I have noticed that for some people,it is a place to practice the ambiguous, unintelligent and offensive words they have picked up from the gutters.
It is not uncommon to see threads derailed by some very familiar words like the one that starts with f,shut up,go tell your mother...blablabla....

5. America is not the best country in the world
6. People are suffering. some people don't even see acannot afford a decent meal to eat. People are becoming poorer(insert comma) taxes are getting higher(insert comma again) job openings are less than what they used to be getting smaller (insert comma for heaven's sake)its not the ideal place to be(what happened to full stop please? ) (Always start very sentence with capital letters please )nothing is FREE everything has a catch especially in the U.S. Nigerians need to stop patronizing countries they dont belong to(belong to where? expantiate) and need to stay in Nigeria and make a change and stop being negative.

Nairaland / General / Why You Should Always Keep It Clean-very Important by ESULAALU: 4:37pm On Nov 29, 2012
Hi Everyone

First of all I have to start with a big apology if the topic of this post is not what you expected it would be. The aim was to make it attractive enough to prompt you to read.

For a very long time,I have remained as one of the many millions of guests who visit this site, read and then leave. However, about a few days ago I stumbled on a thread,(view thread here:https://www.nairaland.com/1114397/cynthia-osokogu-murder-pharmacists-released) where there was a heated argument. The comment on which basis the whole e-fight started was made by a woman. Now whether it was made by a guy would not have mattered still as it would not have stopped the argument from erupting. But I was amazed at the trend of events on that thread.

If you have viewed the thread you must have noticed that only about 2 people made impersonal comments without reference to the insults, apart from that it was a barrage of insults and what have you nots.

I thought to myself,it is indeed easy to throw insults over the internet, afterall I dont know who is on the other side! At the same time,I also thought about it,because this is a faceless forum does not mean I have to be mean! What if it was my next door neighbour? What if it was a distant cousin of mine?At the end of the day, what goes around definitely comes around. So I decided,to pay the mean people on that thread in their own coin.

I started messing around with them.Sure it worked, for everything I said a reply was already waiting for me.Each time I read the replies,I would laugh so hard till my sides ached.I realised one thing, they really did try to match me up word for word, but it wasa tough one.It did look like I was gaining the upper hand because as some point, one of them commented that ''I no dey fight again''

I went a step further,I started following the threads these set of abusive people had commented on and each time I saw they left insults I would promptly mess with them so bad, they had no choice but to start keeping their comments clean. As a matter of fact,I noticed some of them began to use complimentary words and even became more respectful of other people's opinions.

By now you would be familiar to the key people in this whole insult saga, kindly refer to the threads below and see how respectful they had become:

https://www.nairaland.com/1115834/nigerian-music-today-aberration/1#13161597

https://www.nairaland.com/1117170/yoruba-groups-want-okada-banned

https://www.nairaland.com/1117281/youths-shutdown-indomie-factory-kaduna

I realised it really is not so hard to get people to conform on forums such as this.At the end of the day people from various ends of the world visit this site, millions of people just visitors many of which have never visited Nigeria but use this forum as a gateway to Nigeria. They keep themselves abreast of events and happenings in our Country.

We keep clamouring for change and permit me to say it can only start with us,projecting a positive image, respecting each other's opinions and demonstrating empathy at all times is very important.

It has been a pleasure to be a part of this site and it is on this note I have to say thank you for reading and please imbibe these virtues as you relate with your fellow Nigerians on this forum. No need to insults other people's parents or the likes, afterall you would not want anyone to insult or hurt any member of your family too.

Let the golden rule of ''do as you will be done by'' permeate our hearts at all times please.

WAZOBIA-WE ARE ONE!

Please do not swear at me . You might not like my response. The issue is capacity. The moment you arrive from Niger you have "started living in Lagos" That does not give you the right to contest elections or to receive student bursaries etc so there are autochthons who are keen to preserve "Yoruba identity" Too many people of unknown origin are arriving daily to do this business. If they are not discouraged their numbers will grow and next thing they will be telling us not to do Oro or Eyo festival because it is UnIslamic. We are making sure that will not happen by declaring that the Okada party is over.
Those people like you who come from wherever you come from are the ones who feel at home with okada and think because you now live in Lagos you will impose that way on us. We will put a stop to it. You mention livelihood completely ignoring the deaths and maiming. IN that "na market" mindset any trade is OK if it brings money but the reason we are against okada is it is unsafe, dangerous even and a threat to security and harmony

You talk about alternatives when discussing legitimate business. Okada is illegimate on EVERY level. Untrained, unlicensed riders carrying passengers commercially has ALWAYS been illegal in Lagos but government tolerated it till it got out of hand and now they are claiming rights and asking for alternative.
Alternatives only appliy to those people who are indigenes or have paid tax in Lagos consistently. Such people have a claim all others are on their own

ARIBISALA COMMENTED WITHOUT INSULTING ANYONE?HE EVEN SAID ''PLEASE DONT SWEAR AT ME''

NAIRALAND IS INDEED GETTING BETTER.AM PROUD OF YOU MY BOY,YOU ARE NOW THE TRUE FATHER OF YOUR SON.

Music/Radio / Re: Nigerian Music Of Today Is An Aberration by ESULAALU: 11:03am On Nov 29, 2012
Unknown Member:

Again sir, I beg to slightly differ..

I took heed the advice of Owen and researched the etymology of Music.. It was quite an exhausting read, however some definitions of music struck me;

- "Music, often an art/entertainment, is a total social fact whose definitions vary according to era and culture," according to Jean Molino

- "musicologist Jean-Jacques Nattiez: "The border between music and noise is always culturally defined—which implies that, even within a single society, this border does not always pass through the same place; in short, there is rarely a consensus.... By all accounts there is no single and intercultural universal concept defining what music might be"

- just as music is whatever people choose to recognize as such, noise is whatever is recognized as disturbing, unpleasant, or both" (Nattiez 1990, 47–48).

And the list goes on and on...

Point here is simply;

1. Not all music will appeal to you.

2. There is no known universal scale/standard for measuring good or bad music.

3. The music you listen to is dependent on your mood and not your personality. No human listens to just one genre of music all their life. Even a Goth will once in a while deviate from heavy metal rock and indulge in some soulful R&B.

4. Each era brings with it, its own type of music. By the time our grandkids get here, they will have their own kind of music which may not even be a subset of any of the presently known genres.

Now you said you grew up listening to classical music in church, good for you. However, the fact that you were sitting in church listening to church music simply means that they would only be playing a selection of music that must pass a message in line with what the church is all about, YES?! Now lets move away from your church and lets talk about real classical music, E.g Ludwig Van Beethoven. This is one of the greatest composers of all times. His symphonies and quartets have no lyrics whatsoever. Please find one, post a link to it hear, I will download it and then maybe you can tell me what message a bunch of musical instruments playing with no lyric passes to you. I would really love to hear what you are hearing.

I will however agree with you that musical enres have been stereotyped as fitting people with certain moods, but then again, that rule isnt set in stone. I am yet to stumble across any credible research that has directly linked heavy metal, rock or rap with suicide. For every 'RESEARCH' supporting your theory you bring, I will find you one that disproves it.. Ask yourself why despite the several cases brought against heavy metal bands and artistes, not one conviction has ever been recorded.

The bit on sophisticated people being more likely to be lovers of Jazz and classical music is a big laugh. Even the President of the free world (Obama) has admited that he listens to rappers like Common, Khanye, Jay-Z and co. Even Mitt Romney when asked about his favorite musicians, after saying Classical and Jazz, went on to say he loves 'The Rolling Stones, The Eagles and also Aerosmith'. I guess that makes them rebels of some sort abi?! lol

I love Classical music. I will pay my money to hear a fat lady sing at the opera way before I attend a Jay-Z or Lil Wayne concert. I also love Rap, Rock (alternative, a lil bit of heavy metal, slow rock, e.t.c), I love musicals (Evita, Sound of Music, the King & I, e.t.c), oldies like (the beetles, The Beegees, Smokies, e.t.c), Nigerian music (rap, soul, R&B, dancehall et al), I especially love reaggae (Riddims, culture, dancehall, root e.t.c).. and it goes on.. But in my versatility in music, I still for the life of me cant stand foreign Gospel (Kirk Franklin, Don Meon, Kenoly and co), still cant understand Jazz music (like whats up with that shiit?! lol)..

Once more sir, music is like love, it has no real universally acceptable meaning, differs in appeal from one person to another and does not necessarily have to carry a message be it negative or positive for it to be described as good music.

Unknown Member: - Electronic voters card is good as an idea in itself.

- But how does a country where there is no light, where the Internet and I.T in general is still very alien to us intend to make this work?! The problems people faced during the voters registration is still fresh on our minds. Some machines werent working, some polling areas had to bring their own generators that broke down half way through, e.t.c.

- Those communities that are located in remote and hard to reach places (where even mobile phone signals dont exist) would not benefit from this scheme.

- 10 years is rather too long.. I would suggest 4 years max. the same duration that every elected official is supposed to last in office. This way, verification of voters would be done before each election to ensure that dead card holders are deleted from the system and also weed out electronic rigging.
