Peter Obi Made Me To Stop Using First Class - ex Imo Dep Speaker, OZB | #IgbereTV

A former Deputy Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Ozurigbo Ugonna has said that he stopped using first class flights on his trips both within and outside Nigeria, when he met Mr. Peter Obi in an aircraft sitting in the Economy section of the aircraft, even as an incumbent governor of Anambra.

In a conversation in a public forum monitored by Yours Sincerely, the Chairman House Committee on Justice and telecommunications multibillionaire executive in responding to a discussion centered on Peter Obi's responsible management of public resources and genuine humility, agreed that the former Anambra State governor is prudent, humble and in tune with the current mood of the nation.

The member representing Nwangele/Isu/Nkwere/Njaba Federal Constituency who is also a multibillionaire businessman in his own right is seen by many of his admirers and independent observers as sharing a lot in common with the Labour Party Presidential candidate, even though both of them are in different political Parties.

The Umuozu Nwangele born PDP chieftain and returning member of the House of Representatives is one of the numerous young politicians and citizens who have been impacted positively by the exemplary leadership qualities and prudence of Mr. Peter Obi.

*State of the Nigerian Nation**

A typical Nigeria big boy/girl wakes up in the morning, turns off his alarm clock made in China, gets out of his bedsheets woven in India, puts on his clothes made from wool in Bangladesh, shoes from Italy, drinks his orange juice from Spain or France and Brazil, puts milk made in Denmark or Holland in his coffee produced in *Brazil and France.
He jumps into his Toyota Camry car made in Japan to the Total service station owned by France to refuel PMS, imported from Europe and takes his Korean Samsung Galaxy phone made in China and India and buys data for his MTN SIM card owned by (South Africa ).
At noon, he leaves his Coca-Cola Usa office and joins his friend who smokes American or Turkish cigarettes, they eat Thailand rice, drink Italian wines and returns home to watch Manchester United of England or Real Madrid of Spain on DSTV South Africa.

Monday evening youths meeting at the church.
Tuesday choir practice at the church.
Wednesday midweek service at the church. Thursday evangelical meeting at the church.
Friday Bible study and night vigil.
Saturday choir.
Sunday morning first service, afternoon second service.

He or she goes to church with money "Naira currency" paper money to give God the Almighty who is a Spirit but needs Naira?

Those Pastors convinced the people that the money is for God.

The more you give God money the more God will bless you the say. So basically bribery, bribing God to love you.

How much did you gave God before He created you?

You are giving money to another smarter eloquent man whom you are calling daddy pastor, prophet. He eventually will use the money to buy private jet and big cars made in China, UK, USA.
How do you expect this country get better?

Stop being distracted by big titles, big burials, big birthday celebrations projected by Nollywood actors, movies and mega church business that sold religious hope to Nigerians.

Without jobs, without financial empowerments of the youths with cash and opportunities.

Refuse to be intimidated or brain washed.

In Nigeria even if a person dies in accident they will say "it's God's time" . The mentality is 99.99% religious and 00.01% science and knowledge. Nigerians can be smart don't get me wrong but religion has brain washe*d Nigerians.

If Elon Musk was a Nigerian he would have no choice than to be a church owner. Resulting in less jobs creation, less employment for the university graduates.

If prayer is the solution to economic and social development Israel wouldn't have invested heavily in human knowledge, science, security, weapons, nuclear weapons. Nigerians can not be more God's children than Israelis.

In Israel every woman and man is a soldier. Everybody had military training. That's why they are strong even as little as they are.

Israel is around 9 million people!
One state in Nigeria Lagos alone is 14 million people for God sake!

In Nigeria every woman and every man is a copy pastor, apprentice prophet or apprentice bishop.
Churches everywhere, no factories and no companies.

Everyone goes to church or mosque religiously overloaded but dangerous.

Religious people can even insult you more than the native doctors.

Why is everyone in Nigeria is putting everything in God's hands including electricity, school fees, money for food, bad roads, fuel price, even getting their wives pregnant everything is in God's hands?

Does that mean that God gave Nigerians hands that are good for nothing?

So why then do we put everything in the hards of God and expecting miracles? What is wrong with our own hands?

It is the duty of men and women to stand up.
Nigerian should stop being nonchalant, and full of excuses.

Every big nation in this world had a REVOLUTION at one point in time in their history.
French revolution, American Revolution, British Revolution, German Revolution etc.

In Nigeria we have church going revolution, dancing and tweaking revolution, religious youths without jobs is a time bo*mb, without good hospital = untimely deaths, without electricity no small industrial growth, without security = no tomorrow, without dignity.

When you go to vote next time just think about the future of your children. Put the picture of your children in front of your, put the picture of your loved ones in front of you are think before you cast your next vote. Ask your self what kind of country do I want? Jobs, safety, property, electricity, good free hospitals.

I live in France and I believe in God but here in Europe nobody needs to fast and pray before they gets government free money every month 700K to 1M Naira equivalent depending on how many small kids you have.

God's people are perishing because they don't have knowledge, knowledge about mass power, knowledge of resistance, knowledge of their rights, knowledge or their ability, knowledge of their responsibilities to stand up and put and end to the evil governments.

Many politicians are bad but the populations are not serious to bring down the bad politicians. The people are busy praying, watching nollywood, big brother, dancing, clubbing. Imagine what you are praying for in Nigeria, people in Europe who does not even believe in God, them God gave them wisdom to have those things and they are enjoying it already without prayers.

Why are Nigerians only good for dancing, speaking in tongues and quoting scriptures?

Here in Europe we are not using prayers to repair the roads, the hospitals, electricity supply is constant and does not depend on God!

Every Child is paid from the day of birth until the day of death and he or she does not have to be a "good Christian or faithful Muslim"

Everybody is waiting for God's time in Nigeria!

There is nothing like God's time! God does not use time, God does not count 6 seconds make one minute, no sorry. in heaven there is no clock, no time.

God's time is a trick by pastors to keep their customers to stay in the church for as long as they want.
Any day you are ready that day is your God's time. Take actions and take what is yours.

In the world of today ONLY those that answered their own prayers by themselves are safe and well in other words only those that took actions to act.

In Nigeria everybody is a Pastor or claiming to be God's personal PA.

You will see them in millions in churches and mosques every Friday and Sunday asking God for good roads, for food, asking God for jobs, asking God for wife, asking God to kill their enemies, asking God to give them more children so that those innocent children will come and join suffering in Nigeria?

Nigerians should at least have common electricity 24h/7.
Israel the country of Jesus is maintaining a strong nuclear weapon standing army, nuclear electricity, governments that does not joke with the lives of their citizens, best schools and hospitals, water and health care.
UK, France, Switzerland, Israel, Germany, Spain these countries answered their own prayers by themselves with actions.
Nigerians must answer their own prayers by themselves too and they will see a total change of things.

Prayer is good but praying without action is like getting married and refusing to have sex with the partner, then waiting for God to bring children.

Simply show this photo(s) to any 6 year old child near you.
After about 30 seconds, ask that child if the two people shown are the same person or not.
You will be amazed by the intelligence of that 6 year old compared to the millions of morons wandering aimlessly in the Nigeria .
A child will confidently tell you the two persons depicted are not the same but not your average adult citizen.
With this simple test you will come to the conclusion as most of have done, that the older people get in the Nigeria the more stid they are likely to become.
Can you see the difference or you need a 6 year old to explain it to you? Self deceit is a dreadful state of being. That is what the British created abomination has done to the brain of her inhabitants. Tell me why racism will ever stop?

Politics / Nnamdi Kanu Begged Interpol For Action by flyingsnail(f): 7:00am On Apr 28, 2020
I tweeted the Forensics Dept. of INTERPOL HQ to investigate the brutal murder and illegal burial of the victim that was interred in a shallow grave in Abuja in place of the late Abba Kyari. For reasons yet to be ascertained, this very tweet was hidden from public view for nearly 6 hours until I pinned it a few moments ago.

From all indications it seems the few surviving members of the diseased and dying regime in Aso Rock are afraid their crime will be uncovered and arranged with some people to conceal this truth from the public.

I am therefore directing all IPOB, Biafrans, conscientious men and women to go and retweet this message by clicking on the link below until the gravity of this crime by the Nigerian Government is acknowledged, investigated and the perpetrators made to face justice in a proper court of law outside Nigeria.

Buhari: Nnamdi Kanu should be arrested, taken to psychiatric home for psychological test – Arewa youths

Published 4 weeks ago on April 2, 2020By Seun Opejobi

The Arewa Youths Consultative Forum, AYCF, on Thursday declared that Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, should be arrested and made to undergo psychological tests.

AYCF President-General, Yerima Shettima made the call while condemning Kanu’s continued attacks and claims that President Muhammadu Buhari is fake.

Following Buhari’s broadcast ordering a lockdown to tackle the spread of Coronavirus, Kanu had claimed that the president used a body mask during the nationwide address.

The IPOB leader had on several occasions claimed that the Nigerian president was dead and replaced with one Jubril Al-Sudan.

However, Shettima in a chat with DAILY POST counselled the Nigerian government to apprehend Kanu using Interpol.

According to the AYCF President-General: “It’s been my position that Nnamdi Kanu should be checked psychologically, for us to be sure that he has no health problem. It’s necessary for the government of the day to arrest him.

“There is this Interpol arrangement that can be used to get him arrested wherever he is and brought back to the country where he should be made to undergo psychological tests.

“If he’s normal, then Kanu should be made to face the music at the Federal High Court but if he’s found to be psychologically abnormal, then he should be taken to a psychiatric home.

“The way he’s taking on the president and government using abusive words should not be encouraged. Mind you, if such character is allowed to go unpunished, our government both locally and internationally will be undermined by people who see him as a role model.

“Such madness must be checked, however, nobody is against anybody criticising the government but when you take on someone like the number one citizen of the country on a personal ground, then it gives us concern. Like him or not, Buhari remains the number one man.

“In as much as I don’t agree with so many things Buhari is doing, I can’t go out of my way to rain abuses and I think it’s high time we began to look at this issue and bring Kanu to order.”

Meanwhile, Kanu had lamented that Nigerians may die due to the lockdown.

Missing Nigerian separatist leader Nnamdi Kanu has resurfaced in Israel more than a year after soldiers stormed his home.

"I'm in Israel," Mr Kanu said on Sunday in a broadcast on his outlawed pirate radio station - Radio Biafra.

A video of the Indigenous People Of Biafra (Ipob) leader praying at the Western Wall in Jerusalem has also been shared online.

Mr Kanu holds both Nigerian and British nationality and says he is Jewish.

His wife, Uchechi Kanu, told the BBC in February that she believed the government knew where her husband was being held after his home was raided by soldiers.

Mr Kanu has been campaigning for an independent state called Biafra in south-eastern Nigeria.

In 2015, Mr Kanu was charged with "criminal conspiracy, intimidation and membership of an illegal organisation" - charges that could amount to treason.

He was released on bail last year after spending more than 19 months without trial on treason charges.

He then renewed his campaign for independence, before his house in the south-eastern Abia state was raided by the military.

Who is Nnamdi Kanu?
He was a relatively obscure figure until 2009 when he started Radio Biafra, a station that called for an independent state for the Igbo people and is broadcast to Nigeria from London.

Though he grew up in Nigeria's south-east and went to the University of Nsukka, Mr Kanu moved to the UK before graduating.

Soon after setting up Ipob in 2014, he spoke to gatherings of the large Igbo diaspora, calling for Biafran independence. In some of his comments, he urged Biafrans to take up arms against the Nigerian state.

"We need guns and we need bullets," he said in one such address. This comment is what brought him to the attention of Nigeria's security services.

Makinde meets Obasanjo, says AGF can’t nullify Amotekun

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State on Wednesday said the western Nigeria security network codenamed ‘Operation Amotekun’ was established to complement the work of the security agencies and bridge the gaps in the security of the geopolitical zone.

Makinde spoke against the backdrop of a statement credited to the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Mr. Abubakar Malami, in which he described the outfit as illegal.

The governor stated that the minister’s comment was misguided, adding that he was not empowered to make such a declaration.

Makinde, while speaking during a visit to former President Olusegun Obasanjo in Abeokuta, said the AGF’s position was not conveyed through any official correspondence, hence, should be taken with a pinch of salt.

The governor said the government cannot be operated on pages of newspapers or through social media.

According to him, Operation Amotekun has not, in any way, violated the Constitution, but was an intervention to narrow the gaps in security in the South-West.

He added that given the centrality of security to governance, the governors of the South-West designed the Operation to complement efforts of the Nigerian Police and other security agencies.

He added that the Operation was designed to help in combating insecurity in the nooks and crannies of the South-West states.

Makinde said, “You don’t run a government on social media. If I see a letter or receive a call from the Attorney-General of the Federation saying that Amotekun is illegal, it will be a different reaction. For now, I have been reading on social media just like you and I have not seen anything official to that effect...

BREAKING!!! Don’t Go To War With Biafrans Again; They Are Now Too Sophisticated To Be Defeated – Gowon Tells Buhari, Others

A former Military Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (rtd), said that an Igbo president would help heal the civil war wounds, maintaining that he supports the idea of rotational presidency IGBERE TV has learnt.

Gowon said this while delivering a lecture entitled “No Victor, No Vanquished: Healing the Nigerian Nation” to mark the 6th Convocation ceremony of the Chukwumeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Igbariam, in Anambra.

He explained that the civil war was not out of hatred for the late Igbo leader Odumegwu Ojukwu or the Igbos, but was based on the principle of a commitment to a robust Nigeria.

“It is wrong to conclude that the civil war broke out following the failure of the Aburi Accord but was the direct result of a unilateral decision of independence for Eastern Nigeria.

“If there was no seccession, there would have been no war.

“It was a reluctant war waged to unite the country,” Gowon explained.

He acknowledged that many people died of hunger and diseases during the period but maintained that the Federal Government ensured that starvation was not used as a weapon of war.

Gowon said that Nigerians should be proud of the gains of the war through the healing balm of “no victor, no vanquished.”

According to him, the three Rs of reconciliation, rehabilitation and reconstruction were adopted to enhance national unity.

He also argued that the abandonment of the development plan drafted immediately after the war by successive governments, resulted in the infrastructural decay in the country.

The former head of state, however, lauded Ojukwu for his courage in defending his people during the war, saying: “if Ojukwu were in my shoes, he would have equally waged the war.”

He also commended the Anambra government and management of the university for honouring Ojukwu with the change in name of the institution from Anambra State University to COOU.

Gov. Willie Obiano of Anambra, who lauded Gowon for honouring the invitation, said education was dear to his administration.

Represented by the state Commissioner for Education, Prof. Kate Omenugha, Obiano said that a blue print for the development of higher education would soon be implemented in the state...

Plan to make Osinbajo president will fail - Arewa youths tell Yoruba leaders

A coalition of Arewa Youths have accused Yoruba leaders of paving way for Acting President Yemi Osinbajo to become Nigeria's president. The coalition in a statement signed by its Muhammed Shehu and Tanko Abdullahi said the Yoruba leaders are out to discredit the North in order for Osinbajo to become the president. The duo said after the coalition's meeting in Daura, Kastina state, the group has come to the conclusion that it will resist every plan of the Yoruba leaders.

The coalition said it will ensure that the Northern region completes its eight-year tenure irrespective of whatever happens. “We shall resist every of such plans and ensure by all means possible, that the north completes its eight-year tenure and possibly even continue after then, and that the federal structure of Nigeria as it currently is, is not tampered with by secession mongers and their collaborators," the coalition said. The coalition which claims to speak for all the youth in the North said the Yoruba's have proved to be the 'most ungrateful stock in Nigeria'.

"Having given power to the Yoruba on a platter of gold in 1999 as a way of compensating them for the June 12 saga, it is quite worrisome and unfortunate that they have lived up to their legendary reputation of backstabbing and betrayal by supporting the divisive calls for restructuring or dismemberment of the nation against the will and desire of the north," the statement said. "We gave the late Chief MKO Abiola the mandate in 1993 but shortly after that, as it is with the Yoruba as a culture, they immediately started circling around Abiola plotting on how to emasculate the north and strip us of every access we had to the politics and economy of this nation. “They had also raised a secret army of their elites to carry out these sinister plans against the north if Abiola eventually became president. It was this army that was unleashed on the nation in the guise of NADECO during the June 12 impasse.

May we remind the Yoruba that without the willingness and magnanimity of the north, there was no way Abiola could have purportedly won that election, and that all the Yoruba have now as assets in the south west, especially Lagos, were given to them by our leaders out of our own usual magnanimity. However, time and time again, the Yoruba have always turned their back on us whenever their support is needed. They have chosen to pitch tent with the Igbo this time around just to spite us, but we shall not succumb to their antics," the coalition added.

NAIJ.com had reported that the leader of another Arewa group, the Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF) Shettima Yerima has promised to turn himself in once appropriate security agencies declares him wanted. Shettima reacting to reports that he had gone into hiding in Chad said: “I did not go into hiding and will never go into hiding. We need to put the record straight. For now, nobody is looking for me and I am ready to submit myself if I am called. I am not a joker. "Nobody is looking for me and I am not hiding anywhere from anybody. I am in my village, I am a Nigerian. If anybody looks for me, I will submit myself. I am not above the law. I am not on the run.”

"PRESIDENT GOODLUCK JONATHAN AND THE IGBO: THE UNKNOWN, THE UNSPOKEN, THE UNAPPRECIATED TRUTH -Tony Nnadi 28/06/17

At a time when many years of painstaking efforts to reestablish the damaged brotherly love and cohesion between the Igbo and the rest of the Niger Delta is beginning to yield very positive outcomes, it is heartrending to read in the media, (Daily Sun of Monday June 26, 2017 precisely), statements credited to our brother and compatriot, Nnamdi Kanu of dismissing Former President Goodluck Jonathan as a "weak and incompetent President who did nothing for the South East, even though even though the Region claimed him as one of their own", with an insulting suggestion that the Former President's Wife, Dame Patience Jonathan would have been a better President than her husband.

The reasons offered for this damning conclusion include the failure by the Jonathan's Administration to complete the East-West Road and the building of the Kaduna-Abuja Railway Line by the same Administration.

Still continuing, the verdict praised Former Presidents Shagari and Yar'Adua for doing better in the East.

While I wait to verify that these outlandish assertions regarding President Jonathan truly emanated from the source claimed by Sun Newspaper, I make bold to say that as one, from the Igbo flank, who was directly involved in the deep subsurface pushing and pulling that attended the Presidency of Goodluck Jonathan, made ungovernable by malevolent forces from the upper fringes of Northern Nigeria, the assertions published by aforementioned Sun Newspaper, far from the truth and are most unfortunate to have come from any Igbo man, if it indeed came from the source claimed. I have my doubts.

Therefore beyond the question of the source of the offensive Statement as published by Sun Newspaper, I will address the contents of the Statement.

The LNC takes a very strong exception to the denigration of the President as weak and incompetent, especially for the reasons offered with border on anti-Igbo sentiments.

If anything, President Jonathan leaned so heavily towards the Igbo that his traducers openly declared his Presidency an Igbo Presidency, for which reason the hatred aggression reserved by the aforementioned malevolent forces exclusively for the Igbo got transferred to President Jonathan, with venom.

The case those anti-Jonathan forces put forward to buttress their charges regarding over-accommodation of the Igbo include

(i) The creation of the Office of "Coordinating Minister for the Economy" (which was more like a Prime Ministerial position in a Parliamentary Democracy) to which he appointed Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala (who already held the Finance Minister Portfolio) practically delegating to her, his superintending Powers over the Economy.

(ii) The appointment of Pius Anyim to the weighty office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

(iii) The appointment of Lt-General Azubuike Ihejirika, the Chief of Army Staff, in what seemed to the Far North a sacrilege and an abomination.

(iv) The Grand State Burial Organized to send forth the "Biafra Warlord", Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, much feared, much loathed by the North but deeply loved and revered by the Igbo. (I led a 250-Man LNC Team that took part in the Burial Ceremonies for Ojukwu in Nnewi which the then President Jonathan personally Presided over and so I witnessed at close quarters the consternation it generated in the camp of the Igbophobics). This, according to President Jonathan's traducers, amounted to an official endorsement and resurrection of Biafra.

Mischievous as these Igbophobic charges are, the truth of the unprecedented accommodation of the Igbo in the place of Power in Nigeria under President Jonathan, since after the Biafra War in 1970 was self-evident and the psychological rehabilitation it wrought for the Igbo was clearly worth a lot more than what any physical infrastructural rehabilitation could have enacted.

The Igbo regained their group self-confidence which the same anti-Jonathan forces damaged strategically since 1970 and therefore Jonathan had to be punished severely for letting the genie out of the bottle.

In the course of my Tasks at the LNC, I had had very difficult face-to-face conversations relating to the jinxed Protocols of mutual coexistence in Nigeria with President Jonathan during his Presidency and my first hand assessment of him does not at all support a verdict of "weak and incompetent". If anything, President Jonathan proved a lot more brave and decisive than his generally meek mien presents from afar. He also has his ways and style that differ radically from the brash methods many Nigerians have become accustomed to under other Presidents.

He went to extraordinary lengths in trying to address the many institutionalized and other injustices against the Igbo and others including the watershed National Conference of 2014.
He never missed any opportunity to let the East have one more slot or Project if he was the one to decide. But there are three arms of Government and the Appropriation Power lay with the Legislative Arm where the East is hopelessly outnumbered.

He believed in the Lower Niger Paradigm and ideal which demolished the enemy-imposed walls of division between the Niger Delta and the Igbo, and so at times he incurs the wrath of his own Niger Delta People for refusing to draw the expected line with the Igbo. Some of them bitterly accused him of having been hijacked by the Igbo !!

Being human, he had his flaws of course but he is a lot more intelligent than many who never dealt closely with him would ever know but the powers and principalities that operate the criminal enterprise we call "Nigeria" decide many outcomes outside what any sitting President would have preferred.

I close by saying that the day the Peoples of the Eastern Half of Southern Nigeria will get to learn about the unknown, unspoken and therefore the unappreciated truth regarding the sojourn of the "Slaveboy" from Otuoke in the Abuja Throne-House of Uthman Dan Fodio, that day, torrents of tears and apologies will flow, but neither One-Nigeria nor its promoters will be there to moderate in that day.

Nigeria adopts unorthodox measures to defend the naira

The Muhammadu Buhari administration has reportedly resorted to cutting down trees in Abuja in a bid to save the Naira.

According to Financial Times, the Buhari-led FG is cutting down trees lining the streets of Abuja to ''thwart black market money changers, one of a range of unorthodox measures it is deploying to defend its weakening currency''.

The chopping down of the trees is part of the holistic plan to discourage black market operators of forex who carry out their businesses under the trees.

Some labourers hired by the Abuja city government cut the trees spoke to Financial Times. One said, ''The government does not want the trees because people are doing illegal work under them,” as he cut down branches from a tree with a chainsaw.

''The man was referring to money changers from the north of the country who rest under the shade of the trees and sell US dollars, British pounds, and even Saudi riyals to customers hungry for hard currency,” the report concluded.

Full Story

The Nigerian government has resorted to chopping down trees lining the streets of its capital to thwart black market money changers, one of a range of unorthodox measures it is deploying to defend its weakening currency.

On an August morning in Abuja, a labourer who said he was hired by the city government cut branches from a towering tree with a chainsaw. Nearby other workers hacked away at smaller trees with machetes.

Asked what they were doing, one, who did not want his name published, replied: “The government does not want the trees because people are doing illegal work under them”.

The man was referring to money changers from the north of the country who rest under the shade of the trees and sell US dollars, British pounds, and even Saudi riyals to customers hungry for hard currency.

Another worker who gave his name as Alex said: “People change dollars on the road here and it’s not supposed to be like that. People are supposed to go to the banks to do transactions”.

But a series of central bank decrees issued this summer has instead increasingly restricted how Nigerians can use their banks, seemingly encouraging black market activity. For example, money changers in Abuja say the new rule barring Nigerians from depositing hard currency into banks only boosts unofficial trade.

The naira, still reeling from an oil price of less than $50 a barrel and political uncertainty in the run-up to this year’s elections, has lost a fifth of its value in the past year and has been devalued twice. In import-dependent Nigeria, demand for dollars remains high yet the fall in the price of crude has cut the flow of currency as income from oil exports has dwindled.

The central bank’s new controls, combined with its contentious move in June to restrict imports of critical goods such as rice and rubber, has hit foreign investor confidence in the administration of new president Muhammadu Buhari, who remains without a cabinet more than two months since his inauguration.

On August 11 the central bank lowered the ATM withdrawal limit, cutting the maximum naira limit by more than half, to 60,000 naira ($301) a day. Those with “domiciliary accounts” which are denominated in foreign currency can now take out only $300 a day. Earlier this month, the central bank banned Nigerians from depositing US dollars into their domiciliary accounts, angering people who had children at school abroad and had to pay school fees in foreign currency.

“Anything to strengthen the naira is important, but personally I need to transfer money to my family abroad, that’s why I opened a domiciliary account,” said a man in a suit after withdrawing the maximum daily amount of naira from a cash machine in the wealthy district of Ikoyi in Lagos. He did not want his name to be published. “In Nigeria we need these accounts because many of us work in foreign currency.”

At another row of cash machines at a nearby bank, 36-year-old car importer Babatunde Gbanga said the “liquidity challenges” and the new restrictions were hurting his business because he relied on being able to send and receive foreign currency from abroad.

The naira was in a “crisis situation” partly because of high demand for dollars, said Kunle Ezun, treasury researcher for Ecobank in Lagos. “In trying to control the FX market, the central bank is starving the money market of liquidity.”

Bank governor Godwin Emefiele has defended his policies, arguing that the measures are intended to stop speculation, decrease illicit financial flows and defend the naira. Mr Emefiele told the Financial Times this month he thought the naira was still appropriately priced, despite the spread between official and black market rates, and said his policies would help prepare Nigeria for a possible interest rate rise by the US Federal Reserve later this year.

Still, many economists disagree. Given that oil prices will remain low, the central bank’s naira policy raises the risk of more controls and even import bans, all of which could undermine growth, said Yvonne Mhango, Africa economist at Renaissance Capital.
