For me, the siege of Port Harcourt for 11 days by security apparatus indicates that there is something even beyond the madam herself. My last word to her isthat ‘be a lady first’. Before being a First Lady. You cannot be a First Lady without being a lady. This is the only advise I have for her because now it is evidentthat she is getting away with murder in this country only because she has the backing of her husband and that she is being used in my view politically. When it gets to a stage where an unelected person, a mere domestic appendage of power can seize control of a place for 11 days and as a result of her presence, the governor of that state is told by a policeman that ‘you cannot pass here because the queen is there. What’s sort of jungle are we living in? Again, there is atthe very least vicarious responsibilities that must be laid at the doorsteps of President (Goodluck) Jonathan. Above all, I am calling on Mr. President, openly and publicly to please curb the excesses of your wife. She is a wife, she is an unconstitutional being, she should not be empowered to such an extent that she is flouting the prerogative, the rights and the responsibilities of the governor of any state, in Rivers, Lagos or in any other state. I have read in the papers the other day about the youth crying. What is it? Is she the first First Lady we have had in this country? This illegality is becoming very intolerable. I notice she’s being used, I mean the First Lady is now being used directly or indirectly by the President to distablise or reduce the authority of anelected governor. We have now reached the bottom ofobscenity and it got to stop. Thank You. http://leadership.ng/news/140713/soyinka-s-comment-first-lady-unedited

Aminu Sule Lamido, the 34-year old son of Jigawa State governor, Sule Lamido, who is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for offences bordering on money laundering was Friday convicted by Justice Fatu Riman of the Federal High Court, Kano, and ordered to forfeit 25 per cent of the undeclared sum of $40,000. But the governor’s son won’t be serving any jail term. He will walk free after forfeiture of the 25 per cent of the undeclared sum. Aminu was arrested on December 11, 2012 at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport on his way to Egypt for failure to declare the $50,000 in his possession. He only declared $10,000 to the Nigerian Customs Service. When he was arraigned before Justice Riman on Monday February 4, 2013, Aminu pleaded not guilty to the charge and was remanded in prison pending hearing of his application for bail. The charge against the accused reads: “That you Aminu Sule Lamido on or about 11th day of December, 2012 at the Mallam Aminu International Airport, Kano within the Jurisdiction of the Federal High Court while transporting in cash, the sum of $50,000 (Fifty Thousand Dollars Only) from Nigeria to Cairo, Egypt, falsely declare to the Nigerian Customs the sum of $10,000 (Ten Thousand Dollars Only) instead of the said sum of $50,000 (Fifty Thousand Dollars Only) as required under Section 12 of the Foreign Exchange (Monitoring and Miscellaneous Provisions) Act Cap F34 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004 and Section 2(3) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 2(5) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2011”. At the resumed hearing on February 5, 2013, Justice Riman granted the accused person bail in the sum of N8million and two sureties in like sum. In the course of trial, which got underway April 19, 2013, the prosecution called four witnesses and tendered documents which were admitted as exhibits. One of its witnesses, Sanusi Ahmed who is an operative of the EFCC, told the court that the accused person only registered $10,000 in the Nigerian Customs Declaration Form only for a search to reveal that he had $50,000 on him. He identified the Customs Declaration Form when it was shown to him. The document was accepted by court as exhibit 1. The two witnesses called by the defence are the Chief Press Secretary to the Jigawa State Governor, Umar Kyare and the wife of the accused, Samira Aminu Sule. At the last adjourned date, July 9, the court reserved ruling for July 12, after the parties had closed their cases and adopted their written addresses. In convicting the accused person, the trial court held that the defence had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt. |

The judgment overturns that of the Lagos High Court which sentenced both men to death by hanging. The presiding judge accused the lower court of being “stroked to secure a conviction by all means.” Mr. Al-Mustapha was a former chief security officer to the late dictator, Sani Abacha. He was sentenced to death on January 30 for conspiracy and murder of Mrs. Abiola. Mrs. Abiola, 45, was shot in Lagos on June 4, 1996, as the lower court ruled, on the orders of Mr. Al-Mustapha. More details coming soon …

Abuja (NAN) – The Senate President, Sen. David Mark, has urged the Federal Government to ensure that tangible results were delivered to justify the establishment of the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P) Mark gave the advice on Thursday in Abuja while inaugurating the Senate Special Ad-Hoc Committee on SURE-P. He advised the Federal Government to make good its promise to expend the fund on key areas of development that would have direct impact on the lives of the people. “The removal of fuel subsidy can only be justified with practical evidence of the things that you have done with the money that you realise from fuel subsidy. “It is not a matter of statistics on pages of newspapers. It has to be what people can see and attest to. “Government must be able to show people physical infrastructure done with the SURE-P money, so that people will know that subsidy removal is done on the basis of good reasons. “There should be clear evidence of things like improvement in empowerment of women and youth, healthcare for women and children as well as in mass transit. “Whether there will be further subsidy removal will depend entirely on what we have done with the money realised,‘’ he said. Mark said the Senate’s Special Ad-hoc Committee on SURE-P must brace up to a successful discharge of its mandate by effective performance of its oversight functions. He charged the committee to urgently commence work to ensure that the projects earmarked were adequately monitored to ensure that they were promptly delivered according to specifications. “This committee is very important because the result will be very glaring for all to see. If you don’t perform your oversight functions itwill be obvious. “You have a very difficult task ahead as a committee, because if people don’t begin to see these projects immediately, they will startagitating. “I want you to start work yesterday, not today or tomorrow, ‘’Mark advised. Earlier, the Chairman of the 13-member committee, Sen. Abdul Ningi, pledged the determination of the committee to monitor every amount expended on projects under SURE-P. Ningi said the committee would cooperate with all stakeholders to enthrone accountability and probity in the implementation of the SURE-P intervention projects. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/07/sure-p-mark-urges-fg-to-deliver-practical-results/ |
