The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja has dismissed an appeal by the Allied Peoples Movement, APM, seeking to disqualify Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, from the February 25 general election.



In the appeal marked: CA/ABJ/CV/1414/2022, the Movement had approached the court, contending that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, ought not to have recognized Peter Obi as a valid candidate for the presidential poll.



APM said this was in consideration of the time Obi defected from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the LP.







The party argued that the period of Obi’s defection for the purpose of contesting the presidential election was in violation of sections 77(2) and (3) of the Electoral Act, 2022.



They also argued that before Obi’s defection, the LP already sent a list of its registered members to the INEC.





According to the appellant, Obi lacked the right to be recognized as the LP flagbearer because his name was not on the list of the party members that was submitted to INEC.



APM further urged the court to set aside the Federal High Court judgment which dismissed the suit it filed to challenge Obi’s candidacy.



In a unanimous decision by a three-member panel of Justices, the appellate court said there was no merit in the appeal filed by APM.

Point of correction. Inec will do screening first and verify what you submitted.it is their failure if they didn't do so. I think there should be punishment attached to it Incase inec fails

I have read it in INEC regulations and electoral law. It is not the job of INEC to verify certificates and facts of the eligibility of a candidate. The candidates just need to make statements of facts which confirm their eligibility. It is the job of opposition to challenge such facts in court.

How is not suing Atiku and PDP pre election matter? How is the absence of Mr Obi's name on the register as at the deadline pre-election matter? Even if there is a waiver , it must be submitted even before the primaries and acknowledged by INEC and accompany his petition but Mr Obi resigned from PDP on May 27, joined LP on May 28 and primary held on May 30 while he was not yet a member of LP.

It is the legality of his membership and participation which he is using to file a petition so if he has no locus standi the courts have no basis wasting its time!

You don’t know the precedence set in law. Read the Bayelsa and Zamfara governorship petition cases to know that opposition can seek disqualification of aspirants because they are contesting against opposing parties, not within themselves as party.

The Federal Government is poised to enhance mental health in the South East with the establishment of 15 outposts in the five states of the zone.

Medical Director of the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Enugu, Monday Igwe, disclosed this at a press briefing shortly after he resumed office following his re-appointment by President Muhammadu Buhari for a second term of four years.

He explained the outposts would be located in each of the senatorial districts, noting that the essence was to make access to mental health services easier for the people of the zone.

He disclosed nine out of the 15 proposed outposts had been completed and equipped and would be operational soonest with ambulances readily available to convey patients to Enugu in major cases.

Igwe said: “This hospital is the only psychiatric facility in the entire South East region. It is also the only facility that is made to train doctors and nurses in psychiatry. It is also the only facility that offers research in terms of mental health in the South East. It is also our mandate to give clinical services to people that have mental illnesses.

“The hospital also is available for the people of South South and some parts of North Central region of the country. So, if we don’t do well, we will be leaving Nigerians to suffer. That’s why we want to make this place to be the best and centre of excellence in mental health practice.

“There are a number of ways to actualise this. Since many people live very far away from Enugu State, we want to make sure our 15 newly built outposts in South East are operational.

“We have ensured each of the 15 senatorial districts in the South East has one outpost. We have successfully completed and equipped nine of the outposts while the rest are still ongoing.

“Those ones we have completed are going to be activated. We are going to post our staff there.”

The medical director received a rousing welcome from staff of the hospital, where he thanked the president for finding him worthy of another tenure in office.

Igwe took over a fractured health institution four years ago and has made efforts to restore the lost glory of the hospital.
