The APC National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, has backed the deployment of military for the forthcoming governorship election in Ekiti State. Oshiomhole spoke with journalists after a closed-door meeting with British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Paul Arkwright in Abuja. He said that people should not dictate the number of police personnel to be deployed for the governorship poll to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) in order to secure lives and property. The former labour leader, who voiced APC's commitment to free and fair election in Ekiti, said the presence of adequate security personnel was necessary to the "rigging machine” serviced by criminals. He said, "Whether they should use the military or not, I don’t think you want to argue that. Over the years since 1999, 2003, the Armed Forces have always been deployed; don’t forget, when I was in Edo State, I told people that I want the armed forces to be involved in the election because the rigging machine is serviced by criminals who are hardened and who are often hired. Now if you have criminals wielding AK 47 on an election day, and the police is overwhelmed, you want to say the army should not be deployed? We shouldn’t worry about who we deploy, I think we should all pray that however people are deployed, in the end, we are not counting dead bodies. “My experience in Edo is that you will hear stories like this, so, so people deployed....I have seen that in Edo. The important thing is that regardless of what the police chooses to do, regardless of the number they choose to deploy, let us ensure that those who are going to vote are safe and that the votes cast are secure, whatever number they need to secure the lives of those who are going to vote to create that sense of security for people to move freely to vote for candidates of their choice, I don’t think we should dictate to IGP how many people he wants to deploy." The APC national chairman thanked the British government for their support in promoting democracy in Nigeria and promised free and fair process in Ekiti “For the process is more important than the outcome because we are looking at the Nigeria project in terms of sustaining democracy not the survival of a particular political aspirant whether it is on my party platform or in the platform of the opposition,” he said. While speaking, the British High Commissioner, Mr. Arkwright said his country intended to send observers to Ekiti State to ensure credible poll because of interest in Nigeria’s democracy. “The British High Commission will be sending a team there to observe the election and to ensure that they go smoothly, to ensure that INEC can do its job, that the security forces do their job and basically to ensure that the people of Ekiti State are allowed to freely express their opinion, to vote along with their conscience and to be able to do so in peaceful manner,” Arkwright said. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/ekiti-governorship-oshiomhole-backs-deployment-of-military-260140.html

Come Saturday, the people of Ekiti State will go to the poll to elect their next governor. The election will not just be a test of credibility for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) whose chairman, Professor Mahmud Yakubu, is being accused of bias by the opposition, it will also reveal the level of preparedness of the commission for the 2019 general election. It is therefore in the interest of all the critical stakeholders to ensure that the exercise is free, fair and credible. If the process leading to the emergence of the candidates of both the All Progressives Congress (APC) which controls the centre and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ruling the state were any guide, nothing should be left to chance in the election. First, the APC governorship primary presided over by Governor Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa State was suddenly called off following an outbreak of violence despite a deployment of numerous security forces to the venue of the election in Ado Ekiti. It took a repeat exercise for the then Minister of Mines and Steel Development, a former governor of the state, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, to emerge as winner. The exercise leading to the emergence of the PDP candidate was no less acrimonious. With Governor Ayo Fayose as the campaign manager for his deputy, Prof Kolapo Olusola Eleka whom he wants as his successor, it was no surprise that the outcome was rejected by some of the aspirants, notably a former Minister of State for Works, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, who eventually dumped the party to team up with the opposition in the state. There are of course other parties in the race but it is safe to bet that the contest will be a straight fight between Fayemi of APC and Olusola of PDP. Meanwhile, there are concerns that powerful forces in both Abuja and Ado Ekiti with interests in the election might compromise the process to influence its outcome. This underscores the reason the election has been described as a test of credibility for INEC and the current administration. We therefore call on the commission to ensure that sophisticated arrangements meant to guarantee effective logistics for the poll are put in place. It is noteworthy that this election is taking place in one of the smallest states of the country with only 16 local governments. Therefore, any report of late arrival of electoral materials and non-functionality of electoral devices could be viewed as a mark of failure and incompetence while question marks would be raised about the capacity of INEC to conduct the 2019 general election. However, we reiterate our usual caution that election is a process and not an event. To that extent, the role of the security agencies before, during and after the exercise is very critical. We call on President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure that state power is not deployed for partisan purposes. Even when his party has a stake in this election, it is important for him to remember that he is the president of the country and not just a party man. We also urge Governor Fayose to restrain himself from all impulses to self-help or incitement to violence. He should allow the people of Ekiti State to determine who rules them after him in an atmosphere of peace. We call on the Inspector-General of Police, the Commandant of the National Security and Civil Defence Corps and heads of other security agencies that will be involved in the election to educate and warn their men against compromising their professional responsibilities. They must provide only strict security services meant to enhance the successful conduct of the poll and should eschew any partial acts that could cast doubts on the credibility of the election. At the end of the day, the people of Ekiti State reserve the right to elect the candidate they deem most fit to govern them for the next four years. Anxiety, tension and fears have enveloped Ekiti State as the people prepare to elect a new governor on Saturday. The candidates, in a bid to win the votes of eligible voters, have resorted to mudslinging, frivolous claims and allegations laced with suspicions and speculations. The most culpable among the political parties involved in the politics of blackmail, are the APC and the PDP. The two parties are arguably the leading contenders for the state coveted seat. The election, on one hand, revolves around the incumbent Governor Ayodele Fayose of the PDP, who is seeking to install his deputy, Prof. Kolapo Olusola, and his main challenger, the immediate past governor of the state and until last month, the Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi. Fayemi, who is seeking a return to office, lost the 2014 governorship election to Fayose against bookmakers’ predictions. Up till today, there are arguments by members of the APC that Fayemi lost the election in questionable circumstances. Other political parties that are participating in the election and their candidates are Mega Party of Nigeria, Adebisi Omoyeni; Peoples Party of Nigeria, Amb. Dare Bejide; Labour Party, Dr Sikiru Lawal; Abundant Nigeria Renewal Party, Rev. Tunde Afe; and Accord, Abiodun Aluko. There are also for the Social Democratic Party, Akinloye Ayegbusi; Advanced Congress of Democrats, Senator Bode Olowoporoku; All Grassroot Alliance, Lucas Orubuloye; Action Democratic Party, Otunba Segun Adewale, and All Grand Alliance Party, Stephen Oribamise. Others are African Peoples Alliance, Malam Jimoh Saheed; Advanced Peoples Democratic Alliance, Tope Adebayo; All Progressives Grand Alliance, Amb Ayodeji Ayodele; Better Nigeria Peoples Party, Prince Adegboye Ajayi; Democratic Alternative, Ayodele Adesua; Democratic Peoples Congress, Olalekan Olanrewaju; Democratic Peoples Party, Yinka Akerele; Freedom and Justice Party, Sule Ganiyu; and Green Party of Nigeria, Adewale Akinyele. They also include Independent Democrats, Tosin Ajibare; Kowa Party, Tope Amuda; Labour Party, Temitope Amuda; Masses Movement of Nigeria, Olabode Jegede; National Democratic Liberty Party, Babatunde Alegbeleye; Nigeria Peoples Congress, Dr Oladosu Olaniyi; Peoples for Democratic Change, Dada Olayinka; and Progressive Peoples Alliance, Goke Animasahun. The rest are Action Alliance, Shola Omolola; United Democratic Party, Dr Olusegun Adeleye; Unity Party of Nigeria, Gboyega Jacob; Young Democratic Party, Fakorede Ayodeji; and Young Progressive Party, Temitope Omotayo. Fayose recently accused the APC and the Independent National Electoral Commission of plotting to preload card readers to be used for the election. The governor said the plot to manipulate the poll in favour of the APC candidate (Fayemi) was being hatched in Akure, Ondo State, in collaboration with the APC-led Ondo State Government. “They are also printing fake voter cards in Akure with support from the Ondo State Government. They are also working to bring in about 14,000 people from Ondo State to come and vote here. They have already issued fake 7,000 voter’s cards and they are daily printing this.” Debunking the claim, Fayemi accused Fayose and officials of INEC of plotting to compromise the election. The former minister, who raised the alarm through the Kayode Fayemi Campaign Organisation, alleged that a former INEC official, Ishaku Abbo, and three INEC officials were neck-deep in the new plot. The Deputy Director-General (South) of KFCO, Bamidele Faparusi, said the team was led by Abbo, who, according to him, has been living with the governor in the Government House since January. He alleged that a secret meeting held in the Government House with three top officials of INEC from the national headquarters. The organisation gave the names of the officials as Egharevba John, Festus Aisien, Igidiogu Kelechi and Ishaku. SUNDAY PUNCH spoke with some stakeholders on the raging tension between the two political parties who are daily engaging each other in a battle of wits. Alluding to this, the Secretary of the Ekiti State Council of Elders, Pa Niyi Ajibulu, said it would not be far from the truth to describe the election as a battle between the federal-led and the state-led forces. “It has always been like that. It is a straight fight between the APC and the PDP. But we are only concerned about having the best candidate,” he added. Ajibulu expressed worry that the tactics that both parties had deployed in their campaign was another indicator that they were both desperate to win the election. “Since the campaign began, there have been gimmicks here and there. That is a bit worrisome and we have been appealing to them to make the campaign issue-based,” he stated. But the state Chairman of Trade Union Congress, Mr. Odunayo Adesoye, counselled that it would not be in the interest of the peace of the state for the election to take the dimension of a battle between the federal might and incumbency. The labour leader said, “I don’t subscribe to that. Federal might can’t come in a state where people know where they are going. There are 34 candidates in Ekiti and people are watching. The people should be allowed to vote according to their conscience. The Federal Government should ensure a credible, free and fair election so as not to tarnish its image.” Adesoye said the people already knew where they were going, hence their views should be respected. Responding to a question that the union seems to be given a tacit support to the PDP-led state government, Adesoye said, “There is no way unions will not work with state government. We are enjoying a perfect relationship. The immediate past government and the incumbent have done their bits. The present administration is doing well to be precise. We are not to condemn any of them because the state belongs to us all, irrespective of political party.” The state Chairman of the Road Transport Employees Association of Nigeria, Mr. Rotimi Agbede, however, called for caution in the conduct of the election. Agbede added, “The wish of the people should stand, there should be no harassment or intimidation. If the soldiers are coming, they are free, but they should not interfere in the election. “They should not favour one candidate against the other. Where there is perceived intimidation of the opposition, people may revolt. If the process is transparent, people will accept it.” The Chairman of the State Council of Traditional Rulers and Oloye of Oye-Ekiti, Oba Oluwole Ademolaju, called on the United States to prevent vote-buying during the July 14 governorship poll. He expressed concern over the exchange of words between the incumbent state government and the Federal Government, urging the US to deploy observers in the polling units to ensure each vote counted in the election. Oba Ademolaju spoke at a meeting of the council with the US Consul General, Mr. John Bray, held in the palace of the Ewi of Ado-Ekiti, Oba Rufus Adejugbe. “We want everybody to be carried along. We want reputable groups as monitors at polling units, not people who will just be moving about.” Oba Adejugbe noted that the people would be happy if the most popular candidate wins the election. The Ogoga of Ikere-Ekiti, Oba Adejimi Alagbado, warned against a replay of the 1983 experience during the election, where many houses were burnt in the old Ondo State. He said, “The eyes of the world will be on Ekiti on July 14. We would be here and we won’t let you down.” The state Chairman of the APC, Chief Jide Awe, expressed concern over the tension in the state. In an interview with our correspondent in Ado Ekiti, Awe accused Fayose of creating an atmosphere of tension by compelling workers to submit photocopies of their PVCs. He said, “The heat that is generating now is giving us concern, particularly, in the APC. A situation where the sitting governor is compelling workers to submit their PVC, duplicating them and keeping them is unacceptable. We have written to the INEC commissioner. The person doing this knows what he wants to do with them.” Awe said there was no way the election could be conducted without adequate security measure because of events leading to the election where workers were being allegedly coerced by the state government. He added, “Judging by the dramatic personae that will take part in the election, you can’t rule out beefing up of security. But the security agencies are to ensure safety of voters and election materials. But Fayose’s Special Assistant on New Media and Public Communications, Lere Olayinka, to the state, blamed Fayemi, DSS and the police for causing tension in the land by allegedly deploying a former security aides to Fayemi, claiming that they were in the state to manipulate the election. Olayinka added, “The former Governor’s CSO is among the DSS operatives in Ekiti now. That is enough to show there is a plot to manipulate the election by using federal might. “Abiola is part of the men of DSS on the streets wearing masks. Ekiti is not at war. Why are they going about in masks? How do you determine if they are real or fake security men? “We are also aware that Fayemi’s former ADC is to lead men of Mopol 22 from Lagos to Ekiti for this election. Those two are enough indicators.” He faulted the DSS for arresting some members of staff of Ola Oluwa Grammar School in Ado Ekiti while duplicating their PVCs. The Resident Electoral Commissioner in Ekiti, Prof. Abdul-Ganiyy Raji, promised that the election would be free and fair. In an interview with our correspondent, Raji, who spoke through the Public Relations Officer in Ekiti, Alh. Taiwo Gbadegesin, distanced the commission from allegations of collusion with political parties to rig the governorship poll. He said, “We are not under pressure to rig the election from any quarters and we won’t allow politicians to sabotage our efforts. We are an impartial umpire and will expect all the parties to conform with the electoral guidelines.” The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps has however assured the people that security agencies will be neutral in the election. Speaking with our correspondent, the NSCDC spokesperson in Ekiti, Tolu Afolabi, said, “Our role is defined by the Electoral Act and whatever INEC sanctions. If INEC says we should move five metres away from the polling units, we will move away and if INEC says we should come closer, we will do that. “Our duty in monitoring election is defined. Our work is minimal. It is to ensure safety of voters and to maintain peace. We are bringing men from Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Ogun and Edo (states) to join our men in Ekiti.” Notwithstanding the assurances from law enforcement agencies that the poll will be peaceful, residents of the state are still apprehensive of possible clashes between security agents and some politicians on election day. https://punchng.com/ekiti-gov-poll-more-accusations-as-tension-rises-ahead-of-d-day/ |

Your Edo rigging template won't work in Ekiti, Fayose replies Oshiomhole Ekiti State Governor, Chief Ayodele Fayose, has said nothing is haunting him and his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the people of the state go to poll next Saturday to elect a new governor, but that he and his party were only demanding the conduct of credible, free and fair election, declaring that plan to use what the "Edo State option" in Ekiti next Saturday will fail. This is just as the governor said he won the June 21, 2014 governorship election fair and square and that the credibility of the election was attested to by local and international observers such as the American Government, the British Department for International Development (DFID) among others, adding; "In the contrary, both local and international observers, including the media rejected the election that produced his successor." The governor, who spoke in Ado-Ekiti on Saturday through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Idowu Adelusi, was reacting to a statement credited to the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr Adams Oshiomhole, that the governor and the PDP were being haunted and jittery about the coming election. "Oshiomole's secret plan to use his fraudulent Edo template in Ekiti will never work and it will attract injurious consequences. This is because Ekiti people are resolutely determined to resist rigging right on the spot. "Contrary to Adams' diatribe, rumour peddling and rabble rousing unbecoming of an ex- governor and national chairman of the ruling party, Fayose and PDP are only interested in credible election. "Fayose and PDP are raising the alarm because of tell-tale signs that APC and Fayemi are plotting to rig the election. "The statements by top APC leaders including its former chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun that they must capture Ekiti by all means are very instructive in this regard. " Nigerians witnessed the blatant rigging of Ondo and Edo governorship elections by the APC. In Ondo, it was shameless vote buying. In Edo they stopped vote counting when it was clear PDP was winning and changed the results overnight. Seeing these, who will ask us to stay stupid? "Adams Oshiomhole was the mastermind of Edo rigging. He is only calling Fayose the name that rightly belongs to him (Oshiomhole)," he said. Fayose added that the 2014 governorship election that the APC and its leaders tried to rubbish, was declared by US and international community as free and fair and as reference point for future elections in Nigeria. "If Adams Oshiomhole still has problems with that election, he should address his misgivings to the US and international community. "Besides, APC challenged the election up to the Supreme Court but lost. Is Adams Oshiomhole disputing and despising the highest court of the land? It must be noted that he himself became governor by the same court judgment. "In case Adams Oshiomhole does not know, his record of double-dealing and collusion with ex-President Obasanjo to enrich himself as NLC President while deceiving workers and the suffering masses is in the public domain. "This fake Comrade hob-nobbed with OBJ in the night but came out in the day to deceive workers with empty rhetoric. In the end, OBJ hiked fuel price many times under Adams Oshiomhole's nose. Nigerians suffered while Adam Oshiomhole smiled to the bank. "Nigerians have not forgotten how wicked and cold-blooded he is with his "widow my foot" statement to that poor Edo state woman. He told the woman to "go and die". This contrasts sharply with Fayose's empathy for the poor and the down-trodden. "Adams Oshiomhole is a compulsive liar and power-hungry politician willing to rubbish his benefactors and kow-tow to bloody dictators who will butter his bread. He betrayed Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. He did similarly to his own kinsman Odigie-Oyegun - all in a bid to run errands for jihadists and reactionary elements. "The shameless lies peddled by Adams Oshiomhole are a blight on the high office he occupies. How, for instance, do you direct lecturers to award marks to students? How do you identify students voting PDP? The election is still in the future: How do you even know who will vote and who will not vote, not to talk of voting PDP? How do you know which lecturer is for you and which is not? And how do you ensure that marks are awarded? This is ridiculous and bizzare in the utmost. " He must be told that it is not a crime to photocopy one's credentials or documents. Everyone does it for security reasons. Can Adams swear that he does not photocopy his documents? In case of loss, photocopies help to fill the void and save us unnecessary embarrassment or inconveniences. The real reason why APC is instigating the arrest of teachers is because they know the teachers will vote against Fayemi on July 14. They are on a mission to intimidate teachers and disenfranchise as many of them as possible. Ekiti people will resist them by all means possible. They will fail. "What Ekiti people have already suspected was confirmed by loquacious Adams: that the APC - led Federal government is delaying the release of federal allocation so that Ekiti government will not be able to pay salaries, which they can then use to campaign. This is wickedness of the highest order. It is man's inhumanity to man. But what do we expect from a people and government not bothered by the daily shedding of innocent blood under their nose? Has Adams at any time spoken against the murderous herdsmen even when they killed his people in Edo state? Can the government he fraudulently installed in Edo dare what we did in Ekiti to contain the murderous herdsmen? Is it not true that Fayemi has demonstrated his soft spot for the herdsmen through his speeches, actions and inactions? "We sound it loud and clear that we will not abrogate our anti-grazing law in the same way we will resist APC agenda to take Ekiti by force by manipulating the coming election. "Adams himself said it all: He mentioned that Nigerians rejected APC in Osun, Anambra and Bayelsa. He forgot to mention Oyo state as well. In like manner APC will be rejected overwhelmingly by Ekiti people next Saturday. "APC is factionalised right under Adams' nose. If he does not consider that enough trouble, he will meet his Waterloo in Ekiti come July 14 when Ekiti people will seal his running mouth for him." https://www.punchng.com/your-edo-rigging-template-wont-work-in-ekiti-fayose-replies-oshiomhole/amp/
