Emeritus Professor of History and Second Republic Senator, Banji Akintoye, on Thursday, described the first Civilian Governor of Lagos State, late Chief Lateef Jakande as the original builder of Lagos State. In a statement by his Media and Communications Manager, Maxwell Adeleye, Senator Akintoye labelled Jakande as a man whose life was a model to the younger generation of Nigerian Nationalists during the reign of Unity Party of Nigeria, UPN, in the Second Republic. In his tribute, Akintoye said Jakande has been the one playing the role of an Elder brother to him since he (Akintoye) returned from his 25 years of professional sojourn in the United States of America, USA, in 2016. Akintoye, the leader of the umbrella body of Yoruba Socio-Cultural and Self-Determination Groups, Ilana Omo Oduduwa said the late Jakande was loyal to the well-being of his people and his achievements were titanic in the megalopolis building of Lagos State. He said: “Baba Jakande has been playing the role of a senior brother to me since I came back from America in 2016. I have been close to his family as his younger brother. “He was loyal to the wellbeing of his people and he lived his life to serve humanity. His idea of service to the people contributed immensely to the making of the great and people-oriented agenda of the defunct Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN). “In the year of the evolution of UPN, between 1975 to 1978, I served with him under various committees. I was a Secretary to a Committee to which he was a Chairman. “In the years of UPN’s reign in southwestern Nigeria, he made us all proud to belong to the party. His achievements were titanic in the building of Lagos. “The megalopolis that Lagos has become was started within four years under his reign. He built almost all the legacy projects and institutions you can think of today in Lagos State. “Jakande dazzled Nigerians within four years with massive programmes of the provision of schools for the masses of Lagos children without a dint of commercialisation. “He built estates after estates until Jakande estate became the name of the enormous area in Lagos State. “I say with all sense of responsibility that Jakande was the planner and original builder of Alausa, Magodo and Lekki districts of Lagos. “Jakande built Abesan, the largest estate in West Africa in Ipaja-Ayobo area of Lagos State. He never sought to enrich himself. He was a great model to the younger generation of Nigerian nationalists in UPN. Adieu, my great elder brother.” https://www.vanguardngr.com/2021/02/lateefjakande-real-builder-of-lagos-akintoye/ |

In my opinion, it is Nigeria and Nigerians that will ultimately be at the receiving end. All developed country were developed by their intellectuals and not mineral resources. the more intellectuals you have in an economy the better that economy becomes. In Nigeria however, brain drain is draining the country of intellectual gradually and living behind half-baked university graduate/professionals who cannot contribute any meaningful development strides to the economic development of the country. Government have to do more to produce skilled manpower and to keep them in the country for the betterment of the economy, and this is through improved educational system. dawnomike: |

The bolded: what Chidoka pointed out below is not far from the truth. I have been thinking on the same line of thought. Each state are represented at the cadet level but when they begin to grow, some from particular region are always the leaders while others from the other region are always the subordinates. From my observation; those who are always the leaders cannot even express themselves compare to those who are always the subordinate "The security agencies, many people forget that they are recruited on a state-by-state basis so every state is represented." "When you get to the top you find out that only people from a particular section of the country are going to be the heads of the security agencies. That automatically creates a problem because the people from the other section of the country begin to take a lackadaisical attitude to work." |

The House of Representatives Committee on Customs and Excise has directed the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to streamline its Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) valuation system or risk the suspension of the exercise. This was part of the recommendations contained in a report presented by the committee to the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Col. Hameed Ali (Rtd), in Abuja on Monday. VIN is the system used by customs to collect duty on vehicles imported into the country, based on their year of manufacture. The report presented by the Chairman of the committee, Leke Abejide, was based on observations and interactions with customs officers under Zone A, Lagos, during oversight visits to the various commands in the zone. Presenting the report, the lawmaker stated that the committee had observed how the impasse over VIN valuation was pitching customs against importers, licence agents and other stakeholders operating at the nation’s ports. The committee particularly lamented how the issue was affecting revenue generation at Tin Can Island Port, Lagos which depends more on vehicles imports revenues. The report reads in parts: “Revenue of the command is fluctuating due to VIN Valuation that is said to be of two types: standard and non-standard. “This creates problems for operators of the command being an automobile port as importers abandoned their vehicles while some diverted to other neighbouring countries. “Some refused to ship. The command may face dwindling revenue in a short while. If the VIN can’t be streamlined into one within this week, the committee will recommend for its suspension pending (the time) it works as one system.” https://dailytrust.com/imported-vehicles-reps-threaten-to-suspend-customs-duty-system |
The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Cross River state, Sen. Sandy Onor has unveiled ex-Channels ace broadcaster, Emana Duke Ambrose-Amawhe as deputy governorship candidate for the 2023 elections. Vanguard gathered that there has been internal squabble on the selection of a deputy governorship candidate but her unveiling has put all that to rest as the party can now forge ahead in unity with its quest to take over leadership of the state in the 2023 general election. Speaking during the unveiling at the PDP Secretariat, Mary Slessor Rd, Calabar, Monday, Sandy said in the quest for a deputy governorship candidate they consulted stakeholders widely in a bid to ensure that everyone was carried along and on board with the decision to pick Emana as running mate. He said that there were no 100 per cent decisions in politics adding that everyone would sooner or later accept the choice they have made because of the painstaking consultation they embarked on. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2022/07/criver-pdp-governorship-candidate-unveils-ex-channels-tv-broadcaster-as-running-mate/ |

Nigerians are now paying more for petrol despite the official price still fixed at N162.50 and N165 per litre. Independent marketers, who started implementing a new price regime of between N170 to N190 at the weekend, insisted yesterday that it would be difficult for them to sell at the official pump price. Besides, scarcity of the product resurfaced in Lagos, Akure, Ado-Ekiti, Abeokuta, Jos, among other towns in the Southwest. The situation in Abuja worsened at the weekend with long queues at the filling stations where petrol is sold. In Lagos yesterday, many independent stations were shut, the few that were dispensing recorded long queues. It also caused gridlocks on Ikorodu Road, Ikoyi, Ikeja, and Airport Road, among other places. Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) in a statement by its Lagos State Depot (LSD) Secretary, Akeem Balogun, said: “With the current price, there is no way we can sell less than N180 per litre. “Members are hereby advised to sell at a sustainable price within their environment. Just make sure that the price is on your pump. “Kindly contact the Secretariat should you have any authority challenging your operations.” The chaos in the stations that dispensed fuel with a fewer number of pumps was worsened by jerry can-carrying residents in search of the product to power their generators. In Lagos, the queues were most noticeable at filling stations owned by major marketers in traffic-prone areas like Oshodi, Ejigbo, Ikeja, Egbeda, Ikotun Igando, Iyanaiba and Satellite. Nearly all stations operated by independent dealers in the commercial city did not open to motorists. Motorists in Osun, Kwara, Rivers, Delta, Edo, Kano, Katsina, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Anambra, Enugu, Ebonyi, Benue, Nasarawa, Borno, Yobe, Imo, Abia and Gombe had no challenges purchasing fuel from both major and independent dealers, but petrol still sold between N165 and N180 per litre. https://thenationonlineng.net/petrol-marketers-increase-pump-price-amid-scarcity/ |

Six disgruntled chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC), including lawmakers and a former deputy governor, have terminated their membership in the party and have defected to other political parties in Bauchi State. The defections are a major blow to the aspiration of the party to topple the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state in the 2023 governorship election. The incumbent governor, Bala Mohammed, is seeking his second and final term as governor. The gale of defections from the APC blows beyond Bauchi. In some states in the north of the country, aggrieved members of the party are leaving in droves and joining other political parties. Many of the defectors were discontent about the conduct of the party’s primaries. Bauchi APC In Bauchi State, the senator representing Bauchi South District, Lawal Gumau, defected from the APC to the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) after he failed to win the APC primary election to represent his zone. Similarly, Halliru Dauda – Jika, the senator representing Bauchi Central switched parties after he failed to get the governorship ticket of the APC. In the same vein, Yakubu Shehu, the House of Representatives member Bauchi constituency, quit the party after his failed attempt to secure the party’s senatorial ticket. He has not announced the new party he moved to. Though the immediate former deputy governor of the state, Abdu Sule – Katagum, did not contest to be the party’s representative for any elective office during the primaries, he ended his membership of the party for what he described as a “lack of principles”. Other bigwigs who left the party in the state are Farouq Mustapha who contested for the governor’s ticket but lost, and a former House of Representatives member, Ibrahim Mohammed, who contested for the Bauchi North Senatorial seat, and also lost. Katsina In Katsina State, the three House of Representatives members who defected to the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) sought a return ticket but were all defeated. Leading the pack of the defectors is the incumbent House of Representatives member representing the governor’s constituency, Malumfashi/Kafur, Babangida Talau. The other two lawmakers are Armayau Kado representing Kurfi/Dutsin Ma, and Aminu Ashiru of Mani/Bindawa constituency. One of Mr Kado’s legislative aides, Bature Ibrahim confirmed that his boss defected to the NNPP and would now seek to retain his ticket under the NNPP. Mr Talau has “won” the NNPP ticket to contest for the Katsina South Senatorial seat. Two former gubernatorial aspirants, Umar Abdullahi and Garba Dankani (who contested in 2018) left the APC. While Mr Abdullahi who got eight votes during the primary last month, joined his former party, the PDP, Mr DanKani joined the Action Alliance and is now its governorship candidate in Katsina State. In Sokoto, Wamakko still the leader The defectors in Sokoto State, PREMIUM TIMES learnt, are mostly those who were involved in an internal fight with the party leader, Aliyu Wamakko, a former governor. The member representing, Gwadabawa/Illela/, Abdullahi Salame, had fought Mr Wamakko for the control of the party structures. After the decision of the party’s national headquarters to identify Mr Wamakko’s faction as the legally constituted faction, Mr Salame remained in the party but after he lost the governorship primary to Mr Wamakko’s preferred candidate, Ahmed Aliyu, defected to the PDP, the ruling party in the state. Isa Kurdula, the member representing Gudu/Tangaza, also defected to the PDP after failing to get the ticket to re-contest for his seat. A former minister of culture and tourism, Bello Jibril, also joined the PDP but has not made public the reasons for his defection. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/538222-after-primaries-mass-exodus-hits-apc-in-katsina-sokoto-bauchi.html |
