PoliticsINEC Responsible For Underage Voting In Kano – PDP by engineerboat(op): 11:30pm On Feb 14, 2018
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says Nigerians have lost confidence in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for attempting to cover its complicity in the widespread impunity recorded in last Saturday’s Kano local council elections.

DAILY POST recalls that INEC had said in a press statement that the disturbing reports of underage voting that emerged from the just concluded local polls in Kano State did not relate to any election it conducted or had responsibility for.

According to the national electoral body, the clarification was necessary in order to allay public worries over the credibility of the 2019 elections.

However, the PDP insisted that it was INEC that registered and documented minors as voters in the first place and as such should not in any way attempt to exonerate itself of involvement in the electoral fraud, simply because it did not directly conduct the elections.

PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, in a statement on Wednesday, said “the press release by INEC, wherein it tried to exonerate itself from culpability in the participation of minors in Kano election, clearly shows that INEC under Prof. Mahmood Yakubu is completely unreliable and cannot be trusted.

“We ask: Who is fooling who? Is it not INEC that registered the minors and issued them with Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVC) to participate in elections as clearly documented in the Kano council election? Can INEC truly acquit itself as the original culprit who set the stage for the eventual participation of the minors and overall rigging of the elections?

“By resorting to lame excuses and trying to exonerate itself at a time it should be taking decisive steps to protect the sanctity of its sensitive materials such as the PVC, this INEC has shown that it cannot be relied upon as a responsible and trustworthy electoral umpire.

“Indeed, if this INEC was serious about the sanctity of sensitive electoral materials, by now, it should have ordered the immediate review of its voter register in Kano and Katsina states, fishing out and prosecuting those who registered the minors and clean up the electoral system in the affected states.

“Viewed alongside series of numerous other irregularities being allowed by INEC to favor the ruling APC, including alleged conspiracy with APC-controlled security operatives to intimidate opposition members and manipulate elections as witnessed in the last Saturday’s Mashi/Dutsi Federal Constituency Supplementary election in Katsina state, any reasonable person will decode that INEC, as presently constituted, has serious questions to answer, especially as we approach the 2019 general elections.

“While we now hold the statement by INEC as part of our strong evidence of irregularities and violations in the elections, we charge the commission to redeem its name by immediately reviewing and sanitizing its voter registers in affected states, particularly, Kano and Katsina, as that it the only way it can demonstrate its dependability to Nigerians.

“Finally, we want INEC to note, and in very strong terms too, that Nigerians will not accept anything short of credible, free and fair general election. The commission should therefore ensure that it does not allow itself to be used by the APC against the will of the people, particularly in the 2019 elections, as such will be highly resisted.”

PoliticsSouth Africa's President Jacob Zuma Resigns by engineerboat(op): 10:20pm On Feb 14, 2018
South Africa's embattled President Jacob Zuma has resigned his office with immediate effect.

He made the announcement in a televised address to the nation on Wednesday evening.

Earlier, Mr Zuma's governing ANC party told him to resign or face a vote of no confidence in parliament on Thursday.

The 75-year-old has been under increasing pressure to give way to Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa, the ANC's new leader.

Mr Zuma, who has been in power since 2009, faces numerous allegations of corruption.

His resignation came at the end of a long speech in which he said he disagreed with the way the ANC had acted towards him.

He said he did not fear a motion of no-confidence, adding: "I have served the people of South Africa to the best of my ability."

The ANC issued a statement saying Mr Zuma's resignation provided "certainty to the people of South Africa".

Mr Zuma, a former member of the ANC's military wing in the days of apartheid, rose through the ranks of the party to become president. He led the country for more than a third of its time after apartheid.

But he leaves office with several scandals hanging over him, and with South Africa's economy in dire straits.

PoliticsLooter Tithes’ Comment: Bello Apologises To Catholic Bishops by engineerboat(op): 6:46am On Feb 12, 2018
The Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, has apologised to the Catholic bishops and Christians over his alleged comment that those who opposed President Muhammadu Buhari were corrupt Christian leaders who were unhappy because looters were no longer able to pay tithes to them.

Bello said he could never insult men of God as he had “tremendous respect for the Catholic Community.”

He said he would not do anything to disparage any religious organisation.

The governor was reacting to the criticism that greeted his comment in which he was quoted as carpeting the Catholic bishops who paid a visit to Buhari last week and expressed their misgivings about the President’s perceived nepotism and killings by Fulani herdsmen in parts of the country.

The governor said those criticising the President were those sympathetic to looters and that the bishops were angry because tithes were no longer coming from looters.

But Bello in statement signed on his behalf by his Director General of Media and Publicity, Kingsley Fanwo, said the reports that he disrespected the Catholic Community and its leaders was “another low by my detractors in their desperation to portray me as an irresponsible leader.”

He said, “My statements to the press were misconstrued and misrepresented but I take full responsibility for this as I tender my unreserved apology to the Catholic bishops and by extension my Christian brothers and sisters who are displeased with my statement on tithing.

“I recognise the enormous contributions of the Catholic Church to entrenching a social order which is devoid of corruption, oppression and in the promotion of socio-economic justice.”

Bello said he was confident that genuine religious leaders of all faith were united in Buhari’s fight against corruption, insisting that no good religion has a place for corruption and corrupt people.

He said, “The Catholic Church has done very well in promoting literacy and health care. I am quite familiar with a good number of Catholic priests and I know their stance on the issue of corruption. Every church and religion must fight corruption because corruption oppresses the poor and destroy justice and fairness.”

PoliticsEkiti APC Kicks Against Anti-grazing Law, Insists States Must Give Lands For Cat by engineerboat(op):
The All Progressives Congress (APC), in Ekiti State has said States Anti-Grazing Law pioneered by the Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose and farmers should be blamed for killings by Fulani herdsmen, maintaining that the only way to end the killings of Nigerians by Fulani herdsmen was the creation of Cattle Colonies in all the 36 States of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The party also lambasted the Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose for his refusal to support the federal government policy on creation of cattle colonies and insisted that were the State to be under APC, lands would have been allocated to cattle farmers as a way of boosting the economy of the State.

This was made known by the APC Deputy Chairman, Chief Kemi Olaleye, while speaking on a popular radio station in Ibadan, Oyo State over the weekend.

She urged Fulani herdsmen in Ekiti State to be patient and wait for the APC to take over government in October this year for cattle colonies to be created in Orin Farm Settlement in Orin Ekiti, Aramoko Ekiti Forest Reserve, Itapaji Dam Area, Oke-Ako, Ise-Emure axis and Otun Ekiti.

When she was asked the position of the APC in Ekiti State on cattle colony, she said; “We will create cattle colonies in Ekiti State when we return to power and there is no argument about that.”
access-bank-ad-westernpostnigeria

The APC Deputy Chairman described Governor Fayose’s visit to Benue State to commiserate with the State Governor, Samual Ortom and the people of the State over killings by suspected herdsmen as a way to mock President Muhammadu Buhari.

Chief Olaleye said the APC was not sympathizing with Governor Ortom
and the people of Benue State over the killings by Fulani herdsmen because they were warned against the consequences of the Anti-Grazing
Law, which was erroneous copied from Governor Fayose.

RomanceLagosians React As Valentine’s Day, Ash Wednesday Fall On Same Day by engineerboat(op): 10:49pm On Feb 11, 2018
Lagosians react as Valentine’s Day, Ash Wednesday fall on same day

Some Lagosians on Sunday said celebrating Valentine’s Day on the same day that most Christians will start observing the 40-day Lenten season might cause some conflicts of interest.

They said this in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) when they were informed that this year’s Valentine Day and Ash Wednesday both fall on Wednesday, Feb. 14.

NAN reports that on Ash Wednesday, Christians are expected to receive Ash on their foreheads, fast by not eating foods and refrain from some social activities.
They are also expected to engage themselves in prayers and in charity works from Ash Wednesday till Holy Saturday when the season of Lenten will be over.
This was to make them, followers of Jesus Christ, to comply with what he did while on earth.

He fasted for 40 days and 40 nights, suffered persecution, died on Good Friday, and rose from the dead on Easter Sunday.
NAN also reports that during the commemoration of St. Valentine’s Day, usually on Feb. 14 of every year, people celebrate it by sending cards, flowers, chocolates and messages of love to loved ones.

In recent years and with the advent of eateries, youths always invite their spouses to eateries, cinemas and other recreational centers to celebrate the day.
Mr Hillary Okongwu, a legal practitioner, told NAN that the unusual timing of the two events would definitely not affect his celebration of love on Feb. 14.
Okongwu said that while Valentine enjoins him to show love to the world, Ash Wednesday was to him, a gentle reminder of mortality.

He said that it was a reminder that he needed to keep his mind focused on the ultimate goal of making heaven.
“The combined effect of both events shows that I, as a person, must strive to show love to the world as much as I can because no man will live forever.
“The celebration, however, carries a deeper message than the superficial celebration.
“The world is torn apart because of lack of love among men.
“Our family and societal experiences lend credence to the fact that for any meaningful development to take place there must be peace and love.

“Peace is borne out of love for your fellow man. Lent is ultimately important to keep our spiritual minds rejuvenated and to remind us of our spiritual destination,’’ Okongwu said.
Irebowale Ogebule, an entrepreneur, told NAN that some Christians might not participate in the Ash Wednesday church activities because of their own Valentine programme.

Ogebule said that the fact that this year’s Season of Lent commences on that day means that a lot of people might prefer to ignore it and invest in their love life.
She said that most of the youths would rather hang out with their friends at the cinemas to watch romantic movies.
“I think developing the spirit mind is a personal decision. We don’t have to wait for Lent to do that.

“Most Pentecostal churches have their own season of fasting and personal intercession with God.
“It is also important to know that the commemoration of Valentine Day has an impact on businesses which contributes to economic growth.
“Valentine Day celebration can contribute and stimulate the economy of our immediate society. It can be very significant to the core capitalist.
“As you know, no matter what you sell, you will still have people to patronise you on that day.

“People who run eateries, beer parlour, restaurants and clubs will make their sales that day because that is where many people will hangout.
“Meanwhile, we must not forget that because that same day is when most Christians will commencement this year’s Season of Lenten will reduce sales.

“Foods to be consumed by Christians will reduce and of course alcohol sales will practically be at zero level,’’ Ogebule said.
Kehinde Dosunmu, a marketer, said that Valentine Day did not mean anything to him as a member of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG).

He said the RCCG fasting and prayer was still ongoing noting that showing love must not be restricted to a day celebration.
He said that he always show love to anyone around him because God is love.

“It is not only on Valentine’s Day that is about showing love to your spouse alone or others.”
Ms Faith Okeke, an official with Wale Adenuga Production, said the coincidence of the two events, would not affect her from serving her God.

Okeke said that she would participate in the reception of the ash in her church on Feb. 14.
She said that the Season of Lent starting on Ash Wednesday was more important to her than a celebration that would be short-lived.
She said that putting both on a scale; the Christian activities for the day would carry more weight to her more due to its importance.

“The fact is that Christians don’t joke with such days. It is holy and sacred’’, she said.
An events’ planner, Miss Nancy Anuforo, told NAN that she might not participate in the religious activities attached to this year’s Ash Wednesday.

Anuforo said that she would be hanging out with her fiancée who would be travelling down to Lagos for both of them to celebrate Valentine Day together.

“Since it is the beginning of the season of Lent, l can still catch up, just let me enjoy myself before the season thickens.
“I don’t want to miss the indulgence of that day, the chocolate eating and other accompanied delicacies, “she said.

PoliticsKatsina, Kano Polls Show Buhari Has Lost Popularity In Stronghold: PDP by engineerboat(op): 6:35pm On Feb 11, 2018
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said the resort to deployment of heavily armed security forces to muscle votes for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in last Saturday’s House of Representatives bye-election in Katsina state has further shown that President Muhammadu Buhari and his party have completely lost popularity among Nigerians, even in the President’s home state.

The party also described the last Saturday’s Kano state local council election, which was also characterized by outright cheating, open underaged voting and ballot stuffing, as a wholesome mockery of electoral process.

The party believed these two elections have signified that the APC cannot win any free and fair election, even in their stronghold.

PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, in a statement on Sunday, said the fact that the APC had to resort to brute force and allocation of ballots to gain votes in the bye-election in Mashi/Dutsi Federal Constituency, which ordinarily should have been for them, a walk in the park, being President Buhari’s constituency, shows that the party has pathetically lost it all.

The PDP said the fact that it still held a legitimate 22,690 votes against the 30,719 fraudulently allocated to the APC, despite the use of force and other brazen infractions by the APC, shows that PDP is the natural winner of the election.

“It further strengthens our resolve that our party, the PDP, still commands a genuine followership among Nigerians.

“We however invite Nigerians and the international community to mark how the APC and its controlled Federal Government are corrupting our electoral system, by using force to intimidate the people and steal their votes.

“The APC is also corrupting security officials to use maximum force as a desperate measure to save President Buhari, whose popularity had dipped across our nation.

“In their desperation to help the President, the APC in cahoot with the inept Presidency declared war on the people by ensuring the deployment of over 1,000 heavily armed and hostile security operatives for an election that held in only 15 polling units within two local governments of Katsina State.

“It is unfortunate that the APC has recoursed to worst kind of intimidation and violations twelve calendar months ahead of the general elections.

“Currently, the PDP is compiling a comprehensive documentary evidence of infractions and irregularities including barring of legitimate voters from accessing polling centers, assigning of polling units to APC government functionaries, indiscriminate arrests of opposition members and supporters, underaged voting and allocation of votes for APC as well as conflict between results from the polling units and collation centers among others.

“Also being compiled is the identity of the security and electoral officials used by the APC to subvert the will of the people, which will be made public while ensuring that they are prosecuted.

“The clear message to the APC is that the will of the people will prevail in 2019 as Nigerians will never allow the shameful impunity and suppression witnessed in Katsina and Kano during last Saturday’s election as they will be fully rallied to resist such across board”, the party said.

The PDP, however, urged its members in both states to remain calm as it takes decisive but legitimate steps to reclaim their stolen mandate.

Catholic Bishops to Buhari: Your govt is failing, your goodwill being “fast depleted”

Catholic Bishops in Nigeria on Thursday called on President Muhammadu Buhari to end the endless suffering, killings and other crimes afflicting Nigerians.

They made the plea when they paid a courtesy call on the President at the State House, Abuja.

The clerics in an address delivered by Ignatius Kaigama, Archbishop of Jos, and William Avenya, the Bishop of Gboko, said “there is too much suffering in the country: poverty, hunger, insecurity, violence, fear… the list is endless.

“Our beloved country appears to be under siege Many negative forces seem to be keeping a stranglehold on the population, especially the weaker and defenceless ones”.

Read full text of their address below:

Your Excellency,

Preamble We, the representatives of the Catholic Bishops of Nigeria, bring you our cordial greetings and blessings. We desired this meeting, in order to continue the dialogue we initiated with you even before your election as President. We therefore thank you for granting us this audience, which affords us the opportunity to share with you, once again, our thoughts and concerns on some ssues affecting our dear country, Nigeria

First, we thank God for bringing you back to us after a period of ill health.
We hope and pray that you continue to make progress on the way to full recovery, in order to be able to face the enormous challenges emanating from your exalted office

Your Excellency, needless to say that, as President, you are the Father of our dear country Nigeria. It is therefore pertinent that as loyal citizens as well as informed members of the society we come to you from time to time to express not only our willing cooperation with the government in working for the progress of our country, but also to share with you the feelings of the multitude of Nigerians at this moment. We work with the people at the grassroots and therefore, have first-hand information about what they are going through

There is no doubt that when you came into office, you had an enormous amount of the goodwill of Nigerians, since many saw you as a person of integrity who would be able to bring sanity into a system that was nearly crippled by endemic corruption. Nearly three years later, however one has the feeling that this good will is being fast depleted by some glaring failures of government which we have the moral responsibility to bring to your notice, else we would be failing in our duty as spiritual fathers and leaders.

Our Concerns

Your Excellency, there is too much suffering in the country: poverty, hunger, insecurity, violence, fear… the list is endless. Our beloved country appears to be under siege Many negative forces seem to be keeping a stranglehold on the population, especially the weaker and defenceless ones.

There is a feeling of hopelessness across the country. Our youths are restive and many of them have taken to hard drugs, cultism and other forms of iolent crime, while many have become victims of human trafficking. The Nation is nervous.

Just as we seem to be gradually emerging from the dark tunnel of an economic recession that caused untold hardship to families and individuals, violent attacks by unscrupulous persons, among whom are terrorists masquerading as herdsmen, have led to a near civil war situation in many parts of the country. We are saddened that, repeatedly, innocent citizens in different communities across the nation are brutally attacked and their sources of livelihood mindlessly destroyed. Lives are wasted and property, worth billions of Naira, including places of worship schools, hospitals and business enterprises are torched and turned to ashes.

We are still more saddened by the recent massacre of unarmed citizens by these terrorists in some communities n Benue, Adamawa, Kaduna and Taraba States which has caused national shock, grief and outcry. The silence of the federal government in the wake of these horrifying attacks is, to say the least, shocking. There is a feeling of helplessness among the people and the danger that some people may begin to take laws into their hands.

We therefore earnestly urge the government to take very seriously its primary responsibility of protecting the lives and property of its citizens and ensure that such mindless killings do not reoccur. Herdsmen may be under pressure to save their livestock and economy but this is never to be done at the expense of other people’s lives and means of livelihood. We would like to add our voice to those of other well-meaning Nigerians who insist that a better alternative to open grazing should be sought rather than introducing “cattle colonies” in the country. While thinking of how best to help cattle owners establish ranches, government should equally have plans to help the other farmers whose produce is essential for our survival as a nation

In a similar vein, daredevil kidnappers, who at present are having a field day, with a feeling of invincibility, must be made to understand that there is a government in this country Government should invest more in equipping our Police Force with modern high-tech devices that will help them track down and arrest these criminals and make them face the wrath of the law.

The Federal Character Principle is enshrined in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria: “The government of the Federation or any of its and the conduct of its affairs shall be carried out in such a manner as to reflect the federal character of Nigeria and the need to promote national unity and also to command national loyalty, thereby ensuring that there shall be no predominance of persons from a few states or from a few ethnic or other sectional groups in that government or in any of its agencies (Section 14, Sub-section 3-4 Disregard for this Principle in some federal government appointments as well as perceptible imbalance in the distribution of federal amenities has created the loss of a sense of belonging in many parts of the country, hence the constant cries of marginalization, agitation for secession and calls for restructuring.

These and many more such problems are, in our opinion, grave matters that should be worrying all political leaders in our country today, rather than any bid for re-election.

Conclusion and Assurance of Prayers.

Our Church has always complemented the efforts of government in such areas as providing quality education and primary health care services to our people. We continue to make our contribution to nation-building through our prayers, admonitions and assistance to needy. Nigerians whenever we can. As the voice of the voiceless, we shall continue to highlight the plight of our people and play our prophetic role of sensitizing the government, thus promoting good governance, national unity and cohesion. We strongly feel that everybody in government at this moment has to take more decisive steps to restore the confidence of the Nigerian people in our governments. Our collective efforts must be seen in the desire to return to the fine principles of democracy, such as true federalism negotiation and consensus building, as means of achieving a more equitable distribution of the resources of our country and good governance.

Thank you, Excellency, for the audience and may God bless you.

Fayose visits Benue, Says “God will visit blood of victims of herdsmen killings on their killers, sponsors”

Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has said that God will visit the blood of the innocent people of Benue State and other States killed by suspected herdsmen on the killers and their sponsors, even as he reiterated his call for the restructuring of the country.

Benue state Governor, Samuel Ortom welcomes Ekiti state Governor, Ayodele Fayose to the state
The governor, who was speaking in Makurdi, the Benue State capital during his visit today, to commiserate with the State Governor, Samuel Ortom and the people of the State over killings by suspected herdsmen, declared support for the Benue State Anti-Grazing Law and urged the people of the State to stand by the law, adding that; “since the law is for the Benue people by the Benue government and not for residents of other States, there should not be any problem about its enforcement.”

His Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka said in a statement that Governor Fayose, who was accompanied by the Deputy Governor, Prof Kolapo Olusola, Chief of Staff; Chief Dipo Anisulowo, Chairman of the State House of Assembly Committee on Information; Dr Samuel Omotoso and others arrived at the Makurdi Airport at exactly 12:23pm and were received by Governor Ortom and other top functionaries of the State Government.

He visited the Genabe, Makurdi mass grave where the 73 persons killed by suspected Fulani herdsmen in Guma and Logo local government areas of Benue State, were buried. Prayers were offered for the repose of the souls of the victims by the Ekiti State Deputy Governor, Prof Kolapo Olusola.

Ekiti state governor, Ayodele Fayose with former Benue governor Gabriel Suswam during the former’s visit to Benue state
Governor Fayose also visited the former Governor of the State, Gabriel Suswan at his residence.

The governor urged the people of Benue State to be united in prayers, noting that “whosoever that is in government during the time of peace, posterity will remember him while those in powers when innocent people are being killed in the most barbaric manner will not be forgotten too.

He advised the people of Benue to “change vehicle since the present vehicle of change has broken down.”

Responding, Governor Ortom thanked Governor Fayose for visiting the State during its trying period.

He described restructuring of the country as the panacea to this present maladministration and open bias of the security agencies.

Governor Ortom said all cattle farmer in the State must embrace cattle ranching, declaring that “No retreat, no surrender on the total implementation of the State anti-grazing law.”

The governor chided the Police and the Minister of Defense for allowing called strangers to display arms openly and kill people. He insisted the relocation of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris was a ruse, saying “the IGP came just once and ran back to Abuja insulting me and dancing on the graves of the innocent people of Benue State.”

He reiterated his call for the IGP’s resignation, describing him as a bad influence on the President having turned himself to the mouthpiece and defender of the herdsmen.

He said the security agencies have allowed herdsmen to take over the business of kidnapping and killings and were being protected by the IGP

Politics2019: Tinubu can’t deliver bad product, PDP tells Presidency by engineerboat(op):
The Peoples Democratic Party has crticised the Presidency for allegedly abandoning its responsibility of governance but now concerned itself with the running of a political party.

It said that the Presidency was more concerned on how to return an obviously unpopular presidential candidate in 2019.

It said that the appointment of a former governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, as the leader of the All Progressives Congress Reconciliation Committee by the Presidency was wrong.

It added that Tinubu, who is also the national leader of the ruling party, could not deliver an unpopular presidential candidate in 2019.

The party said the Presidency had become so panicky that it had effectively hijacked the functions of the leadership of its alleged “dysfunctional and ideologically-vacuous All Progressives Congress,” by appointing people into partisan offices, outside the much-desired responsibility of governance.

The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, in a statement in Abuja on Thursday, said, “It is ludicrous that after almost three years of failure to deliver on its campaign promises, the Buhari Presidency is now moving around, cap in hand, looking for those to use once again to beguile Nigerians ahead of the 2019 elections.”

Ologbondiyan said that the Buhari Presidency had failed to be remorseful for its alleged misrule, noting that the disagreements in his (Buhari’s) party were fallouts of members’ resentment towards his desperation for power.

He said, “There is widespread disenchantment and indignation across the nation resulting from hunger and the inability of the Buhari Presidency to provide the people with basic necessities of life, which they had always enjoyed in the past.

“Nigerians are therefore waiting to see how Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, who has also openly expressed his concerns and disapprovals on the mismanagement of the economy and whose large constituents are direct victims of the ineptitude, impunity, nepotism, dictatorial tendencies, corruption and insecurity that have characterised the Buhari Presidency, will now turn around to preach that all is well and attempt to sell a practically bad product to the nation.

“It is instructive to further state that the desperate move by the Presidency to politically prey on individuals is mere foolhardiness and a totally decadent approach to pit key leaders against the people on an issue that has already been thrown overboard.

“This is more so as the political institutions and front runners that threw up the Buhari Presidency in 2015 have now, not only regretted their actions, but have also strongly advised that President Buhari should not contemplate contesting a second term in office.

“Nigerians today suffer from pains inflicted on them by this administration and no amount of manipulation of individuals and public institutions can make them change their resolve to vote out the APC in 2019, particularly as the party is stuck with an unpopular candidate.”

Ologbondiyan added that the PDP found the APC’s attempt to reconcile its dwindling ranks as laughable, cosmetic and politically inconsequential.

“It will interest the APC to know that Nigerians are already rallying with the repositioned and rebranded PDP as we are poised to present a credible, competent and reliable candidate through a free, fair and transparent presidential primary,” he added.

Responding, the APC asked the PDP to steer clear of its internal affairs.

The National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, said, “Why are they worried about the internal affairs of our party? If the spokesman for the PDP has nothing to say he should shut up, what’s their business with our reconciliation?

“Why are they concerned that we may not be able to achieve reconciliation? They should leave us alone. They should mind their business; we are ready to take them on issues of governance and policy that should be the focus of opposition not our internal affairs.”

PoliticsSome Leaders Don’t Understand Economics –obasanjo by engineerboat(op): 7:33am On Feb 07, 2018
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said it is unfortunate that many of the country’s leaders lack basic economic skills which he insists is one of the reasons why the country has not made much progress.

He said this, yesterday, at the 15th annual leadership symposium organised by the Center for Values in Leadership (CVL) in Lagos.

Obasanjo, who was the special guest of honour at the lecture, said even though he is optimistic about the country, it has become imperative that the country transitions to a popular movement, which would give the people a feeling that power is in their hands.

“The three ingredients of success are leadership, governance and development. Leaders should understand the world we live in; they should not live their lives in ignorance of what is happening around them.

“Any leader that wants to be successful must have a good knowledge of the economy but some of our leaders do not even understand what demand and supply, which is the most basic aspect of economics. In Nigeria, we are not there yet, but, we would be deceiving ourselves if we do not speak home truths.

“What are these home truths? The first is that diversity must be acknowledged and be appreciated. We should make diversity an asset and not a liability.

“The second is infrastructure and the basis of our development must be adequate provision of infrastructure. We should also be able to transition peacefully from one government to the other or one party to the other. We must transition to a popular movement and give the people the feeling that power is in their hands,” Obasanjo said.

The former president also added that security issues should not be emotional and, in any decision taken towards security, the changing times must be considered.

“You cannot use the security methods that were used in the colonial times and assume that it would be effective in the 21st century. Adapt modern security techniques and don’t say that it is not your culture. Culture is dynamic. It changes. When we ordered motorcycle riders to ensure they wear crash helmets for safety, the late Abubakar Rimi objected and said it was not their culture in the North to wear helmets. I responded by telling him that riding a motorcycle is not their culture, either; it is a western culture.

And, I also told him that if he wants to retain the cultural means of transportation in the North, then, everybody should be riding a donkey or a camel because motorcycles were invented by the West…”

PoliticsFalse Asset Charge: Saraki Closes Defence by engineerboat(op): 2:58am On Feb 07, 2018
The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has closed his defence after resuming for the continuation of his trial on false asset declaration on Tuesday.

Mr. Saraki returned to the tribunal on Tuesday to defend three of the 18-count charge of alleged false declaration of asset brought against him in 2015.

In December, he was ordered by the Appeal Court to return to the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, venue of the trial to defend the three charges.

At the continuation of the trial on Tuesday, Mr. Saraki’s lawyer, Paul Usoro, presented a single witness, who was a former commissioner of the Code of Conduct Bureau, Ademola Adegbo.

After introducing the witness, Mr. Usoro applied to admit Mr. Adegbo’s resume in court as evidence.

Mr. Edegbo was a commissioner and member of the board in 2015 when the case was first filed.

Reacting to the application for the submission of Mr. Adegbo’s resume, the prosecution counsel, Rotimi Jacobs, objected to the admissibility of the said document.

Mr. Jacobs said the resume intended to be admitted in evidence had no relationship with the three-count charge Mr. Saraki was asked to defend himself against.

In his response, however Mr. Usoro insisted that his client would like to tender the resume to demonstrate ”the degree of qualification obtained by the witness on the subject matter of the case.”

In a ruling, the tribunal chairman, Danladi Umar, admitted the document in evidence stressing that the resume ”would not constitute a problem for the prosecution.”

“Having listened to the submissions of counsel, I am of the opinion that the resume sought to be admitted is not an issue that should cause any contempt. I hereby admit that the resume is relevant and would not constitute any problem for the prosecution,” Mr. Umar said.

During the cross-examination of the defence witness, Mr. Jacobs asked a series of questions intended to show that the witness was ‘not constitutionally supposed to be occupying the office, as a CCB commissioner in 2015.”

According to Mr. Jacobs, Mr. Adegbo was legally supposed to have left office in 2015, having assumed the appointment as a commissioner of the bureau in 2010.

Reacting to a question put to him by Mr. Jacobs regarding the constitutionality of his stay in the office, Mr. Adegbo insisted that ”according to law, he was still a commissioner at the time.”

A drama ensued during the cross examination when a second member of the bench, Williams Atedze referred to Mr. Jacobs as; ‘You’.

Swiftly, Mr. Jacobs responded saying he was not a ‘you’ but that his name is ‘Rotimi Jacobs’.

Again, when Mr. Atedze attempted to address him during the heat of the questions and answers session, he (Atedze) asked Mr. Jacobs, ”to be careful.”

In a quick reaction, however the prosecution lawyer said: “I cannot be careful. I cannot be careful my lord! That shows that your lordship is intimidating me”.

Mr. Atedze then explained that the purpose of his warning was for the prosecution lawyer to avoid acting in a confrontational manner with the defence witness.

Subsequently, Mr. Jacobs agreed to be calm in his usage of language.

After a series of questions and answers, Mr. Usoro made two attempts to re-examine the witness on the things he said while responding to the questions asked by the prosecution counsel.

Both attempts were however objected to by Mr. Jacobs and the objections, upheld by the tribunal.

Subsequently, Mr. Saraki’s lead counsel approached the defendant for a short discussion.

When he returned to the bar, Mr. Kanu Agabi, a former Attorney General of the Federation told the court that his client (Saraki) does not intend to present any further witness. He therefore informed the court of their desire to close the defence.

The tribunal judge thus adjourned the matter till February 27 for adoption of addresses

Addressing journalists after the hearing, Mr. Usoro said the defence had intended presenting four witnesses, but decided to leave it at one, since they believed they would say what they had to say in their addresses.

“It is a matter of strategy. I think it is a dynamic strategy. You may decide in the cause of hearing your matter that you think you should change your strategy and simply close your case. Plenty of the things we want to ask the witness will come in the address,” said Mr. Usoro, a senior advocate of Nigeria.

In his opinion, however, Mr. Jacobs said the decision of the defence to close their case was at their discretion.

“It is at their discretion. The witness did not say anything about the charge. He did not contradict what we said. So I have nothing to bother myself about,” Mr. Jacobs said.

So Fayose matter can bring BMC crew out like this
PoliticsOLISAH METUH: Justice Abang A Disgrace To Nigeria Judiciary, Fayose by engineerboat(op):
Justice Abang a disgrace to Nigeria judiciary, he‘s acting as persecutor against Metuh - Fayose

Ekiti state Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has described the controversial Federal High Court Judge, Okon Abang, as a disgrace to the judiciary in Nigeria, saying that the judge was acting more like a persecutor in the case of former National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olisa Metuh, such that he ridiculed Nigeria by causing an accused to be brought to court on a stretcher.

The governor, who said it was clear that Justice Abang was out to satisfy the sinister aim of Metuh’s persecutors, said; “In saner climes, all that is needed as proof of inability to stand trial due to ill health is a doctor report from duly recognized health institution and one wonders whether medical report from federal government owned Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, Anambra State should not have been enough to convince Justice Abang that Metuh was indeed sick.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday, by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere OIayinka, Governor Fayose said; “Shame on Abang, a judge who goes to court robing himself in garment of corruption. Why didn’t he (Abang) dock Metuh with the stretcher on which he was brought to court yesterday despite all his initial bragging?

“The judge’s utterances during last month’s court appearance when he was told that Metuh was on admission and could not appear in court was a clear demonstration of malice and desperation to convict an accused person at all cost.

The governor said it was obvious that Justice Abang’s only aim was to satisfy the interest of those with evidence of his corrupt practices, adding that; “When they needed the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) Chairman, Danladi Umar to help them convict Senate President Bukola Saraki, they made the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to clear him of culpability in the N10 million bribery allegation levelled against him.

“In April 2016, the EFCC said via a letter signed by the Secretary of the Commission, Emmanuel Adegboyega Aremo that ‘after investigating the case for some time, it became clear that the whole allegation bordered in the realm of mere suspicion and would be difficult to charge the CCT judge to court based on the allegation.’

“Today, the same Umar that they cleared has been charged to court by the EFCC on the same allegation.

“Obviously, they intend to use the criminal charges filed against the CCT chairman to blackmail him into doing their sinister bidding of convicting Senator Saraki at all cost just as they are doing in the case of Metuh.

“On August 18, 2016, five Appeal Court justices in their judgment in the case of Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu Vs. Samson Ogah, said Justice Abang committed a rape on democracy!

“Also, a three-member panel of Appeal Court judges led by Justice Ibrahim Salauwa said the judgement delivered by Justice Abang on October 14, 2016 was as ‘fraudulent as it was violent’ and that the judge acted like Father Christmas.

“If not because of his ability to do hatchet jobs for those presently holding Nigeria at the jugular, how can a judge like Abang that has been adjudged severally as giving fraudulent judgments and acting like Father Christmas still sit in judgment over cases involving Nigerians?”

"We therefore call on the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen to do something on Abang to save the bench in the hand of judges like him.

try and state what both men discussed not cherry-picking in order to enlightened those that did not watch to understand and appreciate what has been discussed because solution is what everyone is looking
The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Jimoh Moshood has described Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State as ‘a drowning man’ that should not be engaged with issues.

Jimoh stated this when he and Ortom’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr Terver Akase, both featured as guests on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Tuesday.

Both men were speaking on the state of insecurity in the state while trading blames on each other on what may be perceived as lapses on either sides.

The State Government and the police authorities seem not to be on the same page on the latest killings that have sent many to their early graves.

While the police seem to have credited itself to having restored peace in the troubled state, the state, on the contrary, is calling for the immediate sack or resignation of the Inspector General of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris.

But responding, Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Jimoh Moshood called Governor Samuel Ortom a “drowning man.”

“And that is why we felt you don’t join issues with a drowning man,” he said in an apparent reference to the governor calling for the immediate resignation or sack of the IGP.

To the police spokesman, the call made by the state government seems not to have gone down well as he considered it an affront to the police boss and the entire police officers.

He added, “It is a great disservice to the Inspector General of Police and the entire Nigeria Police Force for the governor to call for his resignation, the governor should resign first.

“What he has said, the document presented to the Senate is for action by the Senate. And nobody can make any part or complete document public until the Senate makes a decision on it and passes a resolution.”

In his response, the governor’s spokesman wondered why the IGP should not resign when the police under his leadership had failed to secure lives and properties as enshrined in the Police Act.

Section 4 of the Police Act, he explained, is the duty of the police to protect lives and maintain law and order.

Akase, however, regretted a situation whereby the police would seek clearance from the authorities in Abuja before taken any decisive action.

Force Public Relation Officer, Jimoh Moshood, on Tuesday, attacked the personality of the Governor of Benue State, Mr. Samuel Ortom, by calling him a drowning governor, if he could watch his state degenerate to a lawlessness state.

He was reacting to the a press release by the government of Benue State that called the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris to resign, if couldn’t restore peace.

He made the statement February 6, 2018 on Sunrise Daily, a popular early morning show on Nigeria’s best TV station, Channels.

Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr. Terver Akase, who was on the hot seat maintained the stance of the government of Benue State that IGP Idris should resign, “the state commissioner of police takes orders from the IGP, if he couldn’t direct his men to maintain peace in the state, then he should resign.”

The CPS accused the police authority of supporting herdsmen killing in the state.

Akase’s statement angered Moshood, “the governor should be the one to resign because he’s a drowning man, who has failed to put measures in place to maintain law and order in his state.”

The show nearly degenerated to confrontation between Mr. Akase, and the police PRO, intervention of the host Abuja studios saved the situation.

The host advised the police PRO to withdraw such “a degrading” statement, but ‘indirectly’ failed to do, the host threatened to discontinue the interview, if both men failed to abide by the codes of conduct of the TV station.

Abusive and derogatory statements aren’t allowed on the best Channels TV.

At a time, a former Deputy Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Dr. Obadiah Mailafia, made a derogatory statement against the person of Mr. Ortom. He was mandated to withdraw his statement, which he did.

It’d be recalled that Benue State Government faulted the Inspector General of Police, over his comment that the recent attacks on farmers in the state was as a result of the implementation of the anti-open grazing law.

The state said it expected the police to be neutral in sensitive issue.

A statement by Mr. Akase expressed the disappointment of the state governor:

“We read statements credited to the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris as having blamed the recent killing of innocent Benue people by herdsmen on the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law of the state.

“We thought that the IGP was misquoted and expected the police authorities to issue a rebuttal to the reports hence our delay in responding swiftly.
Consequently, we have to respond to the erroneous impression which the reports have created.

“Indeed it was these unrelenting spate of attacks that prompted the people of the state to seek a permanent solution to the incessant clashes between farmers and herders hence the law for the establishment of ranches as the best method of animal husbandry across the globe.

“The law which has constitutional backing followed due process with the requisite public hearings and inputs from various stakeholders. The police authorities had ample opportunity to also make inputs while the process was ongoing. They however failed to do so.

“The unfortunate claim by the IGP indicates that some of those saddled with the responsibility of protecting and property and maintaining law and order have abdicated their duty and become accomplices with those undermining the very existence of the country.
This is unacceptable.

“If truly the IGP said what was widely reported by the media, our conclusion is that his is a clear case of a man who is either on a mission to mislead the nation or is complicit in the attacks on Benue communities and the killing of many people by terror herdsmen.

“The Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law of Benue State is certainly not the cause of the crisis as insinuated by the IGP. Mr Idris needs to be reminded that Fulani herdsmen attacked Benue State more than 50 times and killed scores of people before the law was enacted.

“The IGP should tell Nigerians if states like Adamawa, Zamfara, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Enugu, Edo, Plateau among others where armed herdsmen have killed hundreds of people also have anti-open grazing laws in place.

“It will be recalled that a few days after the killings took place and all fingers were pointed towards the direction of armed herdsmen, the IGP quickly rose in defence of the herdsmen and frankly tried to divert attention from the genocide being perpetrated by herdemen with a comment that it was a ‘mere communal clash’. Did he not know that there was a law in place in Benue State when he made that first statement?

“With his latest demand that the ranching law of Benue be suspended, it is now clear where the loyalty and interest of the Inspector General of Police lies – certainly not with innocent Nigerians. He has now positioned himself not only as the mouthpiece of those who are killing Benue people but indeed as their shield. Little wonder herdsmen still proudly carry out sophisticated weapons and willfully terrorize innocent people in the state without being arrested.

“We wish to place it on record that contrary to the directive by President Muhammadu Buhari that the Inspector General of Police should relocate to Benue to ensure that the killings stop, the IGP spent only one day in Benue and left for a destination where only he could tell. No one has seen him in Benue since that day.

“Nigerians must be told that contrary to the statement credited to the IGP, herdsmen are still killing people in Benue, so it will be wrong to say that enough security has been provided. At the last count after the mass burial of 73 victims of the attacks, about ten people have been killed in “Guma Local Government Area, one killed in Logo and many more receiving treatment in the hospital having suffered varying degrees of injuries with property worth millions of naira destroyed.

“Benue now has nearly 100, 000 displaced persons in seven camps established by the State Government. We therefore find IG Ibrahim Idris’ statement as mockery and a shameful dance on the graves of those killed in the state by herdsmen.

“The constitutional responsibility of the police is to maintain law and order and not to make or criticise same.

“That the IGP would have the audacity to blame a law made to ensure peace in the state and call for its repeal amounts to taking sides with lawless groups that gave notice to invade and carried out their threats.

“No wonder, the police ignored petitions for the arrest and prosecution of leaders of the Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, the masterminds of the current invasion and the attendant massacre.

“If the Inspector General of Police, Mr Idris is not competent to help bring an end to the invasion and killing of innocent people in Benue and other states by herdsmen, the noble thing to do is to resign instead of twisting facts to suit his objective.”

Carnage in Benue State have been going on for some time between herdsmen and Benue farmers, which has led to lost of lives and property worth millions of Naira.
