@Divepen1, I am interested. |
@mhd5757, psychologically disturbed people actually get sick, infact, they fall sick more often than normal people due to their lifestyle, and they even have a shorter life span compared to normal people, it's just that no one notices. Though, it may be observable that the health of clinically insane people never actually deteriorate quickly to the point of death, considering their unhygienic lifestyle, but I suspect it may be due to "placebo effect". Basically, since they have no awareness of contracting diseases, they can live without conciousness of the disease, even though they may have a disease at that time. Thus, due to the fact that they have a disease, but are not conscious of it, the disease gets cured. Its a neurological syndrome where the psychological believe of the infected person contributes to healing of the infection. |
@Maxchu, I totally agree, I was recently speaking with a colleague who happens to be studying pharmacy, he just came back from India and he was telling me how far India has gone in purifying herbal components for medical use. The problem with herbal medications in Nigeria is that there is no purification, and no definite dosage, which in turn presents the issue of toxicity. For example, if I drink a pot of bitter leaf extract, I know that it helps cure diarrhoea and abdominal cramps, But: 1. What exactly is in that bitter leaf that acts against the diarrhoea-causing pathogens? 2. Instead of drinking a whole pot, or a big cup, what exact dosage or concentration of the bitter leaf solution is needed to cure the ailment? 3. Does bitter leaf have other phytochemical components that could be toxic if consumed in large or even small amounts? These are the questions that need to be worked upon for us to really certify herbal medications as a viable alternative medicine. Herbs contain numerous phytochemical compounds, many of these compounds have antimicrobial properties or healing effects, but there are also many that may pose health risks, so when a herbalist just tosses a few leaves together, grind them, soak them in water and tell you to drink, you have to wonder if you are not drinking a medication that has toxic constituents along with good ones. That is why side-effects such as liver and kidney failure, kidney stones, and even septicaemia have been associated with excessive use of raw herbal medications. To make herbal medications up to par with orthodox medicines, they need to undergo purification in order to isolate the active phytochemical components needed to treat a disease, and discard the useless or toxic ones. Yes, pathogens are becoming more resistant to synthetic treatment, and I believe that herbs can offer a very potent alternative, but first, they must undergo purification and clinical trials. |
Misworldz:Is the vaginal discharge mucopurulent(does it look like pus)?, does it have a different colour or smell from the normal discharge you see during sex?. In any case, try ceptrine tablets, if it doesn't work, then see a doctor. |
@Maxchu, you can try Pefloxacin, Augmentin, Ciprofloxacin or Clotrimazole, the problem is that Staphylococcus aureus is extremely variable in terms of strains, hence it is fast becoming resistant to almost all known synthetic antibiotics. Also look out for genuine herbal remedies. |
LTGEN:Thank you for the clarification. |
I heard that the Nigerian government just signed a defence agreement with Britain that allows about 5000 british rednecked soldiers police our northern borders. Can anyone confirm, because there seem to be a media blackout on the issue. |
Misworldz:Normally, vaginal discharges are not cause for alarm, but, do you feel an itchy sensation or slight pain while urinating?, if you do, then it is an infection. It could be anything from bacteria vaginosis to trachomoniasis. You can try using ceptrine(metronidazole) for a couple of days, if symptom persists, then go straight to the hospital for proper diagnosis and treatment. |
abumeinben:Same here, though still planning to run a Parasitology programme, I am in MCB and Virology. |
abumeinben:Is she a Microbiologist? |
@slap1 and abumeinben, gastroenteritis is a bacterial infection that can be caused by a wide range of enteric bacteria, but commonly Escherischa coli, Salmonella typhi and a number of Shigella species. Some viruses can also cause GE, but since the outbreak was due to contaminated water, I strongly suspect that it is a case of faecal pollution of E. coli. It affects the digestive system and cause chronic diarrhoea, abdominal pain, weakness etc. It isn't a Nigerian disease, it occurs everywhere in the world, but Africa and Asia are particularly affected by outbreaks due to general poor hygiene, climatic conditions and bad healthcare system. |
Well, as a microbiologist with a bit of knowledge in human anatomy, I can say that Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia is a condition that affect many adult males of 60 and above, in some cases, the enlarged prostate gland doesn't get to the proportion that becomes harmful to the individual, but in quite a number of case, the prostate becomes inflamed to the extent that the individual requires medical attention. The exact cause of BPH is unknown, but factors such as excessive sex or masturbation, hormones, malnutrition, cellular pathway signalling, heredity and so on have been implicated. Microbiologically speaking, BPH can be caused by microbial infection of the prostate tissue and uretine epithelium. This may cause congesting of the prostate and subsequently lead to hypertrophy. Yes, natural herbs have been known to possess anti-inflammatory effect on the prostate gland. |
UjuJoan2:Well, I think you need to understand that the human society is inherently patriachial. To put it in a pedestrian way; I am sure that as a married woman, you bear your husband's name(hence, you share his identity), before you got married, you bore your father's name. Your children will also bear your husband's name, the only thing you have to offer them is your genes and the occassional dose of maternal affection. Even when it comes to choice of children, I am sure you would be deeply disturbed if you have no male child, even after having a gaggle of girls. Now, take a look at religion(which is a key factor of social dynamics), try imagining God as a woman, with the whole breasts and butt business. But I am sure you can conveniently picture God as a bearded old man with furrowed brows, sternly peering down at the wretched deeds of mortals. Even among most animals, the male is the dominant species and central to all social relations. So, it is a matter of how the human society is structured, women are fundamentally secondary in the society. The issue of feminism is a misguided attempt at interrupting the social order, which is structurally impossible. Energy should be channeled at getting gender equity, but equality is a pipe-dream and sociologically radioactive. Like Postmann, Fearlez and co have said, women have their place in the society, but trying to displace the patriachal order of the species is injurious and unacceptable. |
BlackBaron:We are still maturing as a democracy....you shouldn't lose hope, all these sort of constitutional parallels are bound to happen. |
lionel4power:I agree that the principle of checks and balances as enshrined in the constitution, should be respected. But in the case of a national emergency, the executive is within its right to take extraordinary measures to protect our democratic institutions.... However, I do not support the ragtag use of force to bamboozle lawmakers. They could have performed better. |
lionel4power:When the legislative arm is holding an entire nation to ransom and obstinately refuses to see sense in convening for the sake of averting a national crisis, all because they are afraid of losing power to the ruling party, what do you expect to happen? Governance is not an easy thing, you people think it is as simple as "separation of power" and "constitutional right", but I assure you, if you are there, you will understand the frustration of the executive. I may not really support the use of crude force as displayed by the DSS earlier today, but don't think governance is a pedestrian task that you can easily analyse from behind your wooden desk. |
lionel4power:It is indeed funny because the people behind it all know themselves and they know what they are aiming for..... Why should I start foaming in the mouth when I know that this is all a smokescreen?.... It was a coup gone wrong, but even the coup plotter had to have know it may go wrong and so many factors are yet to be known of the event.... Whatever happens, every of them know that they must keep our democracy going, that is the only way they can retain their powers.... So yes, I find it all funny because it's just a passing drama. ![]() |
lebuhsi: funny folks, people shouting "save democracy" as if democracy was ever in danger ![]() |
abiodunalasa:Thanks. |
abiodunalasa:Thanks, that means the MNJTF base in N'Djamena and the one in Cameroon also have troops from the other countries in them?. |
I also want to ask the same question for the ACIRC(African Capacity for Immediate Response to Crisis), is it a mandate made up of multinational troops, or just an agreement that involve various sovereign units with harmonized command. |
I want to ask a question, is the Multinational Joint Task Force a combined operation force of Chadian, Nigerian, Nigerien and Cameroonian soldiers or is it made up of multinational national military components working separately in their individual territories but with a harmonized command?. What I mean is, for example, is the current MNJTF base (sector) in Baga made up of troops from Chad, Niger, Nigeria and Cameroon, or is it only Nigerian troops working in cohesion with the other similar troops stationed across the borders? |
Of course China can probably become a new "colonial master" in the African continent if we allow the balance of relationship to tip too far in their favour. They have the capacity and funds to assist us develop our economies, but it comes at a price, Chinese companies are taking over everywhere, China gives infrastructural loans with condition that the projects must be executed by Chinese companies; In the end, we may have a situation where Africa owes China so much that we become practically dependent of them for economic survival. But we can also be smart in dealing with them by negotiating trade deals with them, requesting that their companies partner with our indigenous companies in executing capital projects, and using their cheap loans to build our industrial capacity so as to enable us boost our productivity. All in all, China-Africa partnership is a concept that could pan out either very good or very bad, the choice is in our hands. |
Please, those living in the FCT, specifically Abuja axis should brief us about the current progress of the Abuja world trade centre and even centenary city. What is the stage of progress?, are they near completion?, is there active work on site?. Pictures would also be appreciated. |
Very nice initiative....I hope all these ideas and projects come together to make Lagos one of Africa's smart cities. |
iblawi:Saraki has strong backing from both the PDP faction of the senate and a good portion of the APC, he also has a sort of alliance with the Speaker of the HoR who equally has general backing from the lower chamber of parliament.... It would be chaotic if we have a case of impeachment proceedings against the President(who is becoming increasingly unpopular),and the Presidency knows that, so I believe all these shenanigans are just attempt to bamboozle the Saraki into accepting terms of remaining in the APC. But in truth, I believe if the police has ironclad evidence connecting Saraki to the Offa killings, they should take him to court and have him jailed, not harass him in daylight. |
iblawi:The same EFCC that has lost its case against Saraki at Supreme Court due to lack of concrete evidence....the presidency wouldn't want to scatter the country by forcefully ejecting a powerful senate president in broad daylight. |
iblawi:Saraki is planning to decamp back to PDP, hence, the APC elites are not ready to make things easy for him. But in reality, they cannot just unseat a Senate President in Nigeria like that, where does the presidency get that kind of power?. |
Henry240:Lol.... Is that not Saraki's convoy brouhaha ??.... |
kikuyu1:Only Trump is looking right while all other world leaders are looking left....perhaps a statement of the unorthodox viewpoint the current U. S. administration. |
