Come to think of it, there is a wave of secessionist movement blowing accross the south east and south south zones of the country through radio biafra. The implications of this is that there is a strong tendency for the radio station to take advantage of the current situation.
This could lead to reprisal attacks just not from the aguleri people but from the entire igbo race.

To tell you the truth from what i am seeing, the IPOB movement(indigenous people of biafra) is well funded and is arming herself to the tooth. Stop presenting yourselves as potential enemies at this critical time that the maintenance of the country's peace and intergrity Is delicate and fragile.

The current joy that the igala people of ibaji LGA is deriving from the massacre of igbo people has blinded them from reality. This reality is that when the current situation is taken advantage of by radio biafra, the entire igbo race will descend on the igala people. This will lead to the blood bath and outcry of the igala people but lo and behold, no body will come to their rescue not even the nigerian government that has been unable to curtail the fulani herdsmen crisis. The government of benue and some other north central states has been crying blood over the fulani herdsmen crisis but to no avail.

The earlier you see yourselves as minority the better for you. Every attack on any part of the igbo nation is considered as an attack on the generality of the igbo people. The igbo nation will not keep quite for long seeing a minority massacre her people.

Since it seems you have never travelled out of the south east (just three states from the south south is bigger than the whole of south east), let me inform you that the south east is the smallest region in Nigeria political landscape, therefore the power allocation to the region is sufficient enough to serve them.

this is not about land size but population. Having land without many people living in it to use the light is useless.

Artisans in Aba, Abia State have protested against high electricity bills and poor electricity supply by the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, EEDC. The artisans who marched along major roads in Aba including the Azikiwe, Market and Tenant, Mosque, Kent and Georges streets, chanting slogans and denouncing the poor services allegedly provided by the EEDC.

The artisans who were also, shop owners carried placards which read; “No power, no payment,” “Let EEDC save our businesses, give us light and electricity is a vital tool to our work,” among others.

In an interview with South East Voice, the leader of the protesting artisans, Elder Festus Njoku said they were unhappy over the high tariff charged by EEDC even when there was little or no supply of power coupled with lack of maintenance of electricity facilities.
“For example, we have been on load shedding for more than three days now. We are not sure of the one day supply of electricity in a week. We are being charged high and estimated electricity bills even in areas that have not had light for more than two months. We pay for what we do not consume.

“Most of us are tailors, hairdressers, furniture makers. Before now, we paid around N5, 000 for electricity, but we are being charged between N24,000 and 30,000 monthly per shop even when power is not supplied. In our houses, we pay N10, 000 and you are not even sure of the electricity supply. We now use generators, since EEDC does not give us power. How can we survive under this type of harsh condition?” Njoku asked

They then urged the EEDC to improve on its billing system as well as stop issuing estimated bills and charge consumers for the energy they consumed monthly. “They can even stop their electricity supply since we now rely on generators to operate. We have petitioned the EEDC Aba, but they have not said anything,” Njoku added.

When South East Voice visited the business office of the EEDC on Ikot Ekpene road, a senior official of the company, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said that the problems of consumers in Aba and other areas in the district were being addressed.

Pls that documentary is an old one maybe, when we where still under phcn. Since eedc came to stay things have changed. Recently every two to three house have a mini transformer and the project area covered is 90%. So pls that documentary is a farce!

i live at aba and most times we have light for eithteen hours everyday, when bad twelve hours. Thesame case with owerri. If you go to anambra especially onitsha,akwa and nnewi they usually have light upto twenty hours a day. Enugu's own na die hard. I have noticed that eastern states normaly have light regularly than other zones in nigeria. Pls can someone tell me why?

The report also showed that the ranking of cities in Africa benchmarked against the ranking of countries was markedly different. Indeed, the attractiveness of cities on the continent is sometimes stronger than the country itself, and the cities, which are performing well are those that have succeeded with the challenge of diversifying their economy and creating an ecosystem conducive for the middle class to grow.

Military to deploy
gunboats to Niger
Delta creeks – Chief of
DefenseThe Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief
Marshal Alex Badeh has disclosed
that military gunboats would be
deployed to the creeks of the Niger
Delta region during the 2015 general
elections.

The deployment of the gunboats
according to him is to ensure that
peace prevail during the elections. Badeh who stated this at the
commissioning ceremony of 30
Gunboats procured by the Ministry of
Defence for the Joint Task Force
(Operation Pulo Shield) at the
Government Jetty, Yenagoa, Bayelsa state capital noted that aside being
used to wage war against crude oil
theft, it would be useful during the
2015 elections. While giving the assurance that the
boats and other resources allocated
by the Federal Government would be
judiciously deployed for the overall
economic benefit of the country, he
warned trouble makers to steer clear of the creeks during the 2015
elections.

“Aside from curtailing oil theft, these
boats would come in very handy
during the forthcoming general
election. Troops of the OPPS would
use these boats to dominate the
creeks as a warning to would be trouble makers. We all want peace to
prevail, so trouble makers, be
warned”.

Badeh commended the Federal
Government under President
Goodluck Jonathan “for its undying
commitment to providing the much
needed support to themed Forces of
Nigeria in the discharge of its constitutional responsibilities.” He pointed out that the Nigerian Navy
has continued to intensify its war
against oil theft which according to
him has curtailed the high level of
crude oil losses.

Badeh seized the opportunity to warn
“all those criminals who take pleasure
in stealing the nation’s crude oil and
vandalizing pipelines in the Niger
Delta to desist from such unpatriotic
acts.” Governor Emmanuel Udughan of
Delta who as the Chairman of the
Technical Committee on Crude Oil
Theft Prevention and Control of the
National Economic Council was the
Special Guest of Honour commended President Jonathan for his
determination to equip the military to
perform its constitutional role.

Udughan who noted that the effect of
crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism
is devastating in the Niger Delta
region said the support President
Jonathan has given the military has
enable them to curb the problems. He enjoined Nigerians to come out en

gains recorded in the last four years

Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)
yesterday expressed displeasure on
the dollarisation of the naira by
politicians, saying that it would soon
take action on that. This is as it
retained the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) at 13 per cent with private
sector Cash Reserve Requirement
(CRR) at 20 per cent while the public
sector CRR remained at 75 per cent.

It
also maintained the banking industry
liquidity ratio at 30 per cent. Briefing newsmen immediately after
the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC)
meeting in Abuja, Governor of CBN, Mr.
Godwin Emefiele, spoke against the
backdrop of a situation where
politicians, schools, landlords and host of others no longer demand for
payment in naira but in dollar.

According to him, the Nigerian
economy has now been partially
dollarised as some Nigerians now
transact businesses in dollar, thereby
putting a lot of pressure on the naira. To this end, he warned that the apex
bank would soon descend on those
transacting businesses in dollar,
adding that the naira remained the
Nigerian currency and should be used
for all transactions in the country.

For the commercial banks that indulge
in this malfeasance, he warned they
would soon be sanctioned if caught in
the act. He, however, promised to
continue to keep Nigeria’s external
reserve, which currently stands at $30 billion, robust. Emefiele also said part of the strategies
would be to block frivolous demand
for dollar, adding that banks have a lot
to do in this regard. “Reserves are at $30 billion right now.


Given the pressures and vulnerability
we have seen in the last couple of
weeks, I think it is a good level of
reserve and can support close to
about five to six months of import. And this is enough to support
business and the economy,” he stated. On the state of the naira, the CBN
governor said the closure of the Retail
Dutch Auction System (RDAS) window
of the foreign exchange market on
February 18, 2015 had unified the
foreign exchange market. Consequently, he said the naira
depreciated by N17.9k or 9.04 per
cent in the period under review as the
exchange rate opened at N180.1/US$
and closed at N198.0/US$, with a daily
average rate of N198.0/US$. On the exchange rate, the governor
said: “The exchange rate at the
bureau de change segment of the
market is N220, N221 to one dollar.

I
will like to say that that remains a
shallow market compared to the interbank market. In terms of
percentage in the interbank market, I
will like to say that it is very
insignificant. That market (black
market) deals mainly in transactions
that are not documented. And for that reason, we will not be looking at the
world’s outlook for the naira by
looking at the bureau de change rate.

But when you look at the outlook
based on the interbank, which is
today an average of N198 like I read in my statement, I believe that given
the pressure we have seen in the
market as a result of the drop in crude
prices, and the pressures that have
come with, adjusting the currency at
the level it is now at N198, I will say, is ok and sufficiently appropriate.

But I think that a number of actions
that will be taken, going forward, will
deepen the market, improve supply
into the market and look at areas
where demand pressures or demand
inefficiency can be cut and I am sure in due course, CBN will begin to take
actions that will look at areas where
people can make demands that will
not be effective, demands that are not
useful for the economy.” As headline inflation remained within
the 6.09 per cent band established by
CBN, the governor said the committee
noted with concern the gradual
increase in the year on year headline
inflation during the first two months of the year from 8 per cent in December
2014 to 8.2 per cent in January and
further to 8.4 per cent in February
2015.

“The underlying inflationary pressures
came largely from food (particularly
imported food) and the core
components. Food inflation rose from
9.2 per cent in December 2014 to 9.4
per cent in February 2015 while core inflation increased from 6.2 to 7.0 per
cent during the same period. The
major risks to inflation, the committee
noted, include elevated aggregate
spending in the run-up to the 2015
general elections, the likely higher import prices on the strength of an
appreciating dollar and possible food
supply shocks linked to insurgency
and insecurity in some major
agricultural zones of the country,” he
disclosed.

Considering the macro and micro
economic variables and the need for
the committee’s previous decisions to
be allowed time for their effects to fully
permeate the economy, Emefiele said
the MPC voted to maintain the current position as all 11 members
unanimously voted to retain the MPR
at 13 per cent; retain the CRR on
private sector deposits at 20 per cent;
retain CRR on public sector deposits at
75 per cent and retain the liquidity ratio at 30 per cent. On the interest rate outlook, the
governor said: “The stance now
remains tight and we will continue to
monitor liquidity in the system.

And as
we monitor the liquidity in the system,
particularly during this election season, in the course of time, CBN will
be taking certain actions. We don’t
know what it is but it depends on the
size of liquidity and how we see the
rate people use liquidity, either to
target the road sector of the economy or whether they use it for what I call
the unholy attitude of attacking the
currency. Depending on the direction
in which we begin to move, we will
react appropriately. But I think interest
rate outlook for now still remains tight in the main,” he explained.

President Goodluck Jonathan has assured that the South East zone would get an additional state to bring them at par with other zones in the country.

Jonathan who gave the assurance yesterday during a reception organised for him by the Imo State Council of Traditional Rulers in Owerri , the Imo State capital, said that if he is re- elected, he would ensure that the recommendation of the just concluded National Conference on state creation is implemented.

He said the proper thing to do is to ensure that the South East geo-political zone with only five states, gets additional one as recommended by the National Conference for equality before any other zone agitating for additional state is considered.

President Jonathan said he was elated for the massive support he had received from the zone, adding that he was sure that the same support would be given to him and his party in the general elections to enable him consolidate on the achievements of his administration so far.

“The South East is the support base of the PDP and I am here again to solicit for your supports and blessing in the Saturday election.

“It is a rare privilege for me because the South East has not supported anybody the way they have supported me since 2011 and in the next four years, I will ensure that the zone benefit more in terms of projects and most importantly, I will also ensure that the recommendation of the National Conference which has been adopted by the Federal Executive Council (FEC), is religiously implemented.”

He appealed to traditional rulers to mobilize their people to cast their votes for all the PDP candidates at all levels.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Imo State Council of Traditional Rulers and Chairman, South East Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze Cletus Ilomunanya said that they are solidly behind the re-election of President Jonathan, because he has done marvelously well in the last four years.

He appealed to the president to come and rescue the royal fathers in the state as they have suffered so much deprivation in the hand of those who do not understand how the traditional institution operates.

Boko Haram insurgents on
Wednesday dared the Nigerian
Armed Forces when they attacked
liberated Gamboru and a remote
community in the Borno State border
area, killing 10 people.

The terrorists who were frustrated and desperate,
according to a military source in
Maiduguri, attacked Nigerian border
town of Gamboru and Foyi, its
adjoining village, shooting
sporadically, the source, who is not authorised to speak, told Daily Sun.
Military authorities in Maiduguri
neither confirmed nor denied the
attack, but residents of Gamboru,
who are taking refuge in Fotokol, a
Cameroon town, three kilometres
from the Nigerian border, said they heard heavy gunshots on Wednesday
by 4.45pm and that it lasted for nearly
about an hour. “Some Cameroonian soldiers at
Fotokol were on the alert, some of
them were firing into Gamboru. Some
engaged the Boko Haram men in
battle and gunshots continued till

In a statement he issued in Abuja
yesterday, Fani-Kayode said: “What is
really giving the APC headache is its
failed expectation that Jonathan’s
government would be unable to
subdue the deadly Boko Haram insurgents in the north-eastern part
of the federation. “The APC had a field-day attacking
the government on the issue of
insurgency, hardly aware of the
determination by our candidate,
President Goodluck Jonathan to end
the problem once and for all. So far, the Nigerian military, in collaboration
with the West African forces, have
been recording unprecedented
successes in the campaign against
Boko Haram insurgents.

“The military had turned up surprises
in their anti-Boko Haram campaigns
so far with the ability to recover all the
territories hitherto lost to the
insurgents in Adamawa and Yobe
with only a couple or communities more to recover in Borno State,” he
said. Fani-Kayode accused the APC of
planning to hire foreign journalists
and media houses to discredit and
disparage the achievements of the
military and the Federal Government.

According to him, “this is to bring to the notice of the good people of
Nigerians that the APC is now
engaged in a last minute effort to hire
foreign writers to discredit and
disparage the government of
President Goodluck Jonathan and the achievements he has so far recorded
as we march towards March 28
presidential election. “It has always been the stock in trade
of the APC to run to the international
media for support after failing to
convince Nigerians that it has the
credibility and capacity to withstand
our presidential candidate in the coming election. “Past efforts by the APC to use the
international media against our
President had failed and will continue
