Politics"It's My Ghost": Governor Yahaya Bello Reacts To Voter's’ Registration Scandal by engineerboat(op): 7:44pm On Jun 05, 2017
Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello’s name has disappeared from the voters’ register after being accused of double registration.

Bello’s name has been delisted, but the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has a photograph showing how he was registered at the Government House, Lokoja.

The commission has raised an investigative committee to unravel the “mystery surrounding the alleged double registration by the governor”.

INEC alleged that the governor first registered in Abuja in January 2011 and reregistered on May 23, 2017 at the Government House, Lokoja.

But the governor on Friday said his ghost might have been registered by INEC because he was away in Dubai when he was said to have registered again.

As INEC tried to ascertain the true position of the governor’s registration status, a fresh problem has cropped up.

It was learned that INEC established that some of its staff were deployed in the Government House for Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) of the governor. The state has denied that it took place.

It was gathered that although the commission had the photograph of the governor’s registration, it could not trace any Yahaya Bello on its CVR list for May 23, 2017.

A source, who spoke in confidence said: “The INEC management has raised an investigative team to look at the controversy over the allegation of double registration by the governor.

“It is, however, curious that the investigation has assumed a new dimension. The commission has the photograph of the registration of the governor but his name is not on the list of the CVR for that day in question. The name has disappeared.”

INEC is probing the following issues:

Was there any CVR on May 23 at the Government House, Lokoja?
Who was registered?
How did the INEC team come about the photograph of the registration showing the governor?
How was the name of the registrant (Yahaya Bello) de-listed from the INEC register? and
Who were those behind the de-listing?

“Certainly, it is now our words against the governor. This is a mystery we need to unravel. The governor said our team might have registered his ghost. The onus is on us to present the evidence, including our register,” the source said, adding:

“But we got information before we issued an official statement on the governor’s double registration.

“INEC is suspecting foul play by some of its staff. We hope they are not dragging the commission into the dirty politics of Kogi State again.

“If we are able to establish any shady deals, those concerned will be sanctioned. They may be dismissed from service.”

INEC, speaking through its National Commissioner and chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC), Prince Solomon Soyebi, first raised the alarm over the governor’s alleged double registration.

He said: “It has come to the attention of INEC that Governor Bello of Kogi State registered as a voter for the second time on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 in Government House, Lokoja, the state capital.

”His first registration was on January 30, 2011 in Wuse Zone 4, Abuja.

”The governor’s double registration and doing so outside lNEC’s designated centres are both illegal.

”We wish to make it clear that no INEC staff was authorised by the commission to re-register him or any citizen or to do so outside our designated CVR centres.”

Speaking after praying at the Presidential Villa mosque on Friday, Bello said: “I travelled on 19th to Dubai for a brief break and I saw the press release and I was taken aback, that I did double registration on 23rd.

“Probably it is my ghost that has done the double registration.”

PoliticsJubilation across Ekiti as Fayose, oil marketers reach truce by engineerboat(op): 8:08pm On Jun 04, 2017
Wild jubilation followed the end to a three week war between Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose and oil marketers in the state as the two parties reached pact and sheath swords after a peace meeting brokered by Governor of Osun State, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola at the government House in Oshogbo yesterday evening.

Preamble
Following disputations on modalities for establishing and operating filling stations in Ekiti State between the government and independent oil marketers which led to face off culminating in the suspension of the lifting and sale of petroleum products in Ekiti State, a reconciliatory meeting held today June 4, 2017, at the Government House, Osogbo, resolved as follows:

PoliticsLai: Why This Government Flouts Court Orders by engineerboat(op): 8:30am On Jun 03, 2017
Lai Mohammed, minister of information and culture, has explained why the government of President Muhammadu Buhari flouts court orders.

Speaking in an interview with Osasu Igbinedion on The Osasu Show, Mohammed said the government disregards some court orders in the interest of national security.

The lawyer also said the judiciary does not have the “entire picture” on some cases at hand and it was the responsibility of government to balance human rights and national security.

When asked why the government continually flouts court rulings on the release of Sambo Dasuki, former national security adviser (NSA) and Ibrahim El Zakzaky, Lai said: “Every government will balance national security with human rights; every country in the world. It is the level of the balancing.

“As a government, I will balance national security against human rights; and then I will take a decision. Because there is security, there is stability, that the courts also exist.

“What I am saying (is) that the court has ruled but the court does not have the entire picture when it comes to national security. I am a lawyer too, therefore I have utmost respect for the judiciary.”

Mohammed however added that Nigerians cannot “pick one or two cases” and conclude that Buhari runs a government of impunity.

“You can’t pick two, three cases which border on national security to condemn a whole government and say this government is a government of impunity,” he added.

“How many cases are determined daily in Nigeria? I still say every government has that right to balance national security.”

On the health of Buhari, Mohammed said he last spoke to the president the day he travelled, but other ministers had spoken to him afterwards “and they know the president is fine”.

PoliticsWe Are Teaching Chibok Girls To Speak Good English – Aisha Alhassan by engineerboat(op): 8:28am On May 31, 2017
The Federal Government says it has begun teaching the rescued Chibok schoolgirls how to speak proper English.

The government has also employed 20 teachers to help the girls with remedial classes.

The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Aisha Alhassan, said this in Abuja on Tuesday while receiving the recently rescued 82 Chibok schoolgirls.

At least 219 girls were kidnapped in April 2014 from Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, where most of them were preparing to sit for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination.

About 24 were released in 2016 while another 82 were released by the Boko Haram terrorists, who abducted them over three years ago, on May 6, 2017.

After their rescue on May 6, 2017, the 82 girls were kept in a health facility under the supervision of the Department of State Services, where they underwent medical tests and treatment.

While receiving the 82 girls at the National Centre for Women Development, the minister said the 82 girls would be taught English.

Alhassan said the 24 girls, who were released last year, had improved on their spoken English.

The minister stated, “I thank the teachers and vocational trainers for training them. The 24 girls who could not speak good English, can now speak good English and I am sure by the time they handle the new ones (82), they will also speak good English and will be able to pass JAMB, WASSCE and NECO when they go back to school.”

The minister said by September, the rehabilitation of all the girls would have been completed and they would be enrolled in school.

She said since the girls had missed three years of school, they would need to take remedial classes.

Alhassan added, “We are going to keep them till the school year starts in September. Dr. Anne (Okoroafor) said they are both medically and psychologically stable. The therapy will go on for four months till September when they will be enrolled in school. “Therefore, the programme will last from now till September when they would be in school. By then, they would have overcome the trauma.”

A reliable government source told our correspondent that due to the poor academic foundation of the girls, some of them might have to return to junior secondary school.

The minister, who conducted journalists on a tour of the hostel where the girls will reside, said the girls would be taught handcrafts, including sewing and baking.

Alhassan stated that some of the girls had learnt how to bake cakes and some of their products had been sold.

She said the girls would be taught skilled and semi-skilled labour so that they would be able to compete with their peers in the outside world.

The minister denied allegations that the girls were being held against their will, adding that the girls and their parents consented to the arrangements.

The UNFPA’s Deputy Representative in Nigeria, Mr. Eugene Kongnyuy, commended the Federal Government for the rescue of the girls, saying the agency would continue to support the Federal Government.

Speaking with our correspondent on the sidelines of the event, Kongnyuy said the United States President, Donald Trump, had cut funding to the agency which had already hurt their ability to help kidnapped women and girls recover after being freed from Boko Haram.

He, however, said some other countries like Canada had increased donations which would help reduce the effect.

PoliticsResign If You Love Nigeria; Fayose Tells Buhari by engineerboat(op): 5:39pm On May 30, 2017
‎Resign if you love Nigeria, Fayose tells Buhari

Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to resign if he truly loves the country, as ill-heath is not allowing the President to effectively discharge his constitutional duties.

Fayose, who ad‎dressed newsmen in Lagos on Tuesday, said being an avowed corruption fighter, Buhari is now under moral burden to save Nigeria from needless stagnation arising from his heath challenges that have impacted negatively on his performance.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Idowu Adelusi, the governor said fighting corruption was not limited to ‎discovering large sums of money here and there, but doing the right thing at the right time.

He opined that taking a bow when necessary was also an indication of being morally upright.
The governor, who appraised the two years of the Buhari administration, said the All Progressives Congress-led Federal Government had failed to deliver on its promises.

‎"So far, the APC-led Federal Government has been a government of misadventure and Nigerians are worse for it. They say they are fighting corruption but are shielding  corrupt elements within their fold.
Members of the  opposition defect to the APC for protection‎. Fighting corruption is more than discovering huge sums of money all over the place, with nobody being traced to be the owners, moral corruption too is bad.

‎"He can do us the great help by resign‎ing. Not resigning bothers on his integrity.‎ His absence allows others to suppress and oppress others and that means he is allowing others ‎ to suppress their fellow human beings. There are many governments in one and they are clueless. We need an active president going by our numerous challenges. How long will Nigerians wait for an incapacitated president‎,"?

‎"We cannot wait again for somebody to hold us to ransom.‎ I don't have any bad blood against Buhari,
Osinbajo has no powers without the president. He owes us the duty to tell us the state ‎of his health," the governor said.

On the performance of the economy, Fayose said it had gone from bad to worse.
He noted that the middle class had been wiped off.

‎"There is no middle class any more. Economic indicators are not cherry at last. They borrow money on daily basis and committing funds that ought to accrue to all tiers of government to servicing the loans," he added.

On the much-touted rescue of Chibok girls. Fayose reiterated that the whole set up was a blackmail against former President Goodluck Jonathan, adding that one day, the true story would be revealed.
On insecurity in Nigeria, Fayose said more people had been killed by insurgents and herdsmen than in any other period in the history of Nigeria.

He wondered why no Fulani herdsmen had been arrested and prosecuted despite the atrocities perpetrated across the country".
