HealthOver Two Billion People In Zika Prone Areas by femiakinbully(op): 3:32pm On Apr 21, 2016
A newly published journal says more than two billion people are currently living in parts of the world where the Zika virus can spread.

The latest research showed that mapping Zika was more complex than simply defining where the mosquito can survive.

By learning where the Zika virus could thrive, the researchers are now able to predict where else may be affected.

One of the researchers, Dr. Oliver Brady, disclosed the first maps to come out that really used the data they had for the virus, stressing that earlier maps were based on Zika virus being like dengue or chikungunya.

“We are the first to add the very precise geographic and environmental conditions data we have on Zika,” Dr. Brady told BBC.

For now, the researchers confirmed that large areas of South America are vulnerable while 2.2 billion people live in areas defined as being “at risk”.

This comes barely a week after the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed that the virus causes severe birth defects.

PoliticsAnti-corruption Ambassador: Ekweremadu Replies EFCC by femiakinbully(op): 3:18pm On Apr 21, 2016
The Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, yesterday responded to the denial of the anti-corruption award given to him by the National Assembly Liaison Officer of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Suleiman Bakari. Read the statement released by Ekweremadu’s media aide, Uche Anichukwu below;

“We want to put it on record that Mr. Suleiman Bakari and his team applied for and susbsequently paid a courtesy call on the Deputy President of the Senate in his office on Tuesday, April 19, 2016. Mr. Bakari, amongst other issues he raised, solicited the support of the Senate and National Assembly towards the anti-corruption crusade of the present administration, and even presented a frame with a bold picture of President Muhammadu Buhari, bearing the inscription: “If we dont kill corruption, corruption will kill Nigeria”.

“Mr. Bakari also, on behalf of the Acting Chairman, management, and staff of the EFCC, decorated Senator Ekweremadu as an anti-corruption ambassador of the EFCC.

“As for the purported claim by the EFCC spokesperson that the agency had never and could not have decorated anybody as an anti-corruption ambassador, since, according to him, “the commission is not in the habit of awarding titles to individuals”, we wish to refer him to December 7, 2007, when the Nuhu Ribadu-led EFCC confered the Role Model Award in the fight against corruption on certain persons, including a former president of the senate, a taxi driver, and a former justice of the Federal High Court at the Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja, “ the statement said.

According to him, the denial by the EFCC coming in two different statements within a few hours is “baffling, inexplicable, and contradicitory.”

CrimeArtisans Clone Ambode’s Phone Number by femiakinbully(op): 2:20pm On Apr 20, 2016
The Department of State Security (DSS) Wednesday arraigned two artisans before an Isolo Magistrate Court for allegedly cloning the mobile line of Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode.

The suspects – Rilwanu Jamiu and Balogun Stanley Oyewole, who claimed to be a cocoa dealer, were said to have attempted to perfect a N50 million transfer with the said mobile line.

Prosecuting counsel from the DSS, Mr. Peter Okerinmodun told Chief Magistrate Adeola Adedayo that the suspects were arrested after using the cloned mobile line of the Governor to send a text message to the Accountant General of the State requesting for transfer of N50 million.

He said the suspects conspired with others now at large to commit the crime on February 10, 2016 at about 10:02hours.

Count one read: “That you Rilwanu Jamiu (M) of No 10, Giwa Street, Oka Akoko Street, Lagos and Balogun Stanley Oyewole (M) of No 65, Unity Street, Ikotun, Lagos and others at large on 10th February, 2016 about 1002hours at Lagos within Lagos Magisterial District, conspired to commit felony to wit: obtaining by false pretence and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 312 (2) and (3) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State.”

Count two read: “That you Rilwanu Jamiu, Balogun Stanley Oyewole of the above addresses, and others at large, on above date, time and place fraudulently cloned the Glo line of His Excellency, the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, with intent to induce him by false pretence and used the Glo line to send a text message for the transfer of a sum of fifty million Naira (N50m) and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 312 (2) and (3) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State.”

After the charges were read to the accused persons, they pleaded not guilty, while the prosecutor asked that they should be kept in protective custody pending the outcome of the legal advice of the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) in view of the fact that their lives could be endangered by other suspects who are on the run.

But Magistrate Adedayo overruled Okerinmodun, saying the DSS ought to have kept them in custody judging by the fact that their lives could be in danger.

She said since the offence for which the accused persons were charged to court was bailable and the fact that the Magistrate Court is a court of summary trial, she was inclined to grant bail to the accused persons.

She, therefore, admitted them to bail in the sum of N1 million each and two sureties in like sum.

Magistrate Adedayo ruled that one of the sureties must be a religious or community leader within the jurisdiction of the court, and that the accused persons must provide five years tax clearance certificates.

She further ordered the accused persons to be remanded in Kirikiri Prison pending the perfection of the conditions attached to their bail, and adjourned the matter to May 10.

Foreign AffairsThree-year-old Boy Survives 15-storey Fall (photos) by femiakinbully(op): 2:59pm On Apr 19, 2016
Three-year-old boy miraculously survives falling from a 15-storey balcony by landing face first on a tiny patch of grass

A curious toddler who accidentally tumbled from an apartment window on the 15th floor of a building survived the ordeal yet remains in a critical condition in hospital.

The three-year-old, named as Qiqi, evaded the attentions of his parents who were horrified to discover he had crawled through the open window of their flat, according to People's Daily Online.

The fortunate child landed face down on a soft patch of grass at the base of the large apartment block in Changzhou, Jiangsu province, east China, on the morning of April 11.

When his mother went to the bathroom, Qiqi used the opportunity of freedom to explore the apartment's treacherous balcony and fell as his mother returned to the room.

He hit a clothing line half-way down on his fall and luckily landed on a 10ft patch of grass on the ground, which had been significantly softened by recent rainfall.

Qiqi and his parents had only moved into their new home a few days earlier.

The boy's unconscious body was discovered by a security guard doing his rounds in the precinct, and rushed him to hospital with his mother who was convinced he had been killed.

Qiqi is said to have suffered a fractured skull, fractured hip bone, and broken ribs.

Additionally he sustained significant. damage to his left lung and kidneys.

His condition is said to be critical and doctors are as yet unsure whether he will make a full recovery.

The relieved mother told reporters: "It really is a miracle. If he had fallen just 10 or 15 centimetres to either side of the grass, he would have landed on concrete."

AgricultureFG To Introduce Soil Test Kits To Farmers by femiakinbully(op): 1:55pm On Apr 19, 2016
The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is to introduce soil test kits to farmers nationwide as part of efforts to boost food production, an official has said.

Prof Victor Chude, the Director, Farm Inputs Support Services in the ministry, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja.

Chude said that the technology, known as `Soil Doctor’, would enable farmers to conduct instant test on the soil, to determine its strengths and weaknesses.

He noted that soil testing was critical to farming as it guide farmers on the best fertilisers to apply in various soil types.

He noted that the current system of blanket application of fertiliser results in waste of scarce fertilisers.

“This is because the soil is not well prepared to take the nutrients for root interception within its short lifespan of arable cropping.

“Soil Doctor analyses the fertility of the soil by sending a message to the cloud, and the result comes immediately, telling you the fertiliser to be used for a particular soil.

“This technology is an improvement on the previous soil test method where field samples are taken to the laboratory for analysis and results gotten within a couple of weeks.

“The kits will be introduced to farmers across the country through the Department of Climate Change and Agricultural Land Management Services.

“Currently, 65 extension agents are being trained on how to use this new technology and they will in turn train the farmers.’’

Chude, who is the President, Soil Science Society of Nigeria, also stressed the need for improved teaching of soil testing and other soil management skills to small farmers.

He said that ‎soil testing was very important because it enables farmers to adopt new soil, crop and fertiliser recommendations for a particular field.

“Soil testing simply means the analysis of a soil sample to determine its nutrient content, composition and other characteristics such as acidity level.

“Testing a field and using the recommendations that come with it help plants receive adequate amount of nutrients needed for growth and improved productivity.’’

He noted that awareness creation on soil testing among farmers would revolutionise agriculture in the country.

According to him, a state-to-state soil testing programme has been conducted under the Food and Agriculture Organisation and National Programme for Food Security programme.

“With the availability of Geographic Information System, modern techniques can be used to go beyond soil fertility map to evaluate soil capacity and develop calibration curves for crops in each state.

“Unfortunately, the current system of blanket fertiliser use results in a waste of scarce fertiliser because the soil is not well prepared to take the nutrients for root interception within its short lifespan of arable cropping.”

Chude, however, identified challenges to soil sampling such as lack of facilities and poor transportation infrastructure.
