"Jamille wake up." I tapped her for the third time. We were chatting when she fell asleep. I expected it though. Jamille had a tendency to sleep off easily whenever she sat listening to me.
"Jason?"
"Yeah. You slept off on me only for you to keep saying "Jay I'm not in the mood." Are you okay?"
"I guess I am. Sorry about that. Did Gloria call?" She sat up.
"No"
"It was all a dream then." She said.
"I suggest we start going to Niel's place."
"Niel's place?" She looked confused.
"Mille, are you having amnesia? That's where our party is holding for heaven's sake."
"I'm sorry. Give me a minute to call Gloria." She placed a call to Gloria asking about a cake or something of the sort. When she was done with the call,she had a look of relief on her face.
"I went to your room already. I picked the packed bag on your bed. Is that all you need?"
"Yeah. Thanks Jay."
We left he house and boarded a cab to Niel's place.
We went our separate ways when we got there to get ready for the party. I wasn't really in favour of the party but what could I do when all the ladies had ganged up against me. I rarely ever smelt my dad's house. It was way too boring there so whenever I came home, I stayed at Aunt Liz's.
I wore a sky blue shirt with a pair of red trousers courtesy of Mille. Mille wore a body hugging knee length multi coloured floral gown coupled with black stilettos and a black clutch. Gloria,on the other hand wore a pink high neck velvet knee length dress with royal blue stilettos.
The party began few minutes after 7 pm. Surprisingly,my dad came for the party. I had to admit it was a lot more fun than I expected it to be. Mille and Gloria never let me out of their sight. We cut the big cream cake together. Lots and lots of pictures were taken till my eyes hurt from the camera flash. Just when the party was grinding to a close,Mille and Niel decided to surprise everyone. Not everyone though,most of the guests had gone already. It was just Niel's family and ours when Niel announced that he and Mille were officially a couple. I didn't take time to follow all the love drama. All I cared to hear was that Mille agreed to date her best friend.


Mille

Before the party,I gave Niel my answer. He was so delighted to hear I had accepted to be his lady. I never imagined he would announce it to the whole family. My dad came to hug me and give me a wrapped gift. I was glad he didn't do anything nasty throughout the party. Aunt Liz held me in her hug for more than five minutes. The woman was indeed blessed with strength from above. They were all acting as if Niel asked me to marry him already. Niel and I managed to escape from more hugs. We went into his dad's study.
"Thank you Mille." He said with his eyes dancing with joy.
"Anything for you bestie."
"There are things you need to know Mille. Trust me,I'll make sure you know all. I won't hide anything from you."
I heard a squeal that sounded like Gloria's but I paid no attention to it.
"Okay Niel,as you wish."
"Let's go for a stroll in my mum's garden. I've never taken you there." He said
"Yeah,but your sis has."
"That girl likes ruining my fun." He groaned.
"I want you to take me there." I couldn't believe I just said that.
"Sure my lady." He smiled and took my hand in his.
As we were exiting the house, I stopped.
"What is it Mille?" He asked.
"Niel,do you have a brother?"
Before he could answer,we heard a voice behind us.
"He doesn't just have a brother, he has a twin brother."

Our house has just been busy since morning. P.H morning rain did wonders to our fence, tore it down and everything. Now our house is bare and our neighbour's things destroyed. We just thank God no lives were lost. They are working on the repairs though, so update will be later on

For the first time in my life,I wished time would just slow down. Unfortunately,time must have been enjoying the discomfort I felt as it kept going faster and faster.
Niel and I hadn't been talking much since he made the proposal. I needed space to put my brain in one piece. I told mum about it and she was delighted as if she was the one that would date Niel. She urged me to think about it. I could see she wanted only my happiness.
March 17 landed again. My eighteenth birthday and that of Jason and Gloria. My family and Gloria's decided to have a joint birthday party for both of us. I invited my dad but I was sure he wouldn't come. I stopped calling him some months ago because he always claimed to be in a board meeting each time I called.
The night before my birthday,I couldn't sleep. I just kept tossing on my bed. I called Kara and she promised me everything would be okay.
"Just follow your heart Mille." She told me. She couldn't come for the birthday party because of her pregnancy. She was seven months gone and had some health challenges. Mum had gone to see her about thrice since she left.
Her condition had started getting everyone worried. Her blood pressure was nothing to write home about. The most important prayer in the family was for safe delivery when her time comes.
The house was full once again with the exception of Kara. Rachel and Jason were around and so were dad and mum. I was shooed to bed very early and I didn't close my eyes till the wee hours of the morning. No one came to disturb me surprisingly.
When I was tired of staying indoors,I bathed and went downstairs. Only Jason was in the living room watching TV without a care in the world.
"Hey Jay"
"Sleeping beauty. I thought you'd never wake up. It's almost noon."
"Happy birthday to you too."
He smiled.
"Come here little sis." We shared a brief hug.
"I'm not your little sis." I pouted.
"Let me hear English abeg. I'm some minutes older than you madam."
"Chaff boy." I pushed him and he laughed.
"I'm not considered chaff in Uniben so your 'chaff' hypothesis is wrong."
"Whatever. Let's go to the salon. I need to fix my hair."
"Women. You haven't fixed hair till now and you have a party in the evening. Congrats."
"Are you through? I'm getting late."
"Madam late. Won't you at least eat something?"
"Nope,not hungry."
We left for the salon. I bought a kinky straight weave hair there. I wasn't a fan of curly weaves. They made me look terribly terrible. Jason just sat staring at my head till my hair was all fixed.
"Is it not heavy?" He asked sincerely.
I laughed. "It's as heavy as a bowling ball. Argh!" I feigned pain.
"You're not a serious human being."
"Same to you bros."
We went home to while away time. Be was filling me up on what's been going on in his life and I gave him a listening ear as always,only interrupting to tease him.
I called Gloria when it was few minutes to six pm.
"Hello Gloria."
"Jamille,you called at the right time."
"What is it this time?"
"Our cake is ' it ' "
"What's that supposed to mean Gloria?"
"Well,the woman just called. She was telling me some silly story of falling sick and blah blah blah. Our cake is history."
"What?! Gloria if this is a prank,stop it."
"I'm not joking Mille. What are we gonna do?"
"Have you told Niel?"
"Yeah. He said we should buy at an eatery."
"Which one will be okay?"
"Crunchies."
"Oh okay. Aka Road right?"
"Yeah. I'm with him. We're on our way there."
"Alright. Let me know how it goes." She ended the call.
"What is it Mille?"
"Our cake is ruined. Niel and Gloria are going to check out another one."
"Yikes!" He exclaimed. "Chill, I think there's a new cake place around here." He added.
"Are you sure?" I raised my brows.
"Yeah, I saw it yesterday. I don't remember the name but I know I saw it."
My phone rang.
"Gloria?"
"The cakes are all booked. Niel is going somewhere else. I can't follow him,mum needs me at home now."
"Jason said there's a place around here. I'll go check it out."
"Ok then. Later."
"Jason,let's go." I ordered.
Jason suggested we went on foot since he was sure the place wasn't far.Jason preferred waiting for me outside.
"Jason,what's this? Let's go in."
"Babe,I don't know a 'C' about cakes so go ahead. I'll be right here."
"I don't trust you,you'll leave me here."
"This time I won't."
I eyed him and went inside. The cakes I saw were not as large as the one we were expecting initially. I called Gloria and she asked me to get three for us. I picked a cream cake for me,pink for Gloria and blue for Jason.
I asked the lady at the counter to write our names on each of the cakes. Just then,I saw Niel walk in.
"Niel!" He didn't turn at first.
"Jathniel?" He stopped and turned to face me.
"Hey babe." He was walking towards me.
"Why didn't you answer me the first time?"
"I didn't hear you."
"Gloria didn't tell me you were coming around here."
"She probably didn't know." He replied curtly before facing the lady at the counter to place his order.
"I've ordered for the cakes already."
"Nothing wrong in me ordering another one." He said without a smile.
He just bought a plane blue cake and dashed out without saying goodbye.
"What's wrong with him again?" I thought. Niel looked really different. He rarely ever wore ankara, in fact,he never wore ankara in his life. Plus,the voice wasn't as deep as I remembered. Maybe it was because I hadn't seen him in a while. I checked the picture of him I had in my phone and he looked slightly different from what I saw.
The lady who took my order came back with the cakes,distracting me from my comparison.
I went outside to call Jason and he wasn't there. As I turned to go back in,Jason came out from a shop with a bottle of Coke in his hand.
"Jason,come and help me with the cakes."
"Where's your smile and your politeness Mille?"
"I'm not in the mood Jay."

Mum gave me the look that always sent shivers down my spine. My mother was one of the most powerful women I've come across.
"Gloria,let's go prepare food."
"OK mum. Hunger is already knocking at the door of my belly."
Jamille sat across me with legs crossed and her eyes fixed on the tiles as if she was seeing it for the first time. Her toes were curled and I knew immediately she was nervous. She only curled her toes when nervous.
"Mille." I called out to her.
"I'm right before you."
"The thing is..." i paused.
"Jathniel say whatever you want to say. I need to help your mum in the kitchen."
"I don't want you as my best friend anymore. I'm..."
Her phone rang. She picked it out from her bag. When she checked who was calling,I could swear she froze on her seat.
"Hello mum." She sat quiet for a while. Apparently,her mum was giving a long sermon.
"I'm sorry mum. I knew all along." She stood up and headed outside. She probably didn't want me to listen to their conversation.

"What did you just say Mille?" Mum yelled over the phone.
"I was the first one she told. Believe me,I tried to tell her to let you know but she refused. That night she told you about the fashion stuff was the night I asked her to tell you. Didn't you notice I didn't say a word that night?"
"I trusted you more than this Mille."
"Mum,there was nothing I could do. I can't go announcing it for her. It's her child not mine. That would have been totally unfair to her."
"Mille,this isn't about fairness. Now,she's run off to Abuja. Who will take care of her? It's her first pregnancy."
"She just wanted to save you the embarrassment mum. She did it for you and somewhat for herself."
"So that's why you refused to sleep over last night huh?"
"Something like that mum."
"I've just spoken with Rachel. I would have told you to come home but I know you'll just come up with a story this instant. I'm worse than mad at Kara as I speak with you and this must never be heard of in my house again. Do you get it?"
"Yes mum."
"I didn't care this much for you all to just watch some humans get y'all pregnant outside of wedlock. I don't breed baby mamas or whatever you call it."
"I'm sorry mum. It was just a mistake mum. Kara would never have chosen to carry a child outside wedlock."
"I know it was a mistake. It's always a mistake." She was crying.
"Mum?"
"Little mistakes like this can cost a lot. I know what I'm saying. Don't get me wrong,I wish her all the best as her mother. It's just that I never thought that this would happen around me again."
"Again?"
"Never mind Mille. Enjoy the rest of the day."
"You too mum." I hung up and walked back inside the house.
Niel was seated at the exact spot I left him but this time,he was laughing really hard over the phone. I went into the room to drop my bag. I was about heading to the kitchen when I changed my mind. Niel's mum would probably chew me alive. I went back to the living room. He was done with his call already.
"Niel, were we done with our discussion?".
"No Mille. Truth is I wanted to wait till your eighteenth birthday to tell you."
"Oh! To tell me that you no longer want me as your best friend."
"Yes."
"Isn't that a cruel thing to tell a young girl on her birthday?"
He laughed. "Let me finish Mille. I want you to play a role that's larger than being my best friend. Do you get my point?"
"Niel what are you saying?" I was a bit sober than before.
"You know what I'm saying Mille. I don't want any answer yet till your birthday next year. I'll be patient till then. If you have an answer before then,I'll be happy to hear it. OK?"
I nodded.
"My uncle Don knows about it. He asked me to tell you to come see him when I finally let the cat out of the bag. I want everything right from step one."
"Alright. I'll go see him tomorrow." My eyes were still on the floor."
"Good. I guess we're done."
"Niel?"
"Yes."
"Why have you been ignoring my calls? You've refused to speak with me or even see me for a while now."
"I'm awful sorry about it. I needed answers to some questions before taking the step I just took."
"What questions?"
"Pray for your birthday to come quickly Mille." He left me in the living room.
I pinched myself to be sure I wasn't dreaming. I couldn't believe Niel actually said those words to me.
