Wisdomkosi: Sen. Kalu Turns Constituency To Road Construction Sites (Photos)

The Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, has turned his Constituency to Road construction sites following his return to the Senate after months of incarceration at Correctional Centre.
Sen. Kalu who is representing Abia North Senatorial District at the National Assembly was applauded by the people of Ohafia when IGBERE TV correspondent visited the Asaga-Okon Road to inspect the progress of work.
Speaking with IGBERE TV correspondent, Mr. Francis Eze said Asaga-Okon Road in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State before now was a death trap and commended Senator Kalu for his quick intervention in constructing the road.
He said : "I have always believe that Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has the interest of our people at heart because when you are doing good, people will love you."
"Senator has been changing the narratives of our Constituency and everybody loves him. He is the real change that we want. You can see how he has turned everywhere to road construction sites following his return to the Senate".
"We pray that in 2023, he will aspire for greater position and we will massively vote for him to continue his good works beyond our Constituency, State," he said.
Other residents who spoke with our correspondent equally commended Senator Kalu and prayed for God's blessings upon him.
Naijboy: The Supreme Court, on Wednesday, August 19, overruled a long-held Igbo custom; which forbids a woman from inheriting her late father’s estate; on the grounds that it is discriminatory and conflicts with the provision of the constitution.
According to the ruling, the practice conflicted with section 42(1)(a) and (2) of the 1999 Constitution.
The judgment was on the appeal marked: SC.224/2004 filed by Mrs. Lois Chituru Ukeje; (wife of the late Lazarus Ogbonna Ukeje) and their son; Enyinnaya Lazarus Ukeje against Mrs. Cladys Ada Ukeje (the deceased’s daughter).
Equally important, Cladys had sued the deceased’s wife and son before the Lagos High Court; claiming to be one of the deceased’s children and sought to be included among those to administer their deceased’s father’s estate.
Consequently, in the course of the trial, the court discovered that she was a daughter to the deceased; and qualified to benefit from the estate of their father who died in Lagos in 1981.

Thereafter, the Court of Appeal, Lagos to which Mrs. Lois Ukeje and Enyinnaya Ukeje appealed, upheld the decision of the trial court, prompting them to appeal to the Supreme Court. Specifically, in its judgment, the Supreme Court held that the Court of Appeal, Lagos was right to have voided the Igbo’s native law and custom that disinherit female children.
Meanwhile, Justice Bode Rhodes-Vivour, who read the lead judgment, held that “no matter the circumstances of the birth of a female child; such a child is entitled to an inheritance from her late father’s estate.
“Consequently, the Igbo customary law, which disentitles a female child from partaking in the sharing of her deceased father’s estate is a breach of Section 42(1) and (2) of the Constitution; a fundamental rights provision guaranteed to every Nigerian.
“The said discriminatory customary law is void as it conflicts with Section 42(1) and (2) of the Constitution.
“In the light of all that I have been saying, the appeal is dismissed. In the spirit of reconciliation, parties to bear their own costs,” Justice Rhodes-Vivour said.
Equally important, the landmark ruling is bound to come as succour to many, who have frowned at the age-long practice.

Ababbio: Kano State Chapter of the Muslim Lawyers Association of Nigeria, has lauded the Sharia's Court for sentencing 22-year-old singer, Yahaya Sharif-Aminu to death by hanging for blaspheming against Prophet Muhammad(SAW).
The Nation report that, the singer is a resident of Sharifai quarters in Kano municipal, was sued for “insulting religious creed, contrary to Section 382 (6) of Kano State Shari’a Penal Code Law 2000.”
Sharif-Aminu was said to have sing a song that blaspheme against Prophet Muhammad, which went viral in March 2020. He was however, arraigned before the Sharia court in August, having found guilty, the prisiding Juge Khadi Aliyu Muhammad Kani, ordered that he be hanged until he dies.
In a statement issued the Chairman of the Muslim Lawyers, Muhammad Sani Garba Esq, the lawyer said the judge was right in his judgment in which he convicted and sentenced the accused to death without prejudice because the Supreme Court had set a precedent in the case of Abubakar Shalla Vs State in 2007.
Other supporters of the judgment are Kano State council of Friday mosque Imams and the Kano State Hisbah Board, and have also appealed to the State governor Abdullahi Ganduje to sign the execution of the penalty. MULAN also urged Ganduje to sign the death warrant. The governor has not reacted to the ruling, yet.
The statement reads:
“The position of the Law under Shari’a is that any sane and adult muslim, who insults, defames, or utters words or acts which are capable of bringing into disrepute, odium, contempt of the holy Prophet, such a person has committed a serious crime punishable by death…
“The general public should understand that Shari’a is a Muslim Law applicable only to Muslims. Any person who accepts to be Muslim must obey the provisions of Shari’a, whether it pleases him or not. Those who are not followers of Islamic faith should be reminded that the constitution of Nigeria guarantees Nigerians to practice and observe the religion of their choice and be bound by its Laws and principles…”
“We urge the Executive arm of Kano State government to ensure strict compliance to the Judgement, as part of its commitment towards proper implementation of Sharia.”

Officialgarri: The past days have been filled with horror in Cameroon’s Anglophone regions. As separatist fighters and government forces engage each other in gun battles unabated, civilians remain the worse affected. The trend these past days however has been the killing of civilians.
The latest victim is a lady in Muyuka, South West region, butchered for allegedly acting as a government informant.
In a gruesome video posted on social media, the lady was cut in the neck by separatist fighters after tying her hands behind.
“Hold her led, hold her leg” one of her killers is heard shouting. She was later decapitated and abandoned at the roadside as cars and motorbikes passed by.
Hours after the brutal murder of a mother of four in Muyuka, South West region, another footage has emerged showing the moments that led up to her death. In the video, the 35-year-old was accused of being a “blackleg” by the suspected separatist fighters.
The now late lady is heard explaining that even though she accepted the invite of a military man, she denies feeding the military with information.
“I told them I will not like to go there again … because they had arrested and jailed my brother.”
Quizzed on her reason for meeting with the military man, the lady said[i] “he was asking me out. Though I refused he kept asking me out”.[/i] She is quizzed more, eventually asked if she knows that anyone seen with the military is a “blackleg”.
No separatist group has however claimed responsibility for the act that has met with widespread condemnation.
But in an outing on Wednesday 12th of August, 2020, Agbor Balla’s Centre for Human Rights and Democracy in Africa said she was killed by separatist fighters.
