oga you don't know what you are saying
really... So after going abroad for PhD, you're going to take vendetta orders from your fellow lecturer who probably got his PhD in one mushroom school in Nigeria, You must be very Naive if you think Adults with a multitude of problems sit down to think about students all day.

not when he is the hod and very influential among the lecturers
except for mushroom private schools and state schools, that hire BSc and MSc holders against the directive of NUC, this can't work in Public universities where most staffs have PhD's and won't even try to take vendetta orders from their fellow PhD holder, after all "who e EPP"?.

It seems like you have never had issues with a lecturer. My own promised me that he would make sure that i dont make first class
Nonsense... Considering that the average undergrad does >120 units in the university... how will one lecturer prevent you from having first class
Jobs/Vacancies / Re: What Will You Do If You Get A Job But The Salary Is Low? by EZEIGBO1OFIMO: 7:46pm On Dec 14, 2017
Low is relative; if you have small change left (No matter how little) after you take out compulsory expenses, then Manage the Job and be on the look out for a better one. If instead, you end up in negative after subtracting expenses from Wages, then forget what any body tells you, you're better off doing manual labour in a construction site.

Hello All,

I want my former Boss to recommend me for my application, but he is saying he cannot use his companies letter head for me.

If i wouldnt mind for him to do the recommendation without the letter head, we are go to go.

I want to ask if it would be an issue for me during my application.

Thanks

Except your boss is a very very high flier in the Industry, or some Head honcho in a research project , then you would score low in the recommendations Tab simply because, your other applicants would be bringing in RECs from Professors, Professor Emeritae, Dons, Research Heads, Head of depts in super agencies (NASA, CERN, NASA JPL etc). If you can , get the required recommendation of your lecturer (preferably with a PhD) , then you can add your former boss' own as an appendage .

Bro... Good afternoon. Now, the thing is, If I woke you up after you have slept for 12 hours due to previous night of drinks, would you remember all these answers right there?; Chances are that you wouldn't, and the VO will clearly perceive this as a rehearsed answer (which will tick them off).
Now, you're going for CIS, which sounds fancy and Nice cheesy, you need to instantaneously think of the possibilities of your course. For Example, Up until recently, our very own CBN has not given a sh*t about Electronic payments and transfers, but due to recent spate of attacks, Lazarus, wannacry, There are some plans to reformat our NIBSS(Nigerian Interbank settlement System) to move out of the scope of Local payments and stand as watchdog for international ones and I bet they would need pioneer CIS guys like you.
Another Example, Our very own Andela has been receiving massive millions in dollars for funding, while they have an overflow of Web, App, Full stack developers etc, they obviously lack the Back end army to be filled with CIS people (hopefully), so there again a wide open opportunity for you.
Another Example: The world is going open source with a bang ; Laravel, Linux, Arduino, ARM, CUDA for GPU's etc etc, and as companies adopt open source materials they would need Quality assurance Techies, Testers, Systems analysts Blah blah blah... That's where you would definitely fit in this century
Another fine Example: Nigeria is finally catching on with the automation fever of the century, and as manual labor is phased out, High level Tech labour is required ,and currently provided by expatriates, so there's somewhere to fit in.
I thought of a these examples off the top of my head without rehearsing, and trust me, if you wake me up at Night I would come up with a dozen more seamlessly cheesy. You don't have to a whiz to know these things. Your school probably has a career page to see budding career opportunities for your field, Your alumni base on LinkedIn could give you a sneak peek of what life after graduation has been like for those before you. There are numerous forums like stackoverflow et al where trends in computing and technological fields are discussed daily. But overall, you have to let it flow naturally. BE CHILL!!!.. BE RELAXED!!!

Hello Everyone! Please i just finished my year 1 at uni ilorin, will i be able to use my year 1 result to apply for transfer credit at a university in the U.S or in canada. Thanks
Well, some not so great schools would allow that, but you're better off starting all over again. We do a lot of secondary school coursework as freshmen here In Nigeria, so You won't have matching course requirement with most schools.

I'm a HND holder planning to apply for post graduate diploma.., but am seeing Post Baccalaureate....
what is the difference?

and someone should please suggest should that for post graduate degree..

thanks....

Bros, this isn't Naija where there is discrimination against your diploma; your OND+HND == BSc. What you need to do first is evaluate your transcript for correct conversion. And then you can apply for MSc. with some sweet Federal $$ in funding grin grin grin. .... did you finish with distinction or upper?

the TOP 200 schools on the USNews Ranking have a large share public funded and private schools with meteoric endowments. also every university of __________ , and __________ state University are most likely to be state schools with access to those sweet federal $. Also most professional associations in Uncle Sam help with a list of nice schools with great funding; you can start there.

Hey guys, I'm new on this thread. Thanks to whoever started it, and the various contributors.

I have started my application to some US graduate schools, and they want me to provide a bank statement and/or support letter from my sponsor before I can submit my online application.

The thing is, the minimum amount that must show on the bank statement for some of the schools(department) is $52,000 which is between 19-18 million naira.

I don't have that kind of money, neither do the people I know can stand as sponsors.

What can I do? I am genuinely at a loss of what to do.
Step 1: look for "PUBLIC" and "FEDERAL FUNDED" schools in the US, and leave all these multi syllable fancy private schools alone
step 2: Write the GRE and aggressively look for schools in step 1 that give some type of funding, TA, RA, GA, GTA, anything at all to lessen the $$ burden
step 3: apply

What you are saying is exactly through, here in South south most people don't know about it. I had to meet one of my lectures ( Yoruba) for advice where he told me about seeking for scholarship if not I wouldn't be aware. Since then I had a positive mindset about it. Meanwhile those thinking that having a first class or higher 2:1 will land them a big industry, through these medium one can achieve whatever he want with a good advisory.
Thanks

I'm not actually shading you, but I've seen situations where some first class dudes in some universities, never held a single scholarship award, or didn't even know what an aptitude test was either, all they ever cared about was the good ole GPA and an intending civil service job. In public universities here in the south west, the social scene is vibrant enough that student s get the required exposure of what corporate life and life in general looks like on the outside.

LMAO...you are not ready. I am sorry, and you had a first class? Please be proactive. A good way to start is to read the last thread at least to get the info you need or google. Asking that question shows you are lazy and unserious
I am highly suspicious of some first class from some state and private unis in Nigeria, the overall student environment breeds the one eyed man , king of the blind situation .

And you guys think it is that easy?. A lot of people that finally completed their PhD in the US moved to Canada to become a permanent resident (Canada will give you straight PR comparing to America). When y'all come here, you will realize that becoming PR isn't as easy as A,B,C regardless of class of visa or type of occupation. It takes years and years of waiting.

A lot of folks discourage others from coming to America and when you check their background, you will realized that they also went through something like that in the past (probably had to marry an ugly old white lady to get their PR eventually when they get tired of the mountains of re-application for work authorization). Now that they are citizen and been living here for years, they start acting like they were there when the US constitution got written. They act more American than even the naturally born Citizens.

All we are saying on this forum is advise people about their situation, let then know the repercussions of the decisions they are about to make, give them other options they can explore and wish them all the best. That's all.
I don't know if it easy, and honestly don't care if its easy, the people I referenced to in my example are not your average Nigerians like me (yes, even me, no smart), they got multiple offers from different countries, they are the intellectual cream of the crop, for them they get easy migration, no matter how many trumps fill the white house, or right wing parties take over the western world; and honestly, Twoods, kind of fits the class of people I described.
EDIT: as the world kills of manual labour, there is constant need for highly specialised minds in tech, there was an article in the economist, where Data science and AI post graduate student all got jobs 6 months to graduation, Doctoral students in stem have 36-48months OPT extension, and in some cases, can file for themselves, and where they find themselves in academia or not for profit research, they are not counted in the H1-B quota

I'm not twoods, or know him personally; but the people like him, I know who are citizens started like this.
1) Awesome education profile from naija; First class, 2.1, >4.0GPA
2) Gained admission to A/B+/B- schools for a doctorate, in STEM related field
3)spent 4+ years on a fully funded PhD contributing to scientific advancement
4)Completed the doctorate, and got snapped up some fortune 500's
5) H1-B filed
6) Then comes The green card
7) and finally, the blue passport.
