Former President Olusegun Obasanjo For over ten days now the polity has been suffused with the verbiage of the letter written by former President Olusegun Obasanjo to President Goodluck Jonathan. The latter has been under pressure to respond to the issues Obasanjo raised in his letter. And for a while, it seemed the silence from the presidency implied consent, or that the President was too dazed by the vitriolic content of the letter to respond. But yesterday, the President broke his worrisome silence, when he called a press conference and read out a lengthy reply to the Ota farmer. To be fair to President Jonathan, he tried to clear the fog on some of the issues, but not without throwing some jabs here and there at the former president. I captured some, yes, some of the details in the response of the President. He started like this: “His Excellency Chief Olusegun Okikiola Matthew Obasanjo, former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. You must have wondered if I did not know what to reply you after you published what has become your latest act of infamy, in the name of a letter titled “Before it is Too Late” which you wrote to me. Sir, I must confess that your letter took me unawares. As a respected Statesman, I did not expect this unbecoming means of communicating with me, if the essence was not to play to the gallery. The other confession I must make is that some of the issues and accusations you made against me, were complete news to me. I have long set up committees to investigate the accusations and the reports are already coming in. Before I deal on the specifics of your letter, permit me to say that, Sir, you must purge yourself of the overflowing messianic complex you have always operated in. Yes, I had said that after God and my parents, you are the next most important person in my life. But that did not mean you are my God or the provider of my oxygen. When goats are sold, the owner releases the rope. But you have chosen to hold on to the rope most tenaciously. That is the problem. Indeed, we would have ignored you completely after your dear daughter, Dr Iyabo Obasanjo- Bello, helped to put most of the issue in the right political perspectives in her own letter to you. But we needed to do this for the records. I am somewhat disappointed that you are lamenting my performance in government. His Excellency, I am sure we would have moved at a faster pace if the right foundation was laid while you were in charge. As for the issue of whether or not I will seek re-election in 2015, I am bemused that you are making a huge drama out of this even when you know I am constitutionally permitted to seek re-election. I cannot remember the incidents of my said promise not to seek re- election. But even if I did sir, am I not entitled to change of mind on any issue depending on the currency of information available to me? I do not expect you to be basing your conclusions, at your level, on the so-called fantasy of Body language. And pray, were we not all witnesses of how you tried to manipulate the National Assembly to offer you the illegal third term chance? Senator Ken Nnamani is still alive. It is pure mischief powered by uncharitable inclinations to accuse me of “double game’ in the support of gubernatorial candidates in some states. I personally participated in the campaigns of all our candidates. If they lost the elections, I cannot be blamed for that, as I am resolved to distance myself from manipulating electoral outcomes as it used to be in the past… you know what I mean You made me look like the prince of corruption because of the ancient malaise of crude oil theft. Sir, it did not start with me. I have tried to combat it. There are many committees and task forces in place to check the roguery. Besides, it is even exaggerated under me. Did you not hear that the garrulous CBN governor, who raised the false alarm of missing $49.8 Billion has eaten the humble pie by recanting? But sir, with all sense of modesty, this does not compare with the degree of sleaze that characterized the PTDF scam between you and your former Vice, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. We did not forget. We have reformed the EFCC to be an indiscriminate fierce attack dog, unlike when it was reduced to a weapon against enemies. As for the crisis in the PDP, we know of supposed elders who have been fraternizing with the renegade governors, the reason they were recalcitrant and irreconciliable. You can only force a horse to the river, you cannot force it to drink water. These renegade governors simply refused to drink water at the bank of reconciliation. I am a Knight of the Anglican Church. I have never plotted to shed blood for any reason. No I have never. Therefore, the phantom alarm of training of killers are nothing but a tale from the mountains. Only the naïve are taken in by them. God will judge such accusers harshly. By the Grace of Almighty God, I will finish well and strong. My good people of Nigeria are behind me, contrary to what you may wish to think. I have told the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) to ensure that they announce national fasting of forty days and forty nights to thwart all the plans of the enemies of Nigeria, no matter who they are. That they must declare that no weapon fashioned against Nigeria, be it from Boko Haram or whoever, will prosper. Finally, let me assure you that the transformation agenda of my government has been attracting international investors and in no time, the entire nation will soon become one large construction and industrial yard. We shall all be witnesses. Please accept my best assurances of …” Just as the President finished reading the letter to pressmen, his spokesman, Dr Rueben Abati , looking agitated with creases on his forehead, stepped out to co-ordinate the question and answer session, as over a dozen hands were already up, desirous to fire follow-up questions at Mr President. Abati was just announcing the modality of the question and answer session, when the loud blast of a heavy duty truck woke me from my deep sleep, as my house is by the roadside. As I sprung up, I was looking for President Jonathan, asking breathlessly, “where is he, where is the president?”, and my children began to ask if I was alright. It was only then I realized I have been dreaming. Hmmmmm. Source: www.thisdaylive.com/articles/jonathan-8216-s-reply-to-obasanjo/167021/ |
As the Presidency prepares a reply to the 18-page letter written by former President Olusegun Obasanjo to President Goodluck Jonathan on the state of the nation, indications emerged, yesterday, that the former leader was not expecting any reply but action from Jonathan. A competent source told Sunday Vanguard that Obasanjo was more interested in Jonathan addressing the core issues he raised in his letter rather than getting a reply to his damning missive, entitled, ‘Before it is too late’. The source, which also denied any breakfast meeting between Obasanjo and Jonathan in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, said the story was made up by those who tried to play down the importance of the former leader’s letter. The source said,”The truth of the matter is that former President Obasanjo is not expecting President Jonathan to reply him. Absolutely no. The President did not consider it needful to respond to previous letters privately written to him by the former head of state and he does not expect any reply to this one. “I can tell you that Obasanjo wrote the letter with the best intentions for Jonathan and Nigeria and what he wants from the President is courageous and timely actions to save Nigeria from the brink. That’s all. “Obasanjo will be a happy Nigerian if appropriate steps are taken by President Jonathan to address the burning issues of corruption and other challenges that threaten to bring this country down. “There is absolutely no reason to expect a reply from the Presidency when previous letters written to him were not even acknowledged.” It was however learnt, at the weekend, that presidential aides have drafted a response to Obasanjo’s letter. The response was said to be awaiting Jonathan’s approval. Asked to justify the breakfast parley between the former President and Jonathan in Kenya on the day the bromide of Obasanjo’s letter was feasted on by the media, the source said there was no meeting between the two leaders. The source said that Obasanjo and Jonathan only met by chance and exchanged pleasantries as they lodged in the same hotel in Nairobi. Obasanjo stirred controversy when he wrote a letter to Jonathan drawing his attention to myriad of issues capable of taking Nigeria to the brink if not addressed. But the Presidency fired back, describing the letter as inciting, provocative and self- serving. Presidential spokesman, Reuben Abati, who’s issued a statement, indicated that Jonathan would make a formal response but did not say when he would do so. AT last the Federal Government and the leadership of Academic Staff Union of Universities on Wednesday reached a comprise to end the over five month old industrial action that had grounded Nigerian universities. This was sealed by signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the implementation of all contending issues in the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement as midwifed by President Goodluck Jonathan. Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Dr. MacJohn Nwaobiala signed on behalf of the Federal Government while ASUU President, Dr. Nasir Isa Fagge signed for ASUU with the President of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Abdulwaheed Omar as witness. The MoU was signed in the presence of five Vice Chancellors including that of University of Port Harcourt, Ibadan and Kano as well as the executive secretary of National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Julius Okojie and the former executive secretary of Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Professor Mahmood Yakubu. Details of the MoU were not readily made available to newsmen, however, the ASUU president, Dr Nasir Fagge Isa disclosed that the agreement captured the main areas of the union’s demand including the deposit of N200 billion in a dedicated account in Central Bank of Nigeria, the non- victimisation clause, infrastructural development among others. An elated supervising minister of education, Barr Nyesom Wike described the occasion as ‘historic’ and the happiest day in his tenure as a supervising minister of education. According to Wike, all contending issues have been resolved to the satisfaction of both parties. He said: “ But let me say clearly that today is not just historic but one of the happiest days in my life since I became the Supervising Minister of Education. “As you are all aware, ASUU has been on strike for well over five months on the account of their resolve to bring about a new lease of life to all public universities. “Following Mr. President’s personal intervention, the marathon meeting he had on 4th November, 2013 with the leadership of ASUU and other union leaders, all residual issues were resolved. Nigerians from all walks of life had expressed optimism that the strike will soon be called off. “Unfortunately and sadly too, this was not to be due to ASUU insistence that the Federal Government must take further practical steps or show good faith to the implementation of the agreement. “As a responsible and responsive government have duty to restore normalcy to our university system so that our children can resume school to pursue that educational careers, consequently the Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities were directed by the Pro-Chancellors to immediately reopen the universities for academic activities while the minor discrepancies are being sorted out. “Today I’m very pleased to announce that all contending issues between the Federal Government and ASUU have been resolved to satisfaction of the parties. “Let me emphasize that we recognize and appreciate ASUU’s patriotic role and commitment toward ensuring that our universities are well- funded, resourced and run like their counterparts in the world. “Thus, we are all partners in progress and there was no victor, no vanquished in the struggle of this nature so, long as our goals remain noble, not accentuated by parochial interest and targeted at moving our nation forward,” he said. The minister however expressed the government appreciation to all stakeholders that contributed in the resolution of the crises. ASUU President assured that National Executive Council of the union would meet within the week to call off the strike, though he said he could not unilaterally do so. He noted that it was a selfless struggle for the betterment of Nigerian university system, stressing that if all the content of the agreement is religiously implemented, Nigerian universities would begin to generate revenue more than the crude oil. Your handheld device could hold law enforcement accountable The average Nigerian in a uniform thinks he is above the law. He drives against traffic at great speed, and is careless in a convoy. When asked to pay his bus fare, he can beat up the conductor for not acknowledging him as a 'staff.' His car chases erring 'danfo' buses by hitting them continuously with his vehicle and throwing passengers into panic. And since the 'okada' ban in Lagos, there's no telling how many he has confiscated. If his uniform is yellow and wine, he is more interested causing more traffic to victimize offenders than in making the roads freer. But technology has provided a way out of this neo-military-era. An official of the Lagos state Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) is now on the run for accepting a bribe from a road user. These things happen every day, but this official is a scapegoat-he was caught on camera. 1. Prepare beforehand: Don't wait for the climax. As soon as you sense illicit behavior about to take place, be camera ready. Fumbling with your camera in the heat of the moment could turn ugly; so when you begin to smell the action, check you battery, memory space, and click on your recording icon. 2. Play your part right: When it comes to i-reporting, you could sometimes be an actor in your own movie. If you're being assaulted, cry all the tears necessary; if a bribe is demanded of you, negotiate or grovel. Simply put, behave as you would have if the camera wasn't there. 3. Crash course in video recording: When it comes to video quality, the quality of the camera goes a long way. But even with a low quality camera, you can still make some impact. It is usually better to record with your camera in a horizontal instead of vertical position. If you're involved in the incident, keep your camera away from you; at a vantage point where it can view as much as possible, or in the hands of someone you trust who is not directly involved. Also, you aren't going to be scored for excellent shots, so try not to look into your phone too much. 4. Don't be too obvious about it: If you want your phone ceased or broken, or if you enjoy being beaten to pulp by lawless law enforcement agents, then be sure to shove the camera in their face. But if you want to save your phone, and the figure of your face, be discrete. Avoid letting the perpetrator know that he will regret his move for a long time, if you do, he'll make you regret yours. 5. Keep your phone off the radar: Some people don't just know when to call. Don't let anyone spoil your sting video, keep your phone off the mobile network before you begin recording. 6. Get a backup plan: To be on the safe side, try recording with more than one camera if possible. 7. Upload immediately: As soon as you have access to your phone, export the video either by email, whatsapp or by uploading it on a social media platform such as youtube or channelstv. If you are at risk and need to delete the video as soon as possible, be sure you have properly exported it to another platform. 8. Truth and motive: Sometimes, videos can be manipulated to misrepresent the truth. This is totally against the ethics of i-reporting. The idea is to check our law enforcement, not to victimize anyone. So as you go about you recording activism, fight for truth, with the right motive-to see a corruption free Nigeria. http://odili.net/news/source/2013/nov/22/322.html |

Thank you guys for bringing up this topic here, let me share my story here. I reside in PH but later got a got in Owerri, when i started looking for house in one of the good areas in Owerri, i met a Agent who showed me a house that the current occupant wants to sublet the house and leave, i followed d agent but @ a point he pulled out that he doesn't understand d guy but the fact that i liked the house and the environment i continued but this time i became smarter. I called the guy and we met in one of the Mr Biggs in owerri from this point i started recoding alllllll our discussion, he told me he paid for 2yrs n has stayed for only 11months,he got a job in PH that's why he's leaving Owerri to PH, the place is lonely and his fience wouldn't like to stay alone......all cock and bull was recorded, during one of our gist he mistakingly told me where his parents stays in Aba, i recorded it and send a friend in aba to verify for me, later while he was preparing for his grandma burial i copied there village add. We agreed and i paid him cash (#200,000/1yr), he wrote and agreement and both of us signed, i put his work ID and drivers licence on the agreement and photocopy collected my copy and moved moved in meanwhile i said he will tell the landlady I'm his brother that returned from NYSC, while cleaning the house i saw a form where the fience filled her full details i collected n secured. The guy looks genuine even when i ask people around they kept on saying his a very person even his neighbour said he is a good person but I'm still not convince. 2 months after payment i lost the job, while trying to figure out the way forward the next month which is d third month the landlady came and said his been looking for me that my brothers money expired last month so they want me to pack his things out of d house. At this point if u were in my shoes what will you do ??. . . . . Immediately i said ok no problem ma, that was even the reason why i came, because i know if i tell the lady anything she will call d guy and he will be on d run. How i caught him: Meanwhile before seeing the landlady I'v told d guy i lost ma job and won't be staying again so if he sees someone who is interested in the house he can give out the house. So he has been calling me for the keys so he will show it some oda people maybe to collect more money or even remove my few things from d house and hand it over to the landlady i dnt know. On dat day D after speaking with d landlady, luckily the landlady spoke with him before coming to the house, he later called me and was demanding for the keys, i told him my cousin i gave the keys to in owerri is with the keys he demanded for my cousin's fone number. My cousin is a P.A to an S.A to the Governor so i explained to my cousin and d oga orderly in the office, i told them i will give d dude my cousin no and they will plan a place to meet, the orderly with plain cloth will hang aound once he comes to collect the keys he will be arrrested. Fortunately the game plan worked and he was arrested they called they called me to come with d driver and d second police man and we all went to d station. His claim: When i told him the landlady asked me to vacate the house that ur rent expired 2 months after our agreement, he said is a lie and claimed he told me from d begining that when d house expire he will balance me to pay the landlady @ dis point i played our discussion to the police and brought d agreement with his ID's on it, the police threw him to cell. How i got my money He started pleading with him to allow him come out and raise the money, i disagreed but later his elder brother came and after much talk talk talk we went to intercontinental bank where he withdrew 200k n gave to me sharply i pay it into my account, go to station police said i should go n bring that money its an exhibit, meanwhile my cousin orderly said if i bring d money i won't see it again, the IPO was mad at me dat i need to bring exhibit to d station. Insist i must get my full cash but he pleaded n gave me extra 30k, i used this one to settle my cousin, d oderly and some few police men they find my way bak to ph and abandone them dia, when the IPO called me i told him if d guy pay d balance of 20k he should collect. It was easy but i learnt a lot of lesson from the deal and I'm sure you too can learn without being a victim. Thank you . |
..............to commemorate independence anniversary The Federal Government has ordered 53 custom made goldplated iPhones from a United Kingdom-based company, Gold and Co, to commemorate the country’s 53rd independence anniversary on October 1. A Bristol-born businessman based in Dubai, Mr. Amjad Ali, who runs the luxury goods firm, disclosed this in an interview with The Independent of London. He said Nigeria had joined his growing list of clients which include royal families, governments and minted customers across Russia, China and the Middle East who have ordered the gold-plated devices that cost up to £50,000 (N12.2m); meaning that the potential bill for Nigeria could be up to N649m. According to him, basic models in gold or rose gold cost from £3,000. The iPhones ordered by the Federal Government will carry the national emblem. “We will engrave them with the coat of arms, a shield and two horses,” he said. The 42-year-old entrepreneur, who grew up in Glasgow, has pre-ordered hundreds of new iPhones. His team at Gold and Co. will set to work the day after launch before delivering the devices to luxury retailers. “We strip the units down and then plate them in copper, nickel and then pure gold,” he told The Independent. “We have limited units per region and each is numbered and placed in a handmade wooden box with a certificate of authenticity and wax seal.” Ali typically delivers 50 devices a month, including Blackberries and iPads, but orders rose to more than 300 a month when the iPhone 5 was launched last year. The firm expects greater demand still for the sixth-generation device, announced yesterday. Gold and Co.’s customers have included the Saudi royal family, which, Ali says, ordered a gold iPhone studded with hundreds of diamonds, including a giant piece that served as the device’s “home” button. The bill: £50,000. The company has also supplied an engraved gold iPad to each of the rooms at the luxury “six-star” Burj Al Arab hotel in Dubai. For the new iPhone, Ali has added a platinum option to the gold and rose gold currently offered. “Muslim men are not supposed to wear gold,” he explains. “We had government departments for example cancelling orders, so now we’re launching platinum to tap into a huge market. Most importantly, it’s a third colour. Everyone wants to be different.” The orders come at a time government is complaining of shortage of funds to pay off striking university lecturers who have refused to work for two month now due to the failure of government to pay outstanding allowances. In a swift reaction however, the Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, denied that the Federal Government had placed such an order. Speaking through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Joseph Mutah, Maku said: “We have never heard anything like that. The story is utterly false and mischievous, there is no order like that at least by this government”, he told National Mirror last night.
