Spy360: The comparison is not about whether Emery is better than Pep.
It's about the difficulty each faced in changing the fortunes of their teams.
Pep had money, something Emery doesn't.
Money make things easier. I am not even arguing about their coaching. I am challenging the talk that the team Pep inherited was significantly better than what Wenger left Unai. City have spending money, yes..but that does not mean Unai has nothing. It is just not true. You saw me listing out how much Wenger coughed out and was willing to. |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: Arsenal Fans Thread: The Red & White Army: 2025/2026 EPL Champions! by Eruditor: 4:05am On Dec 08, 2018 |
KevinDein: Yes, that same squad.
He inherited a squad that had De Bruyne, David Silva, Fernandinho, Aguero and 50 million pounds Sterling as the core and then spent a couple of hundreds of millions to strengthen it. That squad won the league just 2 seasons earlier. Compare that to the Arsenal squad which just finished a distant 6th last season and has the mentally weak and inconsistent Ozil and Mhiki, the error prone Mustafi and Xhaka, the out of form and inexperience Iwobi and Bellerin. Only Aubameyang and Lacazette can be said to be really great players.
The squad Pep inherited from Pellegrini is so much better than the one Wenger handed to Emery is not even a joke.
(Pep/city fans should stop seeing my post as a dig at Pep. It's more to put the good work Emery has done at Arsenal in perspective) Revisionism dey sweet ehn. KDB was played out of position. Silva, brilliant but never producing this amount of output that we currently see. Fernandinho, good, but Wilshere and co ran circles round him just before Pep. Let me add, Ozil was 42M, Mhiki 35M, Xhaka 35M. Not to add Auba and Laca who both cost 115M. Wenger tried to pay 92M for lemar (money was not his problem). He even tried to get Mbappe. As for Bellerin, LOL. Pep would have taken Bellerin over Sagna and Zabaleta. Even over Danilo. Nacho and Kolasinac will start over Gael Clichy. Pep is playing Zinchenko and Delph as LBs FFS. I dedicated one paragraph to talk about Raheem-inefficient-5-goals-a season-misses-big-chances-Sterling. Iwobi today is Raheem when Pep came. Potential. You guys make up reality as you go. I can pick 4 players in this side that will still play for City today. Of course, Pep's present squad is better than the one Unai Emery inherited. But the quality of teams both inherited? fa fa foul. You are using their present form to judge who they were then. 2 seasons ago is a long time in football. Ask Alexis. That City squad went 1- 2- 4 before Pep. |

KevinDein: First 15 games
Pep; 30 points Klopp; 23 points
Emery; 31 points.
Mind you, Pep inherited a much better team than Emery did. I'm not in anyway implying that Emery is better, just stressing what an awesome job he's done so far.
You can point to the fact that Arsenal is still 5th despite the impressive run (in reality they are on same point as 4th, only 2 point behind 3rd and would most likely be higher this weekend when Chelsea get mauled by Man city ), however this is testament to how competitive the top 5 is. I mean, Liverpool are having their best start in their history and they are still 2nd .
Right now, the EPL is actually divided into 4 tiers;
Tier 1: Man city and Liverpool (title challengers)
Tier 2: Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea (battling for the 2 remaining Champions League spots)
Tier 3: Everton, Bournemouth, Leicester, Man Utd (battling to be the best of the rest and a Europa league spot)
Tier 4: The rest (fighting for survival)
Quite impressive how Emery has managed to get us into this position and I'm very optimistic he'll do so much more when he gets his own players. Much better squad indeed. The squad that finished 4th behind Wenger's 2nd and equal points with United in 5th? The one Leicester, Tottenham, United and Arsenal even West Ham took turns to beat almost home and away for all teams above? Kompany out. Zaba, Sagna, Clichy, Mangala, Fernando that same squad or another one? The same squad with 63points only '3' shy off the '66' points team Pep inherited is the one his was much better than? Lol Okay o. |

Compare this Chelsea team to his, there lies your answer.
Stop defending what's obvious. He wanted Jorginho you guys got him because you paid more. His most expensive signing is Laporte 60M(who came in January when City were sure to win the league). You already had a 70M Morata. Mendy his expensive LB has barely played since last season. This season KDB his best player has been out. Bakayoko cost more than Gabriel Jesus. Drinkwater cost more than Danilo etc etc City do not have more financial power than CFC. He is just better at picking the right players and making them better. Simple. |

Roland17: Dayo, I have clarified my position about Pep and his EPL domination as there is nothing left in that pot for me. I don't think City moved on from M. Pellegrini who also won the EPL, I might add to Pep to just win the EPL. They have expectations that he can lead them to capture the UCL which in my thoughts would be great for the EPL because again, most know how I feel about that. Pep saw a better financial situation with City in comparison to Bayern to achieve his goal to not only dominate the EPL but to also win the UCL with a different team. No he did not see any better financial situation. Manchester United could have purchased the same players. PSG have the same financial power. One team was more desperate to have him and prepared way ahead for him. KDB for e.g was a player we would find out later City purchased at the behest of Pep who wanted him at Bayern but Bayern were unwilling to cough out the 50+ million that Wolfsburg asked for. Sané was another player he wanted at Bayern. |

airmark: Fraudiola kicked out Hart and bought Bravo. After failing in his first attempt in epl, unlike what he did in burnthisleaguedown and LA liga, he went to town to buy Ederson for 40m+. I can't list coaches that enjoyed such support only to win epl that his predecessors won. Have you ever wondered why City purchased Ederson without flinching? Well, news filtered through that Pep actually wanted Ter Stegen but Barca refused (even though at the time he was on the bench for the most part). When that transaction failed and the transfer window was closing, City went for Bravo (they had to, the only other keeper they had was Willy Caballero). So Bravo's failures only meant City still needed a keeper and they opted for Pep's second choice - the same player he had praised when Bayern thrashed Benfica years back. As for your UCL bla bla, that is a changed narrative. City hierarchy had always said league dominance was their first target and the UCL a long term project. Shebi Rafa Benitez won one with Liverpool? What happened after that? Ancelloti in Madrid nko? RDM? |

Fkhalifa: Which mentality? quality depth in squad and Pep can have different players for diff competition. It isn't the same for others, when the season starts to give players fatigue, pep introduced Bernardo from his squad and both another 50M defender. how many can afford this? Leicester happens once in a life time,Conte had the advantage of not playing in Europe.
Mancini,pellegrini all won,so what's special?
Moyes was Europa at best,he never got to top 4, poch's played more in Europe.
Poch has proved himself to be a top class manager, the likes of Madrid were after him, either he wins or not wouldn't change Jack, those who understands footy knows this. Klopp may win or not,but deep down good pundits would rate him.
The only thing I respect about pep,is his ability to retain that player style wherever he is Pep does not need your endorsement but I would not stop exposing some of the tomfoolery people display here as logical reasoning. A man starts his career transforming a failing stock Apple company into a trillion dollar portfolio business and some quasi-analyst somewhere says he must transform a kiosk in Igando to prove he is a good CEO. lol. Now Poch is trying for having one of the best teams in England yet winning nothing, but when Pep won everything with Barca he needed to go to Aston Villa to prove himself. Do you people even read what you type? What is special in 100pts to Mancini's 89 or Pellegrini's 87? what is special in 32 wins in one EPL season? 18 consecutive wins? The most EPL goals? The best goal difference? The largest margin between first and second? The quickest time to securing the league? The most away points in the EPL? |

KevinDein: Interesting arguments from both sides. But history has shown that Pep only wins trophy when he has by far the best team/squad in a competition. He has never won a trophy with an underdog or even a team that is just about equal with the other rivals. Mourinho (I hate the man) has done it with Porto and Inter.
Pep won the Champions League with Barcelona because he had the greatest player of all time at his peak playing for him. Along with two supremely talented midfielders, all in their peaks, who would be mentioned amongst the greats in the future. He was handed a treble winning Bayern team but couldn't win the champions league on three occasions. Obviously because he kept coming across equal or slightly better teams.
Pelegrini handed him a title winning Man city team that was expensively assembled at that time but he needed to spend close to half a billion pounds on the same team to win the league the next season. He finished 3rd in the first season when his squad was about equal (if not better) to 2 or 3 others in the league.
Fair play to him he has a system that works and he usually identifies players, most times very expensive ones, to fit in. But let's be honest, he is more like a driver who wins a car race only when he is given the fastest car.
Expect him not to win the Champions League again this season because at least 2 clubs (Juventus, Barcelona) have squads that are more or less equal to city's. These arguments are rehashed and tired. Barca that pundits gave United a slight advantage in the finals was the "best" team. (Because they won you have reverted to call them best team). But Bayern that had just won UCL (no longer best team having 2 teams comparable to them) just to save your dumb argument. Meanwhile, if he won with Bayern, you would have said "nothing special since that was the team that had already won it before he came". How do I know? You just claimed that with Barca. City went from 1st to 2nd to 4th. Verdict to you - best team. He sold almost all the old legs and replaced them. You ignore that and talk about how much it cost to buy new players. Same you, " Emery should buy one winger, 2 CBs, 1CM, 1RB, 1LB" etc. LOL. If you don't like Pep, you don't like him. Don't use illogic to support yourself. |
