1. Their Company policies

2. Their Projects needs

3. The specific Location where he or she is assigned to work.

Common patterns:

1. West Africa off-shore ops: They often spend 4 to 8 weeks on board + 2 to 4 weeks off duty (it varies).

2. If they work closer to Nigerian waters: they might have shorter rotations (like 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off).

3. But wahala wahala is if they work further Off-Shore to places like Cameroon: They could remain there 1 to 3 months on, before they have 1 to 3 months off, depending on their logistics. By that I mean if they travel only in Sea Vessels, they stay longer, than those who travel using choppers to oil fields and oil rigs.

Since you mentioned going Off-Shore to Cotonou and Cameroon, that will explain why he stays 2 to 3 months offshore and away from home.

I so much like people who do not complain about the job or profession of their spouses, after marriage, if before marriage, they clearly know that this is what the person was doing or was going to do. 2. No, I never mentioned that "both the sea and land are called offshore". I said that the land is called On-Shore (On-Land), while the Sea is called Off-Shore (Out-of-Land).

3. You are asking why some oil workers spend only 2 weeks, outside their homes, while others spend 2 months, 3 months, and more? Well, the 2 weeks to go to Off-Shore work locations, by Off-Shore workers, is a standard practice all over the world and it is fixed.

But if an Onshore worker spends 2 months, or 3 months, or more outside his or her home, these are the 3 possibilities:

1. They are presently working on an intensive project and are being lodged or accommodated close to the project site until that project is completed.

2. That oil worker lives in a private lodge very close to his or her workplace, but may have built or bought or rented another apartment quite distant from his workplace, and that is where you people his family are now living in. Such people knows what goes on inside there and may not want his family to be exposed to that. If you know what I mean.

3. That oil worker has another family somewhere else. Maybe a baby mama with child or children for him. Or a sugar daddy. So when they say they are going off for 2 or 3 months, they are actually going to stay with him or her.

But your dad is not that kind of person. So, it may be either the Number 1 or the Number 2.

Oh I now see where you are coming from. But if your dad works Onshore and spent 3 months out of home, then there is a project they were working on. It does not happen always. Most onshore oil and gas workers go to work from their house everyday. It's only offshore workers who have to spend weeks out of their house like 2 weeks every month. Rotation.

I may know a thing or 2 about it.

1. There is no Mainstream. It is Mid-Stream.

2. Those who work on Land oil facilities are working Onshore.

3. Those who work inside the Sea, on rigs, on submarines, and on vessels, are working Offshore.

4. Upstream means all petroleum trading activities that happen inside the Sea. Like Crude oil exploration, and exportation stuffs.

5. Mid-Stream means all petroleum trading activities that happen at Refineries and around it.

6. Downstream means all petroleum trading activities that happen on Land like petrol stations and gas stations, etc.

But you can recheck from your dad, and I will also like to learn more from him too.

OnShore means to work on Land.

OffShore means to work on Sea (Water).

Just to prove a point that cash crops can grown anywhere, and that it is more profitable than people always planting only food crops, I started picking a large pile load of pure water sachets. Opened under each of them with the help of my mother then I was very young. I planted only Soursop and Cashew in all of them. Almost all of them germinated at the back of our house. I later relocated them to a large farm and most grew up but were swallowed and affected by bushes and other stuffs because I was miles away from there. I shaa proved my point that those cash crops can grow everywhere if planted and taken care of.
