In what could be described as I-don’t-care-attitude, Oyo state governor Abiola Ajimobi has said he is not deterred by the strike threat of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), vowing that any worker who goes on strike will not be paid. He said ultimatum issued by Labour is not only surprising but unnecessary and uncalled-for in the prevailing circumstances. He urged the labour leaders to negotiate with the government, vowing that any worker who goes on strike without following due process will not be paid. The flamboyant governor equally said he is not ready and will not review the 90 per cent income dedicated for the payment of workers salary from the Federation Account. According to him, government cannot pay 62,000 workers with the money that ought to be used to maintain over 10 million citizens. “Modern day labour union and government relationship has listed steps that must be taken. Step one is if you have any concern about anything, there is a joint negotiation committee that is made up of government and workers, you first go there to discuss with them. “If after the discussion it does not work then you can go to the next level where the head of service and government will now appoint some people to discuss. It is when negotiations have broken down that labour can give notice of strike and not this old time labour government relationship where without discussing you will issue ultimatum to go on strike. “It is illegal because this is a government where law must be followed and obeyed, not this culture of impunity. It is wrong to give an ultimatum to go on strike without reaching a consensus with the government. “We have an agreement, there was a time we use to get close to N5 billion from the Federal Government and our IGR was like N1 billion, now everybody is aware of the situation, and now we are having N2 billion plus from Federal Governmen,” he was quoted by Nation newspaper. Also, traditional rulers in the state have begged the labour leaders not to go on strike. The Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Saliu Akanmu Adetunji, said labour should be considerate and embrace the government’s conditions while the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, said: “The government has tried his best allocating 90 per cent of the federal allocation to pay the worker’s salary. The labour leaders only need to be patient and considerate.” https://www.naij.com/788493-shocking-apc-governor-vows-not-pay-workers-salary.html?source=index_main |

Embattled Kaduna state governor, Nasir El-Rufai has gotten
into another trouble as organized labour in the state are set to
shut down all activities in the state following his alleged anti-
workers policies and excesses. The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) said it is ready to give the governor a run for his money after efforts by the the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Joint Council in Kaduna State to prevail on governor El-Rufai to cease his alleged siege on workers and trade unions in the state had been treated with contempt. In a statement published in various newspapers, TUC said: “As we write, the Kaduna State Governor is compelling workers in the state against their will to choose whether to belong to Trade Unions or opt out of the Trade Union system completely. By his bizarre actions, Governor El-Rufai may think that he is destroying the trade unions in the state but what he is actually displaying is his lack of elementary knowledge of labour laws in the country because even though the law permits the worker to opt out of trade union, it is not the responsibility of the Governor to force him or her to do so. ”El-Rufai further exposed his ignorance when he told a national newspaper recently that he decided to destroy the union in Kaduna State because N2,000 was deducted from a worker’s salary as union dues and that when he multiplied that amount with the number of Kaduna State Government employees, including the local government staff, he came to the spurious conclusion that the union collects N170 million as check-off dues. “It is really a pity that a governor of a state in Nigeria does not know that union dues is not a flat rate of N2,000 for every employee and that there are about 15 unions in the public service of a state that are entitled to union dues based on a rate approved by the Registrar of trade unions.” TUC also said El-Rufai wants the workers to pay tax on union dues deducted from their own salary adding that trade unions were listed in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and as such the Kaduna State governor has no legal authority to write his own labour laws. Meanwhile, popular Lagos pastor and the chairman, Fresh Democratic Party, Pastor Chris Okotie, has joined those who have spoken against the now controversial bill. Okotie advised El-Rufai to change his plan to introduce a law that would require preachers to obtain a licence before preaching in the state. https://www.naij.com/788478-el-rufai-gets-trouble-find.html?source=index_main |

Considering the level of investigations conducted on the Goodluck Jonathan administration, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) may arrest the former president before May, 29, 2016, when the current administration would have clocked one year in office, a top official of the agency has said. The EFCC top shot, who spoke with our reporter at the weekend, disclosed that the arrest, two weeks ago, of the Managing Director of Kakatar Engineering and Construction Company Limited, Mr. Azibaola Robert, whom the official described as “closest kinsman of former president Jonathan so far,” was a clear indication that “we are inching close to making former President Jonathan our guest. ”The official dismissed as reckless recent comments by another former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, dismissing the anti-graft agency as a “toothless bulldog.”The EFCC chief predicted that “unfolding events in the next few weeks will actually confirm whether the EFCC has indeed become a toothless bulldog.”Said the official, “We arrested Mr. Azibaola Robert on March 23, 2016 when he came to honour our invitation. We also arrested his wife, but she has since been granted bail. The following day, we arrested Dakoru Atukpa, Executive Director of his company. As we speak, both men are in our custody and are helping with vital information needed to nail the former president. ”According to the official, Robert and Atukpa were arrested in connection with what he described as “ongoing investigations” into a $40 million oil pipeline security contract, which emanated from the Ministry of Petroluem, but was paid for by the office of the equally detained former National Security Adviser (NSA), Retired Col. Sambo Dasuki. The EFCC official said the commission was working on a lead that One-Plus Nigeria Limited, Kakatar’s sister company which secured the oil pipeline security contract, may have been a front of former President Goodluck Jonathan. He said, “Even though One-Plus appeared to have successfully executed the contract, we are interested in details of how the company executed the job, including those who got paid from the$40 million sum. “Even though we are still investigating, there is sufficient suspicion that both men used One-Plus as front of the former President. The Managing Director of One-Plus has constantly maintained that the company was incorporated well before Jonathan became Vice President, and that it wasn’t a crime to come from Otuoke,” offered the official. The EFCC official said the commission was unsettled by former president Olusegun Obasanjo’s recent description of the agencyas a toothless bulldog, and was committed to taking on persons considered sacred cows just to prove Obasanjo wrong. He said, ‘You know former President Obasanjo has his unique way of passing his message. Before Obasanjo even described our Commission as a toothless bulldog, several persons accused us of shielding former President Jonathan. The truth is that we are not shielding anybody. It will not be good for us to rush to court only to be disgraced, the reason we took this long to make the arrests.“However, be assured that a very big fish will land in our net before May 29. We intend to make the arrest of this big fish a Democracy Day gift to Nigerians,” offered the official.Tasked to unmask the identity of the “big fish,” the EFCC officialretorted, “you are a journalist and should know better. ”The EFCC official ruled out the possibility of an early arraignment for Jonathan’s kinsmen, saying, “we will keep them in custody for as long as possible, and for as long as they cooperate and tell us the whole truth about what they know about the transactions, and the involvement of the former president.”Said the EFCC officer, “Fortunately, we have secured a court order to keep them (Jonathan’s kinsmen) for another two weeks. If need be, we will apply for an extension. But be assured that we won’t allow this matter go the way of others. With this case, we will prove those who accuse us of being toothless bulldogs wrong.”Contacted, head of media of Kakatar, Mr. Austin Ekheinde, declined comments, referring The AUTHORITY to his boss’s lawyer Gordy Uche, SAN, who confirmed the arrest by EFCC of the MD and ED of Kakatar CE Limited.Said the senior lawyer, “Yes, EFCC arrested my clients Messrs Azibaola Robert and Dakoru Atukpa, MD and ED respectively of Kakatar CE and One-Plus, on March 23 and 24th respectively, when they went to honour EFCC invitation. ”The lawyer confirmed that both men were being detained in connection with a $40 million pipeline security contract, and the purchase of a N650 million house, but that the EFCC has refused to arraign them before a competent court.According to the SAN. operatives of the Commission conducted several searches on the offices of the detained men, carting awayseveral documents . The lawyer said he was reasonably informed that both men were being made to make statements under duress implicating former President Goodluck Jonathan ostensibly to serve certain interests.Aside Obasanjo, who dubbed the EFCC a “toothless bulldog” for not going after “sacred cows,” top officials of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) have been mounting pressures on President Muhammadu Buhari to give EFCC the nod to arrestJonathan, who last year shocked the world by becoming the first African president to concede defeat in a presidential election even before the results were officially released. http://thenigerialawyer.com/efcc-may-arrest-jonathan-before-may-29/ |

In what might be considered an incredible revelation, Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue has said that Fulani herdsmen are not responsible for attacks in the country. Fulani herdsmen have been fingered in the incessant attacks between herdsmen and farmers over cows being allowed to graze on farmlands. The recent attack in Agatu local government in Benue state has resulted in the death of many farmers and Fulani herdsmen have been accused of the attack. PM News reports that the governor of Benue said the attacks in the country were not carried out by Fulani herdsmen but herdsmen from from Mali, Ghana, Congo and Niger and that the foreign herdsmen have been committing atrocities since 2011. He urged the federal government to tighten security at borders. Ortom said: “Unless they are chased out, it would be hard to maintain peace in the country. “These herdsmen are very destructive and well-armed. They kill women and children on sight. “They are completely different from the Fulani’s that we have lived and cohabited with over the years. “We understand that the herdsmen came from Mali, Ghana, Congo, Niger among others and are killing us every day with impunity. This must stop. “As we speak, over eight Local Governments have been affected across the state. The situation is really overwhelming.” He urged herdsmen to embrace ranches instead of grazing reserves as lands were not available in the state for such. He noted that 85 per cent of the citizens were farmers and occupied the little available lands. Meanwhile, a group, One Idoma Initiative called on Governorl Ortom to visit Agatu and guarantee the safety of lives and properties. https://www.naij.com/782993-shocker-fulani-herdsmen-not-responsible-attack-governor-ortom.html?source=index_latest |

Sunday Oduntan, the Executive Director of the group, said this on Tuesday at a news conference. He said the army owed Benin DISCO N2.3 billion; Eko, N1.9 billion; Ikeja, N1.6 billion; Jos, N2 billion; Kaduna, N6.6 billion; Kano, N301 million; Port Harcourt, N1.3 billion and Yola, N435 million. Mr. Oduntan said out of the N60 billion owed to the companies, army’s total debt stood at N15 billion. He expressed dissatisfaction with the situation, particularly with the army. He pleaded with President Muhammad Buhari to assist the distribution companies to ensure that the army paid its energy bills. According to him, power sector requires $40 billion to ensure adequate, reliable and stable power supply in the country. He added that the companies had improved on their facilities by installing smart prepaid meters, taken customers’ enumeration and installing new technologies for adequate electricity. Mr. Oduntan explained that the DISCOs had made adequate plans to ensure safety in the electricity industry, adding that the facilities in the sector could absorb new 10,000 megawatts, if generated. He expressed concern that many customers did not want to pay their electricity bills, adding that this was hampering the sector.
