hi, i'm a fresh graduate about to go on NYSC and interested in agriculture, Hoping to be posted to one of the south western states(not Lagos), what crop would you recommend that a novice can go into, thank you

please who did you sell your rice to? was it to a mill or straight to the consumers?
also wasnt bird scaring very laborious? i understand birds become a pest when the rice starts bearing fruit. how long is the duration till when you harvest?

I just recently started rice farming. Irrigation rice farming since we are in dry season. Looking at this thread,i cant help but laugh. Most of the things i read here is far from the truth especially concerning capital needed to start. I am at the nursey stage of rice farming waiting to transplant. My oldest nursery is about 10days old. Anyway, if considering rice farming, unless you have alot of money; go manual rather than mechanical. And be involved in ALL the process. From clearing the farm land to planting and fertilizers. Why i say some of the information isnt correct is that, when you are doing irrigation farming expect to spend more money than someone who would depend on rain water but the benefit is that you get to plant year round. In my case i dug a bore hole and installed irrigation channels. RIce farming is labour intensive. I am starting small as an experiment on about 5-6 plots of land excluding nursery. Would keep you guys updated as i go on. i actually came here looking for the best techniques of bird repellant. i might go for a combination method.

I personally haven't tried them, but I've been following them since they started over a year ago and haven't seen anyone crying foul.
They also have great presence offline as they have received awards for their involvement in tech and agriculture.
The only problem might be that their ROI isn't enough for some people who are looking for more profit

Have you tried it and found it successful? Can't they just ignore the poisonous plants and move deeper into your farm?

So I started this plantain farm last year after my NYSC. it was a hard decision for me to take to invest in farming with little experience in the field.

I Summouned the courage of starting this business with the little capital I have.

Today I have 3000 plantain stand which will be ready by February or march.

To all the job seekers out dia, pls invest in farming most especially plantain farming and see how ur life will look like in 9month.

These are fish pond nets. I bought for N6000 each but I understand its sold for N3500 each.

What I intend to do with it? Im not covering the entire rice field, but the idea is to use to make 'volleyball net-like'' situations across the rice field. The idea is that since the birds will usually dive into the field to feed on the rice, they will will several bump into the nets placed above the rice fields in haphazard manners(irregular spaced).

This I presume will cause them more troubles, stress and bodily harms. If a bird scaring strategy does not cause harm or terrify this birds greatly, they will habituate the system and still feed on the rice field.

However, this strategy will be used together with other strategies.. The total net covering will be the best, but my maths points that its initial cost is way beyond what I can 'stake on a new game/new horse'

But what are the dimensions of the net you bought? Like the length and breadth or its area

frm my knowledge, they are called cold blooded animals because they cant regulate their temperatures, so they use the sun to heat up and stay away from the sun when they are too hot

Lol I no know wetin dey worry dem for that school. They need to build two more hostels and dilute out students to be 2 in a room. It doesn't make any sense to be paying 1 million/per year and be 4 in a room as if na Unilag.

Surprisingly landmark is far better maintained in comparison. You see their buildings in Landmark looking cool with no cracks, lawns are far better maintained than that of CU. And as per CUCRID tiles, in fact I was disappointed to see tiles falling myself - They need to employ professionals if they must use CU construction agency. Even the perfect set project(residential gate close to library) is dilapidating.

And as per my comparison with AUN hostel. I was just trying to put up a fight lol. These AUN folks would always try to rub it in that they have better classes and rooms

you shouldn't always go online fighting that cu is better than all other schools in all aspects cause it can never be

This is trash talk, reminds me of when automatic gear cars just came to Nigeria and people were wondering how to jump start it.
Point 1, 2 and 3 are trash because Telsa cars have a range of 500 miles, i drive only 200 miles a week to work.
We have power issues in Nigeria yet you can charge your phone or laptop to post this trash, where did you get the power? These cars can be charged at home with NEPA or generator while you are watching telemondo.
Point 4, relatively expensive, do you even know how much other cars you see everyday on Nigerian roads cost, how much is range rover and see how many we have on the road.
Point 5, Maintenance? Did you even do any research on these EVs before posting this trash. They are electrical not mechanical and will require far less maintaining since they have less moving parts.
Conclusion. Please stop posting trash and do your research.

take it easy. no need to fight. a Tesla is still expensive and an average person cant afford it.
you cant compare the charging time of a car to that of a laptop and using a generator to charge is really no different from using fuel power. and it would greatly increase your power bill especially if you're using a prepaid meter
point 5 acknowledges that you only need to rotate tyres as maintenance, but then if there is a big fault, there is nowhere to fix that here in nigeria.

But these electric vehicles suppose don develope reach the stage that they can charge themselves either by generating power as they move, or from solar.

there isn't enough surface area on a typical car to generate enough electricity. the best that can happen is that charging stations are powered by solar panels or better batteries to last longer

After digging the pond and bagged all the edges I bought the following

Nets- 6000 I used 2 which is 12,000: this net is used to protect the fish from predators such as frog, Snakes, birds......
Four 6 inches PVC pipes one cost 3,500 I bought 4 which is 15,000: This is the exit way for the water to come out of the pond through a flow through system.
2X2 wood cut into 1ft size to be used as pegs to hold the net.
Industrail salt 1,500 naira: This is used to lime the ponds to kill bacteria, reduce PH, drive away predators and also bring out nutrients from the soil. The Salt was used for the process called liming .

please what measurment was the net you bought for 6000? and the mesh size

This is just the casual labour on your farm, we have not talked about inputs (fertilizer, chemicals etc), operation cost and equipments.

Projections: 4 tonnes in a hectar and 1 tonne is about 160k.
Note: I am also preparing to start next year but I have mentors who re guiding me. I hope this ll help and i wish u best of luck
