They both have defensive duties but McTom has more license to move forward. This is obvious to everyone. I don't understand what you are arguing about.
When we play Matic and Fred, Matic stays back and Fred has more license but it does not mean Fred has no defensive responsibilities.

If you watch our games and you think McTom has no defensive responsibility i am happy for you.

I don't see many teams out there if they even exist at all who don't have this same set up. Even the Partey/Ndidi don't sit alone without a second midfielder that must drop back to assist in the defensive duties.

Those 2 are doing one man’s duty. They combine to do the defensive duties of a CDM but struggle to carry out his creative duties.

In terms of the passing discrepancy it is a difference of 20 passes over the whole season but McTom makes up with the gap in terms of goals scored.

The truth is they are both not good enough for our goals and objectives. At least not as regular starters. They should both be squad rotation players.

Looking at EPL site, I see a difference of 300+ passes.

Scoring goals does not make up for anything if we claim they both have defensive duties of a CDM and our defense still find it difficult to handle some basic pressure or beat the press. Maybe Tom isn't on defensive duties as we think since his goals is what we have to point to every time

Fred plays deeper and McTominay plays more advanced so Fred should normally have more passes cos he is the one meant to dictate play while McTominay does the forward running.

Having said that McTominay sometimes hides from passes in difficult areas because he doesn't trust his own technique while Fred sometimes makes himself available for passes he should not be making himself available for because he overrates his own technique.

It has reduced recently. It is because he trusts that if he can get a shot off the keeper would be in trouble. He is now learning not to force things . He played very well in this last game. He, Shaw, Bruno, Maguire were our best players yesterday. He linked up the play very well against those giants in the crowded West Ham defense, created chances for others and was unlucky not to have scored hitting the post twice.
Imagine having a pass accuracy of 94.6% with 2 key passes as a striker in that crowded area..

He showed trust in Amad by playing him for 45 mins against Milan. Ole needs to tweak the formation. Play 3-4-1-2, Telles will perform better as a LWB and Greenwood and Rashford will play better as split CFs.
