Politics › Re: Hate Speech: UN, UK Reject Death Penalty by exminister(m): 8:20am On Nov 22, 2019 |
Digitiminimi: The United Nations and the United Kingdom have opposed the death penalty clause in the proposed National Commission for the Prohibition of Hate Speech Bill introduced by Senate Deputy Chief Whip, Sabi Abdullahi.
The UN described the death penalty as barbaric, noting that its inclusion in the bill was unacceptable.
According to the bill, any person who violates the law shall be liable to life imprisonment and where the act causes any loss of life, the person shall be punished with death by hanging.
But the spokesman, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, Mr Olusola Macaulay, in a telephone interview with our correspondent on Thursday, said the global body would not support the bill, noting that a UNESCO advocacy group, Media and Information Literacy Coalition, would soon meet with the National Assembly over the proposed legislation.
He said, “We are trying to pay an advocacy visit to the government and do some lobbying. There is a coalition working already, it was formed with the support of UNESCO.
“They are working to meet with the National Assembly to express their mind and possibly advise the government to have a different narrative to the issue of hate speech and fake news.”
Macaulay also said the UN would lobby the Federal Government on the legislation, adding that what was needed is public enlightenment and education about hate speech and not a law stipulating the death penalty for violators.
He said, “I’m not sure what the government needs now is a bill or an idea to shut down people or prevent people from being able to express themselves or express their freedom of thought or information. What I think the government should do more is to enlighten the people.” The UN agency said most Nigerians were ignorant of issues relating to media and information literacy, noting that a harsh law was not the solution to the challenge.
The global body noted, “Every human being has the right to life and you cannot cut off people’s lives just because someone has expressed his opinion. Nobody is saying hate speech is good.
Hate speech and fake news have been there from time immemorial and it is barbaric to say now that we want to hang people because they expressed their feelings or what they had in mind. So, censoring people or limiting people from participating in politics might not be the correct thing. As I said, the best thing to do is to educate the people.”
Macaulay queried the government for not holding politicians engaging in hate speech to account, noting that many of them had said things that could destabilise the country without being held liable.
The British Government said it supports the right of individuals to express opinions and peacefully challenge authority as an essential part of a free and open society, noting that it was following discussions around the proposed legislation closely.
Commenting on the bill in an emailed response to inquiries by The PUNCH on Wednesday, Her Majesty’s Government said while it takes a strong stand against hate speech which could incite violence and damage relationships within the society, it supports “the right of individuals to express opinions and peacefully challenge authority as an essential part of a free and open society.”
The statement signed by the Senior Press and Public Affairs Officer, British High Commission, Abuja, Chris Ogunmodede, said, “The UK government is following discussions around the proposed Prohibition of Hate Speech bill closely.”
It added, “We take a strong stand against hate speech, which can incite violence and damage community relationships within society. We also strongly support the right of individuals to express opinions and peacefully challenge authority as an essential part of a free and open society.
“The UK strongly opposes the inclusion of the death penalty in any piece of legislation, as a matter of principle.”

PDP has no choice than to "take am like dat".
We all witnessed how PDP did their many abracadabra too. In fact, APC is still a learner where PDP dey operate.
Let me give a few examples of past PDP wayo-wayo victories:
1. Wike "scoring" over 280,000 votes in his local govt (but awarded about 7k votes to his opponent) to be re-elected in 2019 when the presidential election didn't record a fifth of that votes in same LG.
2. PDP procuring court judgment to deny APC in participating in Rivers gubernatorial election.
3. Many instances during OBJ and GEJ where PDP would record 100% voters turnout in their strongholds and award 99% of the total votes to themselves. We saw the same trend even in 2015 and 2019 general elections.
4. I don't know if any party has killed innocent electorate for daring to align with an opposition party than PDP in Rivers, Bayels and othe SS/SE regions especially. We saw life photos of severed head of a grown APC leader (still struggling for life) in 2015. That gory image flashes back once in a while.
5. Maurice Iwu, working for PDP announced winner of presidential election while voting was still ongoing.
I can go on and on to prove that PDP deserves anything and everything that befalls it.
LASTLY, DEMOCRACY IS A SCAM FOR AFRICA, ESPECIALLY NIGERIA. WE ARE VERY MANIPULATIVE AND THAT'S HOW IT WILL REMAIN. LET NO ONE BE IN DOUBT! las Las u support cheating mumu |

FriendNG: Somebody sent his child to school along the line some unscrupulous elements abducted the child, transformed the child into something else, give him/her a new name and change his religion from Islam to Christianity.
After police rescued children, as a leader you did not share the grievance with parents, neither condemned the act, but all of a sudden you want to jail the parents when you have not jailed the Kidnappers.
As a leader you should try to stop the abduction first, charge the accused to court before you talk about the victims share of blame.
Where on earth did you got the information that these 9 kids were Kidnapped while begging on the street? Some were Kidnapped alongside with their mother, they later released the mother and left with the children. Can you call all these as an act of neglect
A child was on his way back home from school and he was abducted & someone tells me it is the parents fault.
Besides, these kidnappings weren't just random, they were well planned and organised. Instead of blaming the victims of this atrocious act, you're blame the community. This is like blaming a rape victim. Just because u are privileged to be a leader by an accident of birth doesn't give u the right to speak so arrogantly.
Indirectly he is giving the abductors an upper hand, because there is not a single sentence where he criminalised the abductors but he criminalised the victims.
I need someone to help me point out a single statement in the entire write-up where the accidental emir condemned the abductors.
*Just 1 is ok* so u know more than the émir abi, u pple love to give birth to children, u cannot take care of. |

post=77568468: It is so sad that this is one of the hideous vices the CRIMINAL party left us out of the 16 wasted years of the life of our nation.
The BILLION of DOLLARS that was supposed to be used to procure ammunitions for the Army to attack Boko Haram when they were just building up and bombing hundreds of people was shared among all the CRIMINALS that are ALL against Buhari now.
That the ATM called Dasuki (the head of the military) is still in detention and calling out all the names of the CRIMINALS he shared the money to while our soldiers are being slaughtered by Boko Haram like chickens.
All the people involved in this insurgency along with their supporters will NEVER ever know peace all the rest of their lives as President Buhari is doing all he can to right the wrongs.......
For those who may have forgotten, especially the wailing kids here on Nairaland, kindly joggle your memories with the following words on marble and you will agree with us that what happened in recent years was nothing but gathering of rogues, thieves and CRIMINALS.... Happy reading:
1. I acted based on Jonathan's instruction - Dasuki
2. I didn't give order - Jonathan
3. I collected 350M from Dasuki for consultation - Iyorchia Ayu
4. I only collected $30,000 from Dasuki not N100m - Bode George
5. I got N4.6b from Dasuki for spiritual purposes - Bafarawa
6. I got N650M from Dasuki for my Abuja burnt office - Thisday Obaigbena.
7. I got N2.1b from Dasuki for publicity - Dokpesi
8. I got another N100m from Yuguda he didn't tell me from where - Bafarawa.
9. I gave N100m each to Odili, Jim Nwobodo Bode George and others - Yuguda
10. The president asked me to change N10B to foreign currency for PDP delegates - Dasuki
11. My boss asked me to get $11M from the CBN - Dasuki's account officer.
12. I got order from above to pay Tompolo N13B for Maritime university land. - Nimasa DG.
13. 950m was shared in my house -- Shekarau
With all this looting and many more revealed, some people are still shouting no sign of change yet, they even say it's political persecution. Any politicians involved in the killings of our soldiers knowingly or unknowingly, in which ever political party they are in will have terrible ending. So shall it be.
God bless our gallant soldiers as they lay their lives on the line for PEACE to reign in our nation. so this Blame game still continue, apc Why always u. |
