Na wa oh, see as peope just scatter this Rachael. Make the money na make we see as you spend am. Shiooo!!!
Look, everything in life is relative. The more you make, the more you spend. The same people making noise that they would do wonders with the 1m a month are either not being honest with themselves or disciplined beyond what i see in the life of the average nigerian. Spare me the bullcrap, our lifestyle, culture and general perception of issues is not one that shows financial discipline. Think about it, weddings, funerals, random people asking for money just because they can ask. What about the way the rich flaunt the wealth in the presence of the poor. Look at our infrastructure - how does that demonstrate how disciplined we are. Look at the average student - learning just for what the certificate would do. My rant is not about Rachael but about the nitwits that come online an talk nonsense about discipline which the society at large lacks. PLEASE LOOK INWARD AND SHUT THE HELL UP!

OP,
Congrats.

They do this as lots of people in engineering start a PhD and do not finish it because they either get tired, bored or just plain sick of lab work while their counterparts are "making money". This leaves the professor in a jam as they have to then look for other people to fill your spot. Now, its up to you to take the position and look after your best interest as well. Do not be afraid to do it as you will still take the required course work for the masters degree anyways. My recommendation however is when the time comes, you are clear on your intentions. She might be a pain to work with (trust me, i know). Lose all that passive-aggressive-Nigerian-respect-your-boss-like-your-parents-B.S and always be straight forward and i think you'll be fine.

What do you have to lose anyway?
CultureLife Expectancy- Why Are We As A Nation At The Bottom Of The Charts by emwye(op): 7:24pm On Apr 14, 2016
I was chatting with a colleague of mine about the time when Colombia was overrun with violence and wondered how the population survived through it all (she lived in Colombia at the time when Pablo Escobar ran amok in the region). We then broached the issue of life expectancy and i then realized they had at least 25 years on us in Nigeria. The thing worry me sotay i checked and found out that sub Saharan Africa lagged behind everyone else. What is responsible for this?

If we are already dying this early, we might as well add a cause to it shey (mba, na we no wan die - me sef join no wan die?)

Please give your well researched reasons- I think we the people would be able to give better answers than most journals written by folks just trying to get their PhD's and research papers.

Uhm, I'm not here to take sides on either major but to correct this claim so others might not get get the wrong idea. The box you speak of really does not exist for engineers per se. They usually want to do other "not-so-cool" things like working with start-ups, automotive, space and energy (alternative or otherwise). Wall street actually likes engineers and i know many that eventually get bored and want to make more money by working for wall street. The skill set that wall street desires is present in both majors. You're opinion is a tad bit biased.
ChinonsoDike2:
Since you don't want to limit yourself to Nigeria, I can give you some advice. I studied Applied Math in college(good ol USA). I finished with a 3.7/4 GPA. I'm currently doing an off-cycle internship at Morgan Stanley. It involves doing quantitative work, modelling, liaising with the investment traders. In the US you can choose any major, so why did I choose Applied Math? First of all, I love math; it's fun, enjoyable stuff. You work on interesting, real world problems; engineering also does that, but I enjoy non-engineering, financial problems. I chose the applied form because my goal has always been to work in industry. Mech.eng forces you into a box; you have to be in the engineering sector; you can't do cool jobs at wall street. The work seems droll and boring. You do monotonous work while you climb up the corporate ladder. Engineering also has its pros, so do a lot of research on this. Regardless of major, learn how to program. Pick up C++ and Matlab, and you're golden.

Goodluck.

As much as possible please avoid burning these polymers. I doubt you can apply the required amount of heat energy to disintegrate it completely and congrats, not only have you not solved the problem, you have also managed to add some more green house gases and carcinogens to our dear planet. Recycling remains a way to go in this case and in the absence of that just toss it. Don't go around starting fires. One day, i'm pretty sure some sharp corporation will capitalize on the vast plastic wastes in the ocean and start mining it for resources. Who would have thought all those dead dinosaurs and ancestors would be liquefied and sold for 39 dollars a barrel. Hehe, to think those dead dinosaurs and people are what we recycled to cause this problem again!

It is bad for the air but at least I am consoled it will spread cancer to humanity so that the world will heal.
AgricultureRe: Bush Dog Killed In Our Fish Farm This Morning by emwye(m): 11:31pm On Dec 30, 2015
Sir,a quick search on google and you'll see that said animal is classified under "least concern". This implies that the animal is not endangered at all. Look i get the push for conservation completely! but if that animal was there to take their fishes then it got what was coming. If it wasn't then i guess the folks just wanted something gamey to eat. You guys need to chill out, are there hunting licenses or government specified animal hunting seasons at the moment? If there are none, this implies that the people in charge of conservation are not doing the job they should do OR people have much bigger priorities.

I think everyone making noise about the fact that we kill animals anyhow in nigeria should keep understand how conservation works and what the government has to do to enforce laws in favor of the ecosystem. Bear in mind that if i shoot and kill coyotes here and present the ears to the appropriate authorities, i would be given a certain amount of money per pair (not sure if that's still in force but i am sure you get the idea).

UyaiHarley:
Dear OP, that animal is an endangered specie. Please if you happen to find another alive, locate any animal conservation office around you; who knows you could get a fat envelope in return. Now, don't quote me on that. Lol. Attached is a picture of the prized animal at the Owerri zoo when i visited on November 29, 2015. Picture is a little foggy.

what is this one saying? huh
Well, "this one" is simply amazed about the fact that entitlements are to be paid upon resignation (not layoff/redundancy). I was just curious sir. The crazy term in my comment wasn't for you but the HR policy that allows that so you do not have to get all defensive. Perhaps you were referring to your retirement contributions which SHOULD be given to you and my advice is to fight to get it except you agreed to terms and conditions stating otherwise.

P.S - i'd rather not be referred to as "this one" in future posts but hey, its just a preference of mine.

Hello peeps, I just wanted to share a Little bit of what my experience has been so far.

I was based in Abj for a while and stayed there for about 5yrs until I got tired and frustrated with my job and resigned last year. I was supposed to get paid my final entitlements which was a large chunk of money unfortunately till now as i speak the company didnt pay. My plan was to use the the proceeds from my final entitlement to start up my own biz Then I came back to lag, started hustling again, had to move back to family house and live with my parents again..its was really rough .till this year when I was lucky to get another job here in Lagos.. I can't lie the job has been ok, very close to my house and we are not really busy so I just they chill and collect my pay.

But my problem is I still miss Abj like mad, compared to Lagos wahala,I miss my privacy as a bachelor..Am so confused I feel like going back to Abj and starting all over again cos so far living with my parents after being alone for a long while has been hell..I also want to start a Lil biz of my own and I feel it will do well in Abj..As I speak I have been offered another job again by the grace of God and am thankful to God for it all, because e no easy to get job for this naija..but am still confused, am not happy probably because by now my plan was to be a bizman,am not happy living with my parents and I have to move out ASAP...I just don't know what to do am confused and I don't want to make another mistake.

Please I would appreciate wise and matured comments only

Morning VO,
I think i have to properly explain the situation

Starting out at my company, i worked with my Optional Practical Training (OPT) for about 14 months before my H1b was applied for. They applied for that in April of 2013, it got approved that month, however the H1-b status did not kick in until October of 2013. That period between when i was approved and could start using the H1-b is called the cap gap extension. In that period you can work but are advised against leaving the country since there's no valid visa on your passport. Now, i'm trying to find out if the same applies since my Visa (not status) expires in December 2015 and my Status expires in March 2016. My status will be renewed again in April of 2016. Will i still not be able to leave the country until October 2016 when i get a visa from an embassy outside the US. I ask because technically there's no Cap Gap extension in this case as OPT does not apply. I'm hoping this is not the case as I'd rather not be stuck.

I hope this is a better explanation.

Haha!
Reminds me of back in '08. Resumed at a job with an indigenous oil company on what we called Zenith road in V.I. Full of excitement that i finally got a job i thought i'd like. The usual on the job daily on-boarding. I even had to take passport photographs (750 for 4 copies in V.I at the time). They had set up my email address and salary account process.
HR- "Yeah, can we have copies of your credentials ?"
Me- "Sure, here you go".
HR- "uhm, you're missing one, your NYSC certificate"
Me- "I'm currently serving, should be done in 5 months, didn't think it was a big deal"
HR- "were you interviewed?
Me -for my mind "duh!"

Long and short, i never got that job again. They took the offer letter from me and replaced it with a rescission of offer letter. 2.4m p.a ( i was devastated). Story of my life my but i can laugh about it today.

Was in there for barely 4 hours. cheesy

This is a pretty interesting thread to read up on. Why are you both wasting your time?

Does Alexis really think he can intelligently convince Agentofallah (or anyone for that matter) to believe intelligent design?

Does Agentofallah really think he can convince Alexis and discredit what his existence revolves around?

I answer this with a resounding NO! You guys need to chill for a minute.

In my opinion, Agentofallah makes a hell of an argument in support of Evolution and Science.

Alexis, you should do more research and not resort to name calling when arguing along these lines, its just not an intelligent way to go.

Agentofallah, i dont think it looks good on you when you exchange insults - keep it classy like you've tried too - no doubt you are a scholar and a gentleman.

My views - i believe in evolution because i haven't found scientific reason not to. Religion helps me maintain my sanity at the vanity that is life.

I'm sick of seeing things like this. I know naija is very hard for many of US that were either not born into wealthy homes and/or do not have the unique skillset/abilities it takes to make in Nigeria (cutthroat, ruthless, extreme intelligence bordering on ingenuity, friggin luck e.t.c.), trust me, I KNOW! shocked shocked shocked shocked :oI find this hilarious and pretty insane. A classic case of money miss road.

You increase your chances of crashing EXPONENTIALLY by increasing the duration of your travel, the number of times you take off and land and the number of people who have control of your life at any given moment (pilots, air traffic controllers, jihadists e.t.c.). Who says you can't crash from Lagos to London ? How do you know that you won't get in a car crash on your way home after that ridiculous waste of time and resources? Look people, when its your time its your time. Stop this b.s practice if it truly does exist.

Great job so far! I'm currently on my 1st H1-B visa which will be expiring in 2016. My employer recently gave the lawyers the go ahead to commence the green card application but then halted it by giving me the reason i paraphrase below
"in light of the current downturn in the industry, we would find it difficult to prove that we cannot fill your spot with a qualified American".
I'm not very sure that's valid excuse but my knowledge on such matters is limited. Could you please shed some light on this issue if you can. Thanks.

Look folks, let the only ones that believe such things be the ones that SAW the BIRD transform.

How is that my problem that he is elected? I am no fan of any Nigeria politician, I do not care about people who have no political aim, it is the uneducated lot in his constituency who elected him and the INEC and judiciary who allow him to contest a political position that should be answering that. Majority of the politicians irrespective of their academic achievements lack political conviction, how do anyone succeed politically without a political identity?

What I am about is the uninformed trolls shouting extradite him, I could not careless where he'd end up, I do care about respecting our nation and treating us on the same footing as any other respectable country. Would US extradite John Mccain to Nigeria if he was accused of drug offences? Absurdity.
You've made proper points defending your statement. The system that put him in power is the real issue - valid. However, that very image of a "respectable country" you want cannot be granted to the system (his constituency, INEC and the ones that condone corruption) which you have no regards for.

With that said, will John McCain be extradited to Nigeria ? I doubt it, would he be extradited to Isreal, UK, Canada? Hmm... its plausible.

I do not know the man kashamu or anything about him, but a senator-elect, the US is requesting his extradition, have you asked yourself, would the US ever extradite their own senator-elect to face criminal trial in another sovereign state? Shame most of you have lost any sense of patriotism and identity.
Sorry Bruh but that logic makes no sense whatsoever. Check current events and history, Known criminals in the US cannot run for office without some extreme cover up taking place. Politicians get locked up all the time in the US for seemingly monor offences (look up illinois governors). Following your logic, if we had an American facing drug charges in say the UK who came back here to run for office; upon public knowledge of his crimes, that guy would be under fire and depending on the bilateral relationship between both countries, he could be extradited and disgraced.

You might want to define what patriotism means in your books because condoning flagrant disregard for the rule of law isn't it.

There are some things i never thought i'd spend money on which i do now without giving much thought to. I guess it's a matter of perspective.
