The Abuja Division of the Federal High Court has just dismissed a 42-count criminal charge pending against the Former Governor of Bayelsa State, Timipre Sylva. Trial Justice Ahmed Ramat Mohammed ruled that the charge which was preferred against the erstwhile governor by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, constituted an abuse of court process. Sylva was in the charge, alleged to have used three separate companies and siphoned the sum of N19.2bn from the Bayelsa state treasury. EFCC insisted that the fraud was perpetuated between 2009 and 2012 when Sylva held sway as governor of the state. Sylva is a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and was a member of the transition committee of President Muhammadu Buhari. The Director of Public Prosecution, DPP, Mr. M.S Diri, had earlier withdrawn another six-court charge against Sylva, wherein he was accused of involvement in the illegal diversion of N6.5billion also from the coffers of Bayelsa State. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/06/breaking-news-alleged-19-2bn-fraud-court-dismisses-charge-against-sylva/ |

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has asked the Rivers State election petition tribunal sitting in Abuja to dismiss five petitions challenging the election of Governor Nyesom Wike. INEC also challenged the legality of the tribunal which, it argued, ought to conduct its proceedings in Rivers State in line with section 285(2) of the 1999 constitution, as amended. INEC, through its counsel led by Dr. Onyechi Ikpeazu, SAN, raised preliminary objection against the petitions which were lodged before the tribunal by the All Progressives Congress, APC, and its governorship candidate in Rivers State, Mr. Dakuku Peterside. Aside APC and Peterside, four other governorship aspirants who are also at the tribunal challenging the declaration of Governor Wike as the winner of the election. They are Mr. Charles Harry of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Tonye Princewill of the Labour Party, Kemka Elenwo of KOWA Party and Minaibim Harry of the Social Democratic Party, SDP. They are separately praying the tribunal to nullify Wike’s victory on the grounds that the election was not only fraught with irregularities, but was conducted with total disregard to relevant provisions of the Electoral Act. Meanwhile, challenging the competence of the petitions, INEC insisted that by virtue of section 285(2) of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), under which the tribunal was established, “a tribunal sitting in Abuja cannot qualify as a tribunal established in Rivers State.” INEC is further asking the tribunal to strike out the APC petition on the ground that some of the persons it alleged masterminded the rigging of election in Rivers State, among whom included wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan, Patience, were not joined as parties to the suit. Respondents in the petitions are INEC, Governor Wike and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/06/rivers-gov-poll-inec-asks-tribunal-to-dismiss-petitions-against-wike/ |
Osun State Governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, said on Tuesday that his administration had performed creditable well despite its inability to pay some workers in the state for the past seven months. According to a statement made available to our correspondent in Osogbo on Tuesday by his media aide, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, the governor, who scored himself high, spoke during a courtesy visit to him by Osun Action Strategy and Development Group. He, however, said he was pained by the inability of his government to pay workers, but also sympathised with workers while assuring them that the hardship would soon come to an end. The statement read, “Despite the financial shortage, even the most virulent critics of this government cannot deny that the administration has performed creditably well. “This government built roads, schools, supplied students with Opon Imo (Tablets of Knowledge) distributed uniforms to all public students in the state, created welfare programmes for the old and vulnerable people as well as support farmers. “No state has done what Osun did in the area of security, which today has totally checked crimes and other anti-social activities in the state. Huge amount of money was committed to purchasing armoured personnel carrier and ambulances, which are strategically located in the state and responding to distress calls round the clock. “If all the programmes with the huge cost involved are factored into the accrue-able revenue to the state, it will be crystal clear why the state is where it is today.” Describing the situation as an economic tragedy, he attributed the current misfortune to gross mishandling of the nation’s economy by the last regime of the Peoples Democratic Party. He stated that the unchecked oil theft under the PDP, in which the nation was losing 400,000 barrels per day, culminated in drastic reduction of oil price in the international market. This price fall has created for the country a tragedy of huge proportion that translated to economic disaster, pains and agony for the workers across the country. Aregbesola stated the state collected N5 billion as monthly allocation in February 2013 but the allocation drastically reduced to a mere N540 million in April 2015. He said further, “As we are trying to find solution to this challenges, we must not also run away from what brought us to this situation. “For those who think this is an opportunity to pillory us in this economic condition, I pity them. Only God does not fail. We shall overcome; we shall recover from this challenge. I sympathise and feel for the workers. I appeal to them to bear with us as we work assiduously to end this problem. I assure them that the period of agony will soon be over. “It is disheartening for people to work and such work fails to translate into wages. It is a harrowing experience for both workers and government. “The challenge of unpaid salaries should not be seen as opportunities by some to pillory either the government or any others facing the same challenges.” http://www.punchng.com/news/my-administration-has-performed-well-aregbesola/ |
