CockpitSense:I don't want to sound like a pessimist here, but don't put too much hope on MCF Scholarship; the partner schools are pretty hard to get in with single digit admit rate. The people who are taken from Nigeria usually go through USAP at the Embassy here, while the Kenyans have some sort of partnership with Barclays bank and USAP also. the only set with >3 nigerians was the first set, since then very few Nigerians get in, and those who do have stellar creds( olympiad, 9A's WAEC, etc). 1 Like |

4gunners:the bolded requires deep introspection, far too many graduate students (PhD) are miserable human beings. are you ready to spend 5-7 years working ~80 hours per week on some dissertation, knowing that engineers out there even your fellow immigrant are making 6 figures comfortably while you slave away in some research lab, are you ready to be frustrated by your own work, and having it rejected from top journals and/or conferences even when you have worked long enough on it. I suggest you read PhD grind by phillip guo(it's free) and see what the life of a normal PhD resembles. if all that scares you then jejely go for an MsC. 7 Likes |

Verovera:The most important thing to consider during graduate school is finance (forget about passion, you have lived 20+years of your life, time to be realistic is now). Since the education option provides not sensible financial path, this is no hard feat, you should take the biology option. Now if you love teaching so much, you should try to take the TOEFL exams and ace it with a reasonable speaking score, after that, start mailing members of the faculty in your line and ask about the possibility of getting TA positions (you'd most likely get, because very few graduate students are very enthusiastic about teaching). with the TA you can build a relationship with the professors in charge of the course and get other good funding packages with sensible stipends. If you have the time, you can add education modules to your coursework and volunteer in available teaching programs during your summer time to "teash dem oyinbo shudren". . Last words; Immigration is tightening up, and us has an abundant teaching pool, so it would be almost impossible to get sponsored for a teaching role, the new unicorn now is STEM, and with a biological degree with statistical concentrations and a little programming skill, you are likely to land a job before graduation. when you finally get PR , you can decide to then go and teach and not have worry about money or your future. PS: To presume to point a man to the right and ultimate goal— to point with a trembling finger in the RIGHT direction is something only a fool would take upon himself. Mgrichboss:Unlike Nigeria and the British higher education model, the US allows for generality and non-specialization during undergraduate study. What all that big grammar means is that you can choose to test the waters during your first two years, and when your convictions are well founded you can decide on a major. Also if your maths and further maths is average or weak, and you do not have interest in hardware (basic flip flops, TTL, semi-conductor Physics et al), i would advise against computer engineering as it is more hardware than fancy code(like movies depict). Go to http://ocw.mit.edu (MIT's curriculum is comprehensive enough) and look through the curriculum, lecture notes , lab, quizzes, and available videos of all the majors you have listed, if you like what you see, then move on to google, and quietly do your further research. PS: you can also go to indeed.com and see the jobs that are willing to sponsor a work visa, and use that as a reality check. 3 Likes 2 Shares |

fvictop:Oga, there are over 5000+ colleges in trump country , this isn't naija, where everybody is going to unilag or oau. If you're concerned , send a mail to the department, if they dont answer, load up your phone with credit and make that international call, if you're unsatisfied, go to linkedin, and look for present or former graduate students and ask them questions straight up without formalities, if you can't still find, go to gradcafe and check the timelines for admission. This is your life and you should be proactive about it. 7 Likes |

Amkc:No reasonable school would admit you for a masters CS program. you are lacking a lot, i mean a whole lot of prerequisites that even a an undergrad CS freshman is expected to have. If you're looking to make an IT switch, you can try Tech related options in your field of geology, probably something to do with simulation, signal processing, image sensing, Transducers/sensors et al. While you're waiting for the admission process, you can start getting your hands dirty with relevant programming languages (NumPy, MATLAB, C++ etc). It'll probably boost your chances for getting funded, by joining an active research Lab. |

adepeter2027:No mathematician has proved the Riemann Hypothesis, we may as well just believe it's false. This is the problem of all pseudo-intellectual atheist on Nairaland who take all matters as either black or white. As i stated in my previous post, no one can prove or disprove the existence of god , along with a myriad of metaphysical constructs. and the pursuit of such endeavors are a waste of time. I'm not here to win an argument about the existence of god. again I say, if your belief systems is founded on the inability of your fellow man of sound mind and body to lay proof to his claim, then you have a problem. as for the cat on the table, i can write a whole treatise on whether or not it is on the table, but like the proof or disprove of god, it is an exercise in futility |

adepeter2027:so the reason you're an atheist is because the religious devotee cannot prove that there is god. you imply that the basis of your believes is the absence of proof in other people's belief system, then you my friend has a very big problem. |
