The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto, Most Revd. Matthew Kukah, has warned against blanket demonisation of herdsmen, especially of the Fulani stock. He warned that such actions could be preamble to a breakout of violent confrontation against the Fulani. According to Bishop Kukah, hate speech often preceded any genocide experienced in history. He spoke on Tuesday at a colloquium on fake news and hate speech organised by the Olusegun Obasanjo Centre for African Studies, an arm of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) in Abuja. He said Nigerians “have to be very careful” before the situation degenerates beyond control. He likened the uproar and profiling of the Fulani to what happened to the Igbo leading up to the Nigerian civil war between 1967 and 1970. “If it is Fulani today, yesterday it was the Igbos,” he said. Reacting to the recent controversy on the use of picture of a herdsman on the Nigerian passport booklet, Kukah said he was almost swayed by the fake news, before he got a copy of the passport himself. The cleric displayed his passport to illustrate the content and debunk the insinuations that it carried only a picture of a herdsman. “When I look at my passport, it has the coat of arm and map of Nigeria. Then right in front of the data page where all my information is, I have the Bini. I am not a Bini man, but I am eminently proud of this. I didn’t even know it was here, because I had to go through the passport page by page. “When I opened the passport the first thing I saw was Zuma Rock, then I see Tiv dancers. Who gave them permission to put Tiv dancers? Then I got to next page, before I came to this poor Fulani man who is standing with his cows. “Why is it exciting? It is exciting because this is the time for us to ‘hate’, literally tag every Fulani as a herdsman. We are on a very dangerous precipice,” he said. Kukah said it was time for those in the position of leadership to tame the situation. “Those who lead us should better stand up and tell us where we are going,” he said. The Catholic cleric also urged Nigerians to be each other’s keeper and avoid ethno-religious profiling in dealing with each other. To further tame the spread of hate, Mr Kukah called on media to sieve through in choosing who to give audience to avoid persons who propagate hate and mischief. In his opening remarks, NOUN’s vice chancellor, Abdalla Adamu, said liberalisation of the media space by technology provided opportunity for easy spread of fake news and hate speech. He lamented increase in hate speech in the polity which, he said, will not augur well for the society. “What we see are labels over crimes. The moment you start talking about labels, you are breeding hate speech,” Adamu said. In her contribution, former journalist and politician, Chris Anyanwu, also bemoaned “too much of this hate and bile stuff” warning that it could consume the country if not properly tackled. “We have to be careful not to use our own hands to set our own house on fire and someone will sit there in Russia laughing,” she said. Ms Anyanwu, a former senator, said the media has a big role to play in reversing the trend, but lamented poor quality of journalism currently in the country. She said the rise of “brown envelope” in journalism has bred poor attitude to work thus some reporters rely on press releases churned out by newsmakers. Commercial activities in the Federal Capital city were on Tuesday halt momentarily following a protest against the menace of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, INM. The protest, which was championed by the Concerned Women/Africa Arise for Change Network, was well attended by angry Nigerians, who insisted that the activities of INM might have political undertones. The rally took off at Unity Fountain and terminated at the National Assembly complex. Speaking during the rally, Princess Ajibola, convener of the group, called on the National Assembly to pass a resolution, compelling the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation to file a suit for the court to declare IMN a terrorist organization so that law enforcement agencies can better respond to the threat it poses to the country. She said, “Concerned Nigerians Women and the Africa Arise for Change Network are staging this rally today in order to put it on the record that we are not in any way part of the conspiracy of silence in the glaring threat now posed to the country by the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN). “Nigerians and the entire world were last week treated to the macabre spectacle of IMN members invading the National Assembly, the most important site for our democracy. While every Nigerian has the right to protest to the National Assembly, the intention of the IMN militants was very obvious because they were there to sack the parliament as demonstrated by their attack on the policemen on duty. “IMN attacks on members of the public and security operatives are not new. Killing law enforcement officers is also not new to them. What however became alarming in this instance was the sheer intensity of the attack during which they shot several policemen in addition to wounding others with catapults and cudgels. “Some members of the National Assembly that were in on the game went on the defensive for the IMN insurgents when the invasion was discussed on the floors of the Senate and House of Representatives. These are the lawmakers that would have called for an interim government had IMN succeeded with the evil plot it was executing on behalf of the opposition. “The failure of the plot has however seen the opposition accusing the incumbent government of harshly clamping down on IMN extremists while ignoring their treasonable acts. The opposition, in its criticism, largely ignored the shooting of policemen by the IMN fanatics. It glossed over the attempt to take over the National Assembly as if it was a natural everyday occurrence. It is interesting that while the IMN leader, Mr. Ibraheem El-Zakkay, is being tried for treason in Kaduna, his radicalized members are protesting in Abuja, in yet another confirmation that it is high politics at play. The opposition knows that it is responsible for this latest mayhem and has continued to wrongly accuse the government. This attitude derived from the fact that IMN was running errands for the opposition. “We shall keep up this demand until the IMN is designated a terrorist group. We will not stay silent while neo-terrorists destroy our democracy.” Read more here https://thickmatch.com/el-zakzaky-anti-shiites-protesters-take-nas-call-proscription-imn/

Elder statesman, Tanko Yakasai, on Monday criticized former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, describing his open letter to President Muhammadu Buhari as selfish and unpatriotic, the Nation reports. Reacting to Obasanjo’s letter to Buhari dated July 15, Yakasai said: “I don’t see patriotism in General Obasanjo’s letters. “In fact, all the letters written by General Obasanjo to all Military Heads of State and Presidents of the Federal Republic of Nigeria are not guided by patriotic considerations.” According to him, “My experience with Nigerian political situation is that the top echelons of the Military are always fighting one another, either when in the service or when on retirement. “It is from this angle that I always view most of the writings of General Olusegun Obasanjo to any military officer who is a Head of State or President in Nigeria as unpatriotic. “Even the ones he wrote to former Presidents Goodluck Jonathan and the late Umar Musa Yar’Adua were not patriotic. They were guided by selfish interest.” Yakasai further stated: “General Obasanjo did it during Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida’s era. He did it during the late General Sani Abacha’s regime, which later resulted to accusations that he was trying to overthrow the government, which eventually led to his imprisonment. “General Olusegun Obasanjo also wrote a number of letters during General Abdulsalami Abubakar’s regime and he is still writing letters in this current presidency of General Muhammadu Buhari. “So, this attitude of writing unpatriotic letters has been part of General Olusegun Obasanjo.” Read more here https://thickmatch.com/yakasai-blasts-obasanjo-latest-open-letter-buhari/

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former Governor of Ogun State, Gbenga Daniel have condemned the killing of Mrs. Funke Olakunrin, the daughter of the leader of Afenifere, Pa Reuben Fasoranti by suspected herdsmen. Obasanjo and Daniel called for the arrest of the perpetrators of the act. Obasanjo in his condolence letter to Pa Fasoranti, which was made available to newsmen by his Special Assistant Media, Kehinde Akinyemi on Saturday, in Abeokuta, declared that the country has been diminished by the killing of Olakunrin. He described the killing, by suspected Fulani herdsmen as a worrisome development in the polity. Obasanjo asked security agents to fish out those responsible for the heinous crime. According to Obasanjo, “This is a worrisome development in our polity, especially, at a time when all well-meaning Nigerians are preaching tolerance and political accommodation in national politics. “I must say Nigeria as a whole is diminished by the manner of Funke’s death. We deplore this dastardly act and seize this opportunity to call on governments at all levels to leave no stone unturned in ensuring that our security agents vigorously pursue and find the perpetrators of such heinous crime and make them face the full weight of the law. “We must, together, find solution to all acts of insecurity in the country, particularly acts of banditry, kidnapping, robbery and killing by the suspected Fulani herdsmen. In his reaction to the murder of the nonagenarian’s daughter, Daniel condemned the killing and lamented the growing insecurity in the country, saying, the development calls for an immediate and lasting solution. Daniel said, “With the recent incident, Nigeria is gradually heading towards a dangerous precipice and the fear is that the people might be pushed to seeking alternative means of protecting themselves if governments at all levels are complacent in curbing the activities of hoodlums in whatever guise. “It is high time we found a more proactive measure towards stemming the scourge that is gradually leading us to a state of anarchy. “The activities of the hoodlums masquerading as herdsmen are becoming worrisome by the day and Nigerians, especially the people of the South West are becoming impatient watching their own people being killed nearly on (a) daily basis.” Read more here https://thickmatch.com/fasorantis-daughter-must-find-solution-acts-insecurity-obasanjo/

A septuagenarian, Innocent Nwigwe, has lamented the failure of the police to pay him the sum N200m which a High Court in Imo State awarded in his favour following the killing of his 25-year-old son, Hisreal Nwigwe, by a sergeant, Bassey Ubana. Clutching a certified true copy of the judgment which he gave out to journalists, the bereaved father said the police frustrated every move he had made to enforce the court judgment. Reading paragraph four of the court judgment which stated that “the award of the sum of N200m only is made against the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 6th respondents in favour of the applicant, being fair and reasonable compensation and exemplary damages for the unjustifiable and unlawful killing of Hisrael Olannanyia Nwigwe, the applicant’s son, and loss of affection and psychological trauma suffered by the applicant,” the septuagenarian said that his household, especially his wife, was in agony. He said that the policemen who killed his son was dismissed by the police and arraigned for murder. Nwigwe said, “I am here to tell the world that the Nigeria Police Force has frustrated every move I have made to ensure that the N200m awarded to me by the court since 2017 has not been paid. “Sergeant Bassey Ubana was dismissed for killing my son. My son was a certified nurse. I gave him N1.5m to open a shop in Lagos. It was on the same day that he was killed by Sergeant Bassey and his money was taken away. “I have filed garnishee suit compelling banks to give me the account details of the Nigeria Police Force but to my chagrin, all the banks have said that the Nigeria Police Force has no account with them. “My family is at a loss. My son was killed in his prime. He was only 25 and was full of life. He was a certified nurse who was travelling to Lagos to start a life after graduation. I was the one who gave him the money but he was murdered by Sergeant Bassey and the money was taken away. “I want the world to compel the Nigeria Police Force to respect the judgment of the court. This incident happened in 2016 and judgment was given in my favour in 2017, but up till now, the police have refused the obey the court.” Read more here https://thickmatch.com/police-havent-paid-n200m-killing-son-septuagenarian-cries/
