Good day sir, please sir, what do you mean by making ones research outstanding? am about to start my MSC project, I want to be sure of how to make it outstanding in order to get funding for my PHD, please is it the topic that matters or content, or type of research?

The goal should be to publish in a leading peer-reviewed journal or peer-reviewed conference in your field.

To do this, you need to obtain meaningful, or interesting, results from your research. For your results to be credible, they have to be obtained from use of proper methodology.

Concretely, you can discuss with your supervisor to allow you participate in his ongoing research projects. He can assign you a specific problem or objective (from the overarching research theme) to solve within your limited thesis timeframe. You need a well thought-out and structured project to obtain meaningful results. Hard work alone may not suffice.

Failing this, he can point you to an interesting topic that may be outside the scope of his current work. You need to carefully review the literature pertaining to that topic. For your paper to be accepted, your work must have valid motivation/context, be undertaken with the correct tools (methodology), and must achieve a specific objective (or at least raise meaningful and interesting questions for future explorations).

This is not necessarily correct. Some schools will exempt one from english language tests if you possess a masters degree from the UK. always check the departmental website or university website if in doubt. Eg, university of mississippi and university of wisconsin will exempt one from IELTS/TOEFL if you have a masters degree from the UK.

Thanks for the clarification. Ultimately, though, it is good practice to mail the graduate coordinator regarding such requests.

However, when they say "must have earned a higher/tertiary degree" in countries like the UK, they usually mean a four year bachelors degree. A one year UK master's degree is usually too short for English proficiency exemption.

If it's not too much bother, could you share a specific link?

Hi guys. I have a really stupid question to ask.

I want to study in the uk for my master's degree, after which I will proceed for a PhD in the USA. Do I need to write any English tests assuming my plan works out?

Because I saw on some University Web pages that some teaching assistanships would still require English proficiency test scores from international students regardless of where they study.

Help me out guys.

By the way I've been a silent follower of this thread since God knows when. My original plan was to apply to several us schools. The University of Georgia was top of my list. But I changed my mind and am applying for the Chevening and aCommonwealth Shared Scholarships. Amurika coming up soon.

For US schools that require you to take an English test, a Master's degree in the UK would not qualify you for an exemption.

Georgia Tech and UM College Park do not require an English test. You may search for similar schools, if desired.

Hello Guys,

Took the powerprep test again this weekend, and got a score of 154 for quantitative (I skipped the verbal section as advised by my good friend Amofum, so i can focus more on quant).

I am not there yet, and i still feel bad that i can't make 161 like some people on this platform, but at least, i realize that even though i still have a long way to go, I am not where i was yesterday. Slow and steady... sad

Regards, and thanks to all those who reached out...your words strengthen me.

You shouldn't waste the powerprep tests by skipping any section. In fact, you should endeavour to attempt all sections, including the essay prompts, in one go.

You need to build your stamina. It isn't sufficient to know the answers to the questions. You must be able to endure for the test duration.

For light practice, you can use the questions on the official guides.

Hello mates,

Please is there anyone who's currently preparing with the GRE Kaplan online test (the MST tests) or who has prepared with it b4?? The scores i get in my practice test are not encouraging at all (max of 156 in Quant, and 150 in Verbal). It appears the MST tests are more difficult than the real test...?

Biko who has used this to prepare for the GRE test, and how does your real test score compares to your Kaplan MST scores?

Also, there's this app (prep4GRE) i stumbled on in Playstore which I think is cool, but dunno how relevant it is for my preparation....please, who knows how relevant that app is for GRE preparation

Thanks my people...

Kaplan does not simulate the real GRE experience: it is considerably easier than the real exam.

Use Powerprep, Manhattan online tests, and Magoosh.

I believe the GRE is slightly overrated. I had 328 initially and 332 after rewriting; and I didn't notice much benefit.

The most important things, in my opinion, are knowing your budget and choosing the right schools.

It may be more beneficial to focus on other aspects of one's application than rewriting.

So I also wrote the GRE and would love to share my experience. First of all, I am very disappointed with my scores. Infact, I have been very depressed since I got my official scores. Granted I am not very good in Verbal/Writing but I believe I can still get decent scores.

I wrote GRE on August 4 in Port Harcourt. I had to travel from Akwa Ibom to Rivers that morning. Left my house at about 5.30am so I could beat all the PH traffic. Got to the venue about 1.5hrs early. Check in started at about 9am and took almost 2 hours.

I finally got to my seat and immediately exam nerves kicked in. Staggered and managed to get on with the issue essay. Wrote for about 20+ mins before I realized I had misread the topic. No time to remedy. I believe I would have scored a 3 here. For the argument, I barely had time to collect my thoughts. I basically ended up asking questions without answers that would weaken or strengthen the argument. Big poo.... I believe I would have scored a 4 here. Finally AW result....3.5 vs 4.5 I was targeting.

I got 3 wicked verbal sections. So tough that I could not tell which was experimental section. Even the TCs and SEs were so convoluted talkless of those long recondite RCs....bloody hell. The RCs were all about american revolution history and arts nonsense, I just could not understand them at all. Anyway, I ended up with an abysmal 150. My target was 155.

I consider myself a fair maths guru but those quant questions, while not so tough, needed more time to solve. I found myself running out of time. Had to guess on some complex questions and move on. I ended up with 162. I was targeting 165.

I was studying on and off for a few months, never really had enough time to be honest. I work full time and still have to care for a husband and child. It should not be an excuse, but its really tough managing a family, working and still having to study.

Special thanks to sirriddy. That guy is so selfless, was never tired of listening to my whinings. Kept encouraging me to push on. May God continue to bless him.

I really salute the likes of nastydamus and babisho! Kudos to you guys for your scores. I envy you both.

I am considering rewriting but very nervous. I am a PhD hopeful; I know my scores are not good enough and will taint the other excellent parts of my application.

I have a question to ask..... I had reported those scores to my schools. Won't it affect my chances even if i rewrite and achieve better scores?

P.S. Pardon my typo/grammatical errors. I am typing from a phone.

Congrats on your scores.

Don't sweat the AW and verbal scores -- they hardly matter. They are basically used for cut offs in quant-based fields.

What schools are you targeting, including the schools you repored your scores to? Do you have an MSc? Does your work experience relate directly to your PhD area? Does your job description include research? How much research experience do you have, including published papers and independent research work?

Hi everyone,

Been following this thread, although from the shadows. Wanted to write the GRE this month but couldn't get a slot anywhere in PH so I had to travel to Lagos to write on the 13th.

Got to the JKK building quite early and then the wait and anxiety started; can't say why but I was feeling uneasy about the test, not like it was going to be my first or last exam in this life sef. grin

Anyway, as we joined the queue to be screened before commencing the test, the people that were screened first had already started typing away. I got to my computer and started typing too (#50k no be play o, plus transport fare and hotel bills). After the AWA section (which looked rather fair to me), I got down to the first verbal; it must have been the experimental part because boy, was that section harrrrrd (ets should try to leave that type for last na).

It sort of destabilized me but I soldiered on o (again, #50k + siblings), 'attacking' the quantitative section that followed and the others after that. Altogether, it was quite an experience sha. After everything: V 157, Q 164, AWA: 4.5 (I expected more in the AWA but well...).

Very helpful were the Official ETS guide (for AWA, V & Q), Memrize App (for vocab building), the Magoosh Videos (regular and premium) and also Powerprep and Manhattan Six online Tests (to simulate the actual test in terms of timing and, to an extent, difficulty).

There you have it friends...my hustle only just started as I'm looking at UIUC, CMU and PU (God dey o). Thanks to all contributors on this thread, every single one of you.

PS. Just got my TOEFL score: 111. I used the ETS official guide and watched some noteful videos on YouTube. Couldn't even practise with the ETS software because I didn't have enough time, wrote the TOEFL test on the 15th.

Good luck to all future test takers, you can do better.

Congrats Bro.

For the Manhattan practice tests, buying a $10 kindle Manhattan practice guide will give you access to the tests for six months.

Best wishes.

I have really benefited from this thread and I thought I should post the transcript of my interview that took place today, Friday 22nd.

VO: Why did you choose to go to University of Texas at Austin.

Me: UT Austin is the best University for graduate studies in Petroleum Engineering. Additionally, they have an unmatched reservoir simulation research group and I have been in correspondence with the director of the research group, Prof. Kamy Sepehrnoori and he has agreed to take me as an RA,on my request, with an initial agreement I won't be receiving any form of financial assistance since I have an external scholarship from the Nigerian Government, through PTDF and I have the award letter here for your sighting if need be.

VO: Your Visa has been approved bla bla bla.

Congrats, Bro, for your admission and visa approval.

Did you get your admission and/or RA after you won the PTDF scholarship?

What are your stats, if you don't mind sharing?

@square66,ojap and everyone.. .. Thanks guys, I appreciate. Am beginning to check for less competitive schools to have a proper chance for the assistantship . although, I decide to still keep University of Illinois to be the strongest list, then Florida state University . Can someone teach me how to search /find out other means to be very sure about the GA of schools. Using Google, am getting some positive vibes about University of Illinois GA... And I don't want to decive myself by what posted on their website. Pls help me on the best ways to search and verify.... Thanks guys.

- Go to thegradcafe survey results page and search for your school and department. On the comments column, note the number of students with funding.

- Go to the Edulix forum and read up on all the posts on 'the school specific' thread for your school. Also, read the results thread, from 2012 to present, for your department and note the proportion of students indicating funding offers.

- Join the MS in US groups for Fall 2015 and 2016 on Facebook. Search the groups with a query that contains your school and department (remember to use the common acronyms associated with them, too). Note the number of incoming students with funding offers.

- You can also mail students already in the department to inquire about funding. Please do not ask them if there is funding in the department -- that is too generic. Try to ask for the specific number of students in their cohort who are funded through assistantships (and probably the number that obtained funding after the first/second semester).
