deal with such matters have done so. ECOWAS will be making a grave mistake if they send in troops to The Gambia at this stage. What the regional body should be concerned with now is to send in fearless and impartial judges to that country from Nigeria as requested to dispense with the matter speedily and judiciously. It is only after the country’s highest courts have affirmed Barrow as winner and Jammeh refuse to step down and handover to Barrow that a military action would be justified. Another mistake ECOWAS made was their choice of delegation as led by President Muhammadu Buhari to The Gambia as emissaries of peace and democracy to persuade Jammeh to hand over power peacefully and as scheduled. Although Jammeh had earlier accepted defeat and promised to leave the stage on the set date of January 19, 2017, he immediately did an about-turn the moment Barrow made the hasty and politically disingenuous statement of probing Jammeh’s administration. Jammeh, who from his earlier posture, wanted to play the Goodluck Jonathan card of handing over power to the opposition after an election must have quickly remembered the Nigerian situation where persecution, injustice, oppression, deprivation and gross abuse of the rights of officials of the immediate past administration in particular and the citizens in general have been the order of the day, and recanted his earlier stance immediately. The appointment of Buhari as leader of ECOWAS delegation to The Gambia is a monumental error. How can a man with no democratic credentials lead a mission of democracy? How can a man who hardly obeys court orders as in the case of Sheikh El Zakzaky, Nnamdi Kanu et al be the one appointed to mediate in a constitutional process? Not even the orders of the same ECOWAS court on Sambo Dasuki has been obeyed by Buhari months after they were given, yet, it is the same man ECOWAS gave the enviable responsibility to convince Jammeh about the need to leave the stage a democrat! Buhari should not have been on that delegation not to talk of leading it. With the continued denial of campaign promises and policy somersaults, no leader would take Buhari’s word for whatever it is worth. With the rascally behavior of some of our security agencies under Buhari’s watch leading to many innocent citizens being killed just for exercising their rights to assemble and protest, among others, in Jammeh’s mind, Buhari’s discussion with him might just seem like a dictator talking to a dictator about the need for a peaceful transition. In fact, during those dialogues with Buhari, Jammeh might just be saying in his mind, “with your antecedents and current style of leadership, how am I sure that you would hand over power to your opponent if you were defeated in 2019?” No doubt, Buhari is not the ideal example of a democratic leader. Such a leader like him needs the intervention of proven democrats to guide him on the inalienable ingredients of democracy. So for The Gambia to pass through this phase peacefully and speedily, ECOWAS should facilitate the immediate transfer of judges from Nigeria to that country as requested and allow all parties exhaust all their constitutional rights and provisions made available to them. While that is going on, democrats with proven track record of not being power-drunk and who also have themselves handed power over to members of the opposition including well respected figures like Nigeria’s Goodluck Jonathan, Ghana’s John Mahama, Kofi Annan, Emeka Anyaoku etc should have been in the delegation to the exclusion of the likes of our own Buhari. It is only after the courts might have ruled against him and such entreaties have failed that a military action becomes desirable. For now, let the delegation be reshuffled and let The Gambia run the full course of its own constitutional provisions. That way we do not attempt to right a wrong with another wrong. General Overseer (Worldwide) of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has warned the Federal Government to stop meddling in church matters. Adeboye, who spoke yesterday at the Redemption Camp, Kilometre 46, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Ogun State, expressed worries over deliberate anti-Christian laws by the Federal Government against Christians. “The government has been showing increasing interest in church affairs. Unfortunately, for us in RCCG, it might not be very helpful,” Adeboye said. He accused the government of not allowing the church (RCCG) to continue with its stipulated lifetime 100 per cent salaries to its pensioners. “For example, when I decided on what will be the pension of our pastors, what I decided is not done anywhere in the world. That somebody will retire and continue to earn full salaries all his lifetime. “This, I started, but government stepped in and made a law that we should be contributing to pension fund. “We have to obey and we started doing that. The result is that pastors don’t get as much as they were getting under our own previous arrangement. But, what can we do? We have to obey the law,” he disclosed. Adeboye disclosed that other fresh laws had been enacted by the government to ruffle the feathers of the church in the country, with a particularly targeted at the RCCG. Adeboye also urged members of RCCG to register as card-carrying members of political parties ahead 2019 general elections. His words: “Now there are fresh laws. We have a rough idea of what the law is about. “Some people believe that RCCG is becoming too influential and we’re going to be more influential. When you get home, tell members to join a political party. “Join a party and become a card-carrying member of any party. Just join any party. We shall decide issues right from the ward level. “If you are not active at ward level, you’ll do what they plan and say at the top. Enrol in any party of your choice and have a card. When holding meetings at ward level to choose delegates, be there.” “One Muslim in Ibadan said years ago that he didn’t know what’s wrong with Christians; that we help them to occupy political positions and refused to capitalise on our population. That’s going to change from now,” Adeboye stated. http://dailypost.ng/2017/01/09/adeboye-blasts-fg-laws-christians-tells-rccg-prepare-2019/ |
Obviously all is not well within the fold of the All Progressives Congress in Edo state especially in the Oredo council area. An Oredo Magistrates’ Court in Benin has ordered the remand in prison custody, of two chieftains of the party, Osakpamwan Eriyo and Sunday Osagbona, for alleged attempted murder. The Chief Magistrate, M. C. Ojobo, who said she lacked jurisdiction to entertain the case, directed that both accused persons be remanded in Oko Medium Security prison. She said the prison has proper health facilities and directed that the case file be sent to the Directorate of Public Prosecution for legal advice. The accused persons were charged with the attempted murder of Osaro Idah, Secretary of the state’s APC. Eriyo is the State Youth Leader of the APC and Chairman of the Road Transport Employers Association, RTEAN while Sunday is the Ward 3 Chairman of the APC in Oredo Local Government. No pleas were taken as Eriyo protested being handcuffed in the court room. He said: “Am I a criminal? Did I kill anybody? Why are they charging me for attempted murder? “I didn’t do anything. It is the governor that is oppressing me.” Their Counsel, Usunobun Evbayiro, urged the court to grant them custody in the police clinic because of their ill-health. He said his clients were hypertensive, asthmatic and diabetic and they needed constant medical attention. “The first accused person collapsed in police station. It was the police doctors that revived him. ” I urge you to use your discretion to order him to be kept in police hospital so that police doctors can attend to him. It is for him not to die in custody.” The case was adjourned till January 13, 2017 for mention. Supporters of the APC chieftains had earlier staged protests at the headquarters of the Edo State Police Command to demand their release. The police, however, ignored the protesters and whisked the accused, under heavy security, to the court. Similarly officials of RTEAN and suspected thugs attempted to storm the court room but they were barred by the police. The APC chieftains were arrested following a petition sent to the police by Osaro Idah that they threatened his life http://thenewsroom.ng/article.php?id=138 |

By Henry Umoru ABUJA- STRONG indications have emerged that President Muhammadu Buhari may drop no fewer than ten cabinet Ministers that form the present Federal Executive Council, FEC while some would be asked to swap portfolios. A source said that President Buhari will engage in cabinet reshuffle for the turn of the year. Already, two vacancies are existing in the ministerial portfolio, following the death of Barrister James Ocholi, the late Minister of State for Labour and Employment in March and the exit last week of the Minister of Environment, Amina Mohammed. The Environment Minister is leaving the present administration to take up the post of Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations. Sources close to the Presidency and the National Assembly said yesterday in Abuja that the Presidency was wary of a continuation of recent bashing from the Senate, a situation that had seen a number of nominees dropped during confirmation. And Obaseki want to hand it over to Oshomhole. Politicians are a very funny lot. The APC chairman in Edo state was a commissioner in Igbinedion govt. The same Igbinedion family sponsored Oshomhole in 2007. Then the Igbinedion family were saints. Now that they are sponsoring Ize- Iyamu, they have become demon. Edo are wiser. Come next Wednesday, we shall all troop out to vote in Iyamu. The wool had fallen from our eyes. |
ABUJA – The Bring Back Our Girls BBOG movement has advised President Muhammadu Buhari to seize the initiative in rescuing the 218 abducted Chibok school girls rather than granting unnecessary powers to the abductors, the Boko Haram sect, by asking them to determine the rescue options. The movement stated this Tuesday in Abuja during another failed attempt to march on the presidential villa. It said 869 days since the abduction, no evidence of persuasive, deliberate and result- targeted action has been conveyed by the president. President Buhari had on the side-lines of the sixth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD VI) recently held in Nairobi, Kenya suggested a willingness to swap the girls with Boko Haram fighters preferring that the terrorists engaged an international Non-Governmental Organization in the intermediation process if they so wish. “If they (the terrorists) do not want to talk to us directly, let them pick an internationally recognized Non-Governmental Organization, convince them that they are holding the girls and that they want Nigeria to release a number of Boko Haram leaders in detention, which they are supposed to know”, Mr Buhari had stated. However, the BBOG said it was at a loss as to why terrorists have to determine the process for rescue. It lamented the current situation whereby it appears the president now heavily relies on media reports to gather intelligence about the terrorists. In the address, jointly signed by its leaders, Oby Ezekwesili and Aisha Yesufu, BBOG said; “We fail to understand why our Federal Government is giving so much powers to determine process and first mover actions to the terrorists. We have always maintained that the President has the powers to assemble all relevant intelligence assets required for determining the best action in terms of lowest risk option. Many countries with superior capabilities have indicated willingness to help our Government gather security and intelligence assets on this and other related North East challenges. We were therefore extremely shocked to read Mr. President state, that ‘some of the information about the division in Boko Haram is already in the press and I have read it in the papers about the conflict in their leadership’. Are we right to conclude from that statement that our President merely relies on newspaper reports like the rest of the Nigerian public for information on such an important and monumental tragedy? This is a grave basis for concern to our movement. “So, while we welcome the statement, we counter that it sounds too tentative and lacking of the conviction, decisiveness, strong ownership, and urgent actions required to #BringBackOurGirls. This tragedy must no longer be allowed to linger any further! It is time to act with the fiercest urgency and the authority that must lead this action is our President, Commander – in-Chief – of-the-Armed-Forces”. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/08/chibok-girls-swapping-stop-giving-much-powers-terrorists-bbog-charges-buhari/ |
