Jos latest: 14 students shot, many killed, 20 houses burnt

Written by Isaac Shobayo and Christian Okeke
NO fewer than 14 students of the University Of Jos were shot in a protest by the students over the killing of one them on Friday, while several people were also killed on Saturday in a related protest by aggrieved people within the university community.

It will be recalled that one of the students was stabbed on Friday, close to the university main gate by a group of irate youths returning from a burial and this led to a protest by the students which attracted the attention of the Special Task Force (STF) men.

Sunday Tribune learnt that in the process of trying to curtail the unfortunate situation, the STF shot into the air and 14 students were hit by stray bullets and taken to the Bingham University Teaching Hospital for treatment.

I just dont believe that. Tuft is a decent school , but not on the same level as Oxford.

Check your facts genius.

Tuft is like a third tier college, not that difficult to get into.
What is up with you and these liberal arts colleges? They only deal with theories. I respect people who go to MIT, Carnegie Mellon etc. Colleges that deal with practical, instead of a theoretical curriculum. Now these people are the ones who change the world.

My Igbo brothers, we must put this conflict into a religious context. That is what our dear ol Ojukwu failed to do with Biafra. If he only he put that conflict into a religious context, the outcome of that war would have been uncertain.

Making it into an ethnic conflict, will not bring anyone to our aid. But if we make it into a religious context, the West & the U.S. will likely join our cause.

This is the task we must do. For the future of Christendom in Nigeria.

You are such a hypocrite. Now that a yoruba man has come out and said the same thing that we Igbos have been saying all of a sudden he is correct. On the other hand you continued to condemn us for making the same exact remarks.

Bow you are asking for oduduwa republic but just the other day you said NIGERIA WILL STAY TOGETHER, NOBODY IS GOING ANYWHERE! As soon as you heard about Igbos talking about Biafra. Also, if the yorubas are tribalist like you say, why would they ever completely welcome you into their countries as equals.Do you think they will elect for president someone with the last name Uagbor(an Itsekiri name) over an Adekoye? Please, for the sake of fairness and to kill hypocrisy, speak no more condemnation of Igbos/Ibibios when they talk about wanted to be in Biafra or create there own country.

About southern Nigeria, it would not work. There is too many bad blood between yorubas and igbos.
Wrong. We Igbos get along with the Yoruba. Do you see either group targeting each other in the name of religion?

Southern Nigeria is respectful of religious and ethnic differences. That is why it will work!

Igbo to Sheriff on Boko Haram
‘Change your style’

From TIMOTHY OLA, Maiduguri

The killings in Borno State, the hitherto home of peace, have assumed an alarming proportion recently despite heavy presence of security operatives. Within three weeks, no fewer than five Igbos were murdered in circumstances alleged to be selective.

However, President-General of the Igbo Welfare Association (IWA) in the state, Chief Nnaka Okereke, has asked Governor Ali Modu Sheriff to change his approach to addressing the serial killing, or the Igbo will leave the state in droves:

“Because our lives and properties cannot be guaranteed, we have to stay at home indefinitely to pray and also mourn our brothers killed in the past three weeks. Five Igbos were killed in cold blood with no reason whatsoever. We are not happy about this and that is why we decided to close our shops and businesses. If, however, our security can no longer be guaranteed, we have no option than to leave en masse to the South-East or other parts of the country.” He spoke to Daily Sun. Excerpts:

Why we closed shops
The Igbo are peace-loving people anywhere they reside. They are very hardworking people with zeal to grow economically and if there is no peace, we cannot be happy. Suddenly, Borno State which is known as the home of peace, becomes home of pieces. As Igbo with a lot of businesses here, this is a major challenge to us. The biggest challenge we are facing is the attack on our people. All along, the serial killings have been general, but recently, the Igbo became the target of attacks and that’s why we are not happy.

We have made our anger known to the government in writing. We have also made efforts to see the governor. We believe the government will respond and we are meeting the governor today (last Monday). The closure of shops by our members is basically to mourn the dead and also register our displeasure about the happenings. Yes, we are mourning with prayers and fasting to register the fact that we are not happy with what is happening. You cannot go for business when the safety of your life cannot be guaranteed. Therefore, we asked shop owners, corporate businesses owned by the Igbo including operators of luxury buses to Lagos and other parts of the country to shut down until further notice.

Selective killings of Igbo
The killing had been on since last year and the Igbos were not the only one killed in the past. But for the past three weeks, it had been directed at the Igbo. In fact, three of the four people killed last week were Igbo while ironically too, the soldier killed on Sunday morning also happened to be an Igbo man. I will say 99 per cent of those killed in the past one month were Igbo. Initially, the attacks were directed at the security agents and all that, but recently, we feel it is directed at the Igbo and we want it to stop.

We have it on authority by one of the survivors of the attacks that when the killers arrived Obinna shop, they asked non-Muslims to leave before the young man, his friend and brother were shot. Their operations in previous attacks also carried similar approach. So from the available information to us, we are not wrong to believe a new dimension in the form of selective killings of our people had been introduced. The worrisome aspect is that they enter some of the shops, and say you, you are one of us, go out and they start shooting. This means they are segregating those they believe do not share their faith and that is why we are calling it selective killing of the Igbos.

We may leave Borno if…
We may be compelled to leave Borno en masse. It is a painful decision to take having put a lot of efforts here to also develop the economy of the state apart from the individual economy, but life is important. We are not even talking about what we’ve lost in the past including the February 18, 2006 crisis which nobody has received compensation or assistance from the state government. But then, it seems the safety of our lives and properties can no longer be guaranteed.

Therefore, we may leave if government fails to give us assurances of end to the killings of our members or an approach to curtail the menace. It is not a threat, but what we are saying is factual, nobody likes to live in an environment where life and property cannot be guaranteed. If somebody dies naturally, it is a different thing, but for somebody to just come for no just cause, and then, start shooting you, this is our problem.

We are not saying government is not doing anything, but all these killers have defied all their efforts. So the government needs to change the method it is using. Aba was a no-go area last year, soldiers went there and less than a month, the story changed. Nobody is hearing about killing and kidnapping again. So why is the one here different? Something seems to be wrong somewhere. Let the government fish out the killers. We are also crying to the Federal Government to come to our rescue.

Our words to the governor
He should change the pattern, the method or approach to the challenges of Boko Haram. I’m not a security man and I can’t suggest any method of tackling the problem, but he realy needs to change his methodology because all the efforts to me have proved nothing. We haven’t got result because the killings have continued. In fact, it has taken a more dangerous dimension in recent times. There is the need to change the pattern of protecting lives and properties, something should be done and if it is beyond the state government capacity, let them tell the Federal Government to step in and do something.

Jos is worthy of a religious crusade. For far too long, Muslims in Nigeria have slaughtered innocent Christians in the South for no reason.

They even slaughter my brothers and sisters for a Danish Cartoon, even though Southern Nigerians should be considered African brothers.

These people would rather be with Arabs than their own African brothers. You know what I have to say about that? Let us give them that wish, let us push them into the Sahara!

So - the pictures you showed- thats how all Nigeria looks like?

Answer me abeg. Lagos and Abuja is not in Nigeria?
No I am not. Only a small percentage of Nigerians are able to enjoy such luxuries. The majority are impoverished and you are being very disingenuous of not showing the full story.

Egypt, Turkey and Tunisia's populations are wealthier than Nigeria's population, yet they are rioting.
