PoliticsRe: Presidency, PDP Reject Card Reader For Election by Faraidi(m): 7:31am On Feb 11, 2015
owobokiri:
Very good development. What is the essence of a card reader that will certify a Jega registered 4 year voter from miaduguri?? Isn't it sinister that Jega is more worried about unregistered voters voting down south while turning a blind eye when infants were being registered up north?? Under-aged voting is as dangerous to the outcome of any election as double voting or direct result inflation! So why is underaged voting, a northern pastime, geting no serious mention in Jegas jaga-jaga war against rigging?
yes, that man is evil.He should go!

PoliticsRe: Obasanjo Endorses Buhari by Faraidi(m): 12:30am On Feb 11, 2015
Clerverly:
BREAKING: Obasanjo endorses Buhari | TheCable

Olusegun Obasanjo, Nigeria’s former president, has publicly expressed support for the electioneering campaign of Muhammadu Buhari, a former military ruler and presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking at the launch of My Watch in Nairobi, Kenya on Tuesday, Obasanjo, who served his two terms as president under the ruling Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), condemned the postponement of the election.

The circumstances [Buhari] will be working under if he wins the election are different from the one he worked under before, where he was both the executive and the legislature — he knows that,” he said.

“He’s smart enough. He’s educated enough. He’s experienced enough. Why shouldn't I support him?”

It is the first time that the ex-president has publicly spoken of his support for Buhari. He recently said that he would only speak out on his leaning after the election has been conducted.

PoliticsRe: Presidency Can’t Remove Jega - APC Lawmakers by Faraidi(m): 12:24am On Feb 11, 2015
LRNZH:
APPARENTLY disturbed by speculations that the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Attahiru Jega may be removed before his tenure expires on June 13, members of the All Progressives Congress,APC, in the House of Representatives, Tuesday, said President Goodluck Jonathan has no such powers to remove the apex electoral body boss.

Some of the APC lawmakers who spoke to Vanguard unanimously condemned the alleged move as President Jonathan does not have such constitutional powers to effect such a change.

https://www.vanguardngr.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/JEGA-INEC.jpg

Vanguard recalls that immediately after Jega announced the postponement of the 2015 elections, the social media was awash with stories that Jega was forced to postpone the election to pave way for the presidency to remove him from office.

Also prominent elder statesman, Chief Edwin Clark in different fora had repeatedly call for the removal of Jega.

But today, APC Representatives in a chat with Vanguard declared that any attempt by the presidency to remove Jega would be resisted citing relevant sections of the constitution to buttress their points.

“Jega is not a civil servant-Minority Leader, Femi Gbajabiamila, APC, Surulere Federal Constituency, Lagos

Gbajabiamila in his reaction said ”personally I do not consider the Chairman of INEC as a civil servant subject to our civil service rules same way I am not a civil servant”.

“There is a difference between a civil servant and a public servant or officer. INEC and its chairman are a creation of the constitution. Their operations and regulations are as provided under sections 156 and 160 of the constitution”.

“Which specifically says only INEC has the powers to regulate its own procedures and cannot be subject to approval or control of the president or any other authority thereby establishing its independence”.

He further explained that “furthermore terminal leave is a form of removal, however, you slice or cut it and section 157 of the constitution is very clear that the INEC chairman’s removal can only be initiated by two thirds of the senate and not by the president.

“The question of who is a civil servant is answered in section 171 of the constitution and the chairman of INEC is not included.

PoliticsRe: 21 INEC Resident Commissioners Reject Postponement Of Elections by Faraidi(m): 9:28pm On Feb 07, 2015
IbnSultaan:
Twenty one Resident Electoral Commissioners, RECs, of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, have rejected a proposal to postpone Nigeria’s general elections billed for February 14 and 28.

In a vote conducted Saturday by the INEC chairman, Attahiru Jega, after he met with political parties and the civil society, 21 RECs said the elections should continue as planned while 16 others voted in support of a reschedule.

Nigeria has 37 RECs, each for a state and the Federal Capital, Abuja.

The outcome of the vote came as Nigerians await INEC’s decision on whether the elections are moved or not.

Civil Society leaders said Mr. Jega had told them at their meeting that the commission was under pressure to postpone the polls after all security agencies, including the military and the police, warned that they will only support polls held at least six weeks after the current dates.

Jibrin Ibrahim, a senior fellow at the Centre for Democracy and Development, CDD, in Abuja, who was at the meeting, said Mr. Jega told the meeting that security operatives told INEC that they were commencing a six weeks special operations against Boko Haram insurgents in the north eastern corridors of the country and would rather not be distracted by the elections.

Mr. Jega announced that the security forces also said the operations are due to commence on February 14, the date INEC had planned for the presidential and federal legislative elections.
Earlier, 17 political parties out of the total 28 voted in support of an extension.

The opposition All Progressives Congress, APC, has rejected any plan to postpone the election saying such calls are sponsored by President Goodluck Jonathan and the ruling party to stave their imminent defeat at the polls.

It is not clear what the commission’s eventual decision would be with the latest voting pattern by the RECs.

Mr. Jega is expected to brief the media any moment from now.

PoliticsRe: Again, Abuja Residents Protest Postponement Of Elections (pic) by Faraidi(m): 9:22pm On Feb 07, 2015
lalasticlala:
Some residents of Abuja on Saturday again protested the possibility of postponing the already scheduled general elections.
At the Unity Fountain, near the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, where protesters gathered, an armoured police vehicle and other utility vehicles were seen parked with police officers scattered around the area.
The protesters were however blocked by police officers as they marched towards the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission.
A lady who simply identified herself as Sadatu said it was very wrong and unfair for anyone to consider postponing the elections.
“How can anybody think of this? That’s not fair, INEC had four whole years to prepare for this election. If we could have an election in 2011 when much was not in place, why not now?” she asked.

Another protester said the credibility of INEC was at stake with the rumoured postponement. He added that Nigeria’s democracy was threatened with by the call for election postponement at this time.

The protesters, with the intention of marching on the presidential villa, had gathered at the same venue on Friday marching towards the Eagle Square where they were blocked by security operatives.

The protest was organised by the civic group, National Consensus Movement.

The National Council of State had met on Friday and agreed that the elections should go on as planned.
Attahiru Jega, Chairman, INEC, has said the commission is prepared for the elections and has no plans for a postponement.

However, the commission has been holding consultative meetings all day to possibly review the scheduled dates for election.

Before Friday’s anti-postponement protest, some allegedly hired youths numbering about 100, had on Monday marched on INEC headquarters demanding the postponement of the elections.

The youth had gathered in front of the electoral body’s headquarters, asking the commission to delay the polls because of the difficulty in the distribution of the Permanent Voters Card, PVCs.

The youth carried banners and placards with the inscriptions such as “Election is for general participation, not for selective few”, “INEC, do the right thing”, “Don’t disenfranchise Nigerians”, and “We demand for the extension of election to allow Nigerian exercise their franchise.”

After the protest, the youth returned to the Unity Fountain where they were sighted sharing money.

It was not clear if they were sponsored by the Presidency or the PDP, but sources indicated that they were hired by some unnamed individuals who promised them money.

The protest confirmed PREMIUM TIMES exclusive story of last Thursday revealing the plot by the Presidency and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party to organize a nationwide protest against the electoral body to force it to shift the polls.
The National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, a retired colonel, recently at an event in London, made a case for a shift of the elections to give INEC more time to distribute all the PVCs.

However, criticisms trailed the call with Nigeria’s leading opposition party, the All Progressives Congress alleging that Mr. Dasuki was only making the call to buy time for President Goodluck Jonathan’s campaign to gather steam.

Nairaland GeneralRe: What's Your Advice To Help.. Mom Is In Detention. by Faraidi(m): 12:40pm On Feb 07, 2015
chocolateme:
With heavy heart, I narrate to you how my mom ended up in SARS custody till today. I may not be able to give every single detail of what happened but please feel my pain and give me your opinion and advice. It may be a bit long but please bear with me.

My parents stay at Anambra but I and my sister stay in Lagos due to our job, I called my mom on Wednesday last 2 days but her number was switched off and I called dad who said mom's phone is broken and that they will call us back when he gets to the house. Ok they never called, yesterday. The same excuses, I asked him if there is any problem, he replied ''no''.

Suddenly by 5.30 this morning he called that we should open the gate for him, meaning that he came to Lagos on night bus. We were surprised, though not that surprised because he is meant to leave for China tomorrow for business.

He opened up this morning that on Wednesday around 5am, their house help woke up to go and switch on the sumo to pump water and saw about five men jumping into our compound through the fence, she ran to their room and woke them, they started hearing loud bangs on the gate from outside and on the iron door entrance to our house. They later realized it was the police but SARS.

Before now, we had business setback and loaned around 2.8m from the bank, (3 years now to be precise). I don't know how they calculated the interest but last year they refused to accept the loan amount first so we can be paying the interest in instalments. So now it accumulated, my dad said the bank said its 7m that we shall pay and even one of our shops that was used as collateral wasn't moving well due to location so it was rented out but it is still my day's property and the local government has its evidence of existence and ownership. The loan was collected by my mom via my dad's signature and paper, they run different lines of businesses and both travels too.

It was the bank that sent them that morning, knowing that it will be very difficult to make contacts to alleviate the situation if they arrest my dad, my mom decided that dad hides so she could speak with them. My dad went up to our penthouse. They ransacked every where in the house and did not see him, one of them noticed the penthouse and went up threatening to break the door ( they were 8 in number). My mom told them that she is the one that got the loan not her husband, that she will go with them to their office.

She changed into her clothes and they took her away till today, my dad has been trying all possible best to bail her through the lawyer but its hard, then they started trailing my dad. The lawyer advised him to leave the state because it will be worst if they catch him and if they catch him, he should forget about traveling or access to make contact while in detention. Secondly it is really important for him to travel as his flight has been booked, since today, so much efforts have been put in to bail her but to no avail, the top ranked police officer has put a call through from Abuja but yet nothing. I don't know how much the SARS were paid.

They went with the shop's original documents and the lawyer today to the shop and the Manager ended up rejecting it after evaluation with reasons that it will not fetch them seven million, its harder because the former bank manager just retired and this is a new manger. The lawyer wanted to file a court case but the NBA Anambra is still on strike that's why it's difficult to bail her.

Her BP is fast going out of hand and she has refused to eat since Wednesday only water. My brother with the lawyer has taken her drugs to her, the lawyer has decided that by Monday, they file the case on Federal high court and that way, they will grant her bail. Everyone is panicking, I don't understand and I don't know but we all unanimously accept that dad should not go there. Though so far, he is getting help from his contacts, but what I know is that the amount 7m is unacceptable. I feel it's unfair to jump into our private property through the fence as if they were coming to catch a criminal, the Manager has turned deaf ear to everybody's plea to grant mom bail on her health status. Well that's all I understand for now, so she will stay there till Monday again,
I don't even know what to do to help. Do you have anything helpful as per advice so we see if she can be released before Monday? Monday sef is too far. My dad is so pale now and is refusing to eat too.
Well, there is nothing much you can do.What the Lawyer said was the best. But the Police don't have right to detain her more than 24 hours,it is a breach of law and miscarriage of justice. You have to be patients, everything shall work out for ur family.By Monday your mom shall be out then you people can sue the bank, and the Police for detaining her beyound 24 hours. You even claim demages.
