One of the children of the Okonjo family, Mr Onyema Okonjo, on Monday blamed security lapses for the kidnap of his mother, Prof. Kanenne Okonjo. Kanenne (82), is the mother of the Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala. Onyema told reporters in Ogwashi- Uku, Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta that his mother was kidnapped on Sunday at her residence between 12 noon and 1 p.m. by 10 young men. “They came in two green Golf cars and it all happened very quickly. “I think there were definitely some lapses in terms of security. It is not what it should have been, the people that were supposed to have been here were not here. “This gave them the opportunity to do what they wanted to do, but at the end of the day; we really have to be prayerful. “I think it is really a sad reflection of where we are as a society,” Onyema, the sixth in the line of seven children of the Okonjos, said. He wondered why an octogenarian woman, a grand mother and great grand mother should be kidnapped. Onyema said that his father, Prof. Chukwuka Okonjo, the Obi of Ogwashi-Uku and Okonjo-Iweala were on their away to Ogwashi-Uku when the incident happened. When contacted, the Commissioner of Police in Delta, Ikechukwu Aduba, said that this was not the time to trade blames. He, however, promised that any officer indicted would be punished. Aduba said that in every case of kidnapping, there was always an insider, adding that investigation was on to unravel the situation and free Kanenne unhurt. “We have been holding meetings with the governor and we have sent out our men to comb every nook and cranny and I am sure we will get her out unhurt,’’ Aduba said. There was a large number of security personnel at the residence of the Okonjos at the time of filling this report. www.businessdayonline.com/NG/index.php/news/284-breaking-news/48801-kanenne-okonjo-son-blames-security-lapse-for-mothers-kidnap |
CONTROVERSIES have continued to trail the exact amount of newly printed N1,000 notes found missing at the Nigeria Security Printing and Minting Company (NSPMC). While the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is insisting it was N2.1 billion, the officials of the minting company are claiming a lower figure. Only last week, there were revelations of missing newly printed N1,000 notes at NSPMC. The board, headed by the CBN Governor, Mallam Lamido Sanusi, convened an emergency meeting. At the end of the meeting, the Managing Director and Head of Security of the company were directed to proceed on indefinite leave, until investigations are completed. Consequently, Ahmed Bamali was appointed to head the company. The board also resolved to expand the investigation and audit the production of other currency denominations to ascertain the quantity of money that had actually gone missing over the years. Nigerian Tribune gathered that an investigative audit panel had been constituted to ascertain the circumstance surrounding the theft and the report will be ready by January. Meanwhile, some financial analysts that spoke with Nigerian Tribune opined that the relevant agencies should carry out a holistic probe on the scam. According to an economist, Dr Osaro Obobaifoh, the alleged theft was unimaginable; stressing that effort must be made to get to the root. Obobaifoh, a university teacher, pointed out that for this to be happening at a time government officials were still protesting the country’s rating in corruption index released recently by Transparency International was regrettable. On his part, a stock broker, Wale Aberuagba, called on lawmakers and law enforcement agencies to wade in, stressing that nothing should be swept under the carpet. He attributed the theft to a mystery that must be unravelled; stating that resurgence of corruption in sensitive places must be checked. Meanwhile, the House of Representatives has invited the CBN governor to explain the missing notes. www.tribune.com.ng/news2013/index.php/en/component/k2/item/886-missing-n1000-notes-cbn-minting-company-officials-disagree |

Lionel Messi has set a new record of 86 goals in a calendar year after surpassing Gerd Muller's record of 85 strikes in Seville on Sunday night. The Barcelona man achieved the feat with two fine strikes in the first half an hour against Betis, meaning he has notched up the tally of 86 in 66 games. It took Muller just 60 appearances to set the previous record in 1972. The Argentine started 2012 with two goals against Osasuna in the Copa del Rey, and regularly notched up doubles and trebles throughout the year for both club and country. He scored exactly two goals on 20 occasions, and at least three strikes nine times, including a five-goal haul against Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League. Muller hit 42 Bundesliga goals in 34 outings to fire Bayern Munich to the German title in 1971-72 and eventually 1972-73, and he also played an integral role in West Germany's European Championship victory. He scored five goals in the four finals games it took die Mannschaft to lift the trophy under the old format. Muller was also boosted by Bayern's run of 21 matches in 37 days during the traditional pre-season period. Due to the summer Olympics that year, the German domestic football season was pushed back until September 16, so a new competition - the DFB- Ligapokal (League Cup) - was hastily introduced to ward off rustiness. Muller scored 12 goals in five games in that maiden campaign, while he scored 10 goals against Galatasaray and Omonia Nicosia in the opening stages of the old European Cup. www.goal.com/en-gh/news/12/spain/2012/12/09/3591208/breaking-news-messi-equals-mullers-record-of-85-goals-in-a?source=breakingnews

I thought he said that the security challenge in our country is under control? Why is he speaking using a projector? Dream can be achieved if we go to sleep. How can we go to sleep if any moment from now, our village can be a victim of attack by this terrorist? How can we sleep if there is no electricity? How can we sleep if our stomach is empty because of high prices of our commodities? It's about time that the FG should give us result, not empty reassurances. |
Lagos – President Goodluck Jonathan has urged Nigerians to put aside all religious differences and strive to build one great and united nation. Jonathan made the appeal at the 7th edition of “The Experience’’, a gospel musical show held at the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), Lagos on Friday night. “There’s nothing we cannot accomplish as a nation as long as we can put aside our religious differences. The road ahead demands great sacrifices but there is no shortcut to greatness,” he said. He said though 2012 had been a very challenging year for the country, it was a testament to the indomitable spirit of the people they could still gather to thank God. The president, who spoke via a recorded video message projected to a big screen at the venue, said: “This is an evidence that the Nigeria we dream of can be achieved.’’ He thanked Nigerians for praying for the country and said: “As long as there are committed Nigerians praying for our leaders, there shall be success.’’ The programme which had more than 500,000 people in attendance was organised by Pastor Paul Adefarasin of the House on the Rock Church. Gospel artists that featured included Don Moen, Chevelle Franklyn, Deitrick Haddon, Israel Houghton, Fred Hammond, John Francis and Micah Stampley. There were also performances by Sammie Okposo, Mike Aremu, Timi Dakolo, South Africa’s Soweto Spiritual Singers, Chosen Treasure, the choir of House on the Rocks and Michelle Williams who rendered the Nigerian anthem. The event also featured great men of God who led the congregation in prayers for the country. Among the ministers of the gospel were former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon, who registered his joy at being at this year’s event. He congratulated the convener, Adefarasin, on a very successful event. Gowon lamented the present situation in some parts of northern Nigeria. “What is happening in the north bleeds my heart. I thought after the bloodshed we’ve had over the years, we will not have any more but sadly we are still having it. “Prayers are better than guns and weapons,” he said, as he led the congregation in prayers. Rev. Felix Meduonye of the Foursquare Gospel Church prayed for improved infrastructure and electricity in Nigeria. Among dignitaries at the programme were the First Lady of Lagos State, Mrs Abimbola Fashola, Gov. Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State and his wife and Ayo Oritsejafor the president of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN). Successor companies of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria and the National Independent Power Project have indicated plans to generate 6,873 megawatts of on-grid electricity for distribution across Nigeria by the end of 2013. The Chief Executive Officer of Egbin Power Plant,Lagos, Mike Uzoigwe, disclosed this in Abuja Friday during the performance agreement signing ceremony involving the Minister of State for Power, Hajiya Zainab Kuchi, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr. Dere Awosika and chief executive officers of parastatals in the ministry. Uzoigwe said the successor companies of PHCN will generate 3,879MW while the National Independent Power Project and Independent Power Producers will generate the extra 2500MW, which will bring available capacity on the national grid to 6,873MW by the end of 2013. He said the target was part of the outcome of the meeting between Kuchi, the Presidential Task Force on Power and the CEOs of all the PHCN successor companies that reviewed the capability and performance of all generation stations. "Some of the NIPP units have been fully commissioned but cannot run due to gas supply associated problems. The Geregu power plants still experience gas shortage," added Uzoigwe. While commenting on the ministry's efforts at resolving the labour crisis that has been a snag on the privatisation of the company, the minister noted that the ministry would adopt an alternative measure to address the issue. She said: "In terms of labour issues, I will not say we are absolutely on top of it but we are very focused. We are very focused and we are about taking an alternative measure in order to ensure that we finalise that. "With the unbundling of the PHCN, we need to resolve this. And by the end of March, we will finally go solo in terms of Discos and Gencos contracting. BPE is trying to finalise and resolve labour issues. We are focused on this." The minister also noted that the performance agreement implementation would be monitored to ensure success but that the issue of sanction will not be necessary unless it becomes absolutely unavoidable. Speaking on behalf of the electricity distribution companies, the CEO of Ikeja Distribution Company, Mr. Chris Akanmou said that the companies on Thursday came up with some indicators for the actualisation of adequate power distribution as regards President Goodluck Jonathan'a economic agenda. He said: "By the end of next year, there would have been an achievement of universal metering of power. Some of the indicators are that there will be immediate replacement of dead equipment especially transformers. We are committed to the replacement of any dead equipment especially the transformers." Also, the CEO of Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Company, Rumundaka Wonodi said 41 companies had come forward to discuss with his organisation, adding that NBET was close to signing its first Power Purchase Agreement. According to him, the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission has already issued certificates of no objection to the deals, "which are now being reviewed by the Attorney General of the Federation." He also noted that by the end of next year, the negotiations would have resulted in projects that could yield 2000MW of electricity from gas and 1000MW from coal. www.thisdaylive.com/articles/power-phcn-nipp-target-6873mw-in-2013/132955/ |

With the Chinese Super League over, Didier Drogba used one of his newly freed-up evenings to host a swanky dinner at a hotel in London last night to present each of his former Champions League-winning Chelsea teammates with a "Super Bowl-style" ring to commemorate their victory in Munich last season. Drogba had the personalised rings made by a Beverly Hills designer jeweller at a cost of around 800,000 pounds and doled them out to his ex- brethren at the Wyndham Grand Chelsea Harbour -- though several players, including Fernando Torres, Petr Cech and Juan Mata, along with the man who oversaw the Blues' European triumph, former manager Roberto Di Matteo, were not in attendance for one reason or another. On stage, Drogba told his former teammates: "I wanted to give something to the team so we can all look back and remember that achievement," before pointing to John Terry in the audience and saying, "You're my hero and everyone at Chelsea loves you." Droggo had obviously had a few white wine spritzers by this point. Here are the Chelsea boys with their glitzy trinkets.. www.soccernet.espn.go.com/blog/_/name/thetoepoke/id/930?cc=3888

Two months after the Lagos State Government commenced the enforcement of its new traffic law restricting the operation of commercial motorcycles, a.k.a. okada, on 475 roads in the metropolis, it is still business as usual for the riders as they continue to ply the restricted roads. P.M.NEWS investigations revealed that after the initial bravado by the state government to enforce the law which led to the seizure of about 3,000 motorcycles belonging to offenders, law enforcement officials appeared tired and this has emboldened the riders to continue plying the restricted routes. A close monitoring of the 475 restricted routes by P.M.NEWS revealed that some okada riders were still plying the routes. These recalcitrant riders can be seen on Oba Ogunji Road, Acme Road, Ikorodu Road, Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, Lagos -Badagry Expressway, Herbert Macaulay Way and other restricted routes. The activities of these disobedient riders are more pronounced at Pen Cinema, Agege, Acme Road, Lagos- Abeokuta Expressway, Lagos- Ikorodu Road Lekki-Epe Eexpressway. At Pen Cinema, Agege, the riders now operate with impunity by parking on the median near the Women Development Centre, in the morning and late evening to pick passengers. Policemen at the nearby Pen Cinema, it was gathered, always send policemen to the area to apprehend them but the cops end up extorting money from the riders. At Mobil Road, Oke-Ira, Ogba, a large number of okada riders operated on the restricted road unchallenged. On Iju Road, Agege, the story is the same. Okada riders operate on the prohibited route and constitute nuisance as usual in deviance of the law. Likewise at Fagba and Abule Egba areas, okada riders operate with impunity. They also ply the ever-busy Agege Motor Road as the police and government officials seem to have gone to sleep. It was on this road that Governor Babatunde Fashola personally arrested a police officer riding on okada last week. On Acme Road, Ogba, the law seems to be ineffective as a large number of okada riders ply the prohibited route throughout the day. The same scenario was observed along Akilo and Agidingbi roads. On Ekoro Road, Abule Egba, okada riders are making a lot of money by plying the prohibited route. Also in Command, Ipaja the motorcyclists operate as there is no law barring them from the route. On Lekki-Epe expressway, okada riders are having a field day as they operate unchallenged. The same situation was observed at Victoria Island and some areas in Ikoyi. Investigations also revealed that majority of the motorcycle riders found in restricted areas of the state are security officials who now use the opportunity of the ban to make brisk money by using their uniforms to flout the law. As a result, some of the riders who had earlier abandoned the business are gradually returning while many of them make friends with policemen, soldiers and officials of the Lagos State Road Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) to evade arrest. “When they seized my first okada, few days after they began the implementation of the traffic law, I waited to know what next to do. But I realised that the thing to do is to have a policeman as a friend. So I bought one of the seized motorcycles from a policeman at N15, 000 and went back to the business. “Though it is risky to ride okada in Lagos now, those of us who have the courage still make our money,” Okechukwu Ani, an Igbo man residing in Agege, said, adding that anytime he was caught, he always sought the assitance of his police friend. Another rider, Sunday Emo, who picks passengers from Pen Cinema to the Secretariat, said it was risky but that the riders are now very careful. “It is now a case of the cat and mouse relationship. We know that if we are arrested, our okada is seized and we may be prosecuted, but now, we are more careful than before. “These days, as we ride, we ask our colleagues the situation of the roads. We no longer wait to pick passengers in secretariat. Once we get there, the passenger, who must have paid us before reaching the place, jumps down and we move on,” he said. Some of the riders also told P.M. NEWS that they decided to engage in the risky venture because they have no alternatives. “Of course, the law was passed despite our efforts to persuade the government against it, but what is the same government doing to cushion the effects of the restriction on our lives?” asked Victor Akinwunmi, a rider who still plies the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway. Chairman, Okada Riders Union, Ikeja branch, Mr Olukayode Amadi advised government to deploy a taskforce on all restricted routes to stop okada riders from plying them and leave riders to ply the inner roads. “If the government should deploy the taskforce on all prohibited routes, okada riders will be forced to use the inner streets and the police should not arrest our men in the streets that we are not banned from plying,” he said. Commenting on the flouting of the law by okada riders, PPRO, Lagos State Police Command, Ngozi Braide lamented that okada riders did not want to comply with the traffic law. She accused them of being hostile to policemen trying to enforce the law. “When we try to arrest them, they will start blackmailing us. We will try our best to ensure that okada riders obey the law,” she stated. Reacting to the development, Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Aderemi Ibirogba said the law was still on course and that government was ever ready to ensure its success. He said government was not helpless in enforcing the law. Ibirogba stated that the mere fact that some okada riders flouted the law did not mean that it was not working, adding that several okada riders had left the prohibited routes. “If somebody is trying to make the last minute rush and dodge, it cannot be used to gauge the law. The law has planted the right thing to do in the minds of Lagosians and everybody is now aware of the existence of the law. The law has awaken the consciousness of all of us that we don’t take things for granted. “Even those who are trying to evade and dodge law enforcement officers in breaking the law, know the law exists. They are operating illegally. We are all law enforcers and we have to take a decision not to break the law,” he said. The commissioner stated that government would try as much as possible to ensure that okada riders were not allowed to ply the restricted routes, adding that with time, 100 per cent compliance would be achieved. www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2012/12/07/toothless-traffic-law-okada-riders-defy-fashola/ |

The Will of Ikemba Nnewi and Ezeigbo Gburu-gburu, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu which was read weekend before members of his family at the probate registry of the Enugu state High Court has been described as sacrosanct. This assertion was made in a press interview in his Enugu chambers, yesterday, by Chief Emeka Onyemelukwe, the personal lawyer and close associate and confidant of the late leader of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) who passed on in a London hospital Nov 24, 2011. He said the clarification became necessary in view of some uncomplimentary media reports attributed to some members of the Ojukwu dynasty including one of the sons, Emeka Jnr. He said that the will was registered in the Enugu High Court on July 9, 2005, while the codicil which was to give details and correct any mistakes in the will was dated Dec 16, 2009. Tendering various documents, most of them legal papers and court briefs and motions where he was copiously authorized and mandated to draft, sign and or represent the late sage in courts and at other such important occasions, Onyemelukwe stated that he has been close to him since his return from exile in Ivory Coast many years ago. That virtually all Ojukwu’s legal papers remain in his custody till date, including those of properties and chattels willed to Emeka Jnr who now claimed he never knew him as his father’s lawyer or friend. He described Emeka’s assertion that he did not know him as unfortunate, “even when I was the Master of Ceremony at his wedding to the daughter of Chief Cyprian Ekwensi, the late literary giant, in the early 90s”. He saw such claim as that of a baby adult who may never grow up. The lawyer also debunked Emeka’s claim that Bianca, the young wife to his late father apparently had a fore knowledge of the contents of the Will when she sent some aides to move away her personal belongings from the Nnewi house that was eventually willed to him ahead of the disclosure last Friday, Nov 30, 2012. He said that ahead of the Nov 25, 2012 family thanksgiving at Nnewi, Bianca sent some of her aides to clean the house but they were seized and beaten up mercilessly and detained by Emeka. It took the intervention of the larger Ojukwu family and other illustrious sons of Anambra who sued for peace. So, immediately after the event, she decided to move her belongings to another of the many other buildings within premises, to avert further crises and show of shame. Engr Mark Ezemba, one of the witnesses to the will was Ojukwu’s Bestman during his wedding with Bianca; While Justice Iguh was chairman at the wedding reception of Ojukwu Jnr. Onyemelukwe was very emphatic that no other person knew or saw the contents of the will before it was read last week. He said that in the course of drawing up the will, he reminded Ikemba on about two occasions to remember his son Emeka. That Ikemba said he had already handed over to him a money spinning multi-storey building with shops and offices known as No 26, Sokoto Rd, adjacent to Onitsha Main Market to him, just as he had bequeathed 7 Forrest Crescent, Ekulu GRA Enugu and the other property at Jabi, Abuja as gifts to his wife Bianca. Ikemba said that since he gave all his older children the best foreign education possible, he would made it possible to give the younger ones from Bianca similar opportunity. Counterring also the claim that Emeka was not informed about the date for the reading of the will, Onyemelukwe tendered three different text messages to Emeka’s three different active telephone lines, “The will is to be read at the High Court Enugu, at 8.30am, note the change of time, which was due to other engagements of the Chief Registrar…”, “Please remember the reading of your late father’s Will on Friday, Nov 30, 2012 at 10am, at the Probate registry, High Court, Enugu. Kindly inform your brother Okigbo and Mimi”, “Emeka, please be informed that your father’s Will will be read on Nov 30, 2012. www.leadership.ng/nga/articles/41695/2012/12/04/ojukwus_lawyer_explains_his_will.html |

Okupe is a big fool and Jonathan is the most clueless president Nigeria has ever had. I don't know if they think Nigerians are fools that can be deceived easily. So after people have lost their lives we are supposed to clap for them that it could have been more because they only allowed 30% of the bombs to go off. But the big question is how did they arrive at the figures? Do they know all Boko Haram's operation to know what percentage of their bombs went off? Do they know the number of bombs they have?As the JTF put their lives at risk to recover these bombs their thieving politician friends are financing the purchase of more bombs. What is happening to all the money that was budgeted for security? The year is almost over and security in the country has not improved despite the huge cost. |
