Thankfully the US process does not discriminate against pregnancy or family life ............ There are many working mothers or schooling mothers out there who cope with a newborn and same with New or existing fathers so this is a normal scenario . Millions have coped before him and millions will cope after . F2 Visa was also put to cover family life and dependant

Hello to those in the USA, (Walspring, imperiux, Lagosismyhome
My wife (F2 Visa Holder) is coming to the USA next month to join me (Am F1 Visa Holder). She is pregnant (5 months).
Apart from my I-20 that stipulates I have Graduate Assistantship funding from my University, I hope she does not have to hold any additional document at the POE?

Any advice

Hehe. Most people don't know how far behind and hopeless our situation is. Hence the optimism.

I don't know much about economics to say anything useful. I know you're right about how globalization impedes industrial growth in underdeveloped countries and that globalization was in its infancy when Asian countries were growing. HOWEVER, comparative advantage or not, we need to start somewhere because I don't think we can ever become a developed nation without going through an enlightenment and industrialization age.

Only two ways of skipping an industrialization age that comes to mind (in my limited imagination) is: some mind blowing tech to create finished goods out of thin air which is unlikely, and the use of highly developed AI to do our manufacturing for us. The AI might as well rule/discard us as we would be utterly useless!

Anyways, I don't think any of these would happen. I also don't think we'll ever get to an enlightenment & fully industrialized age within the life time of Nigeria as a sovereign nation. I think we are already on an inevitable path to, yet again, become a colony and, this time around, be fully absorbed into a more developed nation or federation. I'm not an optimist! grin grin
most definitely true cheesy cheesy. when our folks are all bout "who book EPP".. 'life is all about the money ooh" etc etc, its hard to get optimistic...

I don't even support the banning of rice.

I guess your own idea is that these Nigerians take their skills to countries that are already doing it? No need to waste time doing anything in Nigeria.

If the Chinese people had followed your argument, they would not be where they are today. They are not even being innovative by doing something new, but see where they are....but the black man always feels he has lost the race before he even puts on his shoes.
The Chinese did not innovate the product, they innovated the economics; Hinging on Large scale production techniques to beat down price to the barest minimum possible. The reason I use comparative advantage more instead of Innovation. I prefer to always be realistic, as see things as they are. We have exactly no comparative advantage yet in this country, and probably won't in a long time. I think the problem here is that you're not a science person, hence the positivism. Now , what does students have done is
1) Get the Hardware parts from China or USA
2)Piece the Hardware together functionally
3)Get open source flight control and aerodynamic firmware online.
4) Copy and paste this code on whatever flight controller, that they have bought and installed on their assembled hardware.
5) Get open source monitoring and tracking system to use for realtime testing and usage.
.
.
What they have simple done is CTRL C + CTRL V with exactly zero input; they did not see it fit to add customized periphery e.g Image processing DSP for maybe agricultural systems, Security etc. There's no comparative advantage whatsoever in what they have done. and honestly the only way people improve is when they DO NOT celebrate mediocrity . Fine, they probably deserve an A in their project score, but to come and expect adulation and highest of praises, na lie grin grin grin grin

we are not doing it to pass anybody, it is not a competition. We are doing it to help ourselves.

If more of this was encouraged, eventually funding will come. This defeatist behaviour is why we never go far in life.

No funds are coming, so, leave it. We should encourage it, make noise so that the right people will hear.

Everybody will eventually leave Nigeria to countries where the right noise was made and where will that get us? Nowhere.
You prefer to see it from an empathic point of view, and that is just fine, because we all need that positivism. But in this era of casino capitalism and big business, the world is really one cruel place, and that is why African countries would probably never have their own industrial revolution with Globalism and free trade being championed. Your argument reminds me of our rice policies in Nigeria, we don't have the comparative advantage to plant rice to sufficient international standards, yet we ban rice importation, and in the end, what we have is endless smuggling, re-bagging, and state governors doing photo ops with foreign rice, claiming it is homegrown. The simple fact that a man in Rwanda can bring German machines to his village with the tap of his phone buttons, means that if you can't keep quiet and out-innovate the Germans, then all your noise will end up in debilitating hunger grin grin

It's not a big deal for them, but it should be. This is a country that hardly produces anything, they have the chance to, but some people think it's not a big deal, so why bother?

Mentality that has stagnated us
it's not a big deal, because we don't have cost advantage. I remember trying to build a High voltage DC power supply in school, and the whole thing was costing me upwards of $100.. I went to Alibaba(Chinese retailer), and saw an even better and safety standards approved unit for $4.. yes $4... Now why wouldn't anybody in his right sense go for a factory assembled god damn cheap alternative. There's really nothing that we'll do, that is new under the sun, or that will give us a competitive edge over well established giants ... cheesy cheesy.. this is casino capitalism and honestly no one gives even the slightest f*cks grin...go to http://hackaday.io, and see mad ass projects by Nigerians and people all over the world, and even they don't see it to make noise cheesy

FUTO is apparently the only University of Technology that its students can actually construct these items

I hardly see other Universities of Technology students who have designed drones, tricycles or anything technological
you don't see other universities, because it is not considered so much of deal, as it is already existing technology. Some Unilag students had their own version of an Unmanned aerial vehicle sometime around last year; some OAU guys did some image processing Task assisting drone... etc etc.. This statement here is on Nairaland i see this .... I know so many born and breed Nigerians that only speak one language which is English . Most of the schooling in Nigeria are in English . Is there any primary or secondary school that teaches all the subject is a language other than English

So not sure why I see this comment that English is not the native language in Nigeria. ..... sorry to divert off topic but I always wondered about that comment
grin grin grin, the caveat phrases to my comment included
.(1) "Most Nigerians" (2) "Third World Country situation ".
.
.
1)A whole Lot of Nigerians including me, had their language foundations built in the " not so great" public schools of Nigeria. It is not new knowledge that Nigeria's public school teachers have quite the horrible track record, and most wouldn't even pass a basic competency test (case in point, Kaduna state cheesy). In this situation, I really wouldn't expect anyone of my comrades from public schools to have this internationally accepted command of the English language; there would be no doubt to their intelligence, but the English fit come out "one kain" grin.
2) Bar the corporate sector and urban life in big cities like Lagos and abuja, A whole lot of Nigerians have no use of the English language; from the bright eyed eager soul in ariara market, to the busy streets of idi-oro, in mushin, to the open markets of dutse in Jigawa, most Nigerians are conversing in pidgin and their native tounge, and no chaos is coming out of it.

.
.
.
Above all, the "who e EPP" culture in Nigeria is putting the final nails in the coffin of English language In Nigeria; The harsh economic realities have put us all in survival mode, if it doesn't bring money of hedonistic gratification, then "e no make sense". " if your grammar no bring money who e EPP", cheesy, "shey olamide know English no" etc. and this isn't just English language, there really isn't any incentive for intellectual development in Nigeria, we all just want to make money anyhow as e be, get married and pump out babies to continue the cycle.
Finally, when a young Nigerian, who has had to survive all his life, has some difficulty with the English language, it really isn't his/her/xe/their fault; the jungle has no use for Language grin grin grin grin grin.

One thing i have to say is your looks matter a looot. These people have to interview a lot of people every day. They dont have time for story. One look at You, And they already know if you are real or fake.

I have had to drum this over the years and more especially to rich kids like you, The consular officers at Walter carrington are not looking at your dressing, a whole lot of them get passed around from countries to countries, they have seen the good bad and ugly when it comes to human apparel, so they are not you and other condescending Nigerians cheesy who are going to look down on a man just because he has decided no to "dress well" according to your standards.
Then your spoken English as well.

One guy was shouting at a V.O today. Saying something about coming back home to make Maggie... lol. It was so funny.

At this point, you remind me of Milo Yiannopoulous, who thinks because he has a British accent and says stupid things, then he is smarter than "Liberals" cheesy grin. The Visa officers have pretty much made most of their decision, by the time they run through your DS-160, and insofar you can communicate in basic English, they have no problem with you. English is not the native language of Nigerians, and for most Nigerians it has had to become a second Language due to circumstances in a third world country situation that we live in. The sensible, and not condescending folks like you, at Walter carrington know this, and hence it is always reiterated that your only reason for coming is to ascertain the validity of your claims and not to "size you up"
Another guy was asked what he would do after his degree and he said he wants to come home. Come home and do what? He couldn't answer.

In the 1 hour I stood there, it was easy for me to predict those who would be approved and those who would be denied.

And all my guesses turned out right. It's not about prayers. The people I was with prayed. I am an atheist. I dont believe in prayers, god or luck. Just hard work and dedication.

I'm irreligious myself (and consider some atheists asshøles anyway), and if a person gains psychological confidence by praying, then how is it anybody's business, the very idea by some atheist that they need to be killjoys ,and like the Grinch who stole Christmas, and shoot down religious folks is just plain st*pid. If a kid believing in Santa makes him happy, then leave him alone, he poses no harm to the state. So also, if your a VI's applicant wants to pray, let him find emotional comfort in doing so, Çest Fini. grin grin grin
You don't need to wear a suit. You can look very good in a shirt and trousers.

Your look is the first good thing. Your spoken English is next. I heard some people speak and I told myself if I were the V.O, I won't approve these ones.

and that is why your spoilt and condescending bratty self isn't a Visa officer. Honestly, are clothes the only things that give your life meaning grin grin grin. The great folks at Walter carrington are not looking for well dressed folks to approve, and quite frankly it's because well dressed folks have constantly tried to con the US embassy, that's why we have to go and stand for interviews there. I'll stress this again, The consular officers do not give s damn about your dressing; if you have filled your DS-160 and have proven yourself to be a genuine Student, that you don't have to wear givenchy shirt for nothing biko grin grin grin
Speak clearly, distinctly and like a graduate

I wonder what you'll have to say about my wonderful Indian friends who decide to have their interviews in English grin grin, na Im be say you for deport all of them join
Don't dress up in bend down select clothes and think one V.O won't notice how cheap you look.

Wear a nice shirt or gown, put on very light make up and put a glasses on your face to give you a more serious appearance .

At this point, you have proven yourself to be a Vain condescending woman, your life revolves around clothes and class, Poor brilliant folks looking to make a difference and move up the socio economic class, do not deserve any chance by the like of you . SHAME !!!! SHAME!!!. FOR SHAME!!!. Fortunately, the embassy isn't filled with punks like you, they understand and see a life a whole lot differently, and only want to determine the validity of your claims to a US Visa. Once again SHAME ON YOU!!! cheesy cheesy
Luck or prayer don't do shit. Everyone I went in with prayed except me. None of them got it
And some people who prayed after you certainly got, as I know for a fact that you were definitely not the only person granted a visa.
THE ONLY LESSON FROM YOUR POST IS THAT YOU'RE A VAIN, CONDESCENDING AND EUGENIC INDIVIDUAL, WHO PURPOSELY LIED TO OBTAIN VISA AND IS CLAIMING HIGH MORAL GROUNDING AGAINST OTHER RELIGIOUS FOLKS. YOUR MILITANT ATHEISM IS CONDESCENDING AND SILLY cheesy , YOU SHOULD FILL YOUR LIFE WITH MORE PURPOSE OTHER THAN YOUR NAUSEATING BRITISH ACCENT AND CLOTHING grin grin
.

.

Thank you very much, sir! What if I managed to secure a scholarship? Is the cost of preparation in Nigeria not pocket-friendly?Is the cost of living in the US also extemely expensive too?
There aren't lots of scholarships exactly for Undergrad applicants as universities tend to be "Needs Blind". Most scholarships I know of are awarded by external agencies, e.g MasterCard, USAP etc, But these scholarships are very fierce and they take only the best of the very bests on the continent. If you're young (<=18) you can apply for community college, the fees are very very cheap, and later on you can transfer to a university.
Cost of preparation may include all or some of the following
1) A Nigerian Passport - 35,000NGN
2) SAT 1 Exam - 50,000NGN
3) SAT 2 Exam (optional )- 50,000NGN
4) application Fees (average of $100 per school)- if you're applying to let's say 5 schools - 180,000NGN(You can apply for tuition waver sha grin)
5) Miscellaneous- 30,000 NGN
Total - approx 300,000-350,000NGN
Solution - Drag yourself down to Walter carrington on Wednesday for the EducationUSA counselling. After the general session, You can join them for one on one sessions for about 35,000 NGN, its way better than meeting an agent, or constantly coming online. EducationUSA is the excellent solution for you sir grin grin

1: You applied to all three schools knowing fully well that one only offered what you really wanted didn't sell to well to our dear VO,other tangible things like research groups and Possibility for Assistantship, and Industry Exposure would probably have sold cheesy

Vo : What will this degree do for you?
Me : It will equip me to launch in the managerial level of my career, ( I went blank here)
He was typing.
Nothing too bad here, every wants career advancement, but you could have done a lil bit better sir cheesy
Vo: So did you write any standardised exams
Me : No ( I was explaining but he was typing)
Vo: No?
Me: Yes no. For my course a standardised exam is not required. Rather I am to take a comprehensive project management exam in my last semester.
At this point, your fate was pretty sealed and doubt was cleared from our dear VO's mind, He just wasn't ready to buy your explanation , more especially if he did a quick glance at your schools website cheesy
Vo : who is paying
Me: my uncle.
Vo : I am sorry blablabla.
Your fate was already sealed, this was just for future reference sake, if you reapply, and give another story other than "uncle", you'll raise even more deadly red flags.

Guys kind criticise this transcript and advice cos I am reapplying. School resumed 22nd of January.
Maybe you'll meet a nicer VO, and articulate your points better when you reapply
