Without Rule of Law, There Cannot Be Rule At All. Today, I am in extreme anguish of spirit having watched the unfortunate drama that played itself out at the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, in which agents of the state caused a commotion in court in order to frustrate a judgment of a court of competent authority. Never in the history of Nigerian democracy has a judge been treated in such a disdainful and brazen attack on not just her person and office, but on the entire judiciary. This is unacceptable. It is a rape on the sanctity of the court. Nigeria is not a dictatorship. We are a democracy, no matter how inconvenient this fact is to the powers that have forced themselves on us. I call for an immediate inquiry to be set up to identify those responsible for the maltreatment meted out to Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu and the desecration of her court, and indeed the Nigerian judiciary. They must be sanctioned to the highest extent permissible by our laws. I further call for all law enforcement agencies in Nigeria to immediately respect not just the court order made by Justice Ojukwu, but the order of any court in Nigeria, on any detainee, be it Omoyele Sowore, Sambo Dasuki or Ibrahim Zakzaky, among others. We cannot have a situation where our government is quick to obey foreign court orders and even quicker to disobey domestic court orders. This is symptomatic of a mindset that is servile to foreign powers and brutal to Nigerians. Without the rule of law, there can be no rule at all. Power in Nigeria still flows from the people, not from the barrel of a gun. I call on all men and women of goodwill not to keep quiet or sit on the fence at times like this. To keep Nigeria a democracy is the paramount duty of all concerned stakeholders. Please speak up against this tyranny and side with the Nigerian people. Signed: Atiku Abubakar Vice President of Nigeria, 1999-2007.

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Tanko Muhammad, has cautioned judges of superior courts in Nigeria to desist from using technicalities to hinder justice delivery. Muhammad gave the advice on Monday in Abuja in an address at the opening of the 2019 All Nigeria Judges’ Conference of Superior Courts holding at the National Judicial Institute. The theme of the conference is “Sustaining Democracy through Effective and Efficient Administration of Justice’’. He said that there was a need for judges to redouble their standards in the process of discharging adjudicatory functions in order to sustain public confidence. “In order to sustain public confidence in the judiciary, judges must continue to be proactive by not allowing technicalities to stand in the way of substantive justice.’’ He noted that relying on technicalities in justice dispensation contributed in the delay of justice delivery. “Technicalities in itself sometimes constitute unreasonable delay in dispensing with cases. “Timely disposition of cases in our courts will in no small measure shore up public confidence in the judiciary,’’ Muhammad said. He added that delay in justice delivery and the volume of cases on the dockets of courts still left much to be desired. He, however, said that urgent reforms were being put in place to take care of the challenges. “In our desire to curb the delay in justice delivery, we have automated the Nigerian judiciary and developed and deployed the Nigerian Case Management System (N CMS) software,’’ Muhammad said. He solicited the support and cooperation of judges for the reform aimed at impacting positively on the country’s justice delivery system. Retired Justice Rosaline Bozimo, the Administrator of the National Judicial Institute, said the theme of the conference was timely and apt, considering the role of the judiciary in the ‘s legal system. “The theme of this year’s conference is apt and topical as judicial integrity and rule of law are the underlying principles of justice and the bedrock of democracy,’’ Bozimo said. https://www.pulse.ng/news/local/cjn-cautions-judges-against-using-technicalities-to-hinder-justice-delivery/

The Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has said the helicopter sighted dropping teargas during last Saturday’s governorship election in Kogi state was deployed for crimes prevention purpose. Adamu, who said this while briefing journalists after a meeting of Service Chiefs with President Muhammadu Buhari, on Tuesday added that the helicopter which was on patrol had to intervene to stop those fighting and snatching ballot boxes. He said the police prepared heavily for the elections in Kogi and Bayelsa states because the outcome of its security trend assessment had revealed that there would be violence in the two states. ejimatic:Who ever wants to win election must be ready to work for it. It high time electorate determines who governs them not by thuggery, ballot snatching. Nigeria can do. Now it's the time to call for electoral reform. Parties affiliations aside. Everything in Nigeria is tending to na turn by turn. |
ejimatic:As much as it is good for all sitting governors to sit up and do the right thing. Nigeria need Electoral reforms. The sign of things to come does not look good at all |
