When will Lai Mohammed respect his age and stop lying? – Reno My attention has been drawn to fallacious comments made by the notoriously dishonest Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, to the effect that the Jonathan administration did not act on time when the Chibok Girls were kidnapped whereas the Buhari government acted promptly when the Dapchi Girls were kidnapped. Speaking at the foundation laying ceremony of the Editors’ Plaza by the Nigerian Guild of Editors, Lai Mohammed said: “Now, don’t compare orange with apple. When Chibok girls were kidnapped, it took the PDP government 18 full days to admit that the girls were kidnapped. This time we swung into action within 24 hours”. Lai’s comments are reminiscent of the statement made by Presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, justifying President Buhari’s inaction on killer Fulani herdsmen because the herdsmen also killed during Jonathan’s tenure. When will Lai Mohammed respect his old age and stop lying? Is he not ashamed at the storm he is currently facing on social media after he lied that 100 planes are searching for the Dapchi Girls, a statement that was promptly denounced as a lie by the Nigerian Air Force? Even members of his own government know Lai Mohammed is a liar. For the avoidance of doubt, it is not true that the Jonathan government took 18 days to admit that the Chibok Girls were kidnapped. The Chibok Girls were kidnapped on April 14, 2014. Exactly three days later, on April 17, 2014, then President Goodluck Jonathan called an emergency National Security Council meeting at Aso Rock Presidential Villa. If the Jonathan administration did not admit that the Chibok Girls were kidnapped, why would the President summon a Nation Security Council meeting? Now more than a week after the Dapchi Girls were kidnapped, has President Buhari held a National Security Council meeting to address the situation? No he has not. As a matter of fact, to prove to Nigerians how inept he is, the President canceled this week’s Federal Executive Council meeting. Which serious leader cancels the most important meeting in his nation at a time when Kaduna is facing ethnic and religious killings, Zamfara is facing mass killings by bandits, Benue, Plateau, Adamawa and Taraba are facing an onslaught from Fulani herdsmen and 110 girls were kidnapped in Dapchi? Going back to the Jonathan administration, the Nigerian Army and Air force began searching for the girls after the emergency National Security Council meeting on April 17, 2014, with sorties being flown in search of the girls. But very curiously, Nigerians would recall that the All Progressive Congress Governor of Borno State, Governor Kashim Shettima, admitted in an interview he gave Premium Times on April 2, 2016, that he deliberately did not inform the then President about the Chibok kidnap when it happened. President Jonathan had to find out from military forces on the ground. Why would the chief security officer of his state be that negligent? My advice to Alhaji Lai Mohammed is that he should direct his lying talents to the specific task of cooking up lies to counter the testimony of the APC Yobe State Governor, Ibrahim Geidam, who blamed the kidnapping of the Dapchi Girls on the Buhari administration. According to Mr. Geidam, the Nigerian Army under President Buhari pulled out the troops guarding Government Girls Science and Technology College, Dapchi. Who gave the order for the troops to leave their guard duty? The sector command has said that they handed over security of the school to the Nigerian Police Force, an assertion that has been denied by the police. These are the things that should concern Lai Mohammed, not a contest with an administration that scored higher anti-corruption ratings from Transparency International than the corrupt government he is serving. And if he has too much time on his hand, Lai Mohammed can travel to more European football clubs to disgrace himself and his family by wearing a suit jacket on top of an agbada. Let me end by saying that whoever named Lai Mohammed at birth must have been a prophet. The person was able to look far ahead into Lai’s future and gave him a name that rhymes with his life’s purpose. Mr Lai Mohammed, is this also part of naysayers work How Nigeria caused collapse of seven Thailand rice mills — Minister The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Audu Ogbeh, says Thailand has accused Nigeria of being responsible for the collapse of its seven rice mills following the drastic fall in rice importation from the country.https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/260509-nigeria-caused-collapse-seven-thailand-rice-mills-minister.html |

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has said that naysayers had taken to Social Media and spending huge amounts of money to distort the situation in Nigeria. The Minister stated this at a mini town hall meeting which he organised for members of staff of the Nigerian Embassy in Berlin, Germany and a cross-section of Nigerians residing in the European country. Mohammed was in Berlin to attend a meeting of African Tourism Ministers, on the sidelines of the International Travel Trade Fair in the German capital. lai mohammed Lai Mohammed A statement issued on the mini town hall meeting in Berlin was made available to newsmen in Abuja by the Mr Segun Adeyemi, the Special Adviser to the minister. The minister said the naysayers, who were hoping to override the string of achievements by the present administration in the country, were spending huge amounts of money to spread fake news about Nigeria. He said: “Contrary to the fake news being peddled in the Social Media by the naysayers, President Muhammadu Buhari is putting Nigeria back on its feet. “That is why Nigerians at home and abroad must ensure they have access to authentic information. “One way is to download the FGNiAPP on their hand-held devices. It is free.” ”The economy is on a steady growth, as attested to be by the latest report from the National Bureau of Statistics: “The economy attracted 12.2 billion dollars in foreign investments in 2017, up from $5.38 billion in 2016. “That represents 138 per cent increase. ‘’The economy further consolidated its recovery from recession with GDP growing by 1.92 per cent in Q4 2017,compared to 1.40 per cent in Q3 2017 and a contraction of -1.73 per cent in Q4 2016;. “This means the economy ended 2017 with a growth of 0.82 per cent compared to a contraction of -1.58 per cent in 2016. “GDP growth in Q4 2017 was driven by growth in crop production, crude production and natural gas, metal ores, construction, transportation and storage, trade, electricity and gas production,. “These are indications that the administration’s diversification effort is working.” Mohammed blamed the incessant clashes between farmers and herdsmen on environmental, rather than ethnic or religious issues. He noted that contrary to the narrative being pushed in certain quarters that gave ethnic and religious coloration to the clashes, they were caused by purely environmental issues. Mohammed said whereas, Nigeria’s population in 1963 was about 48 million, ‘’it is now about 180 million with the country’s land mass remaining the same.’’ He said the implication was that, there were more people per square kilometre, adding that this development raised the chances of clashes over dwindling resources. The minister also said that Lake Chad that which used to provide water and other resources to more than 30 million people in four countries, including Nigeria in the early 1960s had shrunk by about 90 per cent. He said the lake which had shrunk from 25,000 square kilometres to 2,500 square kilometres, forced those affected to move south in search of resources. ”These and other reasons, like desertification, have altered the resource landscape, heightened competition for dwindling resources and raised the possibility of clashes between farmers and herders.” Mohammed, who assured of the Federal Government’s commitment to finding lasting solution to the clashes, noted that the establishment of ranches was one sure way of reducing such clashes. He, however, said that in resolving the crisis, both the farmers and the herders must be willing to shift slightly from their positions grounded in their way of life over centuries. For his part, Nigeria’s Ambassador to Germany, Alhaji Yusuf Tuggar, commended the patriotism and dedication of the Nigerians in Diaspora, especially those in Germany. ”There is a burgeoning Nigerian community (in Germany), committed to the prosperity of Nigeria. “They are well in tune with the policies of the Nigerian government and they are accomplished men and women and worthy ambassadors,” he said. In their comments, some leaders of the Nigerian Diaspora commended the government for the progress being made in lifting up the country. They stressed the need to step up efforts to ensure the security of life and property in order to attract more foreign investors to the country. A naysayer is a person who says something will not or is not possible , or one who is skeptical or cynical about something. ttps://www.vanguardngr.com/2018/03/naysayers-spending-money-distort-truth-nigeria-lai-mohammed/

AS Nigeria joins countries of the world to celebrate the 2018 International Women’s day, wife of the President, Mrs. Aisha Buhari has told perpetrators of abductions and various harmful practices against women and girls to stop forthwith. The First Lady who was speaking at the ceremony to mark the International Women’s Day, yesterday at the National Center for Women Development, Abuja, observed that for Nigeria, the day must be marked with a difference considering the sad incidence of the abduction of girls, especially the case of Chibok and Dapchi, which must take the national spotlight. The wife of the President in a statement signed by her Director of Information, Suleiman Haruna, said, “As a mother, I share the sorrow and agony of the parents at this time, it is my sincere hope that efforts by government will soon lead to their release.” In her message entitled, “Leave our daughters alone”, she said, it was a strong call for the end of abductions, charging the media to own the campaign and spread message. The President’s wife also charged wives of the Governors to propagate the campaign in their various states, stating that the message must echo through all corners of Nigeria and be on everyone’s lips. She repeatedly echoed, “Leave our daughters alone, leave our daughters alone, leave our daughters alone.” Speaking earlier, wife of the Vice President, Mrs. Dolapo Osinbajo, while congratulating women as they celebrated the special day, said it was sad that Nigerian women were witnessing the worst of times because of many negative things that are happening. Mrs Osinbajo, however, noted that at the same the women were also witnessing the best of times in many respects, adding, “This is because there are many good stories happening around women.” Director-General of the National Center for Women Development, Barrister Mary Ekpere-Eta, said this year, there was an unprecedented global movement for women’s rights, equality and justice. She said sexual harassment, violence and discrimination against women have captured public discourse, propelled by a rising determination for change, which she noted were instrumental to the declaration by the Wife of the President on the harmful practices affecting women and girls in Nigeria. The DG drew attention to the plight of rural women, who despite their hard work lack basic infrastructure and services, decent work and social protection, and are left more vulnerable to the effects of climate change. She called for urgent action to reverse this trend and ensure better life for the rural women. Goodwill messages were delivered by UNICEF, UN Women, UNFPA and a host of others. Highlight of the event was an exhibition of women’s business products. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2018/03/aisha-buhari-boko-haram-rapists-kidnappers-leave-daughters-alone/amp/

Governor of Kaduna state, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai has lashed out at the organized labour unions in the country, saying they have destroyed the nation more than they have contributed to it. El-Rufai Speaking Thursday in Abuja at a ‘Governance Matters’ roundtable organized by Development Alternative Incorporation, DAI, the governor said the excesses of the trade unions must be curtailed. “Trade Unions have never served the country well. They have been selfish and everything is about their narrow interests. In general, in Nigeria, trade unions have been a danger to our progress and I think they should be curtailed. “The mistake we made as a country was placing trade unions in the Exclusive Legislative List. If the Academic Staff Unions of Universities ASUU has an issue with the Federal Government, then the state universities will go on strike too. In Kaduna, I warned the Kaduna state University, that if ‘you ever go on strike gain because of somebody else, I will fire all of you’. Advocates “Very Low” Minimum Wage “I think we need to do some things. First, take labour matters out of the Exclusive List because many of us are victims of agreements reached with ASUU by the federal government. The states were never part of such agreements. Secondly, is the issue of minimum wage. Except we set a very low minimum wage, there will continue be issues especially with states that do not have wide tax net. You cannot set the same minimum wage for Lagos and Jigawa. Also, we must apply the labour laws strictly. No work, no pay, because there has to be a trade dispute before anything strike. That is what the law says. “I think the health unions have been the most irresponsible because only an irresponsible doctor will abandon his patients even after swearing to the Hippocratic Oath. I think Nigerian doctors are the only ones on the planet that go on strike. “We have submitted our report on True Federalism and it will be taken to the National Assembly. We hope the National Assembly will stop dealing with inanities and deal with the real issues”, he said. The governor also accused some past governors of Yobe and Borno states for been responsible for the emergence of the Boko Haram sect due to their negligence of the education sector. “We tended to ignore this problem (of out of school children) but this problem when ignored gave us Boko Haram. If you look at education statistics in Yobe and Borno in 2003 and 2004, you could reasonably predict that Boko Haram would happen within a decade. So, this is a huge problem”, he said. On his part, Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole said the federal health institutions are over-staffed while there is a dearth of health officers at the primary healthcare level. “Let me state that Nigeria has a large stock of human resources, the problem is that of distribution. There is a wide gap between the north and the south. Over 60 percent of our human resources are concentrated in Lagos and Abuja and the rest have little to cope with. “There is a state in this country with 23 doctors and 24 hospitals. That means we do not even have one doctor for one hospital. I was at Ahmadu Bello Teaching Hospital and they said they needed more staff and I said no, that we are over-staffed at the federal level. Over 80 percent of our resources is dedicated to personnel cost and we cannot really deliver on our mandate where the large chunk of allocation is for personnel and then you have a situation where te states cannot pay salaries”, he said. Treat every Incidence of Malaria as Lassa Fever Meanwhile, as part of measures to curb the growing incidences of Lassa Fever, the Federal Government has advised medical doctors and other health practitioners to handle all suspected cases of malaria with extreme care, urging them to first treat such cases as Lassa Fever. “Lassa is entirely a disease that should stay among animals but we have animal-human barriers being jumped and then we are affected. “When healthcare workers are infected, everybody coming in contact with that worker is in trouble and that is why we believe we need to do certain things. We can treat Lassa fever when we detect it early. We are telling our health workers that it is not every fever that is malaria. In the past, once there is fever, they treat malaraia for three, four, five days and when there is no improvement, they change to typhoid fever and treat for another one week and by the second week, the fellow with the viral haemorrhagic fever would have had a renal shut down and start bleeding from al the orifices and then is gone beyond treatment. So, what we are saying is that no one should treat malaria without diagnosis. There are rapid diagnostic tests to treat malaria. So, once you check and it is not malaria, you think Lassa straight away. You have just lost a few hours not two weeks and every suspected case must be treated as a case of Lassa until proven otherwise”, he said. Earlier, Managing Director, Governance, DAI Global, Jeremy Kanthor said the organization is determined to make a lasting difference in Nigeria. More than 500 Canadian doctors, as well as over 150 medical students, have signed a public letter protesting the recent government’ policy to increase their pay. “We, Quebec doctors who believe in a strong public system, oppose the recent salary increases negotiated by our medical federations,” the letter says. The group complain that they don’t consider it appropriate to receive increased pay while the nurses and the patients suffer. “These increases are all the more shocking because our nurses, clerks and other professionals face very difficult working conditions, while our patients live with the lack of access to required services because of the drastic cuts in recent years and the centralization of power in the Ministry of Health,” reads the letter, which was published February 25. “The only thing that seems to be immune to the cuts is our remuneration,” the letter says. Canada has a public health system which provides “universal coverage for medically necessary health care services provided on the basis of need, rather than the ability to pay,” the government’s website says. The 213 general practitioners, 184 specialists, 149 resident medical doctors and 162 medical students want the money used for their raises to be returned to the system instead. “We believe that there is a way to redistribute the resources of the Quebec health system to promote the health of the population and meet the needs of patients without pushing workers to the end,” the letter says. “We, Quebec doctors, are asking that the salary increases granted to physicians be canceled and that the resources of the system be better distributed for the good of the health care workers and to provide health services worthy to the people of Quebec.” A physician in Canada is paid $260,924 ($339,000 Canadian) for clinical services by the government’s Ministry of Health per year on average, according to a report from the Canadian Institute for Health Information published in September 2017. On average, a family physician is paid $211,717 ($275,000 Canadian) for clinical services and a surgical specialist is paid $354,915 ($461,000 Canadian), according to the same report. This is total gross pay, however, and does not take into account overhead each doctor pays to operate, as the Canadian Institute for Health Information is careful to point out to CNBC Make It. In May 2016, one physician publicly broke down the cost of running his family practice, and though he brought in $231,033 ($300,000 Canadian), he was left with $136,906 ($177,876 Canadian) after subtracting his business expenses — but before taxes and employment benefits are taken out. The cost of medical school in Canada is subsidized by provincial governments, according to The Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada. The cost varies depending on whether a student is a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or foreign student and the particular school. For Canadian citizens or permanent residents, tuition for the first year of medical school ranges from $2567 ($3,334 Canadian) to $20,064 ($26,056 Canadian), according to The Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada’s website. The same group, the Médecins Québécois pour le Régime Public (MQRP), that published the aforementioned public letter, also published a letter on February 17 opposing $500 million worth of pay increases for specialist doctors. The group called the pay increase “indecent.” And on February 1, the MQRP published a letter denouncing working conditions of nurses. “The nurses are exhausted by a heavy workload. They argue that the chronic lack of staff and the fatigue caused by repeated overtime, sometimes mandatory, for lack of replacement of the team, have an impact on the safety of patient care,” the letter says. http://www.correctng.com/500-canadian-doctors-protest-raises-say-theyre-paid-much/

It is worrisome for IGP Idris to go on leave at this time of crisis - Reps lament The House of Representatives Adhoc committee members are displeased with the commencement of annual leave by the inspector general of police, Ibrahim Idris - The Adhoc committee members investigating a petition filed by DCP Abduyari Lafia against the IGP, faulted the leave because of security crisis rocking the country - It stated that it had summoned the IGP on different occasions in respect of the petition, but the police boss was yet to appear Douye Diri, the chairman, Adhoc committee investigating the 'purported harassment, intimidation and threat to life' leveled against the inspector general of police, Ibrahim Idris, by DCP Abduyari Lafia, has questioned the rationale behind the commencement of leave by the IG while there are security crises in the country, The Nation reports. NAIJ.com gathered that following the petition sent by the DCP Lafia to the House, the House had invited the IGP, but was surprised that he could not appear at the hearing after two invitations sent to him. Diri said: “It is worrisome for the president to grant three weeks leave to the IGP at this time that the country is experiencing crisis and the security situation is becoming very bad.” According to the legal adviser to the IGP, the police boss embarked on three weeks leave following the approval President Muhammadu Buhari. Members of the Adhoc committee expressed displeasure over the IGP’s attitude to the issue of security of lives and property. The chairman of the Adhoc committee said: “The matter the committee is investigating has to do with corruption, harassment and threat to life, between a junior police officer and a senior police officer which when brought to the public domain is not good for the image, credibility and the integrity of the police institution." Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that the House of Representatives reportedly summoned the inspector general of police, Ibrahim Idris, over the alleged constant harassment of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, a political group loyal to the former governor of Kano state, Rabiu Kwankwaso. Just like Sule Lamido, the former governor of Jigawa state, Kwankwaso was believed to be eyeing the presidency and had been making consultations and building his team ahead of 2019. The House also constituted an ad-hoc panel to investigate the real reasons the supporters of the former governor were being intimidated and harassed. https://www.naija.ng/amp/1156043-insecurity-reps-lament-commencement-annual-leave-by-igp-idris.html |
