✝️TOPIC: THE DANGERS OF CORRUPTION



✝️📖TEXT: 1 Samuel 2: 12-21(NKJV)
2:12. Now the sons of Eli [were] corrupt; they did not know the LORD.
2:13. And the priests' custom with the people [was that] when any man offered a sacrifice, the priest's servant would come with a three-pronged fleshhook in his hand while the meat was boiling.
2:14. Then he would thrust [it] into the pan, or kettle, or caldron, or pot; and the priest would take for himself all that the fleshhook brought up. So they did in Shiloh to all the Israelites who came there.
2:15. Also, before they burned the fat, the priest's servant would come and say to the man who sacrificed, "Give meat for roasting to the priest, for he will not take boiled meat from you, but raw."
2:16. And [if] the man said to him, "They should really burn the fat first; [then] you may take [as much] as your heart desires," he would then answer him, "[No,] but you must give [it] now; and if not, I will take [it] by force."
2:17. Therefore the sin of the young men was very great before the LORD, for men abhorred the offering of the LORD.
2:18. But Samuel ministered before the LORD, [even as] a child, wearing a linen ephod.
2:19. Moreover his mother used to make him a little robe, and bring [it] to him year by year when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice.
2:20. And Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, and say, "The LORD give you descendants from this woman for the loan that was given to the LORD." Then they would go to their own home.
2:21. And the LORD visited Hannah, so that she conceived and bore three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile the child Samuel grew before the LORD.

✝️📜 STUDY: The two sons of Eli were corrupt priests who sinned in the priest's custom concerning offered sacrifices. Instead of using the three-pronged fleshhook as was the custom, their servant ordered the man who sacrificed to give him raw meat for the priests. If the man failed to obey, the servant would threaten to collect the meat by force. This attitude made men to abhor the Lord's offering. The child Samuel, however, ministered faithfully to the Lord and got a new robe annually from his mother. Eli's blessing on Elkanah and Hannah was answered by God who gave Hannah three sons and two daughters. Corruption has bedeviled many nations including Nigeria where people steal, kill and kidnap with impunity. Corruption exists in our institutions, including the church. Servants of corrupt leaders are also corrupt. People are disillusioned with the church when they see corruption there and this could make them stop attending Church. Are you part of the corruption in the Church or in the nation? Do you embezzle the money entrusted to your care? Remember that God sees you and will hold you to account. Repent today and turn to Christ and He will set you free (John 8: 36). Shun corruption!

2:2. "No one is holy like the LORD, For [there is] none besides You, Nor [is there] any rock like our God.
2:3. "Talk no more so very proudly; Let no arrogance come from your mouth, For the LORD [is] the God of knowledge; And by Him actions are weighed.
2:4. "The bows of the mighty men [are] broken, And those who stumbled are girded with strength.
2:5. [Those who were] full have hired themselves out for bread, And the hungry have ceased [to hunger.] Even the barren has borne seven, And she who has many children has become feeble.
2:6. "The LORD kills and makes alive; He brings down to the grave and brings up.

2:11. Then Elkanah went to his house at Ramah. But the child ministered to the LORD before Eli the priest.

*MESSAGE:*

Hannah's prayer is more of a compilation of her joy, the holiness and greatness of God, and some mighty acts of the Lord. She rejoiced because God had put a smile on her face. Hannah declared that God is the only holy One and a God of knowledge. He changes the condition of the hungry and the barren. God is sovereign and can promote or demote anyone. God defeats His adversaries, strengthens His king and exalts His anointed. At the end of her prayer, Elkanah with his wife returned to Ramah while Samuel ministered to the Lord at Shiloh.

After God gave Hannah a son, she magnified the Lord in her prayer when she went to fulfil her vow concerning Samuel. Prayer is a good way to communicate with God. It is very important to thank and magnify the Lord for his goodness and mercies. We can do so by singing songs of praise to God, testifying about what God has done in our lives and exalting the name of the Lord for his mighty deeds. Tell someone what the Lord has done for you last week. You can sing a song of praise today.

*TEXT:* 1 SAMUEL 1: 19-28 *(NKJV)*

1:19. Then they rose early in the morning and worshiped before the LORD, and returned and came to their house at Ramah. And Elkanah knew Hannah his wife, and the LORD remembered her.
1:20. So it came to pass in the process of time that Hannah conceived and bore a son, and called his name Samuel, [saying,] "Because I have asked for him from the LORD."
1:21. Now the man Elkanah and all his house went up to offer to the LORD the yearly sacrifice and his vow.
1:22. But Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband, "[Not] until the child is weaned; then I will take him, that he may appear before the LORD and remain there forever."
1:23. And Elkanah her husband said to her, "Do what seems best to you; wait until you have weaned him. Only let the LORD establish His word." So the woman stayed and nursed her son until she had weaned him.
1:24. Now when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bulls, one ephah of flour, and a skin of wine, and brought him to the house of the LORD in Shiloh. And the child [was] young.
1:25. Then they slaughtered a bull, and brought the child to Eli.
1:26. And she said, "O my lord! As your soul lives, my lord, I [am] the woman who stood by you here, praying to the LORD.
1:27. "For this child I prayed, and the LORD has granted me my petition which I asked of Him.
1:28. "Therefore I also have lent him to the LORD; as long as he lives he shall be lent to the LORD." So they worshiped the LORD there.

*MESSAGE:*

After the trip to the temple at Shiloh, God answered Hannah's prayer - she became pregnant-and later was delivered of a baby boy whom she named Samuel. That year Elkanah and his family went to Shiloh without Hannah who was nursing the child. After the child was weaned, Hannah and Samuel accompanied the family to worship and sacrifice at Shiloh where she handed over Samuel to Eli in fulfilment of her vow. Some people make vows to God and do not fulfil them. Such behaviour is ungodly for the Bible tells us not to delay in paying our vows, asit is better not to vow than to vow and not pay (Eccl. 5: 4-5).

What did you vow to God that you have not paid? Some Church members make pledges in the Church which they never pay. This is sin! Have you borrowed money or something that you have not returned as you vowed? Is there a promise you made to your husband, wife, child, customer, business partner or friend that you have not fulfilled? Be a faithful and trustworthy Christian and fulfil your vows to God and neighbours. Then God will bless you.

1. Now there was a certain man of Ramathaim Zophim, of the mountains of Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite.
2. And he had two wives: the name of one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.
3. This man went up from his city yearly to worship and sacrifice to the Lord of hosts in Shiloh. Also the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, the priests of the Lord, were there.
4. And whenever the time came for Elkanah to make an offering, he would give portions to Peninnah his wife and to all her sons and daughters.
5. But to Hannah he would give a double portion, for he loved Hannah, although the Lord had closed her womb.
6. And her rival also provoked her severely, to make her miserable, because the Lord had closed her womb.
7. So it was, year by year, when she went up to the house of the Lord, that she provoked her; therefore she wept and did not eat.
8. Then Elkanah her husband said to her, “Hannah, why do you weep? Why do you not eat? And why is your heart grieved? Am I not better to you than ten sons?”
9. So Hannah arose after they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat by the doorpost of the tabernacle of the Lord.
10. And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed to the Lord and wept in anguish.
11. Then she made a vow and said, “O Lord of hosts, if You will indeed look on the affliction of Your maidservant and remember me, and not forget Your maidservant, but will give Your maidservant a male child, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and no razor shall come upon his head.”
12. And it happened, as she continued praying before the Lord, that Eli watched her mouth.
13. Now Hannah spoke in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard. Therefore Eli thought she was drunk.
14. So Eli said to her, “How long will you be drunk? Put your wine away from you!”
15. But Hannah answered and said, “No, my lord, I am a woman of sorrowful spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor intoxicating drink, but have poured out my soul before the Lord.
16. Do not consider your maidservant a wicked[e] woman, for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief I have spoken until now.”
17. Then Eli answered and said, “Go in peace, and the God of Israel grant your petition which you have asked of Him.”
18. And she said, “Let your maidservant find favor in your sight.” So the woman went her way and ate, and her face was no longer sad.

*MESSAGE:*

Hannah was one of the two wives of Elkanah. Although her husband loved her, she was not happy in the marriage because she was barren. Her rival, Peninnah, who had children occasionally provoked her because of her barrenness. Whenever Elkanah's family went to Shiloh to worship and sacrifice, Hannah would be sad and weep because of Peninnah's provocations. At one occasion in Shiloh, Hannah prayed intensely and vowed that if God would remember her and give her a son, she would give back the child to Him. Eli, the Priest, who thought she was drunken did caution her; but later told her to go in peace for God would answer her.

Are you under attack in your marriage or family? Is your husband or wife making life difficult for you? Do not engage in strife or quarrel. Christians should not engage in anger, malice or filthy language (Col. 3: . Rather put on love and allow the peace of God to rule in our hearts (Col. 3: 14-15). Do you provoke people by your words and actions? You must repent! When provoked, you should take it to God in prayer and you will leave His presence joyfully to go in peace.

✝️📖TEXT: Genesis 50: 15-26(NKJV)
50:15. When Joseph's brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, "Perhaps Joseph will hate us, and may actually repay us for all the evil which we did to him."
50:16. So they sent [messengers] to Joseph, saying, "Before your father died he commanded, saying,
50:17. 'Thus you shall say to Joseph: "I beg you, please forgive the trespass of your brothers and their sin; for they did evil to you." ' Now, please, forgive the trespass of the servants of the God of your father." And Joseph wept when they spoke to him.
50:18. Then his brothers also went and fell down before his face, and they said, "Behold, we [are] your servants."
50:19. Joseph said to them, "Do not be afraid, for [am] I in the place of God?
50:20. "But as for you, you meant evil against me; [but] God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as [it is] this day, to save many people alive.
50:21. "Now therefore, do not be afraid; I will provide for you and your little ones." And he comforted them and spoke kindly to them.
50:22. So Joseph dwelt in Egypt, he and his father's household. And Joseph lived one hundred and ten years.
50:23. Joseph saw Ephraim's children to the third [generation.] The children of Machir, the son of Manasseh, were also brought up on Joseph's knees.
50:24. And Joseph said to his brethren, "I am dying; but God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land to the land of which He swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob."
50:25. Then Joseph took an oath from the children of Israel, saying, "God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones from here."
50:26. So Joseph died, [being] one hundred and ten years old; and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.

✝️📜 STUDY: Joseph's enslavement to Egypt by his brothers was an event no one could easily forget. When Jacob died, Joseph's brothers felt that he would repay them evil for evil. They took steps in verses 16 to 18 to handle their fears. From verse 17 and 21, why do you think Joseph wept, and also comforted and reassured them of his continued support? Joseph had the fear of God, and knew that “all things work together for good to them that love God”(Gen. 39: 9; 42: 18; Rom. 8: 28). God used the evil plans of his brothers to work out good for the entire family. Joseph lived to a good old age of 110. He died in hope that God would visit His people and return them to Canaan. He therefore requested them to carry his bones with them, which they did some 400 years later (vv.24-25;Josh. 24: 32). Have you suffered any harm or ill-treatment from someone you had expected better things from? Do not repay evil for evil, but believe God to turn things around for your good. Keep your fire keep burning, and your zeal strong till the end (Rom. 5: 5;12: 11).

*TEXT:* GENESIS 50: 1-14 *(NKJV)*

50:1. Then Joseph fell on his father's face, and wept over him, and kissed him.
50:2. And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father. So the physicians embalmed Israel.
50:3. Forty days were required for him, for such are the days required for those who are embalmed; and the Egyptians mourned for him seventy days.
50:4. And when the days of his mourning were past, Joseph spoke to the household of Pharaoh, saying, "If now I have found favor in your eyes, please speak in the hearing of Pharaoh, saying,
50:5. 'My father made me swear, saying, "Behold, I am dying; in my grave which I dug for myself in the land of Canaan, there you shall bury me." Now therefore, please let me go up and bury my father, and I will come back.' "
50:6. And Pharaoh said, "Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear."
50:7. So Joseph went up to bury his father; and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt,
50:8. as well as all the house of Joseph, his brothers, and his father's house. Only their little ones, their flocks, and their herds they left in the land of Goshen.
50:9. And there went up with him both chariots and horsemen, and it was a very great gathering.
50:10. Then they came to the threshing floor of Atad, which [is] beyond the Jordan, and they mourned there with a great and very solemn lamentation. He observed seven days of mourning for his father.
50:11. And when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, "This [is] a deep mourning of the Egyptians." Therefore its name was called Abel Mizraim, which [is] beyond the Jordan.
50:12. So his sons did for him just as he had commanded them.
50:13. For his sons carried him to the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, before Mamre, which Abraham bought with the field from Ephron the Hittite as property for a burial place.
50:14. And after he had buried his father, Joseph returned to Egypt, he and his brothers and all who went up with him to bury his father.

*MESSAGE:*

Several years before my father died, he showed us his burial site, and we buried him there when the time came. In the same way, Joseph fulfilled his promise to Jacob to bury him in the ancestral burial ground (Gen. 47: 29-31). Joseph was careful to bury Jacob in the specific site in Canaan (vv. 12-13). If it does not contravene the word of God, the laws of the state, and is not beyond our ability, we could grant such requests to our parents and loved ones. Jacob's burial was actually a state event with an international flavour (vv.7-9). The mourning lasted for 70 days in Egypt, plus another 7days in Canaan (vv. 3, 10).

If any burial custom in your community is unbiblical, seek divine wisdom to abolish it. How we mourn for or bury the dead does not affect the person's eternal state. We should therefore heed the instruction in 1 Thessalonians 4: 13 not to mourn as those who have no hope. Each person will die just once, and after that the judgement (Heb. 9: 27). Let us therefore live in such a way that we can say with Paul, “For me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain" (Phil. 1: 21).
