iwaeda: The South-East chapter of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders’ Association of Nigeria on Monday said its interest in the region was purely economic and nothing more.
The Chairman of MACBAN in the zone, Alhaji Gidado Siddiki, stated this while briefing journalists shortly after a meeting of the joint executive council of the group in Enugu.
Siddiki said the clarification became necessary following growing suspicion and speculation in some quarters about the activities of herders in the zone.
He said it was imperative to correct the impression that their interests in the region were beyond economic pursuits.
Siddiki explained that the suspicion that herdsmen were harbingers of Fulani territorial expansionism had degenerated into unhealthy relationships in most parts of the region.
The chairman said such suspicion had made members of the association to be increasingly uncomfortable.
He said herders in the region were desirous of striking harmonious relationships with the people of the area in order to avoid mutual suspicion.
Siddiki stated, “This suspicion is rooted in the speculation that herdsmen are harbingers of Fulani territorial expansionism.
“However, the leadership of MACBAN, under my watch in the South-East, has continued to discuss appreciably well with the individual state governments in the zone.
“I am happy that the dialogue gives us hope for better understanding between our members and their host communities.”
He said the group would not hesitate to report any of its members found to be involved in criminal activities.
He called on the governments of the South-East states to ensure the protection of the body’s members and cattle, adding that herders in the area would be made to take precautionary measures while plying their trade.
Siddiki said that MACBAN recognised that the challenges the herders were faced with in the region were not tpeculiar to the zone, adding that there were bound to be conflicts between people of diverse cultural orientations.
He, however, said it was time to sort out the differences.
The MACBAN leader stated, “We, hereby, jointly resolve to fully lend our efforts toward fostering an enduring and harmonious relationship with our host communities.
“We urge members of our host communities to be more accommodating too.”
Siddiki described the people of the South-East as good and promised that MACBAN would not do anything to create tension in the area.
Trust these barbarians at ur own peril if their mission is truly only economic interests why have they vehemently refused to modernize their business? GUS show is far better in content and entertainment than bbnaija although it's not shown on a 24hrs bases but still preferable. The East is good in business and technology, the West is good in administration and commerce, law and medicine. But it was a pity we planned our agenda to give power ‘at all cost’ to the Northerners. They seemed to be submissive and silly of a kind. Our mission was accomplished by destroying the opposition at all fronts.
“The West led in the fight for … independence, and was punished for asking for freedom. They will not rule Nigeria! Harold Smith confessed that the Census results were announced before they were counted. Despite seeing vast land with no human but cattle in the North, we still gave the North 55 million instead of 32 million. This was to be used to maintain their majority votes and future power bid.”
He stated that the West without Lagos was the most populous in Nigeria at that “time but we ignored that”. The North was seriously encouraged to go into the military. According to him, they believe that the South may attend Western education, but future leaders will always come from military background. Their traditional rulers were to be made influential and super human. The Northerners were given accelerated promotions both in the military and civil service to justify their superiority over the South. Everything was to work against the South. We truncated their good plan for their future.
“I was very sorry for the AG; it was a great party too much for African standard. We planned to destroy Awolowo and Azikiwe well, the West and the East and sowed a seed of discord among them.We tricked Azikiwe into accepting to be president having known that Balewa will be the main-man with power. Lest we foget. In the elections of 1954, there were 162 seats in the Nigerian National Assembly. Out of this, the South had 83 seats and the North had 79 seats since this was based on population. But because Ahmadu Bello was afraid that his corner would not be able to sustain the iniquity bestowed over the rest of the country and dominate it the way he envisaged, he refused to allow Nigeria to have independence.
After the West and the East received self governance, the British overlords, in order to assuage his fears and put Nigeria in his grip, created in 1959, 312 seats for the Nigerian National Assembly without any election or new census.
