Car TalkRe: Mercedes Benz Thread by Eyop: 4:29pm On Sep 22, 2014
megastu: Hello House, Due to conversations in this thread, i decided to get a 1999 C180 from holland. The car just arrived. I will share the pictures. However, the issues i have is that 1. the mileage is about 380k, is this ok for a benz? 2. the remote key is refusing to respond, although i have gone to change the batteries of the remote. It worked from the port to where i parked it. Only for it not to work now.

The 3rd issue is that the car is low. I understand i can raise it a bit. Is this ok. Advice will be appreciated. Thanks
Congratulations bro,

(1) 380,000 mileage for a 1999 car isn't bad mostly for a Benz but mechanical aspect of the car matters most. I once saw a 1998 C230 in Cotonou that had mileage of 392k but Engine was super. The higher the mileage, the cheaper the car.

(2) Since you changed battery and it initially worked but stopped,i guess you should check if there's any rust on battery terminal(your remote). If a dead battery stays for too long,it can result to this type of problem or may be you didn't get the correct battery.

(3) I believe you can raise the car but i don't really buy such an idea but consult your mechanic for advise about this.

Cheers

auhanson: Rusting in Benz scares a lot of people, even auto professionals , but i bet you , its isn't a big deal. The secret of rusting in Benz is washing them and rinsing out regularly with water, mopping out the wetness(including all the cleavages and hideout) to dryness. With these, you will never experience rust affected areas in your Benz.

When you first bought your Benz, deal with the rusting hideout first, by thoroughly sanding out and respraying just these areas, then follow them up with the advice above and you will never relate your Benz with rust anymore. My first Benz for 8 years now before the recent accident, never had a single rust in any of the hide out because of this practice. Same with my recent Benz, of course i'm not expecting any rust too wit this formular, and she is always neat.
auhanson, what type of private Scanner will you recommend for a W204 Mercedes Benz user?

I feel GEJ would suspend it till after the elections.
I hope so but this 2015 C200 class doesn't look rugged to me and i guess this is a 4 cylinder engine. The 2012/2013 is da bomb cheesy
Car TalkRe: What Car Should A Young Man Get? by Eyop: 8:22pm On Sep 21, 2014
cne010: the brandnew is about 10m for the 2014 C class thanks to the expensive clearing.
Really? The #10million i guess is just for now and from next year after the addition of levy will be a disaster
Car TalkRe: What Car Should A Young Man Get? by Eyop: 7:44pm On Sep 21, 2014
Fulaman198: Yeah I love Sedans more too. When I start making an even bigger salary, I will buy a new 2015 C Class or 2015 Audi from UAE and have it shipped to Abuja (hopefully). That's my dream. In any case, my next car will be bought brand new. I don't know when it will be.
It's also my desire to drive a brand new(2014/2015) C class but it's very pricey but though buying either in Germany or USA will be ok but Clearing here in Nigeria isn't gonna be child's play. Even a certified(mileage less than 15,000) 2012 Mercedes C class should land here for about 7.5million not to talk of a brand new one.
Car TalkRe: What Car Should A Young Man Get? by Eyop: 7:28pm On Sep 21, 2014
Fulaman198: I like Mercedes design more, but Audi is really growing on me. With that said, As a man of 30 years old, I personally would go after either a 2015 Mercedes C Class or a 2015 Audi A4/S4.
Audi is cool but is all about choice anyway. I love Sedan more than SUV if not,the 2014/2015 ML350 should be the preferred choice. But I will make do with the W204 Mercedes C class 2012 and above wink

mdenigma: I also faced the same dilemma when I was ready for a car. Here's how I arrived @ a decision.
I didn't want a 'common' brand such as the camry and accord.
I also didn't want unecessary attention from relatives and colleagues who would think you've hit the jackpot cos u drive a benz or a 'jeep'
Maintenance and reliability is also key
I also needed decent power (so a 4 cylinder was out of d mix)
I went online 2 narrow my options
Finally I visited the dealer for a test drive
I settled for a 2008 lexus es350
I'm very pleased with my choice
Luxury,power,class, reliablity and distinction.
I'll recommend the 2010 edition where some exterior and interior upgrades were made
Cheers
Lol...so people still carry such mentality that driving a Benz means one has hit jackpot? Well, even your 2008 Lexus es350 is another jackpot hitter for those that really knows the worth of that Machine. grin

Siena: Stature? That has to do with body build. What does body size have to do with the sort of automobile one buys? I guess you mean "status".

And just so you know, Wizkid is an established entertainer, and does NOT live with his parents, or depend on them. So your "friend" is NOT directly comparable.
@ Siena,I guess what he meant was body size like you rightly mentioned. His explanation was someone that's short/smallish as Wizkid won't fit in well in an SUV like Nissan Amanda compared to a CRV because the Amanda looks bigger than him.

pansophist: Blaming the government is not an escapism, if the government has made Nigeria better in terms of infrastructures, jobs and other social amenities that will make the mass comfortable, then I see no reason why Nigerians will commit much heinous crime abroad in order to obtain residnecy. Emigration from Nigeria also started skyrocketing as things begins to go bad in the country, it was not in this case in the past 30 years, so why now? why the sudden desperation of change and mentality?

The country you mentioned as a defense to your post doesnt support whatt you are trying to prove.. Botswana population is about 2million, Botswana is so small and Botswana is one of the good countries to live in Africa, their passport can take you to many countries and the government are up to their task. Zimbabwe in the second hand is a very small country too compare to Nigeria, their government trying to make life comfortable for its citizens and are not in the same league as Nigeria.

Papua new guinea is also a very bad example too, PNG are scattered all over Australia in detention camps, seeking asylum and trying anything possible to leave the country, they dont have to go to Europe, US before you are convinced that they do not have the same mindset of fleeing if given the opportunity. PNG is geographically closer to Australia, and just like Mexicans flee to US at any given opportunity, the same applies to citizens of PNG too.

If you combine the population of the three countries you mentioned, it is slightly over the population of Lagos state (one of the 36 states of Nigeria) alone, so why compare them to Nigeria?

I reiterate, if Nigerian government make Nigeria a favourable place to live, Nigerians wont be destroying the image of the country offshore, it is years of malfuntioning that has gone so bad that the average mindset is to immigrate legally or illegally, and it is common with the folks in the lower rung of the social ladder. The citizens are to be blame too, but they are just a victim of a society that care less about them.
Another good points from you too. 1 bottle of Satzenbrau(skirt and blouse) and 1 plate of point and kill for you cool
TravelRe: The World's Most Powerful Passports. by Eyop: 11:04am On Sep 21, 2014
Chinom: Blaming the government is escapist. People who do not want to take responsibilty for their actions. I can write 10 pages on why you should not blame the govt for the fact that Nigerians ruined the image of the country. But i don't have te time for that. I just have a few questions for you. How many people from Zimbabwe, Botwsana, Papua new guinea have you come across in US, Uk or Europe. Those are not particuarly rich countries.
Coming closer to home; how many young Hausa men do you see in US, Uk or Europe. The mentality of the people of Southern Nigeria killed our Nigerian passport. Desparation and greed was the reason most of them abused their visa conditions. If every Nigerian that travelled abroad respected their visas, we will still have access to many countries visa free. You will be shocked to know what most Edo, Yoruba, Igbo and Warri people had to go through inorder to obtain that US or UK passport. The young man from Zamfara or Yobe is not that desparate or greedy. They are content with their life.
Do not put the blame on the govt. The honest truth is that most us in the south were desparate to move to the west because of pressures from our immidiate sorroundings
Besides, embassys DO NOT give visas to poor people. Those Nigerians that stayed 6 years on a visitor's visa presented themslves as rich people at the various embassys. So the arguement that Nigeria is a poor country, hence the devalued passport does not hold water.
1 bottle of Heineken and 1 plate of Fresh fish pepper soup for you cool.

HealthThis Will Make You Never, Ever Want To Clean Your Ears Again by Eyop(op): 8:41am On Sep 21, 2014
The question: Is it true that I shouldn’t use cotton swabs to clean my ears?
The answer: Whether it was mom or grandma who said it first, she was definitely right: You probably shouldn’t put anything in your ear that’s smaller than your elbow.

But in order to understand why you don’t need to swab out the ol’ ears, we first need to understand why we have earwax to begin with. That gross gunk, known medically as cerumen, is actually there for protection. “The purpose of earwax really is to keep your ear canal clean,” says Douglas Backous, M.D., chair of the hearing committee of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNSF) and director of hearing and skull base surgery at Swedish Neuroscience Institute in Seattle.

Not only does earwax help to keep dust and dirt away from the eardrum, it also provides some antibacterial and lubricating perks. And — one of the body’s many wonders! — your ears basically clean themselves. Once earwax dries, every motion of your jaw, whether that’s chowing down on lunch or gabbing away with friends, helps move the old earwax out of the opening of your ear (much like as if it were riding an escalator, says Backous).

The problem, then, is when we think we’re smarter than the systems our bodies have had in place since the beginning of time, and go poking around in those cerumen-laden ears of ours. Sure, that cotton swab looks tiny enough, but it’s actually pushing earwax deeper into the ear (after shoving it off of that escalator), where it gets stuck in the parts that don’t clean themselves, he says.
Earwax trapped there also brings with it fungus, bacteria and viruses accumulated in the outer ear, potentially leading to pain and infection, says Backous.

Pushing earwax deeper inside can also block the ear canal, leading to hearing loss, or, if you push it even farther, a ruptured ear drum — which, if that episode of “Girls” is to be believed, seems more than a little bit painful.

Every year, about 12 million Americans head to their doctors with “impacted or excessive cerumen,” a really gross-sounding way to say they’ve got serious earwax problems. All those checkups lead to about 8 million yearly earwax removal procedures performed by medical professionals (a.k.a. not the ear candle specialist at the salon on the corner), according to the AAO-HNSF.

Ears really only need to be cleaned — even by a medical professional — if they feel full or you notice changes to your hearing that could be related to waxy buildup. The AAO-HNSF feels so strongly about not sticking cotton swabs in your ears that it released an official position statement about earwax removal, for both physicians and patients. And even the website for Q-Tips, arguably the only most popular brand of cotton swabs, advises to use the product “around the outer ear, without entering the ear canal.”

Yes, we know what you’re thinking, with that grossed-out look on your face: You can’t just stop cleaning your ears. Well, that’s only because you’ve created a vicious “itch and scratch cycle” for yourself, says Backous. The more you rub the skin of your ears, the more histamine you release, which in turn makes the skin irritated and inflamed — just like how that mosquito bite gets itchier the more you scratch it. Plus, because of the lubricating nature of earwax, removing it can simply make your ears drier, motivating you to keep sticking swabs in there in a mistaken attempt at relief.

For those of you who just can’t leave your ears alone, Backous recommends a little at-home irrigation. A few drops in each ear of a mixture of one part white vinegar, one part rubbing alcohol and one part tap water at body temperature should do the trick. (Too cold or too hot and you might feel dizzy, he warns.) But the bottom line? “I can tell you,” says Backous, “there is nothing good about putting anything in your ear.”
