Just last week he made a statement through his facebook page that the rate of crime increase in River state is as a result of salary owed to pension and civil servants in the state by Amaechi administration, that as a result of that, their children has resorted to robbery, kidnapping as a means of livelihood. But someone countered him that PDP in the state played politics with everything including arming the youths with sophisticated weapons during electioneering campaign and now those arms and ammunition are still with the youths, hence the increase in crime. Media aide to Gov Wike escapes assassination attempt Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, Mr Opunabo Nko-Tariah, Thursday night escaped assassination bid on his life. The media aide who narrated the incident to newsmen in Port Harcourt yesterday said unknown gunmen opened fire on his vehicle with Registration number, Rivers 105 RVG at Israel Ama bridge, Buguma community in Asari Toru local government area. Opunabo Inko-Tariah (right) Wondering how he escaped, the media aide, Mr Nko-Tariah said he still could not imagine how he survived the shooting, targeted at his vehicle. He said the volleys of gunshots smashed one of the windscreens of the car, adding that while the shooting was on his Police escort told him not to stop which he did. He said at a point, the escort who was by his side in the vehicle had to quickly open his door and shot back at the assassins. “I am still shocked over what happened. I was completely confused. The police escort told me not to stop the car and that I should continue to move on. It was God that save my life. Exposed! Why EFCC arrested Akpabio The arrest of former governor of Akwa Ibom State Governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio, by the operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission yesterday might not be unconnected with his refusal to honour an earlier invitation to appear before them on August 27, 2015. Findings by Saturday Vanguard revealed that Akpabio incurred the wrath of the anti-graft agency for not turning up on the said date after he had been duly served with the summons to appear and answer questions relating to series of petitions written against him on bordering on the abuse of office, diversion of funds and abuse of public office. The petitions were sent in by an Abuja-based lawyer, Leo Ekpenyong and native of the state and Oro Youth Movement, one of the socio-political groups in the state, aleging massive looting of Akwa Ibom State funds by the Akpabio administration. As a prelude to bringing the former governor to justice, the EFCC summoned and interrogated top officials of the administration who worked with him, including the former Finance Commissioner, who is now a Senator, like Akpabio. However, Akpabio, who was summoned by the agency to appear on August 27, 2015, did not do so having moved against the invitation of the EFCC Chairman, Ibrahim Lamorde, by the Senate over unremitted funds. Akpabio had written a letter to the Senate leadership disassociating himself and other PDP members in the Senate from supporting the probe of Lamorde, claiming that it was ‘inappropriate’ at this time. Based on that subtle support for the EFCC boss, he jetted out of the country a few days after not responding to the summon by the agency. However, Saturday Vanguard learnt from competent sources that most of the officials who served under Akpabio who were invited by the EFCC to state what they knew about the diversion of funds of the state, made incriminating remarks against the former governor, who is now the Minority Leader in the Senate. It was learnt that the EFCC moved against him apparently because of his initial refusal to honour its invitation and the statements made by officials of his administration, claiming that it was the governor who approved whatever expenditure they incurred while in office and that they had no reason to disobey him. Saturday Vanguard learnt that Mr. Akpabio, accompanied by his lawyer, Mr. Ricky Tarfa, was taken in by EFCC operatives at about 5.20 pm. He was immediately interrogated by a crack team of EFCC operatives, who did not free him as at the time of filing the report, but there were indications he would be freed before the end of the day. An EFCC operative said: Akpabio was brought in at about 5.20 pm accompanied by a few aides and Mr. Rickey Tarfa. “It is not yet known whether he will be allowed to go this night. It depends on how the interrogation goes.” Mr. Ekpenyong had on June 8 petitioned President Muhammadu Buhari and the EFCC, calling for Mr. Akpabio’s probe and accusing him of looting Akwa Ibom state treasury. To confirm the genuineness of the petition against Akpabio, the EFCC had summoned the author, Mr. Ekpenyong, on June 17, to adopt his petition and provide more details to some of the allegations he made against Mr. Akpabio. But the former governor denied all the allegations against him through his former Information Commissioner, Mr. Aniekan Umanah, who is now the current Commissioner for Information in Umana described the contents of the petition by Mr. Ekpenyong as falsehood taken too far. He said the petition betrayed a lack of understanding of the workings of government. Umanah said:“Every sum withdrawn from a government account is tied to a subhead and there must be a budgetary provision. To attribute fraud to withdrawals which had the full sanction of Government and was accommodated in the budget is strange, mischievous and untenable. More so, when one understands that there are checks and balances which guide all aspects of government financial administration,” he said. He claimed that the allegation that the State Government spent N50 billion on the March General Elections falls flat on its face based on his explanations of the workings of government as regards financial transactions. “There was no such provision in the budget of this year and such an amount could not have been paid as an extra-budgetary expenditure and yet salaries and other commitments were met. We challenge the petitioners to provide proof to support this wild allegation. Who was it paid to? How was it paid? Where was it paid? And when was it paid? “Senator Akpabio does not own a 25-storey building in Victoria Island or in any part of the world, as alleged by the petitioner. It is also a patent falsehood that the house at 22 Probyn Road, Ikoyi belongs to Senator Akpabio. It is a rented building which ownership can be verified from Lagos State Lands Registry. “Senator Akpabio does not own the properties mentioned in the petition to belong to him. You can verify the ownership of the properties (5 Okokosi Close, Maitama and Plot 28 Colorado Close, Maitama) from the land registry in Abuja,” he said. He also denied the state received over N2 trillion as oil allocation. “Please do note that the idea that the Akwa Ibom State Government received over N2.5 trillion in the eight years of the Akpabio administration is an outrageous lie. What this suggests is that the State Government received an average of N26 billion monthly for the period. What a lie! From published accounts Akwa Ibom State never received up to N26 billion in any month throughout the period,” Umanah said. EFCC Spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, could not be reached for comments on the story as at the time of going to the press. Vanguard Source: www.daylight.ng/exposed-why-efcc-arrested-akpabio/ |

U.S Govt's Department of Health Finally Admits That Marijuana Kills Cancer Everyone from hippies to several creditable scientists have previously argued that smoking or ingesting the herb can have medicinal benefits. The US government has thrown its weight behind the earth-shattering claims that cannabis kills cancer cells. Everyone from hippies to conspiracy theorists and even several creditable scientists have previously argued that smoking or ingesting the herb can have medicinal benefits. Cancer kills up to 20,000 people worldwide every day, according to global health estimates. Health researchers for the US government claim that cannabinoids - the active ingredients in cannabis, can inhibit the illness by causing cell death and blocking key blood vessels needed by tumours to grow. They say studies in mice and rats show cannabinoids may be able to kill cancer cells while still protecting normal cells. Key chemical ingredients in marijuana were found effective in fighting against colon cancer, liver cancer, breast cancer and several other forms of the disease. It was also suggested that cannabidiol can boost the effectiveness of chemotherapy without any of the nasty side effects. A health researcher on the US government's Cancer.org website claimed: "Studies in mice and rats have shown that cannabinoids may inhibit tumor growth by causing cell death, blocking cell growth, and blocking the development of blood vessels needed by tumors to grow. Laboratory and animal studies have shown that cannabinoids may be able to kill cancer cells while protecting normal cells. A study in mice showed that cannabinoids may protect against inflammation of the colon and may have potential in reducing the risk of colon cancer, and possibly in its treatment. A laboratory study of delta-9-THC in hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer) cells showed that it damaged or killed the cancer cells. The same study of delta-9-THC in mouse models of liver cancer showed that it had antitumor effects." Source: http://www.tori.ng/news/7294/us-govts-department-of-health-finally-admits-that.html |

BEVERLY HILLS, August 03, (THEWILL) – United States congressman, Rep. Darrel Edward Issah, representing California, Monday said his government would relax or completely lift the application of the Leahy Law on Nigeria, which has made it difficult for the military to get crucial weapons from the United States and its allies. THEWILL can report that the United States as well as Amnesty International both alleged human rights violations by the Nigerian military in its ongoing military operations against the Boko Haram, but the Nigerian military denies the allegations. The Leahy Law prohibits the Department of State and Department of Defence from providing military assistance to foreign military units that violate human rights. Rep. Issah, who spoke to journalists after a meeting with Service Chiefs and Ministry of Defence personnel in Abuja, said the reversal of the Law on Nigeria followed the policy of the new military command with regards to the ongoing military operations in the country. “There were a number of things that were discussed at the meeting but basically the need for additional technical support including overhead surveillance. This was discussed because it is important in the fight against Boko Haram. “This is because of the trust in the new regime which has began the process of ensuring that the military’s professionalism in the battle field is made in a way that we all can be confident that the rule of law is followed. “Following this development, we have began the process of lifting restriction under the Leahy Law but the vast majority of the support U.S. provides will be given regardless of the restrictions,’’ he said. Issah added that the U.S. would provide other forms of support that would not only boost the military’s capabilities but would also create the environment to rebuild devastated communities. He said the U.S. through its agencies in Nigeria would help rebuild and rehabilitate communities and victims of insurgency in the northeast. “We are looking forward to working with the President and the military to rebuild the confidence of the people of Nigeria in the professionalism of the military. “To make the military something that the people will rely on as the nation tries to clear insurgents and protect the civilians; that is important to the new president of Nigeria, our president and it is also important to the congress. “But we are looking forward to a great difference in the relationship, a proactive relationship and one in which we can provide a greater level of support,’’ he said. On his part, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Defence, Mr. Ismaila Aliyu, said the visit was a sign of the renewed confidence in Nigeria’s military on the global scene. He said Nigeria now enjoyed a greater level of confidence and trust in the international community, stressing that it would impact positively on the nation’s efforts in repositioning its economy. “The U.S. believes in Nigeria, they have trust and confidence in Nigeria, that is why they are here. On the issue of human rights, the U.S. is pleased with what we have been doing in recent times to address the gaps that may have existed in the past. “This visit is a follow up to Mr. President’s visit to the U.S., we have said it and will continue to state that the visit was of great benefit to Nigeria, it has rekindled confidence in the relations between the two countries,’’ he said. NAN reports that Issah led a delegation from the U.S. congress judicial committee to the meeting with Nigeria’s top ranking defence officials. Other issues that dominated discussions between officials of the two countries include justice reforms and support for devastated communities, among others. SAN FRANCISCO, August 04, (THEWILL) – Barring any last minute changes, President Muhammadu Buhari will appoint Dr. Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu, the Executive Vice Chairman of ExxonMobil Africa as the new Group Managing Director (GMD) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). Sources familiar with the development, who asked not be named because they are not authorized to speak on the matter, told THEWILL that President Buhari met with Dr. Kachikwu on Monday night to finalise talks on his vision for the state owned corporation, which has been enmeshed in allegations of corruption and dubious accounting practices. “Dr. Kachikwu will be announced anytime from today,” an often reliable source told THEWILL. The appointment according to insiders is one of the many to come in the President’s bid to rid the NNPC of corruption. Nigeria earns billions of dollars from crude oil, which finances about 85 percent of the federal budget, but an estimated 250, 000 barrels of crude is stolen daily by thieves and sold abroad, the President said during his recent visit to Washington D.C. Dr. Kachikwu, who has been scheduled to perform a wider role in his new portfolio, is a very well respected technocrat with an impeccable record. He has never held a political appointment, THEWILL gathered. ExxonMobil insiders say he is a workaholic and widely connected in the international community. He is expected to use his vast experience to restructure the NNPC, pursue creditors and recover missing funds, as well as reposition the NNPC into a world-class corporation amongst several other tasks, the sources said. THEWILL further gathered that Dr. Kachikwu is one of the highest top ranking black men in ExxonMobil. Our sources say his candidacy is being promoted by the West and influential patrons who are frustrated by the rot in the petroleum sector. According to his resume obtained by THEWILL from Zoominfo.com, Kachikwu, from Delta State, is a First Class Graduate of Law from the University of Nigeria Nsukka and the Nigerian Law School, where he was best graduand and multiple awards winner in both Institutions. He also has a Masters and Doctorate Degree in Law from Harvard Law School USA, with distinctions. A former investment attorney in the United States, the publisher of several magazine titles, has also taught Law at Harvard, Nigerian Law School and several globally acclaimed institutions. He has three published Law books in Investment Law and Contracts and numerous articles in various Journals. In his capacity as the Vice Chairman and General Counsel of ExxonMobil, he oversees the compliance programs of the company and advices on issues related to adherence with compliance regulations and anti-corruption laws in Africa. Before he joined Mobil, Kachikwu worked as General Counsel of Texaco Upstream and Downstream in Nigeria.
