queenesthr: Most of the items in the are included for ceremonial reasons. They don't really expect the in-laws to provide everything on the list.
The essence is just to show you value your daughter and that you don't want to give her out to a pauper. The in-laws should show they are capable of taking care of the woman.
A man is expected to be hard working and able to feed and clothe his family. You are quite correct. Most of the items there are negotiable, depending on what you can afford. On a lighter note, I dont think there's anything wrong in giving your daughter out to a broke brother. More and more dudes are still in a recession these days P.S But it seems the OP is not complaining about the items, she just needs their prices. |

Kc3000: @excanny I don't know what you mean by flawed arguement, when you are reinforcing my point. I agree that they are not Igbo in the least. The Nigerian that bears an English name knows that he's not English, and would not claim his people to be the originators of the English language. Surely, he knows of his mother tongue, even if he cannot speak it. This is quite different from claiming Igbo as the original langauge and culture of your forefathers, yet claiming no relationship to the rest of the Igbo. I suggested they rid themselves of anything that might suggest that they are Igbo, including the language. This is not a new concept here. They started to rename the villages in port-harcourt long ago i.e umuokoro to rumuokoro (which is not radical enough to me, as it still sounds kinda Igbo). I'm only imploring them to thoroughly execute this exercise and completely detach from that which they so obviously hate, being Igbo. This is where I disagree with you. You can not force them to stop using Igbo names. If they find Igbo language and names cool to use, they are feel to use them. Igbos should be proud that others are promoting their language and names. Prof. Chike Obi named his sons Mustapha and one other Yoruba name I cant remember now. Are you suggesting that those boys stop using those names because they are not from the cultures that bear such names? See, there's a need for us to respect each other. That's the only way we can exist together in harmony. The more you try to persuade these people to admit their 'Igboness', the more they distance themselves. Do you see that your desire to join them into your one Igbo nation is not working? Why keep trying what is not working? As for the name-changing of some of their towns. Have you found out their reasons for it? If I can remember correctly, rumu=umu, going by the sense of the words. It's just a mere dialectic change! I wont lose my sleep over that. |
Culture › Re: Ikwerre Names & Their Meanings by excanny: 9:46am On Feb 16, 2011 |
Kc3000: Not this arguement again. All this could be avoided if all those who insist that they are not Igbo, but merely borrowed the Igbos names, language, culture and tradition, would kindly desist from such a practice and return all they have borrowed from the rightful owners. No one would ever mistake you for Igbo if you stop bearing Emeka, Obinna etc, celebrating the same festivals, having the same deities, masquerades, having the same market days, or wearing the same traditional regalia as the Igbo. Just as you conveniently adopted the Igbo way of life, without being Igbo, you can adopt another, or even better, invent or return to your own authentic culture. Lastly, advice those your wayward brothers that insist on identifying with the Igbo to please stop it. They are the biggest source of confusion to us(Ndigbo). Do these, and in no time those of us that are truly Igbo would have no reason whatsoever to identify with you, and peace shall reign for all. Flawed argument! There's a difference between Igbo-speaking and being Igbos. Are Nigerians who bear English names English? You people should leave Ikwerres alone. They've said they are not Igbos, let them be. |

fstranger3: You dont get it, do you?
There is a gulf of difference between a commissioner and a special adviser. Special advisers are ordinary tea boys employed to wake the governors up and fetch teas for them, they are not integrated into the government per se. Commissioners on the other hand are part and parcel of the government, and it takes trust and a certain degree of political maturity and liberality of the other for, in the case of Nigeria, the governors to employ people of other ethnic affiliations as commissioner.
On that basis alone, no one else has done what the Yorubas have done to enhance and advance project One Nigeria. You are 'yarning' NONSENSE. In govt circles, special advisers wield more power than commission. They even recommend the sack of a commissioner. |

PhysicsMHD: 1. The Binis, Urhobos, and Itsekiris did not have wars. Yes there was trade and intermarriage. I included Igbos having wars with the other groups. I guess you missed that. 2. Peter Ekeh is Urhobo, not Isoko, and he was not at all one-sided toward disclaiming an Igbo origin for the names. In fact he actually posted the article because of a somewhat obnoxious Bini historian who claimed that all of Southern Nigeria got the word Okoro from the Binis, because Benin happened to have ruled all or parts of every group which happens to have the name. He was actually countering a Bini "overclaimer" and expressing his own knowledge of the word within his own culture, which he is familiar with. He is not an Igbo man, nor an Igbo scholar so there is no way he could go in depth about the significance and usage in all contexts and ramifications of Okoro to the Igbos. I gave the 2 options that he's either Urhobo or Isoko. I also did mention that I could bet from my gut feelings that 'Okoro' is of Igbo origin. And I gave my reasons for feeling so. I need to really research that though. 3. Peter Ekeh is well aware that different groups in Urhoboland have different origin stories, some of which include Igbo origins, so don't assume what he does or doesn't know about his own name. I think I was a bit mistaken here. I thought he was arguing against the Igbo point of view. |

9ja voice: There is no need for this thread. but if i must say something, first the username uche2005 is not an ibo man talk more of yoruba,he is mr.Alj harem(a fulani man) in disguise.
Then as for the thread i can say divide this country into 2 and that is south and north. The north should be the current day north west and north east, while the south should be south east, south south and south west,Then there shall a refrendom for north central to determine where they will like to belong which by every indication that they will choose south instead of north.
OPTION 2 ,if my plan A fails then plan B will be this: divide nigeria into 4 countries and 1:North or Arewa(NE and NW) 2:East or Biafra(South east and south south) 3:West or Oodua(south west with kwara state and some part of kogi) 4:North centra(all north centra including remaining kogi) With this there won't be any more troubles. Honestly, someone did say that Alj Harem was a Yoruba pretending to be a northerner. Now he's up with an Igbo ID behaving like an Igbo. The dude is some kind of a fraud. SMH. |

fstranger3: Now, if you have any ounce of self respect, you will prove your assertion. If anything, it is Edos that are trying to claim us and we have always, from the Ooni of Ife to the ordinary Yoruba on the street, tried to emphasize our differences. Go read Professor Ade Ajayi's book. Even here on NL, try reading Physics Post, get a tutor, preferably a native speaker because Physics syntax might just be too much for your Igbo brain, careful analysis of posts on the relevant subject would impress it upon you that we do not like to claim people.
PS: That said, if claiming people into your already wretched ethnic group help you psychologically, by all means continue to do so Big lie! An investment amounting to about $3.5 billion in the SE is SIGNIFICANT by all measures. [b]However, this will not be the first time an amount of that magnitude has been injected into that zone( among others). Maybe not directly but over the years, that has been increased investment in most every zone, yet most of those remain largely underdeveloped and overly corrupt. Or is the government doing that already? How? You care to provide any proof(s) for the bolded? When and who? |

Your arguments are really flawed. Every shared word has an original source if you trace it well. Ojo(definitely Yoruba origin) Obasi(Ibibio origin) Olorogun(likely of Yoruba origin from the way it's constructed. Many Yoruba words look like that. E.g olorioko, olowo, olomo, etc) |

Me_Aboki:
Nothing new or strange, the writings have been on our currency since independence and merely represent the value of that currency in Arabic - nothing more nothing less - and I am sure you would agree that this simple act has not Islamized the country since then.
If only you could look beyond your irrational bias and did a quick research, you would have found that it was introduced at the time of independence to assist majority of literate northerners who could only read Arabic and not English, to be able to decipher the value of the newly independent Nigerian currency; and had remained a tradition till today.
By your way of thinking, Muslims could equally turn around and reject the alpha numeric characters of English, since the English are predominantly Christians. Should that happen, wouldn't you be among the first to regard such position as extremist and intolerant ?
Now, can you honestly look into the mirror and tell us you are not acting exactly just the same Keep lying through your teeth. The naira currency was introduced in 1973? Why should consideration be given only to northerners who are illiterate in English? My granny never spoke a word nor could read in English till she passed away, why were the values of the currencies not written in other nigerian languages people like her could read? |
