Exclusive Interview with Leon Balogun ‘We must win against South Africa and Cameroon’

Q: How would you describe your season with FC Mainz 05?

Balogun: This season for the club has been exciting, though there has been a lot of ups and downs but we are fighting to survive and escape relegation. I think from the last games we've played like those we played against Hertha (Berlin) and Bayern (Munich), we did our best and had fair results - a win against Hertha, and a draw against Bayern at the Allianz Arena. Playing in three different competitions really affected us: That is the Europa League, DFB Pokal and the League. I think we've managed through and we will did well to escape relegation. For me personally, the season could have been better. I would have loved to play more games but also you can see positive trend in the last games. I know its all about the team and if that means that I don't get too many games I certainly understand that, the main thing is for the team to stay in the Bundesliga.

[b]Q: Now to the Super Eagles, the team had a nice time in London in March. The next time the team will gather will be in France ahead of the game against South Africa. What are your thoughts about the camping in London and the game against South Africa?

Balogun: [/b]The camping in the UK was very nice. I think we have a lot of players playing in Europe and it was good we were able to use the time to bond; it really would help as we continue to blend. There wasn't too much stress for us, as it was near by and everyone could quickly assemble. Ahead of South Africa game, if we remain focused we have quality young players to beat any team in Africa.

Q: Let's talk about your partnership with Ekong, what do you think of it? And the camping in France, you think it is a nice idea?

Balogun: [/b]William is my brother and both of us have played a couple of games together and we have formed a good partnership on the field of play. Off the pitch, we are friends and that is having very positive impact on our game when we play together in the back-line for the Super Eagles. We know each other and we know what the other is thinking, that has helped our game a lot. On the choice of the the training camp in France, it is a beautiful idea by the NFF as it will be good to be together for 8-9 days before we leave for Uyo.

[b]Q: South Africa are our next opponents, but at the moment, they don't have a coach, what do you think?

Balogun: The thing is a coach guides a team, gives them idea on how to play and also presents a team that will play so it doesn't matter whether they have a coach or not, it's the players on the pitch that matters. They are the ones who will perform and show their quality on the field. Perhaps before we play them, they would have hired a coach who will still give them idea on how to play us so I think it will be an interesting game. I played against South Africa once before; I know they have quality players and it will be tough game. I expect a hard game against South Africa.

Q: Finally, two questions in one, what do you think about the game against Cameroon (it comes after South Africa) and then, what's your take about the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, where we've been playing our matches recently?

Balogun: About Cameroon, it's a crucial game and a home game we must win. At home we have everything under our control, we must use that to our advantage. Another advantage is Uyo, our current home ground. Uyo has become a fortress for us. I think it is one of the reasons for our successes in recent times. Uyo fans have shown so much love for the team and that has been very great. The ground is great and the training pitch is also good. And the Akwa Ibom State government has been very supportive of our cause. Cameroon is a strong team, after winning AFCON 2017 they've built up their confidence but by the time we will play them it would be six months after their win in Gabon, we must show them we want the win more than they do. We need to make sure we get the maximum three points to take our points’ tally to 9; that will give us a big edge over other teams including Cameroon. I'm seriously looking forward to the game; we want to show them that we are better than them. We are already dreaming of Russia 2018, but we know we must work harder. We will ensure we win all our matches especially our home games.

The Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has condemned the arrest and continued detention of former Governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Sule Lamido.

He warned the All Progressives Congress government to stop what he described as regime of harassment and intimidation of people perceived as having presidential ambition in 2019.

The governor in a statement issued in Ado Ekiti on Tuesday, and signed by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, called on the international community and the media to save democracy in Nigeria from being truncated by “the APC cabal’s desperation to hold on to power by whatever means.”

He added, “It appears that the cabal in the APC led government that is holding Nigerians to ransom want their candidate to contest the 2019 election unopposed. Obviously, that is the reason for the arrest and detention of former Governor of Niger State, Dr Babangida Aliyu and Alhaji Lamido who have shown interest in the presidency.”

Fayose described the police arrest and detention of Lamido as childish and ridiculous.

“If a former governor is arrested and incarcerated for what they called incitement, what should the police have done to those Fulani herdsmen that have killed thousands of Nigerians across the country?

“With the arrest of Alhaji Lamido, the detention of former Governor of Benue State, Gabriel Suswam, since February this year and the arrest and detention of Dr Babangida Aliyu, it is becoming clearer that these APC people will only contest election against themselves in 2019.

“It will even be unnecessary to continue to fund the Independent National Electoral Commission since they don’t want anyone to contest the 2019 presidential election against their party. The APC cabal can as well proscribe INEC and declare their party the perpetual ruler of Nigeria instead of wasting money on conduct of elections.”

While calling for a stop to the APC government’s regime of political intimidation and harassment, Fayose maintained that Nigerians would resist any attempt to foist a one party State on the country.

“No matter how tyrannical the APC chooses to become, Nigeria will overcome its tyranny just like the country survived past tyrannical governments.”

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, on Monday blamed the disruption and protest by workers at the May Day celebration in Abuja on factions in the Nigerian Labour Congress.

Ngige told newsmen on the sideline of the celebration that what happened was as result of infiltration by non-workers into the rally venue and not necessarily workers anger about minimum wage.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the event was disrupted for close to one hour by workers who barred government officials from delivering the speech from the Federal Government.
Ngige said the workers had no reason to be angry with the present administration because it had been very friendly with them.

Ngige said: “The Federal Government has been friendly to workers to the extent that it even went ahead and initiated the bailout fund.
“No government has done that before and that was because we did not want to lay off any worker.
“So what happened today is that some people who are not really workers infiltrated this arena and they started causing some problems.
“Be that as it may, we are going to address the issue of minimum wage, we are also going to address the issue of backlog of promotion areas and allowances of all sorts.

“We captured them in the 2016 budget but for some reasons the releases are not forthcoming but the president of the senate has assured us now.

“So we are going to capture them in the 2017 budget and once it’s captured in the appropriation, the minister of finance will handle the rest.”
Ngige insisted that the venue was infiltrated by non-workers due to some factionalisation within the labour federation, adding that the conclusion was reached based on intelligent report.

He said the issue of minimum wage was being delayed because the government employed what it called a tripartite negotiation also known as social dialogue so as to capture all sectors.
He said this was because the issue did not concern the government or public sector alone but also the private sector so it needed time to carry everybody along.

Ngige said: “We have finished the framework for the composition of the committee of the minimum wage and we have passed it round to government to source the requisite and qualified persons that will man this committee.
“We are going to address the issue of minimum wage; we are also going to address the issue of backlog of promotion arrears and allowances so workers should be patient and give us some time.
“Within the next quarter, the minimum wage committee will start functioning and in the next three months too backlog of all arrears and other allowances that are due to them will be paid.”

However, the President, Nigeria Labour Congress, Ayuba Wabba, and his counterpart, Trade Union Congress, Bobboi Kagama, said Nigerian workers had expressed anger and disappointment on the non-implementation of the minimum wage thereby disrupting the 2017 May Day celebration.
According to them, workers have today expressed their sadness, challenges, as many of them have not earn their salaries, so it is a demonstration of anger on the situation in the country.

Wabba said: “The challenges workers are passing through are enormous, workers have expected that either the President or the Vice President would have been present to respond to workers yearning and anticipation.
“Workers attitude today have shown that it is an accumulation of anger, and that the economic situation is biting very hard on them as many of them cannot pay their bills.”

Also, some workers who spoke with NAN believed that there was no infiltration of the venue by non-workers as claimed by the minister, but what played out was an accumulation of grievances against the government.
Asaba Lydia, a unionist of the Nigeria Civil Service Union, said the workers were taken for granted by the government thus the reason for sending representatives rather than coming themselves.

Lydia said the issue began with the minister’s act by sending the permanent secretary to represent him, while he represents the president, adding that it was not fair to the workers.

She said: “A day such as this, the government could not even honour workers by attending the event themselves.

“If the President is not available, what about the Vice President?

“We have tried to follow the norm as workers and it has not worked so now we are saying we are tired of failed promises, enough is enough.”
Dassey Heblom, a civil servant, said the workers refused to listen to the speeches of the government officials because every year it had always been stories without action or implementation.
Heblom said workers were now aware of what was going on and thus would not stop asking for their rights for policy statements to be made and implemented.

He said: “We are tired of talks, we want action, that is all we are saying, imagine we are even celebrating this day without salaries not to talk of the accumulation of unpaid allowances.”

I don't blame the workers. Before this administrion came on board nobody was talking about a gathering at the eagles square of this magntude. At least boko has been put to a check to that extent. It's a fact that things are more expensive than they were but I admire the fact that Ngige Chris and the Finance minister can boldly beat their chest in front of Labour and say the FG is not owing a single worker salary and Labour will not attempt to deny that fact. The same FG gave money to states and specifically said pay backog of saaries from 2010 till date. I take on the FG wen I have to and I hit them hard when I have to. On this one, the workers failed woefully. Engage the leadership constructively not by shouting " we no gree..we no gree" my post is for those who saw the madness at the eagles square. NB: There were a lot of kids there and parents gave them tremendous fear with their actions. Too bad.

The President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, Speaker, House of Reps, Yakubu Dogara, Minister of Employment, Labour and Productivity, Chris Ngige and other government functionaries, were publicly humiliated, on Monday, at the Eagle Square’s venue of this year’s May Day Celebration.

The event was disrupted for close to one hour by workers who barred government officials from delivering the speech from the federal government.

All attempts made by former Comrade Governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole couldn’t save the situation, as he was also stopped by workers who were chanting “we no go gree.”

Workers started throwing water cans to the officials when Police made attempts to drive them out of the podium.

Meanwhile, Police have brought armoured tanks and hot water Canon machines to disperse the rampaging workers.

The dignitaries were, however, smuggled out through the back door of the state box.

The online edition of his book, ‘Against The Run of Play‘ has been hacked by cuber-thieves who are currently distributing copies online and in the process deriving him of reward of his investment.

In a statement, the former CPS said he has received copies online and on WhatsApp. While empathising with those in Nollywood and musicians whose works have been attacked by pirates, he called on the Nigerian Government to do something to arrest the trend so as to guarantee rewards on investment on creative works.

“Meanwhile, I am aware that hackers have succeeded in breaking the code to the online edition of my book and are already circulating the book online. I have received it from different sources, even on WhatsApp.

“Though sad, it is a familiar story for me. in the case of my earlier book, Power, Politics and Death, it actually went viral on the day of presentation. so, that I enjoyed three days of grace this time around is a bonus for me.

“While I feel pained losing the revenue that accrued to me from online sales, I wrote the book because I believe it is an important story that should be documented and widely read. I have a feeling that this book will be widely read though to my expense and those of my publishers.

“But I am comforted by the fact that we are dispelling the myth that Nigerians do not read. It is our duty to write on what will interest them and present them in such ways they will find appealing”, he said of the book, Against the run of play.

A former governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Sule Lamido, has said that the dismal performance of the APC in the state will give the PDP upper hand in the forthcoming local government election in the state.

The Jigawa State Independent Electoral Commission has slated July 1 for the chairmanship and councillorship elections in all the local government areas of the state.

Lamido, a chieftain of the PDP, made the prediction at the weekend in Dutse while inaugurating a 68-member steering committee for the conduct of the election.

He explained that the election could have been what he described as a “push over,” if not because for the minus his party suffered recently as a result of defections of some members to the APC.

Lamido, however, said the council polls would still be an easy ride for them.

While assuring that PDP will not boycott the election, Lamido said they would henceforth be preoccupied with charting strategies to victory.

“All the flag bearers of our party were chosen without interference from any quarter and for this reason, all members of the party are expected to participate effectively during the election. I am optimistic the victory is ours,” he said.

Police arrest Lamido over alleged inciting statements

The former governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Sule Lamido was picked by the police at his residence in Sharada, Kano yesterday over the alleged incisive statements he made regarding the local government elections slated for July 1, 2017.

As at the time of filing this report Lamido was at the Zonal Investigation Bureau (ZIB) of the Zone One Headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) along Bayero University Road, Kano.

A source close to the police headquarters confirmed that they did not meet any resistance in their attempt to access the Bureau office.


The former governor was alleged to have urged his people to rise up against any arrangements to favour a particular political party in the forthcoming election in the state.
A former Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General in the then Lamido government was seen with other top functionaries of the Lamido era trying hard to secure the release of their boss.

However, the Special Adviser to Governor Muhammad Badaru Talamiz, Bello Zaki was also sighted at the Police headquarters.

A source close to government disclosed that Lamido’s alleged incisive statements caused embarrassment to the Jigawa State government, stressing that some of his utterances were said to have painted the incumbent governor in bad light, describing them as unprintable.

All efforts to reach the Police spokesman in the zone proved abortive as at the time of filing this report.

Did the police cart away Budget 2017 documents from the home of a senator?

That remained a knotty question yesterday.

The police denied that they took such documents during a raid on the Abuja home of Senator Danjuma Goje. The Senate said they did and that the budget could be delayed for that reason.
But, said the Senate yesterday in a statement, less than 24 hours after it demanded the immediate return of the documents, the police had complied with its directive.

Senate President Bukola Saraki’s office said the police returned all the documents, cash and laptop they took away from the house of the Chairman, Senate Committee on Appropriation.

Goje had, on Wednesday, told the Senate that policemen who raided his house on April 20 took away budget documents.

The Gombe Central lawmaker said besides 18 files, the police also took away his personal laptop where information on the budget was stored.

He said that N18 million, $19,000 and 4,000 Saudi Riyals were also taken away from his house by the police raiders.

The Senate resolved to ask the police to return the documents.

The Senate President also demanded an explanation of what informed the raid and an unreserved apology.

He constituted a seven-man committee to unravel the circumstances that led to the raid.

The Special Assistant to the Senate President on New Media, Bankole Omisore, said the police returned everything they took.

He said that the police claimed that they acted on wrong information by a whistle-blower.

Omisore twitted: “Nigerian police this morning returned every thing they took from Senator Goje’s house, including cash and documents relating to the 2017 Budget.

”They claim the raid was based on wrong information from a whistleblower.”

Also the Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Senator Ita Enang, in a statement entitled: “Resolution of issues: Re-Nigerian Police Force and Senator Danjuma Goje”, confirmed the items taken away from Goje’s home by the police have been returned.

A source close to Goje told our reporter that a deputy commissioner of police and some plain clothe officers returned the items early yesterday.

The police said the search warrant executed in Goje’s home had nothing to do with the budget.

The police searched Goje’s 10, Haile Salasie Street, Asokoro District, Abuja home, following an intelligence report.

Force spokesman CSP Jimoh Moshood, in a statement in Abuja, said the report that budget documents were taken away was false, misleading and capable of misinforming Nigerians.

He said that the search warrant was professionally executed.

”It is pertinent to set the record straight and inform Nigerians on the facts of the matter,”he said.

He said that on arrival of the Police team at Goje’s house, the house keeper, Ango Usman, informed him of the presence and mission of the team and he promised to come but later switched off his phone.

”The search warrant was successfully executed in the presence of three close relatives of Goje who reside in the house and the recoveries were made in their presence,”he said.

The relatives are: Danjuma Mohammed, Ango Usman, house keeper to Goje and Aisha Umar, a step daughter to Goje.

He said that the relatives opened the house, took the police team round the building, and endorsed their signatures after the completion of the search as required by law.

He said the items on the search warrant contained the money, documents and laptop recovered, and that none of the items included the budget document.

Moshood said the items recovered include: N18 million; 19,850 US dollars; 9, 400 Saudi Riyals; 38 files and six envelopes containing documents; file on funds spent on security administration and information gathering in 2009.

Others are: file on release of fund for special operations in 2009;file on Gombe State Government cash inflow, 2005; file on Project 2007 and executive briefs on how to fight opposition in Gombe State, Strategies and tactics.

He said there were also envelopes containing permit to operate as an oil industry service company (special categories) 2011; file containing write-ups on how a former governor plotted the assassination of Sheikh Jafaru and letters from Mohammed Goje to the MD, LUBELL Nigeria Ltd. of proposed residential development at Kashere Phase II dated Jan. 1, 2007 and Nov.19, 2010.

The spokesman said that there was no document relating to the 2017 Budget sighted or removed by the Pplice team.

He said that the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris, honoured the invitation of the National Assembly to explain the legality of the search warrant in Goje’s house.

Moshood said that further investigation was ongoing into the matter, adding that police actions were in line with the provisions of Sec. 4 and 28 of the Police Act and Regulations.

”The Nigeria Police Force sees the report in the media credited to Sen. Danjuma Goje as a deliberate distraction to cast aspersion on police investigation to pervert the end of justice,”he said.

He implored the public to disregard the report as the search warrant was professionally executed.

Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) on Tuesday withdrew a motion before a Federal High Court Lagos for stay of execution of a judgment which unfroze the account of a former first lady, Patience Jonathan.

Justice Mojisola Olatoregun had on April 6 unfreeze the account after Jonathan’s lawyer, Mr Ifedayo Adedipe (SAN), challenged the propriety of EFCC’s action.

He had challenged the commission for joining her in a suit, which he said, she was not a party to, and urged the court to unfreeze Jonathan’s account.



Dissatisfied with the unfreezing order, EFCC had filed an application for a stay of execution of the order as well as a notice of appeal challenging the judgment.

The two applications, according to EFCC counsel, Mr Rotimi Oyedepo, were dated April 6 and filed on April 7.

At the resumed hearing of the case on Tuesday, Oyedepo informed the court of his agency’s intention to withdraw the two applications.

He did not give reasons for the withdrawal.

Following the withdrawal of the applications, Adedipe confirmed service of the application for withdrawal on the defendants.

He equally informed the court of his intention to withdraw Form 48 (notice of Committal to prison) and Form 49 (Committal to prison), which he said, was filed against Skye Bank in anticipation of a failure to obey the order of the court.

After the submissions of both counsel, Olatoregun granted the withdrawal of both the EFCC’s two applications and Patience Jonathan’s Form 48 and Form 49 respectively.

Olatoregun had in 2016 following the application of EFCC, ordered that the account of the former first lady which housed the sum of about 5.8 million dollars be frozen on the grounds that the money was suspected to be proceeds of a crime.

Also affected by the order were five liability companies habouring a total sum of N7.4 billion.

The five companies are Finchley Top Homes Ltd, Aribawa Aruera, Magel Resort Ltd, AM -PM Global Network Ltd, Pansy Oil and Gas Ltd. Also, affected was an account belonging to one Esther Oba having the sum of 429,000 dollars.

The freezing order was sequel to a further and better affidavit in support of an ex-parte originating summons deposed to by Abdulahi Tukur, an investigating officer of the EFCC.

Tukur had averred that there was urgent need for the court to direct the managers of the bank accounts contained in the schedule to in the interim forfeit the money contained to prevent further dissipation.

While granting the freezing order, the judge had ordered the anti -graft agency to file an undertaking as to damages if it turned out that the order should not have been made.
