PoliticsNegotiate With Repentant Bandits, Yerima Tells Tinubu by Fareke(op): 6:31pm On Jul 03, 2023
By Gloria Ume-Ezeoke

Former governor of Zamfara State, Ahmad Yerima has suggested that President Bola Tinubu should first engage the use of dialogue with bandits rather than military force, as the best way to address the insecurity challenge to resolve insurgency in the country.

Yerima gave the suggestion today while speaking with State House correspondents after a courtesy visit to the president.

Senator Yerima who said the immediate past government failed in negotiating with the bandits, was of the opinion that if the Federal Government wades in, and begins negotiation with the bandits, the country will record advanced progress like was experienced with the Niger Delta militants.

He further highlighted the success of late President Musa Yar’Adua’s negotiations with militants in the Niger Delta region in 2007, arguing that the feat is a precedent for peaceful resolution.

The Senator who underpinned that the challenges of banditry is further exacerbated by the growing poverty and illiteracy in the region, stated that he is not making a case for bandits but maintained that the Federal Government can wield resources and political will to activate negotiation with the repentant ones.

Senator Yerima also stated that the president should intervene in the power play crisis between the incumbent Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State and his predecessor, Bello Matawalle.

PoliticsArmy Chief, Lagbaja Demands Spiritual Efforts to Compliment Military Operations by Fareke(op): 5:57pm On Jul 02, 2023
By Kingsley Omonobi

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Major General Taoreed Lagbaja has enjoined troops of the Nigerian Army (NA) to compliment their military effort with prayers for the success of the Nigerian Army (NA) in its operational engagements.

The Army Chief made the clarion call at the Interdenominational Church Service marking the Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) 2023 on Sunday at the Mogadishu Military Cantonment, Abuja.

Recall that the NA on Wednesday commenced the commemoration of its 160th year of existence since 1867, when 18 men known as the Glover Hausas of the Royal Navy were organized into a formidable force that it is now.

Gen Lagbaja stated that the NA remains the pride of the nation and a force to reckon with in Africa and globally.

He noted that the Interdenominational Church Service is among the series of activities earmarked for all NA formations and units to commemorate the birth of the NA, as a symbol of national unity and integration.

"It also provides the opportunity for prayers and supplications to be made to God Almighty on behalf of the Nigerian Army, the Armed Forces of Nigeria and the nation in general”.

As we mark our 160th year, I must confess that our journey has not been a bed of roses, as the Nigerian Army, in the course of holding our nation together, has fought a civil war, participated in peacekeeping cum peace enforcement missions and is currently involved in combating terrorism, insurgency and other criminalities across the country”, the Army Chief averred”, he said.

Gen Lagbaja reiterated that the various engagements of the NA within and outside the shores of Nigeria have resulted in the loss of loved ones and breadwinners.

“We have bled, we have piled up the wounded in action, and the population of our widows and widowers as well as orphans has swelled. Our sacrifices are for the love of God, humanity and country,” he stated.

PoliticsEnforce Freedom Of Religious Practice, Kukah Tells FG by Fareke(op): 3:28pm On Jul 02, 2023
By Abdulsamad Teri

Bishop of Sokoto Catholic Diocese, Mathew Kukah, has called on Federal Government to enforce the provision for the freedom of religion and worship as enshrined in the nation’s constitution and other laws of land.

According to Bishop Kukah, this can be done by providing adherents of different faiths in the country with places of worship in the various Federal Government establishments across the nation.

The Bishop who spoke to journalists shortly after the inaugural Mass at the catholic chaplaincy of the 119 Composite Group of the Nigeria Air force Sokoto, emphasized the importance of these places of worships that enable personnel to freely practice their religion.

He said most federal government universities, medical centres and other federal government establishments have no provisions for places of worship for Christians especially in many parts of Northern Nigeria, which is in breach of the constitutional provision.

PoliticsThe Church Has Nothing Against Tinubu by Fareke(op): 10:46am On Jul 02, 2023
It is wicked to say President is out to Islamize Nigeria’

Bishop Charles Ighele is a former Chairman of the Financial Accountability Commission of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN). Ighele, who is also the General Superintendent of Holy Spirit Mission (also known as the Happy Family Centre), Lagos, in this interview, says the Church in Nigeria is not against President Bola Tinubu. Excerpts:

The impression anyone would likely have is that the Church in Nigeria is against President Tinubu dating back to the electioneering campaign period when the President ran on the Muslim-Muslim ticket. Is that impression correct?

I will like to state it very clearly that the Church of God in Nigeria has nothing against Tinubu. Yes, a few pastors prophesied that one thing or the other will happen to Tinubu before or after the elections. But if you carry out your investigation properly, you will find out that these pastors do not belong to the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria or any of the five groups that make up the Christian Association of Nigeria.

Even if any of them belongs to the mainstream Christian groups, they did not speak on behalf of the Church. PFN does not prophecy that way. CAN also do not prophecy that way. Yes, some prominent pastors spoke openly in support of Mr. Peter Obi (presidential candidate of the Labour Party). And some campaigned for Atiku (Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP). You should not also forget that the bishop of one of the well-known churches in Lagos was the vice presidential running mate of Senator Rabiu Kwankwanso (presidential candidate of the New Nigerian Peoples Party, NNPP). From a meeting I attended and as far as I know, PFN or CAN did not direct me or any church to vote for any of the presidential candidates during the 2023 elections.

I cannot however deny that PFN or CAN did not direct churches to vote for certain governorship candidates at the state level. In some states, they voted for PDP, APC or Labour Party depending on the local issues.
As you should know by now, political behaviour in Nigeria is determined a lot by local factors and not necessarily national interests. For most Nigerians, local interests are permanent while national interests are ephemeral. And politicians exploit this political illiteracy of the average Nigerian a lot.

I do not think that the Christian Association of Nigeria, Borno State chapter will tell churches in that state to vote for Peter Obi or Atiku because the President of the Borno State chapter, Bishop Mohammed Naga, has always spoken of how the current Vice President (Senator Shettima) was of help to churches in Borno after Boko Haram onslaughts. I could not, therefore, have seen him telling churches in Borno to vote for any other party.

Happy

In fact, he was very happy that Tinubu won the election on February 25. He told me on the phone. The bishop could vouch for Shettima. It is, therefore, completely not correct to say that the Church is against Tinubu. What the Church was completely against was the Muslim-Muslim ticket. And the Church will forever be against the Muslim-Muslim ticket. I was against the Muslim-Muslim ticket.

But some of us Christian leaders who studied political science in the university or understand Nigerian politics know that if Tinubu really wanted to be President, it was politically expedient, politically necessary for him to pick a Muslim from the North as his running mate. When I personally studied the scenario, I made up my mind to do as the late Bola Ige did “Siddon look”.

Politics‘Muslims Paid Money, Bought Motorcycle For Bandits To Free Abducted Christian Wo by Fareke(op): 5:54pm On Jun 05, 2023
By Ibrahim Hassan-Wuyo

The 16 abducted church worshippers who remained in captivity in Kaduna State, were released by their abductors on Sunday, after a Muslim community paid money and bought a motorcycle for the bandits.

It could be recalled that 40 worshippers were abducted by bandits at Bege Baptist Church, Madala near Buruku in Chikun local government area of Kaduna state during a Sunday service on May 7, 2023.

Some had managed to escape and returned home leaving the remaining 16 in the hands of the bandits.

Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Kaduna State, Rev John Joseph Hayab, told journalists in Kaduna on Monday that they were full of gratitude to the Muslim community in the area, who assisted before the captives regained freedom.

According to him, “the Muslim community where the worshippers were abducted contributed money and bought a motorcycle as part of ransom required for the release of their Christian brothers and sisters in captivity.”

“This goes to show good, caring and sincere neighbours that practically showed concern to the plight of their brothers and sisters that were abducted and their sincere wish that they return home to live together with them in peace and harmony.”

“The exemplary life shown by the Muslim community in Madala should be emulated by all in other parts of the state for a united and peaceful coexistence that is needed for the overall development of the state,” he said.

“The Muslim community has shown that one does not need to be educated before doing the needful. Nigerians from all walks of life should be their brothers keepers in order to eliminate all forms of insecurity in every part of the country,” he said.

The 16 freed worshippers have reunited with their families while those with injuries were in hospital receiving treatment.

PoliticsNew Kano Emirates Have Come To Stay, Ganduje Tells Kwankwaso by Fareke(op): 5:09pm On May 01, 2023
Kano State governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has said that the four new Emirates created by his administration have come to stay and God will not bring anyone that will destroy them.

Ganduje said this during the Workers’ Day celebrations held at Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano on Monday.

He had split the initial Kano Emirate into five and subsequently dethroned the then Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II.

Responding to a statement made by a former governor of the State and national leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, who, in a viral video last week, said the incoming government of Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf of NNPP would review the dethronement of Sanusi II and balkanisation of the original Kano Emirate.

While concluding his speech at the Workers’ Day celebration, Ganduje said the four new emirates are a symbol of unity, progress and well-being of the people.

"Any of you that visits the headquarters of these new emirates will believe me that we have brought development to these places. These emirates were created for unity, progress, history, and also for the recovery of the reputation of the traditional institutions. We created them to honor the people of these regions.

"I want to assure you that these emirates are permanent, they have come to stay. And anybody that will destroy them, God Almighty will not bring him to Kano state. We assure you that these emirates were created because of you, because of your progress.

“Even if we are not in government, we are praying and we will keep praying for God to protect these emirates from all evils,” Ganduje stated.

CrimePolice Arrest Suspected IPOB Members Who Allegedly Killed Five Officers, Couple by Fareke(op): 4:58pm On May 01, 2023
By Chinagorom Ugwu

The police in Imo State, south-east Nigeria, said they have arrested nine suspected members of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) who allegedly killed five officers and a couple in the state.

The police spokesperson in the state, Henry Okoye, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.

PREMIUM TIMES reported how gunmen, on 21 April, killed the officers at a restaurant in Ulakwo, a community in Ngor Okpala Local Government Area of the state and also killed the couple.

How they were arrested
Mr Okoye, an assistant superintendent of police, said police operatives, led by Odeyeyiwa Oladimeji, a superintendent of police, on 24 April at about 5:30 p.m. arrested one of the suspects, Mathew Chukwuma, 48, at his hideout in Umuahia, the Abia State capital.

The police spokesperson said the arrest of Mr Chukwuma, an indigene of Mpam in Ahaizu Mbaise Council Area of Imo State, was in response to a directive to the operatives by the Commissioner of Police in the state, Ahmed Barde, to track down the killers of the officers and the couple.

He said Mr Chukwuma, the suspect, confessed to being the sector commander of the syndicate of the IPOB and its militant wing, Eastern Security Network (ESN) in Mbaise Community in the state and subsequently assisted the operatives in arresting three members of his syndicate at their criminal hideout, while others escaped.

Mr Okoye gave the names of the three other arrested suspects as, Ikechukwu Ojoko, 53, Charles Chilaka, 44, and Anthony Iwu, 50 — all males and indigenes of Umuokiria Community in Ahaizu Mbaise Local Government Area of the state.

“In the course of the investigation, the suspects all confessed to being members of the dreadful IPOB/ESN syndicate terrorising the good people of Imo State and had a hand in the recent killing of five police officers and two civilians at Ngor Okpala (Council Area),” he said.

One cut-to-size AK-47 rifle, 190 rounds of live 7.62 mm ammunition, two AK-47 magazines, two cut-to-size double barrel guns, and one locally fabricated beretta pistol were recovered from the suspects during the operation, according to the police.

The police spokesperson said the arrested suspects “volunteered crucial information that assisted” the operatives to arrest four other suspected IPOB members at their second hideout at about 12:40 a.m. on 27 April in Itu, a community in Ezinitte Mbaise Local Government Area of the state.

“On sighting the operatives, the notorious criminal syndicate engaged them in a fierce gun duel but were overpowered by the super firepower of the combat-ready tactical squad which forced them to disarray and resulted in the arrest of four other suspects,” Mr Okoye said.

He gave their names as, Damian Ibe, 50, Simon Iwuala, 31, Nwabueze Ahiwe, 47, and Paul Obali, 70 – all males and indigenes of the state.

He added that Mr Obali, one of the arrested suspects, is the chief priest of the syndicate and that their second hideout also served as their shrine.

One AK-47 rifle, three pump action guns, two single barrel locally made guns, one locally made pistol, one cut-to-size gun, 50 rounds of 7.66mm live ammunition, 38 rounds of live cartridges, two AK-47 magazines and a walkie-talkie were among the items recovered from the suspects during the operation, the police said.

Others included: Two locally made explosive devices, one iPhone, one H-mobile, three cow horns painted with Biafran Insignia, two Biafran Jewish caps and a Jewish flag, large quantities of weeds suspected to be cannabis sativa and other fetish objects.

"Frantic investigating efforts are on top gear to arrest other syndicate members at large and make them face the wrath of the law,” the police spokesperson said.

He said the arrested suspects had been on the wanted list of the police in the state “due to their nefarious activities,” and that some members of the syndicate escaped with various degrees of gunshot injuries.

The total number of the arrested suspects was eight, according to the statement, but the police spokesperson when contacted by PREMIUM TIMES on Monday, insisted that a total of nine, not eight, were arrested so far.

The Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Mr Barde, commended the operatives for “a job well done,” stressing that policing is “collective business,” Mr Okoye said.

Mr Barde appealed to residents of the state to support the police and other security agencies in the fight against crime and to report to the police “any suspicious activity or person” seen with or treating gunshot injury.

The Nigerian government has accused IPOB, which is leading the agitation for the independence of Biafra, of being responsible for the deadly attacks in the South-east. But the group has repeatedly denied any involvement in the attacks.

PoliticsDon’t Take To Crime Because Of Man-made Economic Hardships, Igbo Leader Tells Yo by Fareke(op): 4:51pm On May 01, 2023
By Nwabueze Okonkwo

ONITSHA – The spiritual leader of Igbo land, Chief Rommy Ezeonwuka has charged Nigerian youths not to take to crime because of the present economic hardships which he described as man-made.

He noted that the unfortunate economic stagnation currently befalling Nigerians, arising from corruption and bad leadership had equally taken place in other developed countries of the world before they stabilized and became great nations.

Ezeonwuka who has a chieftaincy title of Ogilisi Igbo counselled the aggrieved Nigerian youths to be hopeful, rather than taking to crime as according to him, what they are presently suffering from those he identified as criminalized politicians must surely come to pass in future.

In a press statement he issued to newsmen yesterday, via his Twitter handle, Ezeonwuka declared: “The difficulties we are witnessing today in Nigeria have to do with the cycle of life on earth which happens to individuals, families, towns, countries and races, adding, many great races of old have died, while many new ones have risen but in all these, taking to crime is not justifiable”.
According to the Igbo leader, “many wealthy families in the 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s have diminished, while many poor families as at then are now very wealthy as at today, which is an indication that the cycle of life is in existence on the planet earth”.

“Therefore, may I once again assure our great Nigerian youths that there is light at the end of the tunnel, meaning that Nigeria must rise and be great”.

PoliticsPeople After Me For Congratulating Tinubu- Ohaneze President by Fareke(op): 2:19pm On Apr 30, 2023
National president of Ohaneze Ndigbo Youth council Mazi Okwu Nnabuike has cried out over alleged threat against his life after congratulating President-Elect Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He said he has been receiving threats since he congratulated Tinubu for winning the February 25 poll.

He alleged: “Some persons who are annoyed that I congratulated the President-elect have set machinery in motion to take me out of the way.

“They are employing every means, including using the DSS and other security agencies to make sure that I am cajoled and silenced. What is wrong that I congratulated the President-elect? Is Ohanaeze now a political party?

“There are Igbo people in APC, PDP, and LP; and we are serving the interest of the entire Igbo regardless of their political affiliations. As I said earlier, Bola Tinubu is the President-elect and he will be inaugurated on May 29. The aggrieved parties are in court and until the petitions are decided, we all have to support Tinubu to move the country forward.

"I am putting the entire nation on notice that should anything happen to me, the sources of the attacks are known. Security agencies should not allow themselves to be dragged into this.”

PoliticsAccept Defeat, You Lost Woefully, FG Tells Atiku, Obi by Fareke(op): 11:40am On Apr 30, 2023
By Adegbite Taoheed

Opposition parties have been advised by the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, to accept defeat and stop their gripping over the 2023 presidential election, saying they lost the poll woefully.

According to Mohammed, President Muhammadu Buhari deserves nothing but accolades for delivering the best election in the country’s history, adding that “the tempestuous but predictable reaction to the President’s comments by the opposition has shown them for what they are: shameless sore losers.”

This was disclosed in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday by his Special Assistant (Media), Segun Adeyemi.

He said “Mr President’s analysis on the reasons for the opposition’s loss in the 2023 elections was incontrovertible,” adding that both Peter Obi of the Labour Party and Peoples Democratic Party’s Atiku Abubakar lost the election due to overconfidence and complacency.

”President Muhammadu Buhari lived up to his billing by delivering a free, fair and credible election, and his legacy is assured. The President would rather lose his state and many of his party’s strongholds than tamper with the fidelity of the election, and that is why he provided a level playing field for all parties,” Mohammed added.

PoliticsKano Governor-elect Will Revisit Sanusi’s Dethronement, Kwankwaso Declares by Fareke(op): 8:12am On Apr 30, 2023
Chuks Okocha in Abuja and Ibrahim Shuaibu in Kano

The presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in the 2023 general election and leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, has said the incoming government of the Governor-elect of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, will revisit the dethronement of the 14th Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II.Sanusi, who became emir in the final term of Kwankwaso as governor of the state, was dethroned by the outgoing Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, who was the deputy governor at the time the monarch was installed.

Sanusi was removed on March 9, 2020, and also banished from Kano and sent to Loko, a remote community in Nasarawa State, while the expenses of the emirate under him were probed. He later became the leader of the Tijaniyya Islamic sect in Nigeria, after he was turbaned in Senegal as the Khalifa of the Tijaniyya sect in Nigeria by Sheikh Mahi Ibrahim Inyass, the Grand Khalifa of the Tijaniyya Movement.

However, the Federal High Court, Abuja, later declared his banishment from Kano State as unlawful and unconstitutional.Delivering judgment in Sanusi’s suit in November 2021, Justice Anwuli Chikere awarded N10 million compensation to him and against the respondents comprising the police, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Attorney-General of Kano State. She also ordered them to tender a public apology to him in two national dailies.

She held that the Emirate Council Law, 2019, relied on by the Kano State government in banishing Sanusi conflicted with the Nigerian Constitution.Following the court judgment, Sanusi had in February this year paid a historic visit to Kano State, barely three years after he was deposed from the throne.Sanusi arrived at the Aminu Kano International Airport and moved straight to his mother’s residence which is located along Ibrahim Dabo Road. The former Emir later clarified that he was in Kano on his way to Dutse, Jigawa State.

He explained that he could not fly directly to Jigawa State, because of the bad weather and had to stop over in Kano. After dethroning Sanusi, Ganduje had also enacted a law splitting the Kano emirate into five and appointed emirs who were at par.But speaking in a viral video, Kwankwaso said the dethronement and balkanisation of the emirate would be reviewed by the incoming government of the governor-elect, Abba Kabir Yusuf, who is popularly known as Abba Gida-Gida.

According to the NNPP presidential candidate, “We have campaigned and as you know we are popular in Nigeria, especially in Kano State, we are now back and God willing we will continue with the good works our administration left. This incoming governor and his team will take them up. “As elders, we will continue to advise them to do the right thing. We tried not to intervene in the issue of bringing or removing any Emir, but now, an opportunity has come.

Those who were given this opportunity will sit down and see to the issues. They will look at what they are expected to do.“Besides the Emir, even the emirate has been divided into five places. All these need to be studied. Usually, a leader inherits good, bad, and issues that are hard to reconcile.”He further prayed for God’s intervention to allow the incoming governor to be able to handle things easily. When contacted, an official of the NNPP in Kano told THISDAY on the condition of anonymity that “the video is genuine but I can’t say anything about it. It’s not my duty to talk about it”.However, all efforts to contact the spokesperson of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Mr Ladipo Johson proved abortive as he declined to answer the phone call or respond to a text message sent to him.

Recall that one year after he removed Sanusi, Ganduje had said he decided to save the system and the traditional institution from abuse.Speaking at the presentation of a book on former President Goodluck Jonathan, authored by a journalist, Mr. Bonaventure Melah, Ganduje had said the former emir was not the best man for the throne, alleging that the deposed emir was appointed to spite former President Goodluck Jonathan.Jonathan had in April 2014 removed Sanusi as governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) over claims by the ex-CBN governor that $49 billion was stolen by some persons under the Jonathan administration.Faulting Sanusi’s public outburst over the alleged fraud, Ganduje said the ex-CBN governor ought to have discussed the matter privately with the former president who in turn could have directed an investigation into the allegation.“Jonathan took a bold step in [removing] Sanusi as CBN governor, which created bad blood in certain circles. When Sanusi said $49 billion was lost in Jonathan’s government, I said in my mind that no, you could have discussed it with him (Jonathan) privately.“You could have given him this clue and then he would know how to investigate even before those who had stolen the money would find a way of hiding the money.“That statement, I said in my mind, was not honourable. That statement created bad blood… Sanusi was appointed Emir of Kano not because he was the best man for the throne but to retaliate what Jonathan did to him,” Ganduje reportedly explained.

PoliticsPetrol Subsidy Removal: Buhari Hands Over Tough Problem To Tinubu by Fareke(op): 7:58am On Apr 30, 2023
By Ediri Ejoh

Nigeria oil resources, especially petrol, seem to have brought more pain than joy to the citizens.
While nations such as Norway, Russia, UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, through strategic planning and investment of the gains made from harnessing petroleum resources, have turned around their economic fortunes, Nigeria has failed to do the same.

Managers of Nigeria’s petroleum resources have shown that they are more concerned with quick-fix solutions. The implication is that the citizens are now poorer amid abundance with 130 million out of the nation’s 200 million people already living in multidimensional poverty levels.

It is on record that Nigeria is the only member nation of the crude oil cartel, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), with no functional refinery.

This is not to say that Nigeria does not have refineries, no. Nigeria has four refineries located in Port Harcourt (two), Warri and Kaduna with a combined capacity of 445,000 barrels per day.

Many experts say they have been mismanaged in such a way that, over time, they have become moribund.

Today, despite being the number one oil-producing country in Africa, Nigeria imports refined products. Recently, the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, said the nation was spending about N250 billion monthly to subsidize the importation of petrol into the country simply because all the nation’s three refineries are down.

According to her, the subsidy cost per litre ranged between N350 and N400. This has grave implications for the economy as funds which otherwise would have been used to carry out capital projects to bridge the infrastructural deficit in Nigeria are spent monthly to subsidize petrol.

The case has been made for the removal of the subsidy. To give vent to this demand, Ahmed said it will be removed before the Buhari administration winds down on May 29. But the move has now been suspended as the National Economic Council (NEC) said, last week, that the decision on whether to remove the subsidy or not will now be taken by the incoming Tinubu administration.

President-elect Bola Tinubu will take over from President Muhammadu Buhari on May 29. Indeed, budgetary provisions of only N3.36 trillion have been made to cover the first six months of 2023, that is, January to June. Making a U-turn on her earlier pronouncement, Ahmed, on Thursday, the Minister said the NEC decided at its meeting that it was not a favourable time to remove the petrol subsidy.

The same day, Labour, which had been at the forefront of the fight against the removal of petrol subsidies without fixing the nation’s four refineries, signalled the crisis to come when it warned that it will have to demand N100,000 minimum wages should the subsidy be dispensed with. The current minimum wage is N30,000. Stating the position of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Chairman in Ekiti State, Kolapo Olatunde, said Labour leaders would not accept petrol subsidy removal without optimal functionality of refineries.

According to him, if the government insists on the removal, workers would only accept an increase of the minimum wage to at least N100,000 across the country as the ripple effect of the removal would be devastating for citizens, especially workers.

Olatunde disclosed that the removal of subsidy which “could result in the selling of petrol for as high as N500 per litre” would have an immediate impact on the prices of goods and services in the country, thereby increasing poverty level and economic challenges.

PoliticsAgain, FG Postpones Census by Fareke(op): 7:22am On Apr 29, 2023
The Federal Government has once again postponed the 2023 Population and Housing Census.

A credible source who spoke with Daily Trust Saturday said the decision was made yesterday after a meeting between President Muhammadu Buhari and the Chairman of National Population Commission (NPC), Nasir Isa Kwarra.

The source, who does not want his name in print as he was not authorised to speak with the media, said the postponement was made due to the challenges the commission is facing to seamlessly carry out the exercise.

While he did not disclose the challenges to our reporter, the commission had previously suspended the training of adhoc staff who would carry out population count due to finance and logistic issues.

But when asked if a new date has been fixed, he said he can’t reveal it as the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, will make a broadcast on it today.

Recall that the Census was earlier scheduled for March 27 but was shifted to May 3 due to the earlier postponement of the gubernatorial elections.

Also, the chairman of the commission had on Thursday, during a meeting with the diplomatic corps in Abuja, stated that the commission was yet to get all the devices needed to carry out the census, noting that some devices will be procured in a few days’ time.

For the country, we require up to 800,000 PADs, so far, we have procured about 500,000. The remaining are coming in a few days’ time,” he said.

On the donations for the census by the private sector and other key stakeholders, he said “But you know the way they operate; it is not as if the money will come like that. They have to talk with their own government and look at their budget. So, that process is ongoing. But we cannot say any money has come in. It is a process, and the process is unfolding.”

PoliticsWhy Opposition Lost Presidential Election — Buhari by Fareke(op): 8:53pm On Apr 27, 2023
President Muhammadu Buhari, on Thursday, said a combination of overconfidence, complacency and bad tactical moves made the opposition political parties to lost the February 25 presidential election.

The President said while the the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, was working hard to retain power in the recent elections, the combined opposition was a victim of overconfidence.

Speaking at his residence in the State House where he received the Progressive Governors Forum led by its Chairman, Governor Abubakar Bagudu of Kebbi State, Buhari said: “They were already telling their foreign backers that they would defeat the APC.

“Our party blended confidence with caution, we worked hard and won. Now, their overconfidence is creating more problems for the opposition than anyone else.

“They are finding it hard to convince those who supported them from outside why they are unable to beat us.

"A combination of overconfidence, complacency and bad tactical moves made them lose, plain and clear. This has created more problems in their camp. Why did they fail to remove us?”

Speaking in response to an issue raised by Governor Bagudu, the leader of the Forum, President Buhari said “an important reason I congratulate Asiwaju on winning is because the opposition got support and false hope from outside and went on to create the impression that they will win, that they will defeat us.

“How more wrong could anyone be?”

He charged the Progressive Governors to stick together and openly address issues among themselves.

“Try and keep solving problems. Be courageous to discuss them openly between yourselves. This is the best way to survive politically in Nigeria,” said the President.

PoliticsWhy I’ve Not Gone On Vacation After Polls – Obi by Fareke(op): 9:23pm On Apr 24, 2023
Presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP) Peter Obi has explained why he has not taken rest after the general elections.
He said no serious leader would go on vacation with the way things were going on in Nigeria.

Speaking on Monday while visiting members of the Muslim community in Awka to felicitate with them on the celebration of Eid el-Fitri, Obi said his visit had nothing to do with politics.

The former Anambra Governor, who was also in Onitsha mosque on Sunday for the same purpose, explained that paying such visits should not only be borne out of political ambitions.

He said: “People who want to rest can go and rest. For me, I’m not resting. No serious leader will go and rest in Nigeria with the way things are today.

“We’ve will continue to visit as many people as we can, and also support them in the best way we can.”

While donating cartons of noodles, bags of rice and soft drinks to the community, Obi promised to help them in rebuilding of the mosque, which was undergoing facelift.

He said: “I Thank you for inviting me to the mosque to celebrate with you. You wanted to come to my house instead, but I said it will be better for me to come and now that I have come, I have also seen that the mosque is undergoing reconstruction.

"Also, the guy’s Igbo sounds artificial, like something he is still learning…The flow is missing, so can’t ascertain he is truly one.”

Another tweep, Muktar Bagudo said, “Nop! It’s just the Qur’an. Once you have a lot of it in your mind and brain, even your Hausa or English changes in accent.”

Bolaji Williams opined that it is a beautiful and very rare thing, adding that it is like seeing a bat fly at noon.

Meanwhile, Mudashiru Temitope said, “First time seeing an Igbo Muslim(s)… Masha Allah. May Allah S.W.T accept our Dua.

Amaka Ogili said, “My uncle died a Muslim. We are one with no discrimination. Izu umunna bu ofu.”

While expressing his shock, a tweep, Daddy Evra said, “Really? I can’t believe it. Do you know I used to think about it? So there is Igbo Islam? Allah Akbar.”

Another tweep, Phanini said, “First time seeing a Muslim from the east.”

Abdul-Afeez said, “This right here is very new to me, well I’m not surprised because of what God said in the Quran.

However, one Oscar opined, “You can practice your religion in peace, no problem. But we will not tolerate Emir in our land.”

Another one, Onyelichukwu said, “The only thing that I don’t like with all this Igbo pretending to be Muslim is known that it’s a pretence because Igbo can’t be Muslim, it’s not in our DNA. Secondly, while you are pretending to be, please remember we are Igbos, we have our attires, put them on and stop.

PoliticsBuhari Apologises To Nigerians Hurt By Regime’s Policies by Fareke(op): 8:42pm On Apr 21, 2023
…Thanks citizens for tolerating eight-year regime

With only 38 days left in office, the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Friday, in Abuja, asked Nigerians hurt by his policies for a pardon.

Buhari described himself as a lucky and fulfilled politician, having served as military governor of Borno State in 1976, Minister of Petroleum Resources in the same year and one-time Head of State (1983 – 1985).

He thanked citizens for “tolerating” his eight-year regime, which began when he was sworn in as President on May 29, 2015.

"So, please, whoever feels I have done wrong to them, we are all humans. There is no doubt I hurt some people and I wish you will pardon me. And those that think that I have hurt them so much, please pardon me,” said the president.

Speaking of his retirement plans, the president echoed his desire to wash his hands off party politics for a while and stay away from the FCT.

He said, “I am counting the days. Democracy is a good thing; otherwise, how can somebody from the other side be a president for two terms? From my home town to the Niger Republic is eight kilometers.

“I assure you, I have deliberately arranged to be as far away from you as possible, not because I don’t appreciate the love you’ve shown to me, but because I think I’ve gotten what I have asked and I would rather quietly retire to my hometown (Daura, Katsina).”

The president faulted the narrative that justice cannot be found in courts due to nepotism and ethnic sentiments, arguing that all Supreme Court justices in the election cases he took to the court in 2003, 2007 and 2011 were all Northern Muslims. Yet, he lost.

The chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, FCT chapter, Timothy Amakon, thanked the President for transforming the nation and prayed that God strengthens him to continue serving as an elder statesman after office.

The Executive Director of the Al-Halbbiya Foundation, Adeyemi Faud, commended the cordial relationship shared by Christians and Muslims residing in the FCT.

On his part, the senator representing the FCT, Philip Aduda, thanked Buhari for engendering political tolerance.

Aduda, who has served as Senator for twelve years, said although he won his mandate on the platform of the main opposition, Peoples Democratic Party, the president did not insist that the senatorial seat goes to a member of the governing All Progressives Congress.

The Sallah homage involving members of the FCT community was attended by vice president, Yemi Osinbajo, Senate President Ahmed Lawan, Minister of the FCT, Mohammed Bello, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, the president’s Chief of Staff, Professor Ibrahim Gambari, service chiefs, cabinet members, presidential aides, traditional rulers, the business community, among others.

PoliticsFuel Subsidy Removal: Labour Threatens To Mobilise Workers Against Tinubu Govt by Fareke(op): 7:43am On Apr 02, 2023
The Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress have given conditional support for the removal of fuel subsidy.

The two labour bodies said that they would only allow the removal of fuel subsidy if the incoming administration of Bola Tinubu takes steps towards the repair and revitalisation of government refineries across the country and allow modular refineries.

Failure to do this, they said they would oppose the subsidy removal and mobilise workers to protest against the decision.

The regime of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), had stated that the subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit, popularly called petrol, would be removed before the end of its tenure on May 29, 2023.

The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, later explained that the subsidy removal was delayed by the 2023 general election and the planned population census.

The Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, Clement Agba, had, after the Federal Executive Council meeting held on March 15, said no conclusion had been reached on how to lessen the likely impacts of the proposed petrol subsidy removal on the citizens.

He said although a committee headed by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo had been working for about a year, nothing definite had been agreed upon.

Speaking on Channels Television on Tuesday, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, said the government would hand over the implementation of petrol subsidy removal and palliative measures to the incoming administration.

But the NLC and the TUC noted that there would only be a conditional acceptance of the removal of subsidy.

One of the principal officers of the NLC and President of the National Union of Local Government Employees, Hakeem Ambali, said the union remained oppose to the removal of fuel subsidy.

Ambali, who is the national treasurer of the NLC, stated this in an interview with our correspondent in Abuja.

We are opposed to the removal of fuel subsidy until the Nigerian government acts responsibly by fixing our moribund refineries,” he stated.

Ambali also called for the standardisation of private refineries, saying, “It is a shame that Nigerians are made to suffer for the incompetence of the government. We are the only oil producing country in the world that imports petroleum products; let the government license and serve as the regulator by standardising the operation of private refineries to service the domestic value chain.”

The National President, National Union of Teachers, Titus Amba, said the union would stand by the decision of the NLC on fuel subsidy removal.

We are working together with the NLC. The position of the NLC as regards the issue of fuel subsidy is our own position,” he stated.

Corroborating the stand of the NLC, the TUC advised the president-elect to ensure the smooth running of modular refineries across the country, while noting that fuel subsidy was a scam.

The Vice-President of the TUC, who also doubles as the National President of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, Tommy Etim, explained why Nigeria needed functional modular refineries.

Etim advised the incoming administration of Tinubu to set the ball rolling.

He said, “The subsidy regime is a scam. I doubt if there is any subsidy to remove. Every day we wake up to new fuel prices and tariffs, so which subsidy are they talking about again? I think we have passed the level where we get shocked or get moved whenever we hear about the removal of any subsidy. Our advice to the incoming administration is for them not to hide under the shadow of any subsidy. We were made to believe that there was a subsidy. The solution now is for our refineries to work.
