Nairaland / General / Re: How I Overcame My Stubborn Addiction By Johnspeak Uwangue by emwye(m): 12:12pm On Apr 30, 2020
Managing and overcoming are 2 very different terms. An individual predisposed to certain addictions is more likely to slip into said vice even after several years given the right set of circumstances. This is why I used the term manage instead of overcome. An alcoholic has a sponsor in AA for the reason of being accountable for life. I fail to understand why people refuse to debate with respect for each other (referring to previous replies to my initial posts not directed at you). Have great day!
trapQ:
Anyone can overcome an addiction if they truly strongly desire to put an end to it.

I used to have an addiction, today it is no more. I also know someone who was addicted to taking snuff and couldn't do without it. He has long quit and has not gone back for in about 15 years.

Dude, this statement is completely unnecessary. I cannot understand how you would put down your own kind soo much and expect things to get better for your kids? Please think hard about how your mindset actually is not helping at all. Gosh I’m disappointed.

I've always said African Americans are the biggest disgrace to the black race! They're one of the laziest set of pple you'll ever come across.

They're bunch of narcissistic fools with their sense of entitlement while blaming the whole world for their demise.

I've met and seen some that are doing very fine but the margin is just too wide. I feel bad sharing the same race with them.

I started reading the article thinking it had a lot to offer until I realized it was just another write up largely based on anecdotes and lacks substance. Yet my fellow naija brethren have also been quick to commend the efforts of the writer without offering much needed criticism as to how myopic this mindset is. I agree, we need to come together as the writer concluded but with the attitude and lack of empathy displayed in the write up, I completely understand why you might not get along with African Americans.

Stevecovey:
@op okpa042, the african americans suffered a deep emotional wound. Its still a fresh wound. Their grandparents are still alive who fought evil jim crow & segregation laws with the civil rights movement in the 60's. Those stories are still repeated in their homes.

That generation will have to completely die out and more time pass before a large portion of the population 'forget' & release themselves from the sense of victimhood.

I believe africans should look on that whole situation with compassion and not brash judgement. Its not so easy to overcome a mental conditioning of being inferior & unworthy. Your actions will always follow that thought pattern.

Incest does not do us any favors from a genetic standpoint. Generations of incestuous relationships just perpetuates faulty genes and is kind of the opposite of evolution. There is a reason it’s severely frowned upon.
linda:
When I was born, my father held me in his arms for the first time. I believe his love for me, and my love for him, is the purest, most unconditional love there is. So I say that I met my true love when I was born. In spite of what the religions teach, incest is true love.

Nairaland / General / Re: Please I Need Advice Not Abuse by emwye(m): 2:09pm On Aug 15, 2019
A few questions you should ask yourself:
1. What are my long term career goals ?
2. Is my current job preparing for the goals stated in question 1?
3. How much will Uber fetch monthly relative to my current salary and bills ?
4. Will I be happier driving Uber ?
5. Is the vehicle I drive with Uber mine?
6. Are there other jobs out there requiring the skill set I have acquired over 9 years?
Only after you are able to answer these questions objectively will you be able to make the appropriate decision as it applies to your case.

Good day All,

I joined one of the new generation banks as a support staff for like 9 years now. as it stands now, no room for conversion.

please is it better to go for Uber driving or still remain with the bank. the salary is around 90k per month no other allowances or benefits.

At the risk of sounding like a prick:
1. You don’t overcome an addiction, one simple manages it. The age old adage “once an addict, always an addict” rings true.
2. I believe addiction is a disease that needs treatment and there are a few addictions which stopping cold turkey could actually be fatal.
3. Addicts need a very strong support system, it’s easy to slip into depression otherwise
4. Address the real issue that pushed one into it in the first place. Friends e.t.c
5. When you slip, don’t beat yourself up but be thankful you survived it and learn from your mistakes.

I do not doubt that there is poverty in the land but your claim cannot be established with the data given. If mass transit is considered a cheaper and more convenient means of transportation by the masses, there should be no need to own a vehicle. I paused for a bit and went on wiki(not great but better than nothing) to find out whether or not there was a correlation between car ownership and HDI of a country it appears there is and it agrees with your conclusion. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Car_ownership
MrGerald:
We don't need all these statistics, but in real sense, considering our population, the ratio of one car per six persons is sign of poverty in the country.

of course every man ought to dress well, look neat, keep good hygiene but spending most of your time as a man grooming your hair to look cute like women, rubbing creams to tone your skin like women, going to gym and taking drugs to develop 50 packs is stupidity, if you check well, most successful men around the world (except showbiz guys and entertainers) don't always spend time trying to look hot.

Making money and growing business and company requires time, if u are focused on such, u won't have much time trying to look hot like women, take it or leave it, I know what I am saying
.

These same men that ask "who gym help ?" spend countless hours at beer parlors drinking beer and developing pot bellies. You should invest time in your health if you do not want to spend you later years in bad shape. 6 Packs are developed in the kitchen and the refusing to spend time to look after yourself is folly.

Also please don't discourage Nigerian men from engaging in physical activity (a.k.a - going to the gym). You would be amazed that most of the very successful people you probably know wake up very early to use the gym.

This game frustrated me. I downloaded the demo and tried to beat the muscular ninja countless times until I figured it wasn’t worth my time to restart the game every friggin time I lost. This and fight night (story mode) are probably the most difficult games I’ve ever played till date.

mikeyjaydy:

It took me over a month to finish this game back then around 2006, I must admit it's still one of the hardest adventure game I played. Ninja Gaiden 1& 2 was only release on xbox and xbox360, part 3 was the only one released on PS3. Players enjoyed it better on Xbox360 back then because of better graphics and higher fps. I only finished part 1 and 2 but couldn't play part 3 because of region lock on my console (NTSC/PAL clashes).
My hardest adventure I couldn't finish and I never heard of anyone finishing it was SOUL REAVER. That game was hard asf. Even an older companion I looked up to who was also a master on playing adventures ended up abandoning it after 3 months play on PS1.

I think you might be mistaken. $3500 after tax and other deductions on a biweekly basis leaves the individual at an annual salary upwards of $120K per annum. I do not know any vocational nurses that make that much with the exception of Nurse practitioners that live in HCOL areas like LA, Chicago, NY and the Tristate area. Could you please enlighten me ?

Thanks

Not great. A licensed vocational nurse who has no academic degree except for their certification makes more than that working just 12 hours a day for 2 weeks. Excluding weekends.

Corporate giants are very good at mitigating those risks. You basically sign over your rights in the form of an NDA.

CodeTemplar:
Yes there are people who carry this much potential. Do you drink Milo ( popular cocoa beverage instant drink ) ?
If you do next time look at the sachet well there is a special malt formula called "Protomalt" that is largely responsible for the unique properties of Milo and this formulae is worth billions of dollars to them because it virtually controls their market share and revenue from Milo.
Now if you, Hedonini happen to be biochemist researcher and you come up with a formula as good as that of the Milo's Protomalt, will you attempt to go into cocoa beverage production as a solopreneuer with next to no capital and market brand reputation OR you will take a 10 million usd per month contract job with Cadbury (Nestle Milo's Rival ) for the next 5 years ? Will you be tempted to even think about this kind of opportunity if it presents itself to you?

Please be honest in your answers.

Business / Re: NNPC Signs Agreement With Shell, Seplat, Oando, Others To Implement $3.7bn Gas by emwye(m): 7:17pm On Jul 20, 2018
I agree with you on the following points :
- welcoming competition from able investors
- dissolving the monopolies that currently exist
I however do no agree that my fears are unfounded in the sense that we as a people constantly look to foreign investors for compettition. Sure it will solve the problem short term but at what point do we put ourselves first? We can definitely agree to disagree.

davidif:

Wrong! It's unfounded fears like this that consistently allows lawmakers to keep making bad decisions when it comes to privatizing. They keep selling the same assets to the same elites all because of the fear of outsiders. Why not open the door for more players and competitors instead of constantly creating monopolies that make things worse for the consumer or citizens in this case.
I welcome competition especially from ethical investors who don't have lawsuits or pending investigations against them over corrupt local elites.

Fair enough - Pure thievery. Your solution however leaves room for us to be raped yet again. That's a colonialist mindset which we should endeavor to eradicate. Only we can help ourselves.

davidif:

Just a case of mismanagement? Are you kidding me?? How about pure thievery? That would be the start of the mess that is the Nigerian Govts involvement in oil and gas. I will prefer our oil business to be in the hands of foreign profit driven capitalist who know how to maximize efficiency and eliminate waste than a pathetic govt that has proven time and again that it does not know how to put the right people in the place to get the job done.

Gerrard,
I tire for our people oh. That was a difficult write up to read.
1. The guy is supposed to be a graduate of some tertiary institution of learning where the language of instruction was most likely English.
2. He has 2 cars now. Wow! Thats hella successful isn't it?
3. The girl had 3 abortions. At what point did he realize he wasn't supposed to be having sex if he couldn't keep her from getting pregnant?

Everything about this epistle reeks of mediocrity and ignorance; Sad thing is, he is delusional enough to think its a great story to inspire people.

Idrismusty97:
Nothing inspiring or special about your long àss epistle, In fact it's all the more reason to stay away from women until you are financially stable. What is this bullcrap i am reading? And just because you became rich as you claim at the end it doesn't mean shît. Just a case of mismanagement. Equinor (formerly Statoil) was mostly owned by the Norwegian government. So is ARAMCO. We just dont know how to hold people accountable. They will only sell it to themselves and screw things up even further.

davidif:

Sell them off. Every last one of them. The govt has no business getting involved in the oil business in the first place. Their job should be to create a stable environment for businesses to thrive in not to be getting involved in ventures that they don't have expertise in. Its about time that you Nigerians learnt that what is good for the state is not necessarily whats good for the Nigerian people.

The state has grown too big and needs to be cut down. Like the saying goes, "pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered." The state has grown so fat while stifling the creativity and entrepreneurial spirit of the people and therefore needs to be starved or cut down to size. In other words, the state doesn't need more revenue what it needs is a diet.

Abdullahi said he remembered Nigeria when he saw the cars waiting at the traffic.
