CultureRe: Which Igbo Dialect Do You Like The Most by excanny: 9:46am On Feb 08, 2011
My first preference would be Onitsha dialect. Sounds so sweet to the ears. I wish every Igbo I could speak like that in public.

Secondly, I think I'll do with Nnewi.

But generally most northern Igbos speak a more pleasant-sounding Igbo.

Funny enough I've been trying to change my way of speaking to the Onitsha dialect unsuccessfully for many years. lol. Maybe I need to get my arze down to Onitsha for a couple of months(I hope I find the time for that though)

You cant teach me my alphabet
The 'p' in Yoruba pronunciation does not carry a 'k' both in writing and pronunciation.

I never wrote that it carries a 'k'.

This was my comment:

excanny:
Is the sound of 'p' the same in English as it is in Yoruba? No.

Yes O!!! You give them a yard and before long, they have taken a mile off you.
I suppose this is why northerners butchered them, periodically so they don't get carried away. grin
I cant believe that someone feed by a woman's bosoms would type this kind of crap. Are Igbos the only nigerians to have been killed in the North? Are Yorubas and others not also being killed in conflicts in the North? Ode.
PoliticsRe: Igbos In Opc by excanny: 8:09am On Feb 07, 2011
I do not think any Igbo youth would consider joining OPC. They could form alliance with them through their own organization to protect Igbo interests, that's understandable.

Anyway, this rumour is unfounded and started by a northerner whose tactics has always been to pitch Igbos against Yorubas in order to remain relevant. No surprise!

@boldened
You are right that Dapo is written that way but wrong that it is pronounced as Dakpo. . .we pronounce the same way we write. If it was pronounced as Dakpo, then the spelling would have been D.a.k.p.o.

I think the 'k' you included is from the igbo alphabet/pronunciation cos I remember an igbo friend who wanted to write 'Pelumi' but wrote 'Kpelumi', another friend wrote 'Kponmo' instead on 'Ponmo'. . .when corrected, they both said they thought it is the right spelling cos they spelt it in an ibo way. All the same, if you call someone, Kpelumi, she will answer but will never accept it as a spelling of her name. smiley

@topic
I have asked ibos/igbos this same question but their answers have always differed. Someone even said the pple are igbo while the language is ibo undecided. So I just call whatever comes to my mouth.
You are getting it all wrong, funmi. Is the sound of 'p' the same in English as it is in Yoruba? No.

What Abagworo was saying is that pronunciation is always constant while spellings might differ. For example, I could write my name in arabic. The pronunciation remains the same but the spellings, and even the style of writing differs.

But really is it so difficult to spell 'Igbo'? When people say they find a thing offensive, what's there in showing a little respect?

I think I kind of like the binis when it comes to this. Where's Physics to help me out? What do you guys call Igbos? Oviigbo or something, ?

Too much efulefu  in Igboland. Chai! Alu emee!!!Akwu achaa n'odu igu!!! Nwoke aturu ime!!! I weep in Ekwulobia dialect. All right, ''Umu Ibo" and "Ndi Ibo", make una carry go.
I think Abagworo is quite right. Under normal circumstances, spellings are quite irrelevant and do not always determine how a word is to be pronounced. So on that note, I'll agree that 'Igbo', 'Ibo', 'Heebo', 'Ebo', etc are okay if and only if the proper pronunciation is maintained.

But I think the 'Igbo' is a better guide to the actual pronunciation of the language, people and place.

P.S  Unfortunately the 'gb' in Igbo and in the neighbouring Yoruba 'gb' are very different in sound. But it can be a close guide for anyone who  wants to learn how to pronounce it in Igbo.

Yoruba Man dies after doing anything for Money

A young man has lost his life
after allegedly donating his
sperm for ritual in a quest to
make money.
The man, Ahmed Rufai, who was
in his 30s, was taken by his wife,
Titi, to her elder brother,
Sulaimon Ojulari, for financial
assistance to help stabilise his
crumbling business. But
P.M.News learnt that Ojulari said
he could not assist him
financially.
He however, was alleged to have
told Rufai that he could give him
a soap which must be mixed with
his sperm. Ojulari was said to
have told the deceased that this
would turn his fortunes around.
The arrangement, it is alleged,
was for Titi to bring the soap
mixed with Rufai ’s sperm back to
Ojulari.
A few months after Rufai used
the soap, he reportedly started
suffering from a strange illness
which led to his death. But
before he died, Rufai, an auto
dealer had disclosed that he was
given a soap which his brother-
in-law said must be mixed with
his sperm. He said he gave his
sperm in a condom. This
prompted the family members to
engage in spiritual investigation.
Speaking with P.M.News, the
father of the deceased, Alhaji
Dele Rufai, who was in tears,
said: “We had no option than to
go spiritual and it was through
the medium that we were told
Titi, my daughter-in-law, was in
the best position to tell us what
went wrong with her husband.
“She was summoned to the
family meeting and there, she
confessed collecting my son ’s
sperm for her elder to use in
preparing a money making
soap. ”
Alhaji Rufai said Titi wrote a
written confession which reads:
“ It is true that I collected my
husband’s sperm for the
betterment of our future. My
own semen was part of the
package also. ”
The family members were able
to contact Titi ’s brother through
a phone number provided by
her. It was learnt that Ojulari
honoured the deceased ’s family
when he was invited by them to
a meeting and confessed that he
sent a money-making soap to
Rufai, which he instructed should
be mixed with his sperm. He
however, denied that he
collected the sperm from Rufai.
But the deceased’s father further
said that Ojulari promised to
facilitate the cure for Ahmed
Rufai ’s illness. But he died early
this month.
Both Titi and Ojulari are facing
trial at a Magistrate ’s Court in
Ipokia, Ogun State, and the
ruling on the matter is being

It seems the Igbos appear to be the easier group to bash in Nigeria, and the gang-up party usually have a good time doing this. Why dont you guys also worry about the many problems in your regions?

How can you call me a greedy person when you do not know me? You lump over 40 million people who you have no clue of in one negative description. You are just too senseless for me

As an Igbo person , I can authoritatively say that Igbos will only ever be united when they repent of their greed for money.

This greed is so bad that human life in the east has become cheaper than that of a cockroach.

My fellow igbos when you die , will you carry all that money you are hoarding with you ?

Proverbs 15:27 A greedy man brings trouble to his family, but he who hates bribes will live.

Proverbs 23:4 Do not wear yourself out to get rich; have the wisdom to show restraint.

Matthew 6:19 "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal

Mark 4:19 but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful.

1 Timothy 6:10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

1 Timothy 6:17 Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.
Another Igbo-impersonating fo-ol.

Really, i am surprise with the level of hatred shown on this thread.

First of all, i dont know if the igbo people on NL are different from my igbo friends out there, if they are, i will be very happy, if they are not i will start being careful cos my igbo friends out there and at work are marvellous set of people like everyone else and they have never felt insecure or complex about any thing.

I think the only set of people that lost the civil war are the NIGERIANS, everybody that died could have helped in one way or the other to build this country.

Lastly, to all my igbo folks on NL, you are not going to gain other tribes sympathy or adoration by trying to put up tribe-sensitive or tribe-centric issues here all the time. infact you are only going to make the distrust worse. ask yourselves do you want to solve the problems we have or do you want to add to it. topics like this only add to our tribal problems.

The past is for us to learn from and make corrections but what my igbo folks are doing here is like holding on to the past like their future.

Reading through the posts on this thread, I have to finally comfirm that most of you are uneducated, period. Education without understanding, reasoning equals nill (zero)!

So by saying 26 parties align with APGA means that an Igbo will be their flagbearer?
Is their no non-Igbo in AGPA?

When Chris Ngige ran under ACN in Anambra, did any Igbo cry foul? He actually finished 2nd. This shows the difference between the Igbos and the Yorubas. We are miles apart, no comparison!

Internet forums are becoming breeding ground for deranged people to purge their heart and then on an unknown date, actually carry out their threat like Jared Lee Loughner of Arizona so I'm waiting for the day fstranger will snap, though I know he's a coward.
I wonder why some people like putting words into other people's mouths and self-destructive in their thinking. No one said an Igbo should be governor. I only suggesting a deputy governor owing to the fact that such a choice might swing about of a lot of Igbo votes in any such ticket.
