Five African leaders arrives Mali to make a fresh bid to end the country’s political crisis on Thursday.

The presidents of Senegal, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria and Niger meet the Malian President and and members of the opposition June 5 Movement in the capital Bamako.

Dr Eugene Ohu, a faculty at Lagos Business School wins $234,000 grant for virtual reality research

A faculty at Lagos Business School (LBS), Dr. Eugene Ohu, has won a grant of $234,000 from Templeton World Charity Foundation, Inc (TWCF) to conduct a two-year virtual reality research.
The research project titled “Teaching Children Empathy and Compassion through Virtual Reality Games” will explore the potentials of virtual reality (VR) for character development.

The grant was awarded under TWCF’s Global Innovations for Character Development (GICD) initiative.

Dr Ohu runs a Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) Lab at Lagos Business School, where he explores the implications of the immersive, interactive and perspective-taking characteristics of technologies like computers, mobile devices and virtual reality (VR) for character development, learning, behaviour modification, wellbeing and productivity.

The TWCF funded two-year intervention and research project seeks ways to grow the character traits of empathy and compassion in a diverse society like Nigeria, where there are multiple expressions of religious, cultural, social and economic identities. Targeting an initial group of teenagers, who make up more than 60 percent of Nigeria’s population, the study hopes to explore the perspective-taking capabilities of VR to increase understanding for the identities of others different from ourselves.


Speaking on the research project, Dr Ohu said “It will be an immersive virtual reality (VR) experience where teenagers take the perspectives of ethnic groups different from theirs, to appreciate their identity and share in their sufferings. We also hope to train teachers at the study schools on the new VR teaching models, so as to incorporate them into the Civics and Social Studies curriculum of secondary schools”

Immersive VR are computer-generated environments where users experience a digital version of the real world where they can interact with objects and other people. It offers an opportunity to create a more personalised and engaging experience for learners.

Dr Ohu added, “Although VR is fun, my research collaborators and I have broader and more ambitious goals which should see a greater deployment of VR in teaching, learning and development at all stages of a person’s life. I particularly want to see it deployed as a complementary learning resource in training at the Lagos Business School”.

This is contained in a statement issued by presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina on Wednesday.

the statement said the Nigerian President and some ECOWAS leaders led by the Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the sub-regional organisation, President Issoufou Mahamadou of Niger Republic, agreed to meet in Mali to engage in further consultations towards finding a political solution to the crisis in the country.

Leaders expected to participate in the Bamako meeting are host President, Ibrahim Boubacar Keita and Presidents Machy Sall of Senegal.

2,191 people who were tested positive for coronavirus and are located across communities in Lagos State are yet to submit themselves for treatment at the state care centres.

The Lagos State Government made the decry through the state Commissioner for Health, Prof Akin Abayomi, who disclosed this on Friday, adding that residents of the state must continue to take the responsibility of wearing face masks in public in addition to regular handwashing and physical distancing.

He said;

The new cases bring the total number of confirmed COVID-19 infections in Lagos to 11,537 as of Wednesday. Also, 2,191 active cases in communities have yet to turn up for admission in COVID-19 Lagos care centres. For a greater Lagos, we take responsibility by wearing our face masks when in public spaces in addition to regular handwashing and physical distancing.

Police operatives attached to Ichi Division arrested one 23-year-old Emmanuel Nwafor and 21-year-old Chukwuebuka Obi, all of Amichi town in Nnewi South LGA of Anambra State.

It was alleged that the suspects had on the 5/7/2020 robbed and killed one 45-year-old Enoch Nwosu of Enugwu-Aja village Ichi who left his house since Saturday 4/7/2020 with his Lexus 330 Jeep with Reg No.ZBL 38RL.

Meanwhile, scene of crime was visited by Police detectives while the body was recovered at Amichi forest and deposited at the mortuary after it was certified dead by a medical doctor.

Consequently, the robbed Lexus Jeep and other valuables were also recovered from the suspects in Asaba and registered as exhibit.Case under investigation after which the Suspects and their fleeing accomplices would be brought to book.

Okada rider allegedly shot dead by police officer for not wearing a face mask in Imo (graphic)

A yet-to-be-identified motorcycle rider was shot dead allegedly by a police officer around Banana junction in Orlu, Imo state today July 9.

According to reports, the policeman had stopped the motorcycle rider for not wearing a face mask. An altercation ensued between both men after the Okada man allegedly refused to give a N50 bribe.

The area is currently in Chaos as residents are demanding justice for the deceased Okada rider. The spokesperson of the state police command is yet to comment on the incident.

A man identified as Mr Oyinkuro Miebode and his wife, Mrs Maureen who resides in INEC Road, Kpansia Yenagoa, Bayelsa state had a quarrel over family issues and the man out of anger slapped the woman and asked her to keep quite and she did.

Few minutes later, the wife boiled water unknowingly to the husband and his siblings in the house who thought she was boiling water to bath or bake garri.

They even notified her when the water boiled to a certain point.

She turned it inside a basin, went straight to the bedroom and poured it on the husband's body and ran away.

The social media personality made this known while calling out the singer for sexually harassing her back in 2018.

The controversial journalist took to her Twitter handle to put forward her accusations against American-born Nigerian singer, songwriter and record producer, Davido.

Buhari to bandits: Surrender weapons or face disgraceful, violent end

*Says review of military operations on the way

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has warned bandits terrorising the North-West geopolitical zone of the country to surrender their weapons, or face “disgraceful and violent ends.”

President Buhari has also assured people and government of Katsina State of renewed efforts, and review of operations, to improve the security of lives and property in the state, and other parts of the country.

The President gave the warning and assurance when he met with the governor of Katsina State Aminu Bello Masari, at the State House Abuja.

A statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu on Saturday night stated that President Buhari at the meeting said bandits, who have committed crimes against innocent citizens in the state, and across the country, will not be spared.

“President Buhari warned bandits to surrender their weapons, or face “disgraceful and violent ends’’, said the statement.

He further said that more decisive military operations against bandits in Zamfara, Sokoto, Niger, Katsina and Kaduna States will be undertaken.

President Buhari commiserated with Gov Masari over the loss of lives from attacks by bandits, which include District Head of Yantumaki, Alhaji Atiku Maidabino, and APC Chairman in Batsari Local Government Council, Alhaji Abdulhamid Sani Duburawa.
