It was a bloody Friday in Kogi State as some suspected Fulani herdsmen invaded two local government councils killing 10 persons and then set their farm land ablaze.

The incident took place in Omala and Yagba West local government councils.


According to an eye witness, some Fulani herdsmen invaded Ogabifo village near Agbenema community in Omala local government council of the state on Friday with their cattle.

According to the source, “the Fulani herdsmen invaded the farmland and fed their cattle with the produce of the farm, and when the owner of the farm with his family approached them, they attacked the farmer and his family and chased them to the village where about 10 people were killed.”

It was further gathered that after invading the village, the Fulani herdsmen went back to the farm and destroyed their crops and then ran away.

A source, name withheld said the Fulani herdsmen numbering 5 were fully armed with AK 47 and other dangerous weapons.


The source also confirmed to DAILY POST that the villagers have ran away from their various houses as the Fulani herdsmen promised to invade the village again.

In another similar incident, Fulani herdsmen have also invaded another farm land in Yagba West local government council of the state.

An eye witnessed account disclosed to DAILY POST that the Fulani herdsmen with over 30 cattle invaded a rice farm owned by a woman in Omi, destroyed the rice farm and chased farmers from their farm land.

A farmer, who doesn’t want his identity disclosed revealed that the Fulani herdsmen were fully armed when they arrived the farm land.


He added that other farmers were in their farm working when the heard several gun shots.

It could be recalled that the Kogi State governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello last week had said that he will not introduce any anti grazing law to curtail the activities of Fulani herdsmen in the state.

The governor during a tripartite stakeholders meeting between the state government, the Miyyeti Allah Cattle Rearers’ Association and the Farmers Association in Kogi State, rather threw the gate of the state open to Fulani herdsmen.

He said the state was ready not only to accommodate them but also provide security for their lives and property.

Governor Bello said that the people of the state must go and learn how to coexist peacefully with the cattle rearers.

The governor also read riot acts to the traditional rulers, in the state vowing to adopt all available means to punish them if they fail to instil discipline and prevent further breakdown of law and order in their domain.

“My administration will deal with any traditional ruler any where there is crisis, the traditional ruler will be removed or dethroned from office,” he warned.

When contacted, the Kogi State Police Public Relation officer, ASP William Ayah could not confirm the incident.

He said he will contact the affected local government DPO’s to get information about the incident and get back to our correspondent.

Another batch of 150 Nigerians, comprising males and females last night returned to Nigeria from the crisis-ridden Libya after they had undergone severe torture in the North African country.


Most of the returnees had planned to use Libya as a channel to cross to Europe through the Mediterranean Sea, but were caught in the web of crisis and could not go further with their plans.

The returnees arrived the shores of Nigeria 10:10 pm on Thursday night through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) aboard a chartered Boeing 737-800 aircraft with the registration number 6A-DMG.

The returnees comprised 13 female adults and one teenage girl while the male adults were 133 with two teenage boys and a toddler.

The returnees who claimed they voluntarily returned back to Nigeria, were received on arrival by officials of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

They were brought back on the expression of interest to return to Nigeria through the assistance of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and the European Union.

The returnees were received on behalf of NEMA by the South West Zonal coordinator, Alhaji Suleiman Yakubu.

Also on ground to welcome the returnees back home were officials of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) as well as officers of the Nigerian Police.

It would be recalled that as at the second quarter of this year, no fewer than 4,281 Nigerians had been repatriated through various countries in Europe, US, and even some African countries through Lagos Airport alone.

According to the document, between January and June 2017, 2,251 Nigerians were deported through chartered flights majorly from Libya and some from the European Union.

The breakdown of the chartered flights deportees indicated that 1,321 of them were males while the other 930 deportees were females.

Besides, those deported through regular flights, which were mainly from Europe, South Africa, and a few African countries were 2,030 Nigerians.

The composition of the deportees revealed that just like in the chartered flights, majority of them were males.

According to the document, males deported in the first half of the year were 1,502 while 528 others were female.

Out of these numbers, those who were involved in criminal activities in their host countries were handed over to the Nigeria Police for further prosecution, some who involved in drug related matters were handed over to officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at the airport while others were returned to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Traffic in Persons (NAPTIP).

Also, President Muhammadu Buhari had ordered for the evacuation of Nigerians from Libya, following reports that they were being sold as slaves in the war-torn north African nation for as little as $400.

It was gathered that the Federal Government would in the next few weeks intensify efforts towards bringing them back while the ongoing repatriation by the IOM and the EU is expected to also continue.

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, on Tuesday said Nigerian roads were not as bad as many people were claiming; rather, he stated that the roads needed to be adequately maintained.

He, however, noted that some of the roads had outlived their design life, some still within their design life, while others were being built.

Fashola stated these in his keynote address at the United Nations-sponsored capacity building programme for the Federal Road Safety Corps, which was made available to our correspondent in Abuja by his ministry.

He said roads that had outlived their design life should have been replaced and rebuilt, but they had not, and named the Calabar-Itu-Odukpani road as falling within this category.

The minister stated, “They were built in the 1970s, and not only have they outlived their design life, they have had to deal with tonnage and capacities well beyond what their design intended. Can such a road be truly expected to stay intact and deliver a pleasant motoring experience?

“Thankfully, these type of roads are now receiving attention under President Buhari, as the Calabar-Itu-Odukpani, Gombe-Biu, Ilorin-Jebba and other roads that fall within this category are being awarded for reconstruction, along with the third class of roads, which are just being built.”

As for the second category, the minister stated that the roads had been victims of overloading, right of way abuse, and lack of maintenance as depreciation sets in.

He said, “Members of the public must know that roads are depreciating assets. They do not last forever and require regular maintenance and, with time, replacement, if they are to serve their intended purpose. These factors of abuse and lack of maintenance combine to reduce the quality of our motoring experience on the roads.

“With this background, I will now pose the question: How bad are our roads? Some have repeatedly said, ‘All the roads are bad.’ That is not true. We have good parts and bad parts caused by abuse and lack of maintenance.”

Fashola stated that many citizens, some of whom had not used the roads, readily describe Nigerian roads as a death trap.

He said, “I undertook a tour of our roads earlier this year to see things for myself. We went by road and travelled in two buses, driving for at least 12 hours every day. We left at 8am daily and drove until 8pm at the least. On one occasion, we drove for 18 hours, from 8am to 2am the following day.

“We drove through different sections of roads that had outlived their design life, those that are within their design life with failures in some cases, and those that are currently under construction.”
