The campaign posters of Jigawa State governor, Sule Lamido and governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Amaechi, have flooded the streets of Kaduna ahead of the 2015 presidential elections. The posters bearing the two governors’ photographs, with Governor Lamido as president and Governor Amaechi as his running mate, were seen at the popular Stadium and Station Roundabout in Kaduna North and South Local Government Areas within the metropolis on Monday. Although both governors at different occasions denied rumours of their perceived 2015 ambitions, the absence of Governor Lamido at last Saturday’s reconciliatory meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party in Kaduna, which had Vice President Namadi Sambo in attendance, has fueled the rumour. However, when contacted, the press secretary to Governor Lamido, Mallam Umar Kyari said he was not in the best position to comment on the matter and referred our correspondent to the state PDP chairman. This is coming barely two days after the Bamanga Tukur-led National Working Committee of the PDP held its reconciliatory meeting in the North West zone. Besides Governor Lamido, Governors Magatakarda Wammakko of Sokoto and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of Kano States were also absent from the meeting. www.mobile.punchng.com/output.php?link=http://www.punchng.com/news/lamido-amaechis-2015-posters-flood-kaduna/ www.channelstv.com/home/2013/03/25/lamidoamaechi-2015-presidential-campaign-posters-flood-kaduna/

It has been estimated by President Goodluck Jonathan that, with the ongoing revolution in the agriculture sector in the country, Nigeria will stop importation of rice in 2016. President Jonathan made this known at the Nigeria Summit 2013, organised by the Economist in Lagos, on Tuesday. He stated among other things that the Federal Government was committed to creating an enabling environment for the private sector to thrive, stating that lots of activities were being achieved in rice, cassava and sugar production: “Our aim is to go back to agriculture not only to export raw materials but to process and add value. We are committed to creating job,” he said. The president also noted that the government was aggressively addressing the problem of infrastructure in the country, stating that there were improvements in various sectors of the economy. Specifically, the president said power supply had improved tremendously, assuring that at the end of the privatisation process in the power sector, Nigerians would experience stable power supply. www.informationng.com/2013/03/we-should-be-able-to-stop-importation-of-rice-by-2016-gej.html |

Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, has accused former president, Olusegun Obasanjo of being behind the continuous marginalization of the Yoruba people, as being alleged by some Yoruba elders. A brief flashback would show that a group known as the Yoruba Unity Forum, recently alleged that President Goodluck Jonathan had marginalized the zone in the distribution of political offices. The traditional ruler who received former Senate Leader, Senator Teslim Folarin, who was on a sympathy visit to his palace over the fire that gutted some parts of the palace, said the eight year rule of Obasanjo was not beneficial in any way to the Yoruba people. He maintained that Obasanjo’s did not ensure a succession policy for the Yorubas, instead, the former president was only paying mere lip service on issues that could have assisted the Yorubas at the long run. While calling on prominent Yoruba politicians to guard jealously the cultural heritage of Yoruba nation, the Monarch warned that Yoruba language and culture could go into extinction because parents no longer teach their children their local dialect and culture. He thus called for the restoration of Yoruba history in school curricula, saying that the race had succeeded in many areas. Speaking earlier, Folarin sympathized with the Alaafin on the fire incident, thanking God that no life was lost. He apologized for his late visit, disclosing that it was due to ill- health. www.osundefender.org/?p=95054 |
Mr. Obasanjo made the pledge at an event in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, South West Nigeria, on Tuesday, where a book was launched to commemorate his 76th birthday celebration. The book titled ‘Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Legacy 1999/2007’ chronicled the stewardship of the former Head of State as President and Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007. The two-volume book is composed of 20 essays written by eminent Nigerians and it was described as an attempt on the assessment of the Mr. Obasanjo’s achievements in the eight years under review. The assessment was conducted on the areas of economic development, the various reforms, and fight against corruption among others decisions taken by this administration. Speaking at the occasion, President Goodluck Jonathan, represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr Mike Oghaidume, commended the former president for his selfless service and leadership roles in Nigeria, Africa and the world at large. The President had earlier in a letter stated that Nigerians owe the former president an “enduring debt of gratitude” for his contribution to the development of the nation. The highpoint of the event was the presentation of prizes to winners in the inter- collegiate competition on human security in Africa by the Centre for Human Security based at the Obasanjo Presidential Library. The event attracted family members, friends, captains of industries, political associates and members of the diplomatic corps. www.channelstv.com/home/2013/03/05/obasanjo-76-vows-to-continue-providing-purposeful-leadership/

First son of the late Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, due to what music has turned to in Nigeria, is not limiting himself to be a Nigerian citizen; he’s rather a citizen of the Africa continent. The reason being that, the music he plays is more welcomed and accepted in other black nations and nations where Afrobeat is played and enjoyed than Nigeria. “Afro beat can never die, maybe in Nigeria, but in America, there are over forty to fifty bands; in New York alone there are over 20 bands; it exists in Japan, Australia, San Francisco and other parts of the world. So when you think that afro beat is dying in Nigeria, in other parts of the world, it is becoming bigger and more popular. It does not matter where it originated from, we are all from the same planet, and I am not going to get caught in the foolishness of being a Nigerian,” he charged. The award winning Femi Kuti said, “I am not a Nigerian, I am an African. When you understand the history of Nigeria, Nigeria is a colonial structure set in motion by Lady Lugard. So Nigeria is not our name. When you understand the history of Africa, then you will not be foolish to fall into the category of calling yourself a Nigerian. I am an African, because you understand that Africa was divided 1885. When you look at it from that perspective, you will understand that people appreciate the talents that come out from this part of the world.” www.247nigerianewsupdate.com/femi-kuti-denies-fatherland-i-am-not-a-nigerian/ |
